Deuteronomy 27-28

27 Then Moses and the elders of Israel charged the people, saying,[a] “Keep all of the commandment that I am commanding you today.[b] 2 And then on the day that you cross the Jordan to the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you, then you shall set up for yourselves[c] large stones, and you shall paint[d] them with lime, 3 and you shall write on them all the words of this law at your crossing, so that you may come into the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Yahweh, the God of your ancestors,[e] promised[f] to you. 4 And when you cross the Jordan,[g] you shall set up these stones that I am commanding you about today[h] on Mount Ebal, and you shall paint[i] them with lime. 5 And you shall build an altar there for Yahweh your God, an altar of stone, but[j] you shall not use an iron tool to shape the stones.[k] 6 You must build the altar of your God with unhewn stones, and you shall sacrifice on it burnt offerings to Yahweh your God. 7 And you shall sacrifice fellowship offerings, and you shall eat them there, and you shall rejoice before[l] Yahweh your God. 8 You shall write on the stone all of the words of this law very clearly.”

9 Then Moses and the priests, the Levites, spoke to all Israel, saying,[m] “Be silent and hear, Israel, for this day you have become a people[n] for Yahweh your God. 10 And listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, and observe his commandments and his rules that I am commanding you today.”[o]

Blessings and Curses

11 And Moses charged the people on that day, saying,[p] 12 “These tribes shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people when you cross[q] the Jordan: Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Joseph and Benjamin. 13 And these shall stand on Mount Ebal for delivering the curse: Reuben, Gad and Asher and Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali. 14 And the Levites shall declare,[r] and they shall say to each man of Israel with a loud voice, 15 ‘Cursed be the man that makes a divine image or a cast image, which is a detestable thing for Yahweh, the work of the hand of a skilled craftsman, and then sets it in a hiding place.’[s] And all the people shall respond,[t] ‘Amen.’

16 ‘Cursed be the one who dishonors his father or his mother.’ And all of the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

17 ‘Cursed be the one who moves the boundary marker of his neighbor.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

18 ‘Cursed be the one who misleads a blind person on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

19 ‘Cursed be the one who deprives the alien, the orphan, and the widow of justice.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

20 ‘Cursed be the one who lies with the wife of his father, because he has dishonored his father’s bed.’[u] And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

21 ‘Cursed be the one who lies with any kind of animal.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

22 ‘Cursed be the one who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

23 ‘Cursed be the one who lies with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

24 ‘Cursed be the one who strikes down his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

25 ‘Cursed be the one who takes a bribe to murder an innocent person.’[v] And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

26 ‘Cursed be the one who does not keep[w] the words of this law, to observe them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’”

28 “And it will happen that if you indeed listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, to diligently observe[x] all his commandments that I am commanding you today,[y] then Yahweh your God will set you above all the nations of the earth. 2 And all of these blessings shall come upon you, and they shall have an effect on you[z] if you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God:

3 “You will be blessed in the city, and you will be blessed in the field.

4 “Blessed will be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your livestock, the calf of your cattle and the lambs of your flock.[aa]

5 “Blessed will be your basket and your kneading trough.

6 “Blessed will you be when you come in and blessed will you be when you go out.[ab]

7 “Yahweh will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you;[ac] on one road[ad] they shall come out against you, but on seven roads[ae] they shall flee before you.[af] 8 Yahweh will command concerning you[ag] the blessing to be in your barns and in all your endeavors;[ah] and he will bless you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you. 9 Yahweh will establish you for himself[ai] as a holy people as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of Yahweh your God and you walk in his ways. 10 And all of the peoples of the earth shall see that by the name of Yahweh you are called,[aj] and they shall fear you.[ak] 11 And Yahweh will make you successful and prosperous,[al] in the fruit of your womb and on the land that Yahweh swore to your ancestors[am] to give to you. 12 Yahweh shall open for you his rich[an] storehouse, even the heavens, to give the rain for[ao] your land in its time and to bless all of the work of your hand, and you will lend to many nations; you will not borrow from them. 13 And Yahweh shall make you[ap] as head and not the tail, and you shall be only at the top of the nations, and you shall not be at the bottom, if you listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you today[aq] and diligently observe them.[ar] 14 And you shall not turn aside from any of[as] the words that I am commanding you today[at] to the right or left by going after other gods to serve them.

15 “And then[au] if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God by diligently observing[av] all of his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you today,[aw] then all of these curses shall come upon you, and they shall overtake you:

16 “You shall[ax] be cursed in the city, and you shall be cursed in the field.

17 “Your basket shall be cursed and your kneading trough.

18 “The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock.

19 “You shall be cursed when you come in,[ay] and you shall be cursed when you go out.[az]

20 “Yahweh will send upon you[ba] the curse,[bb] the panic,[bc] and the threat[bd] in everything that you undertake,[be] until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly[bf] because of[bg] the evil of your deeds in that[bh] you have forsaken me. 21 Yahweh will cause the plague to cling to you until it consumes you[bi] from the land that you are going to,[bj] to take possession of it. 22 Yahweh will afflict you with the wasting diseases and with the fever and with the inflammation and with the scorching heat and with the sword[bk] and with the blight and with the mildew, and they shall pursue you until you perish.[bl] 23 And your heavens that are over your heads shall be like bronze, and the earth that is under you shall be like iron. 24 Yahweh will change the rain of your land to fine dust and to sand; from the heaven it shall come down upon you until you are destroyed.[bm]

25 “Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated before[bn] your enemies; on one road you shall go against[bo] them,[bp] but you will flee on seven roads before[bq] them,[br] and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth. 26 And your dead bodies shall be as food for all of the birds of the heaven and to the animals of the earth, and there shall not be anyone to frighten them away.[bs]

27 “Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with the skin rash that cannot be healed.[bt] 28 Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart. 29 And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed all the time,[bu] and there will not be anyone who will rescue you. [bv] 30 You shall become engaged to a woman, but another man shall sleep[bw] with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not live in it; a vineyard you shall plant, but you shall not enjoy it. 31 Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat it; your donkey shall be stolen right before you,[bx] and it shall not be returned to you; your sheep and your goats shall be given to your enemies, and there shall not be anyone who rescues you.[by] 32 Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and you will be looking on[bz] longingly[ca] for[cb] them all day, but you will be powerless to do anything.[cc] 33 A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed for the rest of your lives.[cd] 34 You shall become mad because of what your eyes shall see.[ce] 35 Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which you will not be able to be healed,[cf] from the sole of your foot and up to your crown. 36 Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors[cg] have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone. 37 And you will become a horror and a proverb and ridicule among all the peoples where Yahweh drives you there.

38 “You shall carry out much seed to the field, but you shall gather little produce, for the locust shall devour it. 39 You shall plant vineyards and you shall dress[ch] them, but you shall not drink wine and you shall not gather grapes, for the worm shall eat it.[ci] 40 There shall be olive trees for you in all of your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself, for your olives[cj] shall drop off. 41 You shall bear sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours,[ck] for they shall go into captivity. 42 The cricket shall take possession of all your trees and the fruit of your ground. 43 The alien that is in your midst shall ascend over you, higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, but you shall be the tail.

45 “And all of these curses shall come over you, and they shall pursue you, and they shall overtake you until you are destroyed,[cl] because you did not listen[cm] to the voice of Yahweh your God, by observing[cn] his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. 46 And they shall be among you as a sign and as a wonder and among your offspring forever.[co]

47 “Because[cp] of the fact that you did not serve Yahweh your God with joy and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything, 48 then you shall serve your enemies, whom Yahweh will send against you under conditions of famine, in thirst, in nakedness, and in a lack of everything; and he shall place[cq] a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you.[cr] 49 Yahweh will raise up against you a nation from far off, from the end of the earth, attacking as the eagle swoops down, a nation whose language you will not understand,[cs] 50 a grim-faced nation[ct] who does not show respect[cu] to the old and the young and does not show pity. 51 And it[cv] shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground until you are destroyed,[cw] and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, calves of your herds,[cx] and lambs of[cy] your flock until it has destroyed you.[cz] 52 And it shall besiege you in all your towns until your high and fortified walls fall,[da] which you are trusting in[db] throughout your land;[dc] and it shall besiege you in all of your towns in all of your land that Yahweh your God has given to you. 53 And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave to you, during the siege and during the distress[dd] your enemy inflicts upon you. 54 The most refined and the very sensitive[de] man among you shall be mean with his brother[df] and against his beloved wife[dg] and against the rest[dh] of his children that he has left over, 55 by refraining from giving[di] to even one of them any of the meat of his children that he eats, because there is not anything that is left over for him during the siege and distress[dj] that your enemy inflicts upon you. 56 The most refined and the most delicate woman among you, who shall[dk] not venture to put the sole of her foot on the ground from being so delicate and from such gentleness, shall be mean to her beloved husband[dl] and against her son and against her daughter, 57 and even concerning her afterbirth that goes out[dm] from between her feet and also concerning her children that she bears, because she eats them for lack of anything in secret during the siege and during the distress[dn] that your enemy inflicts upon her in your towns.[do]

58 “If you do not diligently observe[dp] all the words of this law written in this scroll by revering this glorious and awesome name, Yahweh your God, 59 then Yahweh shall overwhelm you with your plagues and the plagues of your offspring, severe plagues and lasting illnesses, grievous and enduring. 60 And he shall bring back upon you all the diseases of Egypt concerning which you were in dread[dq] because of them.[dr] 61 Also any illness and any plague[ds] that is not written in the scroll of this law, he shall bring them, Yahweh, upon you until you are destroyed. 62 And you shall remain only a few people[dt] in place of the fact you were formerly as the stars of heaven as far as number is concerned, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God. 63 And then[du] as Yahweh delighted over you to make you prosperous[dv] to make you numerous, so Yahweh shall delight over you to exterminate you[dw] and to destroy you, and so you shall be plucked from the land that you are going there to take possession of it. 64 And Yahweh shall scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth up to the other end of the earth, and there you shall serve other gods that you have not known nor[dx] your ancestors,[dy] gods of wood and stone. 65 And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes[dz] and a languishing of your inner self.[ea] 66 And your life shall hang in doubt before you,[eb] and you shall be startled[ec] night and day, and you shall not be confident of your life. 67 In the morning you shall say, ‘If only it was evening!’[ed] and in the evening you shall say ‘If only it was morning!’[ee] because of the dread of your heart that you shall feel, and because of the sight of your eyes that you shall see. 68 And Yahweh shall bring you back to Egypt in ships by the route that I promised[ef] to you that ‘You shall not see it again!’[eg] And you shall sell yourself there to your enemies as slaves and as female slaves, but there will not be a buyer.”

The Transfiguration

28 Now it happened that about eight days after these words, he took along Peter and John and James and[a] went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face became different, and his clothing became white, gleaming like lightning.[b] 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and[c] were speaking about his departure which he was about to fulfill[d] in Jerusalem.

32 Now Peter and those with him were very sleepy,[e] but when they[f] became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men who were standing with him. 33 And it happened that as they were going away from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. And let us make three shelters, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he was saying. 34 And while[g] he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud. 35 And a voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him!” 36 And after the voice had occurred, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

A Demon-possessed Boy Healed

37 Now it happened that on the next day, when[h] they had come down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look with concern on my son, because he is my only son! 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him and suddenly he screams, and it convulses him with foam and rarely withdraws from him, battering him severely. 40 And I begged your disciples that they would expel it, and they were not able to do so.” 41 So Jesus answered and[i] said, “O unbelieving and perverted generation! How long[j] will I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here!” 42 And while[k] he was still approaching, the demon threw him down and convulsed him.[l] But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all astounded at the impressiveness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Suffering

But while they[m] were all marveling at all the things that he was doing, he said to his disciples, 44 “You take these words to heart,[n] for the Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they could not understand it. And they were afraid to ask him about this statement.

Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us

49 And John answered and[p] said, “Master, we saw someone expelling demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him, because he does not follow in company with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not prevent him,[q] because whoever is not against you is for you.”

Jesus Rejected in a Samaritan Village

51 Now it happened that when the days were approaching for him to be taken up,[r] he set his[s] face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers before him,[t] and they went and[u] entered into a village of the Samaritans in order to prepare for him. 53 And they did not welcome him because he was determined to go[v] to Jerusalem. 54 Now when[w] the disciples James and John saw it,[x] they said, “Lord, do you want us to call fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But he turned around and[y] rebuked them, 56 and they proceeded to another village.

A Description of Those Who May Dwell with Yahweh

A psalm of David.[a]

15 O Yahweh, who may reside in your tent?
Who may dwell on your holy mountain?
2 He who walks blamelessly and does what is right.
He who speaks honestly in his heart.
3 He does not slander with his tongue.
He does not harm his friend,
nor bring up[b] a disgrace against his neighbor.
4 In his eyes a rejected one is contemptible,
but he honors those who respect Yahweh.
He takes an oath to his own injury and does not retract it.
5 He does not lend his money at interest,
and does not take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things
will never be shaken.

Confidence in Yahweh

A miktam[c] of David.[d]

16 Protect me, O God,
for I take refuge in you.
2 Oh my soul you have said[e] to Yahweh, “You are my Lord.
I have no good apart from you.”
3 With regard to the saints who are in the land,
they are the noble ones in whom is all my desire.
4 Those who hurry after[f] another god increase their sorrows.
I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood,
nor take up their names on my lips.
5 Yahweh is the portion which is my share and my cup.
You hold my lot.
6 The measuring lines have fallen for me in pleasant places.
Yes, my inheritance is delightful for me.
7 I will bless Yahweh who advises me;
yes, at night my innermost being[g] instructs me.
8 I have set Yahweh before me always.
Because he is at my right hand I will not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices.
Yes, my body will dwell in safety,
10 for you will not abandon my soul to Sheol;
you will not give your faithful one to see the grave.
11 You will make known to me the path of life.
In your presence is fullness of joy.
At your right hand are pleasures forever.

Prayer for Vindication and Protection

A prayer of David.[h]

17 O Yahweh, hear a just cause.
Hear my cry; heed my prayer
I make without deceitful lips.
2 Let my vindication come forth from you;
let your eyes see fairness.
3 You have tried my heart;
you have examined me by night;
you have tested me; you found nothing.
I have decided that my mouth will not transgress.
4 As for the works of humankind,
by the word of your lips,
I have kept from the ways of the violent.
5 I have held my steps in your path
My feet will not slip.
6 As for me, I have called on you
because you will answer me, O God.
Incline your ear to me.
Hear my words.[i]
7 Show wondrously your acts of loyal love,
O Savior of those who take refuge
at your right hand[j]
from those who rise up against them.
8 Keep me as the apple of your eye.[k]
Hide me in the shadow of your wings
9 from the presence[l] of the wicked who destroy me,
those enemies against my life,
they that surround me.
10 They have shut off their calloused[m] heart;
with their mouth they speak arrogantly.
11 Now they surround us at our every step.
They intend[n]
to pin[o] me to the ground.
12 He is like[p] a lion; he longs to tear apart,
and like a strong lion crouching in hiding places.
13 Rise up, O Yahweh, confront him.[q]
Make him bow down.
Rescue with your sword my life from the wicked,
14 from men by your hand, O Yahweh, from men of this world.
Their share is in this life,[r] and you fill their stomach with your treasure.
They are satisfied with children.
They bequeath their excess to their children.
15 By contrast, I in righteousness shall see your face.
Upon awakening I will be satisfied seeing your form.

Praise to God for His Deliverance

For the music director. Of David, the servant of Yahweh,

who spoke to Yahweh the words of this song

when[s] Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies,

and from the hand of Saul.[t]

18 And he said:
“I love you, O Yahweh, my strength.”
2 Yahweh is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock in whom I have taken refuge,
my shield and the horn of my deliverance, my stronghold.
3 I called upon Yahweh, who is worthy to be praised,
and I was saved from my enemies.
4 The ropes of death encircled me,
and streams of ruin overwhelmed me.
5 The ropes of Sheol surrounded me;
the snares of death confronted me.
6 In my trouble I called on Yahweh,
and to my God I cried for help.
He heard my voice from his temple,
and my cry for help
came up before his presence into his ears.
7 Then the earth shook and quaked,
and the foundations of the mountains trembled,
and they staggered because he was angry.
8 Smoke went forth from his nose,
and fire from his mouth consumed.
Burning coals blazed from him.
9 So he bowed the heavens and came down
with a thick cloud under his feet.
10 And he mounted a cherub and flew,
and he swooped down on wings of wind.
11 He made darkness his hiding place;
all about him his covering
was a darkness of waters, thick clouds.[u]
12 From the brightness before him
his clouds passed over
with hail and coals of fire.
13 And Yahweh thundered from the heavens,
and the Most High uttered his voice
with hail and coals of fire.
14 And he shot his arrows and scattered them,[v]
and many lightning bolts and routed them.
15 Then the channels of the sea became visible,
and the foundations of the world were uncovered
by your rebuke, O Yahweh,
by the blast[w] of the wind of your nose.
16 He reached[x] from on high; he seized me.
He drew me from many waters.
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy,
and from those who hated me
because they were stronger than I.
18 They confronted me on the day of disaster,
but Yahweh was my support.
19 So he brought me out to a spacious place.
He delivered me because he delighted in me.
20 Yahweh has rewarded me according to my righteousness;
According to the cleanness of my hands
he has repaid me.
21 Because I have kept the ways of Yahweh,
and have not acted wickedly against my God,
22 because all his ordinances are before me,
and his statutes I have not removed from me,
23 and I was blameless before him,
and I kept myself from my guilt.
24 Therefore Yahweh has repaid me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight.
25 To the loyal you show yourself loyal.
To the blameless you show yourself blameless.
26 To the pure you show yourself pure.
but to the wicked you show yourself shrewd.
27 For you deliver humble people,
but haughty eyes you humiliate.
28 For you light my lamp;
Yahweh, my God, lights up my darkness.
29 For with you I can charge a troop,
and with my God I can scale a wall.
30 This[y] God—his way is blameless.
The word of Yahweh is flawless.[z]
He is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
31 For who is God apart from Yahweh,
and who is a rock except our God?
32 The God who girded me with strength,
and made safe[aa] my way,
33 he made my feet like the deer’s,
and on my high places he makes me stand.
34 He trains my hands for war,
so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.
35 You also gave me the shield of your salvation,
and your right hand supported me,
and your humility made me great.
36 You enlarged my step under me,
and my ankles did not slip.
37 I chased my enemies and overtook them;
I did not turn back until they were finished off.
38 I struck them and they were not able to stand up;
they fell under my feet.
39 And you girded me with strength for the battle;
those rising against me you made to kneel under me.
40 And you made my enemies turn their backs,[ab]
then I destroyed those who hated me.
41 They cried out but there was no rescuer,
even to Yahweh, but he did not answer them.
42 And I ground them like dust in the wind,[ac]
I emptied them[ad] out like mud of the streets.
43 You rescued me from strife with people;
you set me as head (over) nations.
People I did not know served me;
44 as soon as they heard,[ae] they obeyed me.
The children of a foreign land feigned obedience before me.
45 The children of a foreign land lost heart,[af]
and they came trembling from their strongholds.
46 Yahweh lives, and blessed be my rock,
and may the God of my salvation be exalted—
47 the God who executed vengeance for me,
and subdued peoples under me,
48 who delivered me from my enemies.
Indeed, you exalted me higher than those who rose against me.
You delivered me from the man of violence.
49 Therefore I will give thanks to you among the nations, O Yahweh,
and I will sing the praise of your name:
50 the one who makes great victories for his king,
and who shows loyal love for his anointed,
to David and to his descendants forever.

Wisdom and Piety

3 My child, do not forget my instruction,
    and may your heart guard my commands.
2 For length of days, years of life,
    and peace they[a] shall add to you.
3 May loyal love[b] and truth not forsake you;
    bind them around your neck,
    write them upon your heart.
4 And you shall find favor and good sense[c]
    in the eyes of God and humankind.
5 Trust Yahweh[d] with all your heart;
    do not lean toward your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him,
    and he will straighten your paths.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
    fear Yahweh and retreat from evil.
8 There shall be healing for your flesh,[e]
    and refreshment for your body.
9 Honor Yahweh from your substance,[f]
    and from the firstfruits of all that will come to you,
10 and your barns shall be full of plenty,
    and your vats shall burst with new wine.

Happy Is the One Who Finds Wisdom

11 Do not despise the discipline of Yahweh, my child.
    Do not be weary of his reproof
12 because whomever Yahweh will love, he will rebuke,
    as a father delights in his son.
13 Happy is the one[g] who finds wisdom,
    and one who obtains understanding.
14 For her[h] income is better than the income of silver,
    and her revenue than that of gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies,
    and all your desires shall not compare with her.
16 Length of days is in her right hand;
    in her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
    and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life for those who seize her;
    those who take hold of her are considered happy.

Role of Wisdom in Creation and Society

19 Yahweh in wisdom founded the earth;
    he established the heavens in understanding.
20 With his knowledge, depths broke open,
    and clouds dropped dew.
21 My child, may they[i] not escape from your sight;[j]
    may you keep sound wisdom and prudence.
22 They shall be life for your soul[k]
    and adornment[l] for your neck.
23 Then you will walk in the confidence of your ways,
    and your foot will not stumble.
24 If you sit down, you will not panic,[m]
    and if you lie down, then your sleep shall be sweet.
25 Do not be afraid of sudden panic,[n]
    or the storm of wickedness that will come.
26 Yahweh will be your confidence[o]
    and guard your foot from capture.
27 Do not withhold good from its owner[p]
    when it is in the power of your hand to do.
28 Do not say to your neighbor,
    “Go and return and tomorrow I will give it,”
    when it is with you.[q]
29 Do not plot harm against your neighbor
    who dwells in confidence beside you.
30 Do not quarrel with anyone without cause,
    when he did not do you harm.
31 Do not envy a man of violence,
    and do not choose any of his ways,
32 for he who is perverse is an abomination of Yahweh,
    but those who are upright are his confidence.
33 The curse of Yahweh is on the house of the wicked,
    and the abode of the righteous ones he blesses.
34 With those who scorn, he is scornful,
    but to those who are humble, he gives favor.
35 They will inherit the honor of the wise,
    but stubborn fools, disgrace.
