The Lord is God

32 Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? 33 Has any other people heard the voice of God[a] speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived? 34 Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes?

35 You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God; besides him there is no other. 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice to discipline you. On earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from out of the fire. 37 Because he loved your ancestors and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his Presence and his great strength, 38 to drive out before you nations greater and stronger than you and to bring you into their land to give it to you for your inheritance, as it is today.

39 Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other. 40 Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.

Cities of refuge

41 Then Moses set aside three cities east of the Jordan, 42 to which anyone who had killed a person could flee if they had unintentionally killed a neighbour without malice aforethought. They could flee into one of these cities and save their life. 43 The cities were these: Bezer in the wilderness plateau, for the Reubenites; Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.

Introduction to the law

44 This is the law Moses set before the Israelites. 45 These are the stipulations, decrees and laws Moses gave them when they came out of Egypt 46 and were in the valley near Beth Peor east of the Jordan, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon and was defeated by Moses and the Israelites as they came out of Egypt. 47 They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan. 48 This land extended from Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge to Mount Sirion[b] (that is, Hermon), 49 and included all the Arabah east of the Jordan, as far as the Dead Sea,[c] below the slopes of Pisgah.

The Lord Alone Is God

32 “For (A)ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of. 33 (B)Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live? 34 Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, (C)by signs, by wonders, and (D)by war, (E)by a mighty hand and (F)an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 To you it was shown, (G)that you might know that the Lord is God; (H)there is no other besides him. 36 (I)Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and (J)you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. 37 And because (K)he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them[a] and brought you out of Egypt (L)with his own presence, by his great power, 38 (M)driving out before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, 39 know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that (N)the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; (O)there is no other. 40 (P)Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today, (Q)that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”

Cities of Refuge

41 Then Moses (R)set apart three cities in the east beyond the Jordan, 42 that (S)the manslayer might flee there, anyone who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without being at enmity with him in time past; he may flee to one of these cities and save his life: 43 (T)Bezer in the wilderness on the (U)tableland for the Reubenites, Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.

Introduction to the Law

44 This is the law that Moses set before the people of Israel. 45 These are the testimonies, the statutes, and the rules, which Moses spoke to the people of Israel when they came out of Egypt, 46 beyond the Jordan (V)in the valley opposite Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, (W)whom Moses and the people of Israel defeated when they came out of Egypt. 47 And they took possession of his land and the land (X)of Og, the king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who lived to the east beyond the Jordan; 48 (Y)from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, as far as Mount (Z)Sirion[b] (that is, (AA)Hermon), 49 together with all the Arabah on the east side of the Jordan as far as (AB)the Sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.

32 “Yes, ask, please, about former days that preceded you[a] from the day that God created humankind on the earth; ask even from one end of the heaven up to the other end of heaven whether anything ever happened[b] like this great thing or whether anything like it was ever heard.[c] 33 Has a people ever heard the voice of God speaking from the midst of the fire, just as you heard it, and lived? 34 Or has a god ever attempted to go to take for himself[d] a nation from the midst of a nation, using trials and signs and wonders and war, with an outstretched arm and with great and awesome deeds, like all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 You yourselves[e] were shown this wonder in order for you to acknowledge that Yahweh is the God;[f] there is no other God besides him.[g] 36 From heaven he made you hear his voice to teach you, and on the earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from the midst of the fire. 37 And because he loved your ancestors[h] he chose their descendants[i] after them. And he brought you forth from Egypt with his own presence,[j] by his great strength, 38 to drive out nations greater and more numerous than you from before you,[k] to bring you and to give to you their land as an inheritance, as it is this day. 39 So you shall acknowledge today,[l] and you must call to mind[m] that Yahweh is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. There is no other God. 40 And you shall keep his rules and his commandments that I am commanding you today,[n] so that it may go well[o] for you and for your children[p] after you, and so that you may remain a long time[q] on the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you during all of those days.”

41 Then Moses set apart three cities on the other side of the Jordan,[r] toward the east,[s] 42 in order for a manslayer[t] to flee there who has killed his neighbor without intent[u] and was not hating him previously,[v] and so he could flee to one of these cities and be safe.[w] 43 He set apart Bezer in the wilderness[x] in the land of the plateau of the Reubenites;[y] Ramoth in Gilead of the Gadites,[z] and Golan in Bashan of the Manassites.[aa]

44 Now this is the law[ab] that Moses set before[ac] the Israelites;[ad] 45 these are the legal provisions and the rules and the regulations that Moses spoke to the Israelites[ae] when they left Egypt,[af] 46 beyond the Jordan in the valley opposite Beth Peor in the land of Sihon the king of the Amorites,[ag] who was reigning in Heshbon and whom Moses and the Israelites[ah] defeated when they came out of Egypt.[ai] 47 And so they took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites[aj] who were beyond the Jordan, eastward,[ak] 48 from Aroer, which is on the bank of the wadi[al] of Arnon and as far as Mount Sirion; that is, Hermon, 49 and all of the Arabah[am] beyond the Jordan, eastward, and as far as the Sea of the Arabah[an] under the slopes of Pisgah.
