9 “Hear, O Israel: You are to cross over the Jordan today, and go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,

³¹ For you will cross over the Jordan and go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and you will possess it and dwell in it.

^38 (A)driving out from before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land as an inheritance, as it is this day.

²⁸ Where can we go up? Our brethren have ^[a]discouraged our hearts, saying, ^(A)“The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; moreover we have seen the sons of the ^(B)Anakim there.” ’

¹¹ “Pass through the camp and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, for ^(A)within three days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess.’ ”

²³ then the Lord will ^(A)drive out all these nations from before you, and you will ^(B)dispossess greater and mightier nations than yourselves.

7 “When the Lord your God brings you into the land which you go to ^(B)possess, and has cast out many ^(C)nations before you, ^(D)the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you,

¹⁸ “Then I commanded you at that time, saying: ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to possess. ^(A)All you men of valor shall cross over armed before your brethren, the children of Israel.

¹⁹ Now the people came up from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they camped ^(A)in Gilgal on the east border of Jericho.

⁵ and Joshua said to them: “Cross over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel,
