²⁵ You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire; you shall not ^(A)covet^[a] the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, lest you be snared by it; for it is an abomination to the Lord your God.

Various Instructions

17 “You ^(A)shall not sacrifice to the Lord your God a bull or sheep which has any ^[a]blemish or defect, for that is an ^[b]abomination to the Lord your God.

^20 (A)Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it.

¹² And when they left their gods there, David gave a commandment, and they were burned with fire.

²¹ When I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I ^[a]coveted them and took them. And there they are, hidden in the earth in the midst of my tent, with the silver under it.”

³ And ^(A)you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and burn their ^[a]wooden images with fire; you shall cut down the carved images of their gods and destroy their names from that place.

²⁴ Then Gideon said to them, “I would like to ^[a]make a request of you, that each of you would give me the earrings from his plunder.” For they had golden earrings, ^(A)because they were Ishmaelites.

²⁵ So they answered, “We will gladly give them.” And they spread out a garment, and each man threw into it the earrings from his plunder. ²⁶ Now the weight of the gold earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold, besides the crescent ornaments, pendants, and purple robes which were on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were around their camels’ necks. ²⁷ Then Gideon ^(B)made it into an ephod and set it up in his city, ^(C)Ophrah. And all Israel ^(D)played the harlot with it there. It became ^(E)a snare to Gideon and to his house.

Defeat at Ai

7 But the children of Israel ^[a]committed a ^(A)trespass regarding the ^(B)accursed^[b] things, for ^(C)Achan the son of Carmi, the son of ^[c]Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel.

¹⁸ You shall not bring the wages of a harlot or the price of a dog to the house of the Lord your God for any vowed offering, for both of these are ^[a]an abomination to the Lord your God.
