²⁰ In the future, when your son asks you,^(A) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?”

¹⁴ “In days to come, when your son^(A) asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.^(B)

²⁶ And when your children^(A) ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’

²¹ He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’^{(A) 22} tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’^{(B) 23} For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Red Sea^[a] when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over.^{(C) 24} He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know^(D) that the hand of the Lord is powerful^(E) and so that you might always fear the Lord your God.^(F)”

⁶ to serve as a sign^(A) among you. In the future, when your children^(B) ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’^{(C) 7} tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off^(D) before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial^(E) to the people of Israel forever.”

⁷ Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.^(A)
