¹⁶ “Do not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.^(A)

⁷ He called the place Massah^[a] and Meribah,^[b] because the Israelites quarreled and tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”^(A)

¹² Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”^(A)

⁷ Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”^(A)

⁹ We must not put Christ^[a] to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents.^(A)

² The people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”^(A)

⁴ From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea,^[a] to go around the land of Edom, but the people became discouraged on the way.^{(A) 5} The people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.”^(B)

³ The people quarreled with Moses and said, “Would that we had died when our kindred died before the Lord!^{(A) 4} Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness for us and our livestock to die here?^(B)
