^16 (A)“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, ^(B)as you tested him at Massah.

⁷ And he called the name of the place ^(A)Massah^[a] and ^(B)Meribah,^[b] because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

¹² And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ^(A)‘You shall not ^(B)put the Lord your God to the test.’”

⁷ Jesus said to him, “Again ^(A)it is written, ^(B)‘You shall not ^(C)put the Lord your God to the test.’”

⁹ We must not put Christ^[a] to the test, ^(A)as some of them did and ^(B)were destroyed by serpents,

^2 (A)Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you ^(B)test the Lord?”

The Bronze Serpent

⁴ From Mount Hor ^(A)they set out by the way to the Red Sea, ^(B)to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. ⁵ And the people ^(C)spoke against God and against Moses, ^(D)“Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and ^(E)we loathe this worthless food.”
