¹⁴ “You must not worship any of the gods of neighboring nations,

⁶ Do not provoke my anger by worshiping idols you made with your own hands. Then I will not harm you.’

²¹ Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.^[a]

⁷ They might suggest that you worship the gods of peoples who live nearby or who come from the ends of the earth.

¹⁹ “But I assure you of this: If you ever forget the Lord your God and follow other gods, worshiping and bowing down to them, you will certainly be destroyed.

²⁸ But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the Lord your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.

¹⁴ You must worship no other gods, for the Lord, whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.

¹⁵ “You must not make a treaty of any kind with the people living in the land. They lust after their gods, offering sacrifices to them. They will invite you to join them in their sacrificial meals, and you will go with them. ¹⁶ Then you will accept their daughters, who sacrifice to other gods, as wives for your sons. And they will seduce your sons to commit adultery against me by worshiping other gods.
