¹⁷ Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to ^(A)the heirs of promise ^(B)the ^[a]immutability of His counsel, ^[b]confirmed it by an oath, ¹⁸ that by two ^[c]immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to ^(C)lie, we ^[d]might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope ^(D)set before us.

²² But Abram ^(A)said to the king of Sodom, “I ^(B)have raised my hand to the Lord, God Most High, ^(C)the Possessor of heaven and earth,

⁵ The angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land ^(A)raised up his ^[a]hand to heaven ⁶ and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, ^(B)who created heaven and the things that are in it, the earth and the things that are in it, and the sea and the things that are in it, ^(C)that there should be delay no longer,

²⁸ Say to them, ^(A)‘As I live,’ says the Lord, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you: ²⁹ The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, ^(B)all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above. ^30 (C)Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I ^[a]swore I would make you dwell in.

⁸ And I will bring you into the land which I ^(A)swore^[a] to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the Lord.’ ”
