¹⁰ In a desert^(A) land he found him,
    in a barren and howling waste.^(B)
He shielded^(C) him and cared for him;
    he guarded him as the apple of his eye,^(D)

⁵ I cared for you in the wilderness,^(A)
    in the land of burning heat.

⁸ Keep me^(A) as the apple of your eye;^(B)
    hide me^(C) in the shadow of your wings^(D)

⁶ They did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord,
    who brought us up out of Egypt^(A)
and led us through the barren wilderness,
    through a land of deserts^(B) and ravines,^(C)
a land of drought and utter darkness,
    a land where no one travels^(D) and no one lives?’

⁷ You are my hiding place;^(A)
    you will protect me from trouble^(B)
    and surround me with songs of deliverance.^(C)

⁸ I will instruct^(D) you and teach you^(E) in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my loving eye on^(F) you.
⁹ Do not be like the horse or the mule,
    which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle^(G)
    or they will not come to you.
¹⁰ Many are the woes of the wicked,^(H)
    but the Lord’s unfailing love
    surrounds the one who trusts^(I) in him.
