²⁶ “But the Lord ^(A)was angry with me on your account, and would not listen to me. So the Lord said to me: ‘Enough of that! Speak no more to Me of this matter.

^37 (A)The Lord was also angry with me for your sakes, saying, ‘Even you shall not go in there.

² And he said to them: “I ^(A)am one hundred and twenty years old today. I can no longer ^(B)go out and come in. Also the Lord has said to me, ^(C)‘You shall not cross over this Jordan.’

^8 (A)Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.

³⁹ He went a little farther and fell on His face, and ^(A)prayed, saying, ^(B)“O My Father, if it is possible, ^(C)let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, ^(D)not as I will, but as You will.”

² Then King David rose to his feet and said, “Hear me, my brethren and my people: ^(A)I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and for ^(B)the footstool of our God, and had made preparations to build it. ³ But God said to me, ^(C)‘You shall not build a house for My name, because you have been a man of war and have shed ^(D)blood.’ ⁴ However the Lord God of Israel ^(E)chose me above all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever, for He has chosen ^(F)Judah to be the ruler. And of the house of Judah, ^(G)the house of my father, and ^(H)among the sons of my father, He was pleased with me to make me king over all Israel.

⁷ And David said to Solomon: “My son, as for me, ^(A)it was in my mind to build a house ^(B)to the name of the Lord my God; ⁸ but the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ^(C)‘You have shed much blood and have made great wars; you shall not build a house for My name, because you have shed much blood on the earth in My sight. ^9 (D)Behold, a son shall be born to you, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him ^(E)rest from all his enemies all around. His name shall be ^[a]Solomon, for I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days.
