⁹ The Lord will establish you as his holy people,^(A) as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands^(B) of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him.

⁵ Now if you obey me fully^(A) and keep my covenant,^(B) then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.^(C) Although the whole earth^(D) is mine, ⁶ you^[a] will be for me a kingdom of priests^(E) and a holy nation.’^(F) These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”

⁶ For you are a people holy^(A) to the Lord your God.^(B) The Lord your God has chosen^(C) you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.^(D)

¹⁸ And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession^(A) as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. ¹⁹ He has declared that he will set you in praise,^(B) fame and honor high above all the nations^(C) he has made and that you will be a people holy^(D) to the Lord your God, as he promised.

¹⁰ And the God of all grace, who called you^(A) to his eternal glory^(B) in Christ, after you have suffered a little while,^(C) will himself restore you and make you strong,^(D) firm and steadfast.

⁹ But you are a chosen people,^(A) a royal priesthood,^(B) a holy nation,^(C) God’s special possession,^(D) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.^{(E) 10} Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;^(F) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Living Godly Lives in a Pagan Society

¹¹ Dear friends,^(G) I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,^(H) to abstain from sinful desires,^(I) which wage war against your soul.^(J)

¹⁷ and none of the condemned things^[a] are to be found in your hands. Then the Lord will turn from his fierce anger,^(A) will show you mercy,^(B) and will have compassion^(C) on you. He will increase your numbers,^(D) as he promised^(E) on oath to your ancestors—

¹⁴ who gave himself for us^(A) to redeem us from all wickedness^(B) and to purify^(C) for himself a people that are his very own,^(D) eager to do what is good.^(E)
