¹⁷ Though the fig tree does not bud
    and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
    and the fields produce no food,^(A)
though there are no sheep in the pen
    and no cattle in the stalls,^(B)

²⁰ “Look, Lord, and consider:
    Whom have you ever treated like this?
Should women eat their offspring,^(A)
    the children they have cared for?^(B)
Should priest and prophet be killed^(C)
    in the sanctuary of the Lord?^(D)

⁹ May his children be fatherless
    and his wife a widow.^(A)
10 May his children be wandering beggars;^(B)
    may they be driven^[a] from their ruined homes.
¹¹ May a creditor^(C) seize all he has;
    may strangers plunder^(D) the fruits of his labor.^(E)
12 May no one extend kindness to him
    or take pity^(F) on his fatherless children.
¹³ May his descendants be cut off,^(G)
    their names blotted out^(H) from the next generation.
¹⁴ May the iniquity of his fathers^(I) be remembered before the Lord;
    may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
¹⁵ May their sins always remain before^(J) the Lord,
    that he may blot out their name^(K) from the earth.

¹⁶ His roots dry up below^(A)
    and his branches wither above.^(B)
17 The memory of him perishes from the earth;^(C)
    he has no name^(D) in the land.^(E)
18 He is driven from light into the realm of darkness^(F)
    and is banished^(G) from the world.^(H)
19 He has no offspring^(I) or descendants^(J) among his people,
    no survivor^(K) where once he lived.^(L)
