³ “‘Each of you must respect your mother and father,^(A) and you must observe my Sabbaths.^(B) I am the Lord your God.^(C)

¹⁷ “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.^(A)

A Rebellious Son

¹⁸ If someone has a stubborn and rebellious^(A) son^(B) who does not obey his father and mother^(C) and will not listen to them when they discipline him, ¹⁹ his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. ²⁰ They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” ²¹ Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death.^(D) You must purge the evil^(E) from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.^(F)

⁴ For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’^[a](A) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’^{[b](B) 5} But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ ⁶ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

⁷ In you they have treated father and mother with contempt;^(A) in you they have oppressed the foreigner^(B) and mistreated the fatherless and the widow.^(C)
