^4 (A)then her former husband who divorced her must not take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled; for that is ^[a]an abomination before the Lord, and you shall not bring sin on the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

Israel Is Shameless

¹⁷ Is the iniquity ^(A)of Peor not enough for us, from which we are not cleansed till this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the Lord, ¹⁸ but that you must turn away this day from following the Lord? And it shall be, if you rebel today against the Lord, that tomorrow ^(B)He will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.

^24 (A)‘Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; ^(B)for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you. ²⁵ For ^(C)the land is defiled; therefore I ^(D)visit^[a] the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land ^(E)vomits out its inhabitants. ^26 (F)You shall therefore ^[b]keep My statutes and My judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations, either any of your own nation or any stranger who dwells among you ²⁷ (for all these abominations the men of the land have done, who were before you, and thus the land is defiled), ²⁸ lest ^(G)the land vomit you out also when you defile it, as it vomited out the nations that were before you.
