⁷ “You shall not abhor an Edomite, ^(A)for he is your brother. You shall not abhor an Egyptian, because ^(B)you were an alien in his land.

¹⁹ Therefore love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

^21 (A)“You shall neither mistreat a ^[a]stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

^34 (A)The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as ^[a]one born among you, and ^(B)you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

⁹ “Also ^(A)you shall not oppress a ^[a]stranger, for you know the heart of a stranger, because you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

²⁴ So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. ²⁵ And the first came out red. He was ^(A)like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name ^[a]Esau. ²⁶ Afterward his brother came out, and ^(B)his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so ^(C)his name was called ^[b]Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

Passage Through Edom Refused

^14 (A)Now Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of ^(B)Edom. ^(C)“Thus says your brother Israel: ‘You know all the hardship that has befallen us,

¹⁰ and delivered him out of all his troubles, ^(A)and gave him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house. ^11 (B)Now a famine and great ^[a]trouble came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no sustenance. ^12 (C)But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first. ¹³ And the ^(D)second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to the Pharaoh. ^14 (E)Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and ^(F)all his relatives to him, ^[b]seventy-five people. ^15 (G)So Jacob went down to Egypt; ^(H)and he died, he and our fathers. ¹⁶ And ^(I)they were carried back to Shechem and laid in ^(J)the tomb that Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem.

¹⁷ “But when ^(K)the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, ^(L)the people grew and multiplied in Egypt ¹⁸ till another king ^(M)arose who did not know Joseph.
