Jesus’s Side Is Pierced

³¹ Since it was the day of Preparation, the Jews did not want the bodies left on the cross during the Sabbath, especially because that Sabbath was a day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucified men broken and the bodies removed.^{(A) 32} Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him.^{(B) 33} But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. ³⁴ Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.^{(C) 35} (He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows^[a] that he tells the truth, so that you also may continue^[b] to believe.)^{(D) 36} These things occurred so that the scripture might be fulfilled, “None of his bones shall be broken.”^{(E) 37} And again another passage of scripture says, “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.”^(F)

The Burial of Jesus

³⁸ After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though a secret one because of his fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed his body.

²⁹ I found that he was accused concerning questions of their law but was charged with nothing deserving death or imprisonment.^(A)

⁶⁶ What do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death.”^(A)

²⁶ You shall do nothing to the young woman; the young woman has not committed an offense punishable by death, because this case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor.

³¹ and as they were leaving they said to one another, “This man is doing nothing to deserve death or imprisonment.”^(A)

³³ When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus^[a] there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.

⁶⁴ You have heard his blasphemy! What is your decision?” All of them condemned him as deserving death.^(A)

²⁶ Afterward Joshua struck them down and put them to death, and he hung them on five trees. And they hung on the trees until evening.^(A)

²⁹ And he hanged the king of Ai on a tree until evening, and at sunset Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, threw it down at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised over it a great heap of stones, which stands there to this day.^(A)
