³⁴ And we captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction^[a] every ^(A)city, men, women, and children. We left no survivors.

³ Now go and strike Amalek and ^(A)devote to destruction^[a] all that they have. Do not spare them, ^(B)but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

^2 (A)and when the Lord your God gives them over to you, and you defeat them, then you must ^(B)devote them to complete destruction.^{[a] (C)}You shall make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them.

⁶ And ^(A)we devoted them to destruction,^[a] as we did to Sihon the king of Heshbon, devoting to destruction every ^(B)city, men, women, and children.

⁸ And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive ^(A)and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword. ^9 (B)But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves^[a] and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.

¹⁴ And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the people of Israel took for their plunder. But every person they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they did not leave any who breathed.

²⁵ And all who fell that day, both men and women, were 12,000, all the people of Ai. ²⁶ But Joshua did not draw back his hand with which he ^(A)stretched out the javelin until he had devoted all the inhabitants of Ai to destruction.^[a]

¹¹ Israel has sinned; they have ^(A)transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the ^(B)devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings.

¹⁶ But ^(A)in the cities of these peoples that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes, ¹⁷ but ^(B)you shall devote them to complete destruction,^[a] the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites, as the Lord your God has commanded, ¹⁸ that ^(C)they may not teach you to do according to all their abominable practices that they have done for their gods, and so you ^(D)sin against the Lord your God.
