²⁹ as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us—until we cross the Jordan into the land the Lord our God is giving us.”

³ No Ammonite^(A) or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord, not even in the tenth generation.^{(B) 4} For they did not come to meet you with bread and water^(C) on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam^(D) son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim^[a](E) to pronounce a curse on you.^(F)

¹⁸ But Edom^(A) answered:

¹¹ “Go through the camp^(A) and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions^(B) ready. Three days^(C) from now you will cross the Jordan^(D) here to go in and take possession^(E) of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”

¹² But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,^(F) Joshua said, ¹³ “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest^(G) by giving you this land.’ ¹⁴ Your wives,^(H) your children and your livestock may stay in the land^(I) that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle,^(J) must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites.^(K) You are to help them ¹⁵ until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”^(L)

¹⁵ You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long^(A) in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

⁶ Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.^(A)

⁴⁰ Keep^(A) his decrees and commands,^(B) which I am giving you today, so that it may go well^(C) with you and your children after you and that you may live long^(D) in the land the Lord your God gives you for all time.
