¹⁴ And the time from our leaving ^(A)Kadesh-barnea until we crossed ^(B)the brook Zered was thirty-eight years, ^(C)until the entire generation, that is, the men of war, had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.

^64 (A)But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For the Lord had said of them, ^(B)“They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, ^(C)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

²⁸ Say to them, ^(A)‘As I live, declares the Lord, ^(B)what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: ^29 (C)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and ^(D)of all your number, listed in the census ^(E)from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, ³⁰ not one shall come into the land where I ^(F)swore that I would make you dwell, ^(G)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. ^31 (H)But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that ^(I)you have rejected. ³² But as for you, ^(J)your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. ³³ And your children ^(K)shall be shepherds in the wilderness ^(L)forty years and shall ^(M)suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. ^34 (N)According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, ^(O)forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ ^35 (P)I, the Lord, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all ^(Q)this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.”

¹⁵ Moreover, ^(A)I swore to them in the wilderness ^(B)that I would not bring them into the land that I had given them, a land ^(C)flowing with milk and honey, ^(D)the most glorious of all lands,

The Penalty for Israel's Rebellion

³⁴ “And the Lord heard your words and was angered, and he swore, ^35 (A)‘Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers,

¹² Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from ^(C)the living God. ¹³ But ^(D)exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by ^(E)the deceitfulness of sin. ¹⁴ For we have come to share in Christ, ^(F)if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. ¹⁵ As it is said,

¹⁶ For ^(H)who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not ^(I)all those who left Egypt led by Moses? ¹⁷ And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, ^(J)whose bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did he swear that ^(K)they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ So we see that ^(L)they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

Israel's Refusal to Enter the Land

¹⁹ “Then we set out from Horeb and ^(A)went through all that great and terrifying wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us. And ^(B)we came to Kadesh-barnea.
