^13 (A)Your eye shall not pity him, ^(B)but you shall ^[a]put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you.

³¹ Then the king said to him, ^(A)“Do as he has said, and strike him down and bury him, ^(B)that you may take away from me and from the house of my father the innocent blood which Joab shed.

⁹ So ^(A)you shall put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you when you do what is right in the sight of the Lord.

¹⁶ Also you shall ^[a]destroy all the peoples whom the Lord your God delivers over to you; your eye shall have no pity on them; nor shall you serve their gods, for that will ^(A)be a snare to you.

² and when the Lord your God delivers ^(A)them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. ^(B)You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them.

David Avenges the Gibeonites

21 Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David ^(A)inquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered, “It is because of Saul and his ^[a]bloodthirsty house, because he killed the Gibeonites.”

³³ So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood ^(A)defiles the land, and no ^[a]atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except ^(B)by the blood of him who shed it. ³⁴ Therefore ^(C)do not defile the land which you inhabit, in the midst of which I dwell; for ^(D)I the Lord dwell among the children of Israel.’ ”

⁵ No eye pitied you, to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you; but you were thrown out into the open field, when you yourself were ^[a]loathed on the day you were born.

¹⁴ They buried the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in ^(A)Zelah, in the tomb of Kish his father. So they performed all that the king commanded. And after that ^(B)God heeded the prayer for the land.
