¹⁵ you may indeed set a king over you ^(A)whom the Lord your God will choose. One ^(B)from among your brothers you shall set as king over you. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.

^10 (A)He shall build a house for my name. ^(B)He shall be my son, and I will be his father, and I will establish his royal throne in Israel forever.’

²³ These are the numbers of the divisions of the armed troops ^(A)who came to David in Hebron ^(B)to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, ^(C)according to the word of the Lord.

¹² And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ^(A)ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, ^(B)“Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” ¹³ Then Samuel took ^(C)the horn of oil ^(D)and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. ^(E)And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

²⁴ And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him ^(A)whom the Lord has chosen? There is none like him among all the people.” And all the people shouted, ^(B)“Long live the king!”

¹⁵ Now the day before Saul came, ^(A)the Lord had ^(B)revealed to Samuel: ¹⁶ “Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, ^(C)and you shall anoint him to be prince^[a] over my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. ^(D)For I have seen^[b] my people, because their cry has come to me.” ¹⁷ When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, ^(E)“Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! He it is who shall restrain my people.”

¹⁷ Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay ^(A)taxes to ^(B)Caesar, or not?”
