¹⁵ be sure to appoint^(A) over you a king the Lord your God chooses. He must be from among your fellow Israelites.^(B) Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not an Israelite.

¹⁰ He is the one who will build a house for my Name.^(A) He will be my son,^(B) and I will be his father. And I will establish^(C) the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever.’^(D)

Others Join David at Hebron

²³ These are the numbers of the men armed for battle who came to David at Hebron^(A) to turn^(B) Saul’s kingdom over to him, as the Lord had said:^(C)

¹² So he^(A) sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome^(B) features.

Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

¹³ So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed^(C) him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord^(D) came powerfully upon David.^(E) Samuel then went to Ramah.

²⁴ Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see the man the Lord has chosen?^(A) There is no one like^(B) him among all the people.”

Then the people shouted, “Long live^(C) the king!”

¹⁵ Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel: ¹⁶ “About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint^(A) him ruler^(B) over my people Israel; he will deliver^(C) them from the hand of the Philistines.^(D) I have looked on my people, for their cry^(E) has reached me.”

¹⁷ When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord said to him, “This^(F) is the man I spoke to you about; he will govern my people.”
