²² When your ancestors went down into Egypt, there were only seventy of them. But now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky!

²⁷ In addition, Joseph had two sons^[a] who were born in Egypt. So altogether, there were seventy^[b] members of Jacob’s family in the land of Egypt.

⁵ Then the Lord took Abram outside and said to him, “Look up into the sky and count the stars if you can. That’s how many descendants you will have!”

⁵ In all, Jacob had seventy^[a] descendants in Egypt, including Joseph, who was already there.

¹⁰ The Lord your God has increased your population, making you as numerous as the stars!

¹⁴ Then Joseph sent for his father, Jacob, and all his relatives to come to Egypt, seventy-five persons in all.

⁶² Though you become as numerous as the stars in the sky, few of you will be left because you would not listen to the Lord your God.

Results of the Registration

⁵¹ In summary, the registered troops of all Israel numbered 601,730.

¹² And so a whole nation came from this one man who was as good as dead—a nation with so many people that, like the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore, there is no way to count them.
