¹⁵ The Lord delighted only in your fathers, to love them; and He chose their ^[a]descendants after them, you above all peoples, as it is this day.

³⁷ And because ^(A)He loved your fathers, therefore He chose their ^[a]descendants after them; and ^(B)He brought you out of Egypt with His Presence, with His mighty power,

¹³ As it is written, ^(A)“Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”

Israel’s Rejection and God’s Justice

¹⁴ What shall we say then? ^(B)Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! ¹⁵ For He says to Moses, ^(C)“I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” ¹⁶ So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy. ¹⁷ For ^(D)the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, ^(E)“For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.” ¹⁸ Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He ^(F)hardens.

¹⁹ You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For ^(G)who has resisted His will?” ²⁰ But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? ^(H)Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” ²¹ Does not the ^(I)potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make ^(J)one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?

²² What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering ^(K)the vessels of wrath ^(L)prepared for destruction, ²³ and that He might make known ^(M)the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had ^(N)prepared beforehand for glory,

⁷ The Lord did not set His ^(A)love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were ^(B)the least of all peoples; ⁸ but ^(C)because the Lord loves you, and because He would keep ^(D)the oath which He swore to your fathers, ^(E)the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of ^[a]bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

⁸ If the Lord ^(A)delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, ^(B)‘a land which flows with milk and honey.’
