²⁸ Where are we going up? ^(A)Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, ^(B)“The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to heaven. And besides, we have seen ^(C)the sons of the Anakim there.”’

Not Because of Righteousness

9 “Hear, O Israel: you are ^(A)to cross over the Jordan today, to go in to dispossess nations ^(B)greater and mightier than you, cities great and fortified up to heaven, ² a people great and tall, ^(C)the sons of the Anakim, ^(D)whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’

^28 (A)However, the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. And besides, we saw the descendants of Anak there. ^29 (B)The Amalekites dwell in the land of the Negeb. The Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the hill country. ^(C)And the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and along the Jordan.”

³⁰ But ^(D)Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” ^31 (E)Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” ³² So ^(F)they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and ^(G)all the people that we saw in it are of great height. ³³ And there we saw the ^(H)Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the ^(I)Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves ^(J)like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”

¹⁶ And Ishbi-benob, one of the descendants ^(A)of the giants, whose spear weighed three hundred shekels^[a] of bronze, and who was armed with a new sword, thought to kill David. ¹⁷ But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid and attacked the Philistine and killed him. Then David's men swore to him, ^(B)“You shall no longer go out with us to battle, lest you quench ^(C)the lamp of Israel.”

^18 (D)After this there was again war with the Philistines at Gob. Then ^(E)Sibbecai ^(F)the Hushathite struck down Saph, who was one of the descendants ^(G)of the giants. ¹⁹ And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and ^(H)Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, the Bethlehemite, struck down Goliath the Gittite, ^(I)the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.^{[b] 20} And there was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number, and he also was descended ^(J)from the giants. ²¹ And when ^(K)he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David's brother, struck him down. ²² These four were descended ^(L)from the giants in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

^20 (A)And Hebron was given to Caleb, as Moses had said. And he drove out from it ^(B)the three sons of Anak.

¹⁴ And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak, ^(A)Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, the descendants of Anak.

⁸ But ^(A)my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholly followed the Lord my God.

²² There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, ^(A)in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain.

^7 (A)And when they say to you, ‘Why do you groan?’ you shall say, ‘Because of the news ^(B)that it is coming. ^(C)Every heart will melt, and ^(D)all hands will be feeble; every spirit will faint, and ^(E)all knees will be weak as water. ^(F)Behold, it is ^(G)coming, and it will be fulfilled,’” declares the Lord God.
