Deuteronomy 1:19-40

Moses Reminds Israel of the Events at Kadesh Barnea
19 So we left Mount Horeb, as Yahweh our Elohim had commanded. We traveled through all that vast and dangerous desert you saw on the way to the mountain region of the Amorites. At last we came to Kadesh Barnea. 20 Then I said to you, “We have come to the mountain region of the Amorites, which Yahweh our Elohim is giving us. 21 Yahweh your Elohim is giving you this land. Go ahead! Take possession of it, as Yahweh Elohim of your ancestors told you. Don’t be afraid or terrified.”
22 All of you came to me and said, “Let’s send men ahead of us to gather information about the land for us. Have them report to us about the route we should take and the cities we’ll come to.”
23 It seemed like a good idea to me. So I chose 12 of your men, one from each tribe. 24 They left and went into the mountains. When they came to the Eshcol Valley, they explored it. 25 They took some of the region’s fruit with them and brought it back to us. They reported, “The land that Yahweh our Elohim is giving us is good.”
26 But you rebelled against the command of Yahweh your Elohim and refused to go. 27 You complained in your tents and said, “Yahweh hates us! That’s why he brought us out of Egypt. He wanted to hand us over to the Amorites so that they could destroy us! 28 Where are we going anyway? Our own men have discouraged us by saying, ‘The people there are taller and stronger than we are. The cities are big with sky-high walls! We even saw the people of Anak there.’”
29 Then I said to you, “Don’t tremble. Don’t be afraid of them. 30 Yahweh your Elohim, who is going ahead of you, will fight for you as you saw him fight for you in Egypt 31 and in the desert.” There you saw how Yahweh your Elohim carried you, as parents carry their children. He carried you wherever you went until you came to this place.
32 In spite of this, you didn’t trust Yahweh your Elohim, 33 who went ahead of you to find places for you to camp. He appeared in a column of fire at night and in a column of smoke during the day to show you which route to take.
34 When Yahweh heard what you said, he was angry and took this oath: 35 “Not one of these evil people will ever see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors, 36 except Caleb, son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give the land that he set his feet on to him and his descendants, because he wholeheartedly followed Yahweh.”
37 Yahweh became angry with me because of you. He said, “You won’t go there either. 38 But your assistant Joshua, son of Nun, will go there. Encourage him, because he will help Israel take possession of the land. 39 Although you thought the little children would be captured in war, your children, who are still too young to know the difference between good and evil, will enter that land. I will give it to them, and they will take possession of it. 40 Turn around, go back into the desert, and follow the road that goes to the Red Sea.”

Spies Sent Out
19 Then, as the Lord our God commanded us, we set out from Horeb and went toward the hill country of the Amorites(A) through all that vast and dreadful wilderness(B) that you have seen, and so we reached Kadesh Barnea.(C) 20 Then I said to you, “You have reached the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. 21 See, the Lord your God has given you the land. Go up and take possession(D) of it as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, told you. Do not be afraid;(E) do not be discouraged.”(F)
22 Then all of you came to me and said, “Let us send men ahead to spy(G) out the land(H) for us and bring back a report about the route we are to take and the towns we will come to.”
23 The idea seemed good to me; so I selected(I) twelve of you, one man from each tribe. 24 They left and went up into the hill country, and came to the Valley of Eshkol(J) and explored it. 25 Taking with them some of the fruit of the land, they brought it down to us and reported,(K) “It is a good land(L) that the Lord our God is giving us.”(M)
Rebellion Against the Lord
26 But you were unwilling to go up;(N) you rebelled(O) against the command of the Lord your God. 27 You grumbled(P) in your tents and said, “The Lord hates us; so he brought us out of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us. 28 Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts melt in fear. They say, ‘The people are stronger and taller(Q) than we are; the cities are large, with walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites(R) there.’”
29 Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid(S) of them.(T) 30 The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight(U) for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, 31 and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried(V) you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.”(W)
32 In spite of this,(X) you did not trust(Y) in the Lord your God, 33 who went ahead of you on your journey, in fire by night and in a cloud by day,(Z) to search(AA) out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go.
34 When the Lord heard(AB) what you said, he was angry(AC) and solemnly swore:(AD) 35 “No one from this evil generation shall see the good land(AE) I swore to give your ancestors, 36 except Caleb(AF) son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land he set his feet on, because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly.(AG)”
37 Because of you the Lord became angry(AH) with me also and said, “You shall not enter(AI) it, either. 38 But your assistant, Joshua(AJ) son of Nun, will enter it. Encourage(AK) him, because he will lead(AL) Israel to inherit(AM) it. 39 And the little ones that you said would be taken captive,(AN) your children who do not yet know(AO) good from bad—they will enter the land. I will give it to them and they will take possession of it. 40 But as for you, turn around and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.[a](AP)”

King James Version
19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded us; and we came to Kadeshbarnea.
20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the Lord our God doth give unto us.
21 Behold, the Lord thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged.
22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.
23 And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe:
24 And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.
25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the Lord our God doth give us.
26 Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord your God:
27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the Lord hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.
28 Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
29 Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them.
30 The Lord your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;
31 And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the Lord thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place.
32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe the Lord your God,
33 Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.
34 And the Lord heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying,
35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers.
36 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the Lord.
37 Also the Lord was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.
38 But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
39 Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

Israel’s Refusal to Enter the Land(A)
19 “So we departed from Horeb, (B)and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the mountains of the Amorites, as the Lord our God had commanded us. Then (C)we came to Kadesh Barnea. 20 And I said to you, ‘You have come to the mountains of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. 21 Look, the Lord your God has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as the Lord God of your fathers has spoken to you; (D)do not fear or be discouraged.’
22 “And every one of you came near to me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, and let them search out the land for us, and bring back word to us of the way by which we should go up, and of the cities into which we shall come.’
23 “The plan pleased me well; so (E)I took twelve of your men, one man from each tribe. 24 (F)And they departed and went up into the mountains, and came to the Valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. 25 They also took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us; and they brought back word to us, saying, ‘It is a (G)good land which the Lord our God is giving us.’
26 (H)“Nevertheless you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; 27 and you (I)complained in your tents, and said, ‘Because the Lord (J)hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28 Where can we go up? Our brethren have [a]discouraged our hearts, saying, (K)“The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; moreover we have seen the sons of the (L)Anakim there.” ’
29 “Then I said to you, ‘Do not be terrified, (M)or afraid of them. 30 (N)The Lord your God, who goes before you, He will fight for you, according to all He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a (O)man carries his son, in all the way that you went until you came to this place.’ 32 Yet, for all that, (P)you did not believe the Lord your God, 33 (Q)who went in the way before you (R)to search out a place for you to pitch your tents, to show you the way you should go, in the fire by night and in the cloud by day.
The Penalty for Israel’s Rebellion(S)
34 “And the Lord heard the sound of your words, and was angry, (T)and took an oath, saying, 35 (U)‘Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see that good land of which I [b]swore to give to your fathers, 36 (V)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him and his children I am giving the land on which he walked, because (W)he [c]wholly followed the Lord.’ 37 (X)The Lord was also angry with me for your sakes, saying, ‘Even you shall not go in there. 38 (Y)Joshua the son of Nun, (Z)who stands before you, he shall go in there. (AA)Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.
39 (AB)‘Moreover your little ones and your children, who (AC)you say will be victims, who today (AD)have no knowledge of good and evil, they shall go in there; to them I will give it, and they shall possess it. 40 (AE)But as for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.’
