^51 (A)because you broke faith with me in the midst of the people of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, and because you did not treat me as holy in the midst of the people of Israel.

^14 (A)because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled, failing ^(B)to uphold me as holy at the waters before their eyes.” (These are ^(C)the waters of Meribah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.)

¹¹ And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, ^(A)and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. ¹² And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because ^(B)you did not believe in me, ^(C)to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” ^13 (D)These are the waters of Meribah,^[a] where the people of Israel quarreled with the Lord, and through them he showed himself holy.

Edom Refuses Passage

^14 (E)Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to ^(F)the king of Edom: “Thus says ^(G)your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that we have met:

²¹ And he cried to the man of God who came from Judah, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord and have not kept the command that the Lord your God commanded you, ²² but have come back and have eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to you, “Eat no bread and drink no water,” your body shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’” ²³ And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. ²⁴ And as he went away ^(A)a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body. ²⁵ And behold, men passed by and saw the body thrown in the road and the lion standing by the body. And they came and told it in the city where ^(B)the old prophet lived.

²⁶ And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord; therefore the Lord has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the Lord spoke to him.”

Moses Forbidden to Enter the Land

²³ “And I pleaded with the Lord at that time, saying, ²⁴ ‘O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant ^(A)your greatness and your mighty hand. For ^(B)what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? ²⁵ Please let me go over and see ^(C)the good land beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and ^(D)Lebanon.’ ²⁶ But ^(E)the Lord was angry with me because of you and would not listen to me. And the Lord said to me, ^(F)‘Enough from you; do not speak to me of this matter again. ^27 (G)Go up to the top of Pisgah and lift up your eyes westward and northward and southward and eastward, and look at it with your eyes, for you shall not go over this Jordan.
