Various Laws

25 (A)If there is a dispute between people and they go to [a]court, and [b]the judges decide their case, (B)and they declare the righteous innocent and pronounce the wicked guilty, then it shall be if the wicked person [c](C)deserves to be beaten, the judge shall then make him lie down and have him beaten in his presence with the number of lashes according to his [d]wrongful act. (D)He may have him beaten forty times, but not more, so that he does not have him beaten with many more lashes than these, and that your brother does not (E)become contemptible in your eyes.

(F)You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing.

“When brothers live together, and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. (G)Her husband’s brother shall have relations with her and take her to himself as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her. It shall then be that the firstborn to whom she gives birth shall [e]assume the name of his father’s deceased brother, so that (H)his name will not be wiped out from Israel. (I)But if the man does not desire to take his brother’s widow, then his brother’s widow shall go up to the gate to the elders, and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to establish a name for his brother in Israel; he is not willing to perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak to him. And if he persists and says, ‘I do not desire to take her,’ (J)then his brother’s widow shall come up to him in the sight of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot and (K)spit in his face; and she shall [f]declare, ‘This is what is done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house!’ 10 And in Israel [g]his family shall be called by the name, ‘The house of him whose sandal was removed.’

11 “If two men, a man and his countryman, have a fight [h]with each other, and the wife of one comes up to save her husband from the hand of the one who is hitting him, and she reaches out with her hand and grasps [i]that man’s genitals, 12 then you shall cut off her [j]hand; [k](L)you shall not show pity.

13 (M)You shall not have in your bag [l]differing weights, a large and a small. 14 You shall not have in your house [m]differing measures, a large and a small. 15 You shall have a correct and honest [n]weight; you shall have a correct and honest [o]measure, (N)so that your days may be prolonged [p]in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For (O)everyone who does these things, everyone who acts unjustly is an abomination to the Lord your God.

17 (P)Remember what Amalek did to you on the way when you came out of Egypt, 18 how he confronted you on the way and attacked among you all the stragglers at your rear when you were tired and weary; and he (Q)did not [q]fear God. 19 So it shall come about, when the Lord your God has given you (R)rest from all your surrounding enemies in the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to [r]possess, that you shall wipe out the mention of the name Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget.

Offering First Fruits

26 “Then it shall be, when you enter the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you take possession of it and live in it, that you shall take some of (S)the first of all the produce of the ground which you bring in from your land that the Lord your God gives you, and you shall put it in a basket and (T)go to the place where the Lord your God chooses to establish His name. And you shall go to the priest who is in office at that time and say to him, ‘I declare today to the Lord [s]my God that I have entered the land which the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.’ Then the priest shall take the basket from your hand and set it before the altar of the Lord your God. And you shall respond and say before the Lord your God, ‘(U)My father was a [t]wandering Aramean, and he went down to Egypt and [u]resided there, (V)few in number; but there he became a (W)great, mighty, and populous nation. And the (X)Egyptians treated us badly and oppressed us, and imposed hard labor on us. Then (Y)we cried out to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our wretched condition, our trouble, and our oppression; (Z)and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand, an outstretched arm, and with great terror, and with signs and wonders; and He has brought us to this place, and has given us this land, (AA)a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And now behold, I have brought the first of the produce of the ground (AB)which You, Lord have given me.’ Then you shall set it before the Lord your God, and worship before the Lord your God; 11 and you, (AC)the Levite, and the stranger who is among you shall (AD)rejoice in all the good which the Lord your God has given you and your household.

12 (AE)When you have finished paying all the tithe of your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, then you shall give it to the Levite, to the stranger, to the [v]orphan, and to the widow, so that they may eat in your [w]towns and be satisfied. 13 And you shall say before the Lord your God, ‘I have removed the sacred portion from my house, and have also given it to the Levite, the stranger, the [x]orphan, and the widow, in accordance with all Your commandments which You have commanded me; (AF)I have not violated or forgotten any of Your commandments. 14 I have not eaten of it while mourning, nor have I removed any of it while I was unclean, nor offered any of it to the dead. I have listened to the voice of the Lord my God; I have acted in accordance with everything that You have commanded me. 15 (AG)Look down from Your holy dwelling place, from heaven, and bless Your people Israel, and the ground which You have given us, (AH)a land flowing with milk and honey just as You swore to our fathers.’

16 “This day the Lord your God commands you to perform these statutes and ordinances. Therefore you shall be careful to perform them (AI)with all your heart and with all your soul. 17 (AJ)Today you have declared the Lord to be your God, and [y]that you will walk in His ways and keep His statutes, His commandments, and His ordinances, and listen to His voice. 18 And the Lord has today declared you to be (AK)His people, His personal possession, just as He promised you, and [z]that you are to keep all His commandments; 19 and [aa]that He will (AL)put you high above all the nations which He has made, for glory, fame, and honor; and that you shall be (AM)a consecrated people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken.”

The Curses at Mount Ebal

27 Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep all the commandments which I am commanding you today. (AN)So it shall be on the day when you cross the Jordan to the land which the Lord your God is giving you, that you shall set up for yourself large stones and coat them with lime and write on them all the words of this Law, when you cross over, so that you may enter the land which the Lord your God is giving you, (AO)a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, [ab]promised you. So it shall be when you cross the Jordan, you shall set up these stones (AP)on Mount Ebal, [ac]as I am commanding you today, and you shall coat them with lime. Moreover, you shall build there an altar to the Lord your God, an altar of stones; you (AQ)shall not wield an iron tool on them. You shall build the altar of the Lord your God of [ad]uncut stones, and you shall offer on it burnt offerings to the Lord your God; and you shall sacrifice peace offerings and eat there, and (AR)rejoice before the Lord your God. You shall write on the [ae]stones all the words of this Law very clearly.”

Then Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying, “Be silent and listen, Israel! This day you have become a people for the Lord your God. 10 So you shall [af]obey the Lord your God, and do His commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today.”

11 Moses also commanded the people on that day, saying, 12 “When you cross the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on (AS)Mount Gerizim to bless the people: (AT)Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph, and Benjamin. 13 For the curse, these tribes shall stand on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14 The Levites shall then respond and say to all the people of Israel with a loud voice,

15 ‘Cursed is the person who makes (AU)a carved image or cast metal image, an abomination to the Lord, the work of the hands of a craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ And (AV)all the people shall reply and say, ‘Amen.’

16 (AW)Cursed is one who treats his father or mother contemptuously.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

17 (AX)Cursed is one who displaces his neighbor’s boundary marker.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

18 (AY)Cursed is one who misleads a person who is blind on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

19 (AZ)Cursed is one who distorts the justice due a stranger, an [ag]orphan, or a widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

20 (BA)Cursed is he who sleeps with his father’s wife, because he has [ah]uncovered his father’s garment.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

21 (BB)Cursed is one who has sexual intercourse with any animal.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

22 (BC)Cursed is he who sleeps with his sister, the daughter of his father or of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

23 (BD)Cursed is he who sleeps with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

24 (BE)Cursed is he who attacks his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

25 (BF)Cursed is he who accepts a bribe to attack an innocent person.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

26 (BG)Cursed is anyone who does not fulfill the words of this Law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

The Blessings at Mount Gerizim

28 (BH)Now it shall be, if you diligently [ai]obey the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I am commanding you today, that the Lord your God (BI)will put you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings will come to you and (BJ)reach you if you [aj]obey the Lord your God:

“Blessed will you be in the city, and blessed will you be (BK)in the [ak]country.

“Blessed will be the [al]children of your womb, the [am]produce of your ground, and the [an]offspring of your animals: the newborn of your herd and the young of your flock.

“Blessed will be your basket and your kneading bowl.

“Blessed will you be (BL)when you come in, and blessed will you be when you go out.

“The Lord will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be [ao]defeated by you; they will go out against you one way and will flee at your presence seven ways. The Lord will command the blessing for you in your [ap]barns and in (BM)everything that you put your hand to, and He will bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. (BN)The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, as He swore to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways. 10 So all the peoples of the earth will see that [aq](BO)you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will be afraid of you. 11 (BP)And the Lord will give you more than enough prosperity, in the [ar]children of your womb, in the [as]offspring of your livestock, and in the [at]produce of your ground, in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The Lord will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless every work of your hand; and (BQ)you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow. 13 (BR)And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail, and you will only be above, and not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the Lord your God which I am commanding you today, to [au]follow them carefully, 14 and (BS)do not turn aside from any of the words which I am commanding you today, to the right or the left, to pursue other gods to serve them.

Consequences of Disobedience

15 (BT)But it shall come about, if you do not [av]obey the Lord your God, to be careful to [aw]follow all His commandments and His statutes which I am commanding you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you:

16 (BU)Cursed will you be in the city, and cursed will you be in the [ax]country.

17 (BV)Cursed will be your basket and your kneading bowl.

18 (BW)Cursed will be the [ay]children of your womb, the [az]produce of your ground, the newborn of your herd, and the offspring of your flock.

19 (BX)Cursed will you be when you come in, and cursed will you be when you go out.

20 (BY)The Lord will send against you curses, panic, and (BZ)rebuke, in [ba]everything you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until (CA)you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have abandoned Me. 21 (CB)The Lord will make the plague cling to you until He has eliminated you from the land where you are entering to take possession of it. 22 (CC)The Lord will strike you with consumption, inflammation, fever, feverish heat, and with [bb]the sword, (CD)with blight, and with mildew, and they will pursue you until (CE)you perish. 23 [bc]The heaven which is over your head shall be bronze, and the earth which is under you, iron. 24 (CF)The Lord will make the rain of your land powder and dust; from heaven it shall come down on you until you are destroyed.

25 (CG)The Lord will cause you to be defeated by your enemies; you will go out one way against them, but you will flee seven ways from their presence, and you will (CH)be an example of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth. 26 (CI)Your dead bodies will [bd]serve as food for all birds of the sky and for the animals of the earth, and there will be no one to frighten them away.

27 (CJ)The Lord will strike you with the boils of Egypt and with (CK)tumors, the festering rash, and with scabies, from which you cannot be healed. 28 The Lord will strike you with insanity, blindness, and with confusion of [be]mind; 29 and you will be (CL)groping about at noon, just as a person who is blind gropes in the darkness, and you will not be successful in your ways; but you will only be [bf]oppressed and robbed all the time, with no one to save you. 30 (CM)You will [bg]betroth a woman, but another man will [bh]violate her; (CN)you will build a house, but you will not live in it; you will plant a vineyard, but you will not make use of its fruit. 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat of it; your donkey will be snatched away from you, and will not [bi]be restored to you; your [bj]sheep will be given to your enemies, and you will have no one to save you. 32 (CO)Your sons and your daughters will be given to another people, while your eyes look on and long for them constantly; but there will be nothing [bk]you can do. 33 (CP)A people whom you do not know will eat the produce of your ground and every product of your labor, and you will never be anything but oppressed and mistreated continually. 34 You will also be driven insane by the sight of [bl]what you see. 35 (CQ)The Lord will strike you on the knees and thighs with severe boils from which you cannot be healed, and strike you from the sole of your foot to the top of your head. 36 (CR)The Lord will bring you and your king, whom you appoint over you, to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you shall serve other gods, made of (CS)wood and stone. 37 And (CT)you will become an object of horror, a song of mockery, and an object of taunting among all the peoples where the Lord drives you.

38 (CU)You will bring out a great amount of seed to the field, but you will gather in little, because (CV)the locust will devour it. 39 (CW)You will plant and cultivate vineyards, but you will neither drink of the wine nor bring in the harvest, because the worm will eat it. 40 (CX)You will have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with the oil, because your olives will drop off prematurely. 41 (CY)You will father sons and daughters but they will not remain yours, because they will go into captivity. 42 (CZ)The cricket will take possession of all your trees and the produce of your ground. 43 (DA)The stranger who is among you will rise above you higher and higher, and you will go down lower and lower. 44 (DB)He will lend to you, but you will not lend to him; (DC)he will be the head, and you will be the tail.

45 “So all these curses shall come upon you and pursue you and overtake you (DD)until you are destroyed, because you would not [bm]obey the Lord your God by keeping His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you. 46 And they will become (DE)a sign and a wonder [bn]against you and your [bo]descendants forever.

47 (DF)Since you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and a cheerful heart, in gratitude for the abundance of all things, 48 you will serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you, (DG)in hunger, thirst, nakedness, and devoid of all things; and He (DH)will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you.

49 (DI)The Lord will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, (DJ)as the eagle swoops down; a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation [bp]with a defiant attitude, who will (DK)have no respect for the old, nor show favor to the young. 51 Furthermore, it will eat the [bq]offspring of your herd and the produce of your ground until you are destroyed; a nation that will leave you no grain, new wine, or oil, nor the newborn of your cattle or the young of your flock, until they have eliminated you. 52 (DL)And it will besiege you in all your [br]towns until your high and fortified walls in which you trusted come down throughout your land, and it will besiege you in all your [bs]towns throughout your land which the Lord your God has given you. 53 (DM)Then you will eat the [bt]offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters whom the Lord your God has given you, during the siege and the hardship by which your enemy will [bu]oppress you. 54 The man who is [bv]refined and very delicate among you [bw]will be hostile toward his brother, toward the wife [bx]he cherishes, and toward the rest of his children who are left, 55 so that he will not give even one of them any of the flesh of his children which he will eat, since he has nothing else left, during the siege and the hardship by which your enemy will [by]oppress you in all your [bz]towns. 56 (DN)The [ca]refined and delicate woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her delicateness and tenderness, [cb]will be hostile toward the husband [cc]she cherishes and toward her son and daughter, 57 and toward her afterbirth that comes from between her [cd]legs, and toward her children to whom she gives birth, because (DO)she will eat them secretly for lack of anything else, during the siege and the hardship with which your enemy will [ce]oppress you in your [cf]towns.

58 “If you are not careful to [cg]follow all the words of this Law that are written in this book, to [ch](DP)fear this honored and awesome (DQ)name, [ci]the Lord your God, 59 then the Lord will bring extraordinary plagues on you and [cj]your descendants, [ck]severe and lasting plagues, and miserable and chronic sicknesses. 60 (DR)And He will bring back on you every disease of Egypt of which you were afraid, and they will cling to you. 61 Also every sickness and every plague, which are not written in the book of this Law, the Lord will bring on you (DS)until you are destroyed. 62 Then you will be left few in [cl]number, (DT)whereas you were as numerous as the stars of heaven, because you did not [cm]obey the Lord your God. 63 And it will come about that, just as the Lord (DU)rejoiced over you to be good to you, and make you numerous, so will the Lord (DV)rejoice over you to wipe you out and destroy you; and you will be (DW)torn away from the land which you are entering to possess. 64 Furthermore, the Lord will (DX)scatter you among all the peoples, from one end of the earth to [cn]the other; and there you will (DY)serve other gods, made of wood and stone, which you and your fathers have not known. 65 (DZ)Among those nations you will find no peace, and there will be no resting place for the sole of your foot; but there (EA)the Lord will give you a trembling heart, failing of eyes, and despair of soul. 66 So your lives will be [co]hanging in doubt before you; and you will be terrified night and day, and have no assurance of your life. 67 (EB)In the morning you will say, ‘If only it were evening!’ And at evening you will say, ‘If only it were morning!’ because of the terror of your heart which you fear, and the sight of your eyes which you will see. 68 And the Lord will bring you back to Egypt in ships, by the way about which I said to you, ‘You will never see it again!’ And there you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there will be no buyer.”

The Covenant in Moab

29 [cp](EC)These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the sons of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the (ED)covenant which He had made with them at Horeb.

[cq]And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, “You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and all his servants, and to all his land; (EE)the great trials which your eyes have seen, those great signs and wonders. Yet to this day (EF)the Lord has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear. And I have led you in the wilderness for forty years; (EG)your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandal has not worn out on your foot. (EH)You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or other strong drink, in order that you might know that I am the Lord your God. (EI)When you [cr]reached this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us for battle, but we [cs]defeated them; and we took their land and (EJ)gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of the Manassites. (EK)So you will keep the words of this covenant and do them, (EL)in order that you may be successful in everything that you do.

10 “You stand today, all of you, before the Lord your God: your heads, your tribes, your elders and your officers, that is, all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones, your wives, and the stranger who is within your camps, from (EM)the one who gathers your firewood to the one who draws your water, 12 so that you may enter into the covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath which the Lord your God is making with you today, 13 in order that He may establish you today as His people, and that (EN)He may be your God, just as He spoke to you and as He swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

14 “Now it is not with you alone that I am (EO)making this covenant and this oath, 15 (EP)but both with those who stand here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God, and with those who are not with us here today 16 (for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the midst of the nations through which you passed; 17 moreover, you have seen their abominations and their idols made of (EQ)wood and stone, silver and gold, which they had with them); 18 (ER)so that there will not be among you a man or woman, or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; that there will not be among you (ES)a root bearing poisonous fruit and wormwood. 19 And it shall be when he hears the words of this curse, that he will consider himself fortunate in his heart, saying, ‘I will do well though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart in order [ct]to destroy the watered land along with the dry.’ 20 The Lord will not be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the Lord and (ET)His wrath will [cu](EU)burn against that person, and every curse that is written in this book will lie upon him, and the Lord will (EV)wipe out his name from under heaven. 21 Then the Lord will single him out for disaster from all the tribes of Israel, in accordance with all the curses of the covenant (EW)which is written in this Book of the Law.

22 “Now the future generation, your sons who rise up after you and (EX)the foreigner who comes from a distant land, when they see the plagues of that land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it, will say, 23 ‘All its land is (EY)brimstone and salt, (EZ)burned debris, [cv]unsown and unproductive, and no grass grows on it, like the overthrow of (FA)Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and in His wrath.’ 24 All the nations will say, ‘(FB)Why has the Lord done all this to this land? Why this great [cw]outburst of anger?’ 25 Then people will say, ‘It is (FC)because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt. 26 And they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they have not known and whom He had not [cx]assigned to them. 27 Therefore, the anger of the Lord burned against that land, (FD)to bring upon it every curse which is written in this book; 28 and (FE)the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger, fury, and in great wrath, and hurled them into another land, as it is this day.’

29 (FF)The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but (FG)the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, so that we may [cy]follow all the words of this Law.

Restoration Promised

30 “So it will be when all of these things have come upon you, (FH)the blessing and the curse which I have placed before you, and you [cz]call them to mind (FI)in all the nations where the Lord your God has scattered you, and you (FJ)return to the Lord your God and [da]obey Him (FK)with all your heart and soul in accordance with everything that I am commanding you today, you and your sons, then the Lord your God will (FL)restore [db]you from captivity, and have compassion on you, and (FM)will gather you again from all the peoples where the Lord your God has (FN)scattered you. If any of your scattered countrymen are at the [dc]ends of the earth, (FO)from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will [dd]bring you back. (FP)The Lord your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will be good to you and (FQ)make you more numerous than your fathers.

“Moreover, (FR)the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your [de]descendants, (FS)to love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul, so that you may live. (FT)And the Lord your God will [df]inflict all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. And you will again [dg]obey the Lord, and [dh]follow all His commandments which I am commanding you today. (FU)Then the Lord your God will prosper you [di]abundantly in every work of your hand, in the [dj]children of your womb, the [dk]offspring of your cattle, and in the [dl]produce of your ground, for (FV)the Lord will again rejoice over you for good, just as He rejoiced over your fathers; 10 [dm]if you [dn]obey the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which (FW)are written in this Book of the Law, [do]if you turn to the Lord your God (FX)with all your heart and soul.

11 “For this commandment which I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it far away. 12 It is not in heaven, [dp]that you could say, ‘(FY)Who will go up to heaven for us and get it for us, and proclaim it to us, so that we may [dq]follow it?’ 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, [dr]that you could say, ‘Who will cross the sea for us and get it for us and proclaim it to us, so that we may [ds]follow it?’ 14 On the contrary, the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may [dt]follow it.

Choose Life

15 “See, (FZ)I have placed before you today life and [du]happiness, and death and [dv]adversity, 16 in that I am commanding you today (GA)to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, so that you (GB)may live and become numerous, and that the Lord your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to take possession of it. 17 But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but allow yourself to be led astray and you worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today that (GC)you will certainly perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter [dw]and take possession of it. 19 (GD)I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have placed before you life and death, (GE)the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your [dx]descendants, 20 (GF)by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and (GG)by holding close to Him; (GH)for [dy]this is your life and the length of your days, [dz]so that you may live in (GI)the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”

Moses’ Last Counsel

31 So Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. And he said to them, “I am (GJ)120 years old today; (GK)I am no longer able to [ea]go out and come in, and the Lord has told me, ‘(GL)You shall not cross this Jordan.’ (GM)It is the Lord your God who is going to cross ahead of you; He Himself will destroy these nations before you, and you shall dispossess them. (GN)Joshua is the one who is going to cross ahead of you, just as the Lord has spoken. And the Lord will do to them just as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when He destroyed them. (GO)The Lord will turn them over to you, and you will do to them in accordance with all the commandments which I have commanded you. (GP)Be strong and courageous, (GQ)do not be afraid or in dread of them, for (GR)the Lord your God is the One who is going with you. (GS)He will not desert you or abandon you.”

Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “(GT)Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you will give it to them as an inheritance. And (GU)the Lord is the one who is going ahead of you; He will be with you. (GV)He will not desert you or abandon you. Do not fear and do not be dismayed.”

So Moses wrote this Law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi (GW)who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them, saying, “At the end of every seven years, at the time of (GX)the year of the release of debts, at the (GY)Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes (GZ)to appear before the Lord your God at (HA)the place which He will choose, (HB)you shall read this Law before all Israel [eb]so that they hear it. 12 Assemble the people, the men, the women, the children, and the stranger who is in your [ec]town, so that they may hear and (HC)learn and fear the Lord your God, and be careful to [ed]follow all the words of this Law. 13 And their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live on the land [ee]which you are about to cross the Jordan to [ef]possess.”

Israel Will Fall Away

14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, [eg](HD)the time for you to die is near; call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, and I will commission him.” (HE)So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting. 15 (HF)And the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood at the entrance of the tent. 16 The Lord said to Moses, “Behold, (HG)you are about to [eh]lie down with your fathers; and (HH)this people will arise and play the prostitute with the foreign gods of the land into the midst of which they are going, and (HI)they will abandon Me and break My covenant which I have made with them. 17 (HJ)Then My anger will be kindled against them on that day, and (HK)I will abandon them and (HL)hide My face from them, and they will be consumed, and many evils and troubles will find them; so they will say on that day, ‘(HM)Is it not because our God is not among us that these evils have found us?’ 18 But I will assuredly hide My face on that day because of all the evil that they will have done, for they will have turned away to other gods.

19 “Now then, (HN)write this song for yourselves, and teach it to the sons of Israel; put it [ei]on their lips, so that this song may be a witness for Me against the sons of Israel. 20 (HO)For when I bring them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to their fathers, and they eat and are satisfied and (HP)become [ej]prosperous, then they will turn to other gods and serve them, and spurn Me and break My covenant. 21 Then it will come about, (HQ)when many evils and troubles find them, that this song will testify before them as a witness (for it shall not be forgotten from the mouth of their [ek]descendants); for (HR)I know their inclination which they are [el]developing today, before I bring them into the land which I swore.” 22 (HS)So Moses wrote down this song on the same day, and taught it to the sons of Israel.

Joshua Is Commissioned

23 (HT)Then He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun, and said, “(HU)Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the sons of Israel into the land which I swore to them, and (HV)I will be with you.”

24 It came about, when Moses finished writing the words of this Law in a book until they were complete, 25 that Moses commanded the Levites (HW)who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying, 26 “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, so that it may [em]remain there as a witness against you. 27 For I know (HX)your rebellion and (HY)your [en]stubbornness; behold, as long as I have been alive with you until today, you have been rebellious against the Lord; how much more, then, after my death? 28 Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, that I may speak these words in their hearing and (HZ)call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against them. 29 For I know that after my death you will (IA)behave very corruptly and turn from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will confront you in the latter days, because you will do that which is evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking Him to anger with the work of your hands.”

30 Then Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song, until they were complete:

The Song of Moses

32 (IB)Listen, you heavens, and I will speak;
And let the earth hear the words of my mouth!
(IC)May my teaching drip as the rain,
My speech trickle as the dew,
(ID)As droplets on the fresh grass,
And as the showers on the vegetation.
(IE)For I proclaim the name of the Lord;
(IF)Ascribe greatness to our God!
(IG)The Rock! His work is perfect,
(IH)For all His ways are [eo]just;
(II)A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and just is He.
[ep](IJ)They have acted corruptly against Him,
They are not His children, because of their defect;
(IK)But are a perverse and crooked generation.
Is this what you (IL)do to the Lord,
(IM)You foolish and unwise people?
(IN)Is He not your Father who has purchased you?
(IO)He has made you and established you.
Remember the days of old,
Consider the years of all generations.
(IP)Ask your father and he will inform you,
Your elders, and they will tell you.
(IQ)When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,
When He separated the sons of [eq]mankind,
He set the boundaries of the peoples
(IR)According to the number of the [er]sons of Israel.
(IS)For the Lords portion is His people;
Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance.
10 (IT)He found him in a desert land,
And in the howling wasteland of a wilderness;
He encircled him, He cared for him,
He guarded him as (IU)the [es]apple of His eye.
11 (IV)As an eagle stirs up its nest,
And hovers over its young,
(IW)He spread His wings, He caught them,
He carried them on His pinions.
12 (IX)The Lord alone guided him,
(IY)And there was no foreign god with him.
13 (IZ)He had him ride on the high places of the earth,
And he ate the produce of the field;
(JA)And He had him suck honey from the rock,
And [et](JB)oil from the flinty rock,
14 Curds of the herd, and milk of the flock,
With fat of lambs
And rams, the breed of Bashan, and of goats,
(JC)With the best of the wheat;
And you drank wine of the (JD)blood of grapes.

15 (JE)But [eu]Jeshurun became fat and kicked—
You have become fat, thick, and obstinate—
(JF)Then he abandoned God (JG)who made him,
And [ev]rejected (JH)the Rock of his salvation.
16 (JI)They made Him jealous with strange gods;
(JJ)With abominations they provoked Him to anger.
17 (JK)They sacrificed to demons, who were not God,
(JL)To gods whom they have not known,
(JM)New gods who came lately,
Whom your fathers did not know.
18 You forgot (JN)the Rock who fathered you,
(JO)And forgot the God who gave you birth.

19 (JP)The Lord saw this, and spurned them
(JQ)Because of the provocation by His sons and daughters.
20 Then He said, ‘I will hide My face from them,
(JR)I will see what their end will be;
(JS)For they are a perverse generation,
(JT)Sons in whom there is no faithfulness.
21 (JU)They have made Me jealous with what is not God;
They have provoked Me to anger with their [ew](JV)idols.
(JW)So I will make them jealous with those who are not a people;
I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation,
22 (JX)For a fire has flared in My anger,
And it burns to the lowest part of [ex]Sheol,
(JY)And devours the earth with its yield,
And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

23 (JZ)I will add misfortunes to them;
(KA)I will use up My arrows on them.
24 (KB)They will be wasted by famine, and emaciated by [ey]plague
(KC)And a bitter epidemic;
(KD)And the teeth of beasts I will send against them,
(KE)With the venom of crawling things of the dust.
25 (KF)Outside the sword will make them childless,
And inside, terror—
(KG)Both young man and virgin,
The nursing child with the man of gray hair.
26 I would have said, “(KH)I will wipe them out,
(KI)I will remove the mention of [ez]their name from humanity,”
27 Had I not feared the provocation by the enemy,
That their adversaries would misjudge,
That they would say, “(KJ)Our hand is [fa]triumphant,
And the Lord has not performed all this.”’

28 (KK)For they are a nation [fb]destitute of counsel,
And there is no understanding in them.
29 (KL)If only they were wise and they understood this;
(KM)If only they would discern their [fc]future!
30 (KN)How could one chase a thousand,
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their (KO)Rock had sold them,
And the Lord had given them up?
31 Indeed, their rock is not like our Rock;
(KP)Even our enemies [fd]themselves judge this.
32 For their vine is from the vine of Sodom,
And from the fields of Gomorrah;
Their grapes are grapes of (KQ)poison,
Their clusters, bitter.
33 Their wine is the venom of [fe]serpents,
And the [ff]deadly poison of vipers.

34 (KR)Is it not stored up with Me,
Sealed up in My treasuries?
35 (KS)Vengeance is Mine, and retribution;
(KT)In due time their foot will slip.
(KU)For the day of their disaster is near,
And the impending things are hurrying to them.’
36 (KV)For the Lord will vindicate His people,
(KW)And will have compassion on His servants,
When He sees that their [fg]strength is gone,
And there is none remaining, bond or free.
37 And He will say, ‘(KX)Where are their gods,
The rock in which they took refuge?
38 (KY)Those who ate the fat of their sacrifices,
And drank the wine of their drink offering?
(KZ)Let them rise up and help you,
Let them be your protection!
39 (LA)See now that I, I am He,
(LB)And there is no god besides Me;
(LC)It is I who put to death and give life.
(LD)I have wounded and it is I who heal,
(LE)And there is no one who can save anyone from My hand.
40 Indeed, (LF)I raise My hand to heaven,
And say, as I live forever,
41 (LG)If I have sharpened [fh]My flashing sword,
And My hand has taken hold of justice,
(LH)I will return vengeance on My adversaries,
And I will repay those who hate Me.
42 (LI)I will make My arrows drunk with blood,
(LJ)And My sword will devour flesh,
With the blood of the slain and the captives,
From the long-haired [fi]leaders of the enemy.’
43 (LK)Rejoice, you nations, with His people;
(LL)For He will avenge the blood of His servants,
(LM)And will return vengeance on His adversaries,
(LN)And will atone for His land and His people.”

44 Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he, with [fj](LO)Joshua the son of Nun. 45 When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, “(LP)Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you will command (LQ)your sons to [fk]follow carefully, all the words of this Law. 47 For it is not a [fl]trivial matter for you; indeed (LR)it is your life. And (LS)by this word you will prolong your days in the land, [fm]which you are about to cross the Jordan to [fn]possess.”

48 Now (LT)the Lord spoke to Moses that very same day, saying, 49 (LU)Go up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab [fo]opposite Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel as a possession. 50 Then you are to die on the mountain where you ascend, and be (LV)gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51 (LW)because you broke faith with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the (LX)wilderness of Zin, because you did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel. 52 (LY)For you will see the land at a distance but (LZ)you will not go there, into the land which I am giving the sons of Israel.”

The Blessing by Moses

33 Now this is the blessing with which Moses (MA)the man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death. He said,

(MB)The Lord came from Sinai,
(MC)And [fp]dawned on them from Seir;
(MD)He shone from Mount Paran,
And He came from (ME)the midst of myriads of [fq]holy ones;
(MF)At His right hand there was [fr]flashing lightning for them.
(MG)Indeed, He loves [fs]the people;
(MH)All [ft]Your holy ones are in Your hand,
(MI)And they [fu]followed in Your steps;
Everyone takes of Your words.
(MJ)Moses issued to us the Law,
(MK)A possession for the assembly of Jacob.
(ML)And He was king in [fv]Jeshurun,
When the heads of the people gathered,
The tribes of Israel together.

(MM)May Reuben live and not die,
Nor may his people be few.”

(MN)And this was regarding Judah; so he said:

“Hear, Lord, the voice of Judah,
And bring him to his people.
With his hands he contended for [fw]them,
And may You be a help against his adversaries.”

Of Levi he said,

Let Your (MO)Thummim and Your Urim belong to Your (MP)godly man,
(MQ)Whom You tested at Massah,
With [fx]whom You contended at the waters of Meribah;
(MR)Who said of his father and his mother,
‘I did not consider them’;
And he did not acknowledge his brothers,
Nor did he regard his own sons,
For (MS)they kept Your word,
And complied with Your covenant.
10 (MT)They will teach Your ordinances to Jacob,
And Your Law to Israel.
(MU)They shall put [fy]incense before You,
And (MV)whole burnt offerings on Your altar.
11 Lord, bless his strength,
And accept the work of his hands;
Smash the [fz]hips of those who rise up against him,
And those who hate him, so that they do not rise again.”

12 Of Benjamin he said,

(MW)May the beloved of the Lord live in security beside Him
(MX)Who shields him all the day long,
(MY)And he lives between His shoulders.”

13 Of Joseph he said,

(MZ)Blessed of the Lord be his land,
With the choice things of heaven, with the dew,
And from the deep waters lying beneath,
14 And with the choice yield of the sun,
And the choice produce of the months;
15 And with the [ga]best things of (NA)the ancient mountains,
With the choice things of the everlasting hills,
16 And with the choice things of the earth and its fullness,
And the favor (NB)of Him who dwelt in the bush.
Let it come to the head of Joseph,
And to the top of the head of the one who was prince among his brothers.
17 As the firstborn of his ox, majesty is his,
And his horns are the horns of (NC)the wild ox;
With them he will (ND)gore the peoples
All [gb]at once, to the ends of the earth.
And those are the ten thousands of Ephraim,
And those are the thousands of Manasseh.”

18 (NE)Of Zebulun he said,

“Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out,
And, Issachar, in your tents.
19 (NF)They will call peoples to the mountain;
There they will offer (NG)righteous sacrifices;
For they will [gc]draw out (NH)the abundance of the seas,
And the hidden treasures of the sand.”

20 (NI)Of Gad he said,

“Blessed is the one who enlarges Gad;
He lies down (NJ)as a [gd]lion,
And tears the arm, also the crown of the head.
21 (NK)Then he [ge]selected the choicest part for himself,
(NL)For there the ruler’s portion was [gf]reserved;
(NM)And he came with the leaders of the people;
(NN)He executed the justice of the Lord,
And His ordinances with Israel.”

22 (NO)Of Dan he said,

“Dan is (NP)a lion’s cub;
He leaps out from Bashan.”

23 Of Naphtali he said,

(NQ)Naphtali, satisfied with favor,
And full of the blessing of the Lord,
Take possession of the sea and the south.”

24 (NR)Of Asher he said,

“More blessed than sons is Asher;
May he be favored by his brothers,
(NS)And may he dip his foot in olive oil.
25 (NT)Your [gg]bars will be iron and bronze,
(NU)And as your days, so will your strength be.

26 (NV)There is no one like the God of [gh]Jeshurun,
(NW)Who rides the heavens [gi]to your help,
And the clouds in His majesty.
27 (NX)The eternal God is a [gj]hiding place,
(NY)And underneath are the everlasting arms;
(NZ)And He drove out the enemy from you,
(OA)And said, ‘Destroy!’
28 (OB)So Israel lives in security,
(OC)The fountain of Jacob secluded,
(OD)In a land of grain and new wine;
(OE)His heavens also drip down dew.
29 (OF)Blessed are you, Israel;
(OG)Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord,
(OH)The shield of your help,
(OI)And He who is the sword of your majesty!
(OJ)So your enemies will cringe before you,
(OK)And you will trample on their high places.”

The Death of Moses

34 (OL)Now Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the Lord (OM)showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the [gk](ON)western sea, and the [gl]Negev and the territory in the Valley of Jericho, (OO)the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land which (OP)I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your [gm]descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not go over there.” So Moses (OQ)the servant of the Lord (OR)died there in the land of Moab, in accordance with the [gn]word of the Lord. And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, (OS)opposite Beth-peor; but (OT)no one knows his burial place to this day. Although Moses was (OU)120 years old when he died, (OV)his eyesight was not dim, nor had his vigor left him. So the sons of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days; then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.

Now Joshua the son of Nun was (OW)filled with the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 Since that time (OX)no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom (OY)the Lord knew face to face, 11 for all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land— 12 and for all the mighty [go]power and all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

25 When people have a dispute, they are to take it to court and the judges(A) will decide the case,(B) acquitting(C) the innocent and condemning the guilty.(D) If the guilty person deserves to be beaten,(E) the judge shall make them lie down and have them flogged in his presence with the number of lashes the crime deserves, but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes.(F) If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes.(G)

Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.(H)

If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother shall take her and marry her and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to her.(I) The first son she bears shall carry on the name of the dead brother so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.(J)

However, if a man does not want to marry his brother’s wife,(K) she shall go to the elders at the town gate(L) and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to carry on his brother’s name in Israel. He will not fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law to me.”(M) Then the elders of his town shall summon him and talk to him. If he persists in saying, “I do not want to marry her,” his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one of his sandals,(N) spit in his face(O) and say, “This is what is done to the man who will not build up his brother’s family line.” 10 That man’s line shall be known in Israel as The Family of the Unsandaled.

11 If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, 12 you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.(P)

13 Do not have two differing weights in your bag—one heavy, one light.(Q) 14 Do not have two differing measures in your house—one large, one small. 15 You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long(R) in the land the Lord your God is giving you. 16 For the Lord your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly.(S)

17 Remember what the Amalekites(T) did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt. 18 When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.(U) 19 When the Lord your God gives you rest(V) from all the enemies(W) around you in the land he is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the name of Amalek(X) from under heaven. Do not forget!

Firstfruits and Tithes

26 When you have entered the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, take some of the firstfruits(Y) of all that you produce from the soil of the land the Lord your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name(Z) and say to the priest in office at the time, “I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come to the land the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.” The priest shall take the basket from your hands and set it down in front of the altar of the Lord your God. Then you shall declare before the Lord your God: “My father was a wandering(AA) Aramean,(AB) and he went down into Egypt with a few people(AC) and lived there and became a great nation,(AD) powerful and numerous. But the Egyptians mistreated us and made us suffer,(AE) subjecting us to harsh labor.(AF) Then we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our voice(AG) and saw(AH) our misery,(AI) toil and oppression.(AJ) So the Lord brought us out of Egypt(AK) with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm,(AL) with great terror and with signs and wonders.(AM) He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey;(AN) 10 and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you, Lord, have given me.(AO)” Place the basket before the Lord your God and bow down before him. 11 Then you and the Levites(AP) and the foreigners residing among you shall rejoice(AQ) in all the good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household.

12 When you have finished setting aside a tenth(AR) of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe,(AS) you shall give it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied. 13 Then say to the Lord your God: “I have removed from my house the sacred portion and have given it to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, according to all you commanded. I have not turned aside from your commands nor have I forgotten any of them.(AT) 14 I have not eaten any of the sacred portion while I was in mourning, nor have I removed any of it while I was unclean,(AU) nor have I offered any of it to the dead. I have obeyed the Lord my God; I have done everything you commanded me. 15 Look down from heaven,(AV) your holy dwelling place, and bless(AW) your people Israel and the land you have given us as you promised on oath to our ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey.”

Follow the Lord’s Commands

16 The Lord your God commands you this day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully observe them with all your heart and with all your soul.(AX) 17 You have declared this day that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in obedience to him, that you will keep his decrees, commands and laws—that you will listen to him.(AY) 18 And the Lord has declared this day that you are his people, his treasured possession(AZ) as he promised, and that you are to keep all his commands. 19 He has declared that he will set you in praise,(BA) fame and honor high above all the nations(BB) he has made and that you will be a people holy(BC) to the Lord your God, as he promised.

The Altar on Mount Ebal

27 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: “Keep all these commands(BD) that I give you today. When you have crossed the Jordan(BE) into the land the Lord your God is giving you, set up some large stones(BF) and coat them with plaster.(BG) Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey,(BH) just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. And when you have crossed the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal,(BI) as I command you today, and coat them with plaster. Build there an altar(BJ) to the Lord your God, an altar of stones. Do not use any iron tool(BK) on them. Build the altar of the Lord your God with fieldstones and offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God. Sacrifice fellowship offerings(BL) there, eating them and rejoicing(BM) in the presence of the Lord your God.(BN) And you shall write very clearly all the words of this law on these stones(BO) you have set up.”(BP)

Curses From Mount Ebal

Then Moses and the Levitical(BQ) priests said to all Israel, “Be silent, Israel, and listen! You have now become the people of the Lord your God.(BR) 10 Obey the Lord your God and follow his commands and decrees that I give you today.”

11 On the same day Moses commanded the people:

12 When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on Mount Gerizim(BS) to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar,(BT) Joseph and Benjamin.(BU) 13 And these tribes shall stand on Mount Ebal(BV) to pronounce curses: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali.

14 The Levites shall recite to all the people of Israel in a loud voice:

15 “Cursed is anyone who makes an idol(BW)—a thing detestable(BX) to the Lord, the work of skilled hands—and sets it up in secret.”

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”(BY)

16 “Cursed is anyone who dishonors their father or mother.”(BZ)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

17 “Cursed is anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary stone.”(CA)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

18 “Cursed is anyone who leads the blind astray on the road.”(CB)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

19 “Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner,(CC) the fatherless or the widow.”(CD)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

20 “Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his father’s wife, for he dishonors his father’s bed.”(CE)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

21 “Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with any animal.”(CF)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

22 “Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.”(CG)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

23 “Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his mother-in-law.”(CH)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

24 “Cursed is anyone who kills(CI) their neighbor secretly.”(CJ)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

25 “Cursed is anyone who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person.”(CK)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

26 “Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out.”(CL)

Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”(CM)

Blessings for Obedience

28 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow(CN) all his commands(CO) I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.(CP) All these blessings will come on you(CQ) and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

You will be blessed(CR) in the city and blessed in the country.(CS)

The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.(CT)

Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.(CU)

The Lord will grant that the enemies(CV) who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.(CW)

The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless(CX) you in the land he is giving you.

The Lord will establish you as his holy people,(CY) as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands(CZ) of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him. 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name(DA) of the Lord, and they will fear you. 11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock(DB) and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.(DC)

12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse(DD) of his bounty,(DE) to send rain(DF) on your land in season and to bless(DG) all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.(DH) 13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow(DI) them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.(DJ) 14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left,(DK) following other gods and serving them.

Curses for Disobedience

15 However, if you do not obey(DL) the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today,(DM) all these curses will come on you and overtake you:(DN)

16 You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country.(DO)

17 Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed.(DP)

18 The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.(DQ)

19 You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out.(DR)

20 The Lord will send on you curses,(DS) confusion and rebuke(DT) in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin(DU) because of the evil(DV) you have done in forsaking him.[a] 21 The Lord will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess.(DW) 22 The Lord will strike you with wasting disease,(DX) with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought,(DY) with blight(DZ) and mildew, which will plague(EA) you until you perish.(EB) 23 The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron.(EC) 24 The Lord will turn the rain(ED) of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed.

25 The Lord will cause you to be defeated(EE) before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven,(EF) and you will become a thing of horror(EG) to all the kingdoms on earth.(EH) 26 Your carcasses will be food for all the birds(EI) and the wild animals, and there will be no one to frighten them away.(EJ) 27 The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt(EK) and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured. 28 The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. 29 At midday you will grope(EL) about like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue(EM) you.

30 You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and rape her.(EN) You will build a house, but you will not live in it.(EO) You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy its fruit.(EP) 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will eat none of it. Your donkey will be forcibly taken from you and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and no one will rescue them. 32 Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation,(EQ) and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. 33 A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression(ER) all your days.(ES) 34 The sights you see will drive you mad.(ET) 35 The Lord will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils(EU) that cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the top of your head.(EV)

36 The Lord will drive you and the king(EW) you set over you to a nation unknown to you or your ancestors.(EX) There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone.(EY) 37 You will become a thing of horror,(EZ) a byword(FA) and an object of ridicule(FB) among all the peoples where the Lord will drive you.(FC)

38 You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little,(FD) because locusts(FE) will devour(FF) it. 39 You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine(FG) or gather the grapes, because worms will eat(FH) them.(FI) 40 You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off.(FJ) 41 You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.(FK) 42 Swarms of locusts(FL) will take over all your trees and the crops of your land.

43 The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower.(FM) 44 They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them.(FN) They will be the head, but you will be the tail.(FO)

45 All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you(FP) until you are destroyed,(FQ) because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. 46 They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever.(FR) 47 Because you did not serve(FS) the Lord your God joyfully and gladly(FT) in the time of prosperity, 48 therefore in hunger and thirst,(FU) in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke(FV) on your neck(FW) until he has destroyed you.

49 The Lord will bring a nation against you(FX) from far away, from the ends of the earth,(FY) like an eagle(FZ) swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand,(GA) 50 a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old(GB) or pity for the young. 51 They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine(GC) or olive oil,(GD) nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined.(GE) 52 They will lay siege(GF) to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the Lord your God is giving you.(GG)

53 Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you.(GH) 54 Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, 55 and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities.(GI) 56 The most gentle and sensitive(GJ) woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter(GK) 57 the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For in her dire need she intends to eat them(GL) secretly because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of your cities.

58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law,(GM) which are written in this book, and do not revere(GN) this glorious and awesome name(GO)—the Lord your God— 59 the Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. 60 He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt(GP) that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law,(GQ) until you are destroyed.(GR) 62 You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky(GS) will be left but few(GT) in number, because you did not obey the Lord your God. 63 Just as it pleased(GU) the Lord to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please(GV) him to ruin and destroy you.(GW) You will be uprooted(GX) from the land you are entering to possess.

64 Then the Lord will scatter(GY) you among all nations,(GZ) from one end of the earth to the other.(HA) There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.(HB) 65 Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place(HC) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes(HD) weary with longing, and a despairing heart.(HE) 66 You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. 67 In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!”—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see.(HF) 68 The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again.(HG) There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.

Renewal of the Covenant

29 [b]These are the terms of the covenant the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab,(HH) in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.(HI)

Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them:

Your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land.(HJ) With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those signs and great wonders.(HK) But to this day the Lord has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear.(HL) Yet the Lord says, “During the forty years that I led(HM) you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet.(HN) You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink.(HO) I did this so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.”(HP)

When you reached this place, Sihon(HQ) king of Heshbon(HR) and Og king of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them.(HS) We took their land and gave it as an inheritance(HT) to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.(HU)

Carefully follow(HV) the terms of this covenant,(HW) so that you may prosper in everything you do.(HX) 10 All of you are standing today in the presence of the Lord your God—your leaders and chief men, your elders and officials, and all the other men of Israel, 11 together with your children and your wives, and the foreigners living in your camps who chop your wood and carry your water.(HY) 12 You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, a covenant the Lord is making with you this day and sealing with an oath, 13 to confirm you this day as his people,(HZ) that he may be your God(IA) as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 14 I am making this covenant,(IB) with its oath, not only with you 15 who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God but also with those who are not here today.(IC)

16 You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here. 17 You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold.(ID) 18 Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns(IE) away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.(IF)

19 When such a person hears the words of this oath and they invoke a blessing(IG) on themselves, thinking, “I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way,”(IH) they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. 20 The Lord will never be willing to forgive(II) them; his wrath and zeal(IJ) will burn(IK) against them. All the curses written in this book will fall on them, and the Lord will blot(IL) out their names from under heaven. 21 The Lord will single them out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster,(IM) according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law.(IN)

22 Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it.(IO) 23 The whole land will be a burning waste(IP) of salt(IQ) and sulfur—nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah,(IR) Admah and Zeboyim, which the Lord overthrew in fierce anger.(IS) 24 All the nations will ask: “Why has the Lord done this to this land?(IT) Why this fierce, burning anger?”

25 And the answer will be: “It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.(IU) 26 They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. 27 Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book.(IV) 28 In furious anger and in great wrath(IW) the Lord uprooted(IX) them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now.”

29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God,(IY) but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.(IZ)

Prosperity After Turning to the Lord

30 When all these blessings and curses(JA) I have set before you come on you and you take them to heart wherever the Lord your God disperses you among the nations,(JB) and when you and your children return(JC) to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart(JD) and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes[c](JE) and have compassion(JF) on you and gather(JG) you again from all the nations where he scattered(JH) you.(JI) Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens,(JJ) from there the Lord your God will gather(JK) you and bring you back.(JL) He will bring(JM) you to the land that belonged to your ancestors, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous(JN) than your ancestors. The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants,(JO) so that you may love(JP) him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live. The Lord your God will put all these curses(JQ) on your enemies who hate and persecute you.(JR) You will again obey the Lord and follow all his commands I am giving you today. Then the Lord your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land.(JS) The Lord will again delight(JT) in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your ancestors, 10 if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law(JU) and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.(JV)

The Offer of Life or Death

11 Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.(JW) 12 It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven(JX) to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”(JY) 13 Nor is it beyond the sea,(JZ) so that you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it?”(KA) 14 No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.(KB)

15 See, I set before you today life(KC) and prosperity,(KD) death(KE) and destruction.(KF) 16 For I command you today to love(KG) the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live(KH) and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

17 But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, 18 I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed.(KI) You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

19 This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you(KJ) that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.(KK) Now choose life, so that you and your children may live 20 and that you may love(KL) the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life,(KM) and he will give(KN) you many years in the land(KO) he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Joshua to Succeed Moses

31 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: “I am now a hundred and twenty years old(KP) and I am no longer able to lead you.(KQ) The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’(KR) The Lord your God himself will cross(KS) over ahead of you.(KT) He will destroy these nations(KU) before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross(KV) over ahead of you, as the Lord said. And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og,(KW) the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. The Lord will deliver(KX) them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous.(KY) Do not be afraid or terrified(KZ) because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you;(LA) he will never leave you(LB) nor forsake(LC) you.”

Then Moses summoned Joshua and said(LD) to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them,(LE) and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;(LF) he will never leave you nor forsake you.(LG) Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Public Reading of the Law

So Moses wrote(LH) down this law and gave it to the Levitical priests, who carried(LI) the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 Then Moses commanded them: “At the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts,(LJ) during the Festival of Tabernacles,(LK) 11 when all Israel comes to appear(LL) before the Lord your God at the place he will choose,(LM) you shall read this law(LN) before them in their hearing. 12 Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn(LO) to fear(LP) the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law. 13 Their children,(LQ) who do not know this law, must hear it and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

Israel’s Rebellion Predicted

14 The Lord said to Moses, “Now the day of your death(LR) is near. Call Joshua(LS) and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, where I will commission him.(LT)” So Moses and Joshua came and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.(LU)

15 Then the Lord appeared at the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the cloud stood over the entrance to the tent.(LV) 16 And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors,(LW) and these people will soon prostitute(LX) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake(LY) me and break the covenant I made with them. 17 And in that day I will become angry(LZ) with them and forsake(MA) them; I will hide(MB) my face(MC) from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters(MD) and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’(ME) 18 And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.

19 “Now write(MF) down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness(MG) for me against them. 20 When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors,(MH) and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods(MI) and worship them,(MJ) rejecting me and breaking my covenant.(MK) 21 And when many disasters and calamities come on them,(ML) this song will testify against them, because it will not be forgotten by their descendants. I know what they are disposed to do,(MM) even before I bring them into the land I promised them on oath.” 22 So Moses wrote(MN) down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites.

23 The Lord gave this command(MO) to Joshua son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous,(MP) for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you.”

24 After Moses finished writing(MQ) in a book the words of this law(MR) from beginning to end, 25 he gave this command to the Levites who carried(MS) the ark of the covenant of the Lord: 26 “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.(MT) 27 For I know how rebellious(MU) and stiff-necked(MV) you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die! 28 Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth to testify against them.(MW) 29 For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt(MX) and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster(MY) will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made.”

The Song of Moses

30 And Moses recited the words of this song from beginning to end in the hearing of the whole assembly of Israel:

32 Listen,(MZ) you heavens,(NA) and I will speak;
    hear, you earth, the words of my mouth.(NB)
Let my teaching fall like rain(NC)
    and my words descend like dew,(ND)
like showers(NE) on new grass,
    like abundant rain on tender plants.

I will proclaim(NF) the name of the Lord.(NG)
    Oh, praise the greatness(NH) of our God!
He is the Rock,(NI) his works are perfect,(NJ)
    and all his ways are just.
A faithful God(NK) who does no wrong,
    upright(NL) and just is he.(NM)

They are corrupt and not his children;
    to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.(NN)
Is this the way you repay(NO) the Lord,
    you foolish(NP) and unwise people?(NQ)
Is he not your Father,(NR) your Creator,[d]
    who made you and formed you?(NS)

Remember the days of old;(NT)
    consider the generations long past.(NU)
Ask your father and he will tell you,
    your elders, and they will explain to you.(NV)
When the Most High(NW) gave the nations their inheritance,
    when he divided all mankind,(NX)
he set up boundaries(NY) for the peoples
    according to the number of the sons of Israel.[e](NZ)
For the Lord’s portion(OA) is his people,
    Jacob his allotted inheritance.(OB)

10 In a desert(OC) land he found him,
    in a barren and howling waste.(OD)
He shielded(OE) him and cared for him;
    he guarded him as the apple of his eye,(OF)
11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest
    and hovers over its young,(OG)
that spreads its wings to catch them
    and carries them aloft.(OH)
12 The Lord alone led(OI) him;(OJ)
    no foreign god was with him.(OK)

13 He made him ride on the heights(OL) of the land
    and fed him with the fruit of the fields.
He nourished him with honey from the rock,(OM)
    and with oil(ON) from the flinty crag,
14 with curds and milk from herd and flock
    and with fattened lambs and goats,
with choice rams of Bashan(OO)
    and the finest kernels of wheat.(OP)
You drank the foaming blood of the grape.(OQ)

15 Jeshurun[f](OR) grew fat(OS) and kicked;
    filled with food, they became heavy and sleek.
They abandoned(OT) the God who made them
    and rejected the Rock(OU) their Savior.
16 They made him jealous(OV) with their foreign gods
    and angered(OW) him with their detestable idols.
17 They sacrificed(OX) to false gods,(OY) which are not God—
    gods they had not known,(OZ)
    gods that recently appeared,(PA)
    gods your ancestors did not fear.
18 You deserted the Rock, who fathered you;
    you forgot(PB) the God who gave you birth.

19 The Lord saw this and rejected them(PC)
    because he was angered by his sons and daughters.(PD)
20 “I will hide my face(PE) from them,” he said,
    “and see what their end will be;
for they are a perverse generation,(PF)
    children who are unfaithful.(PG)
21 They made me jealous(PH) by what is no god
    and angered me with their worthless idols.(PI)
I will make them envious by those who are not a people;
    I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.(PJ)
22 For a fire will be kindled by my wrath,(PK)
    one that burns down to the realm of the dead below.(PL)
It will devour(PM) the earth and its harvests(PN)
    and set afire the foundations of the mountains.(PO)

23 “I will heap calamities(PP) on them
    and spend my arrows(PQ) against them.
24 I will send wasting famine(PR) against them,
    consuming pestilence(PS) and deadly plague;(PT)
I will send against them the fangs of wild beasts,(PU)
    the venom of vipers(PV) that glide in the dust.(PW)
25 In the street the sword will make them childless;
    in their homes terror(PX) will reign.(PY)
The young men and young women will perish,
    the infants and those with gray hair.(PZ)
26 I said I would scatter(QA) them
    and erase their name from human memory,(QB)
27 but I dreaded the taunt of the enemy,
    lest the adversary misunderstand(QC)
and say, ‘Our hand has triumphed;
    the Lord has not done all this.’”(QD)

28 They are a nation without sense,
    there is no discernment(QE) in them.
29 If only they were wise and would understand this(QF)
    and discern what their end will be!(QG)
30 How could one man chase a thousand,
    or two put ten thousand to flight,(QH)
unless their Rock had sold them,(QI)
    unless the Lord had given them up?(QJ)
31 For their rock is not like our Rock,(QK)
    as even our enemies concede.(QL)
32 Their vine comes from the vine of Sodom(QM)
    and from the fields of Gomorrah.
Their grapes are filled with poison,(QN)
    and their clusters with bitterness.(QO)
33 Their wine is the venom of serpents,
    the deadly poison of cobras.(QP)

34 “Have I not kept this in reserve
    and sealed it in my vaults?(QQ)
35 It is mine to avenge;(QR) I will repay.(QS)
    In due time their foot will slip;(QT)
their day of disaster is near
    and their doom rushes upon them.(QU)

36 The Lord will vindicate his people(QV)
    and relent(QW) concerning his servants(QX)
when he sees their strength is gone
    and no one is left, slave(QY) or free.[g]
37 He will say: “Now where are their gods,
    the rock they took refuge in,(QZ)
38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices
    and drank the wine of their drink offerings?(RA)
Let them rise up to help you!
    Let them give you shelter!

39 “See now that I myself am he!(RB)
    There is no god besides me.(RC)
I put to death(RD) and I bring to life,(RE)
    I have wounded and I will heal,(RF)
    and no one can deliver out of my hand.(RG)
