La Nuova Diodati
9 Nell'anno primo di Dario, figlio di Assuero, della stirpe dei Medi, che fu costituito re sul regno dei Caldei,
2 nel primo anno del suo regno, io, Daniele, compresi dai libri il numero degli anni in cui, secondo la parola dell'Eterno indirizzata al profeta Geremia, dovevano essere portate a compimento le desolazioni di Gerusalemme, è cioè settant'anni.
3 Volsi quindi la mia faccia verso il Signore DIO, per cercarlo con preghiera e suppliche, col digiuno, col sacco e con la cenere.
4 Cosí feci la mia preghiera e confessione all'Eterno, il mio DIO, dicendo: «O Signore, Dio grande e tremendo, che conservi il tuo patto e la tua misericordia con quelli che ti amano e osservano i tuoi comandamenti,
5 abbiamo peccato e abbiamo agito perversamente, siamo stati malvagi e ci siamo ribellati, allontanandoci dai tuoi comandamenti e dai tuoi decreti.
6 Non abbiamo ascoltato i profeti, tuoi servi, che hanno parlato nel tuo nome ai nostri re, ai nostri capi, ai nostri padri e a tutto il popolo del paese.
7 O Signore, a te appartiene la giustizia, ma a noi la confusione della faccia come avviene oggi stesso agli uomini di Giuda, agli abitanti di Gerusalemme e a tutto Israele, a quelli vicini e a quelli lontani, in tutti i paesi in cui li hai dispersi, a motivo delle infedeltà che hanno commesso contro di te.
8 O Signore, a noi la confusione della faccia, ai nostri re, ai nostri capi e ai nostri padri, perché abbiamo peccato contro di te.
9 Al Signore nostro DIO appartengono la misericordia e il perdono, perché ci siamo ribellati contro di lui,
10 e non abbiamo ascoltato la voce dell'Eterno, il nostro DIO, per camminare nelle sue leggi, che ci aveva posto davanti per mezzo dei suoi servi, i profeti.
11 Sí, tutto Israele ha trasgredito la tua legge, si è sviato per non ubbidire alla tua voce; perciò si è riversata su di noi la maledizione e l'imprecazione scritta nella legge di Mosè, servo di DIO, perché abbiamo peccato contro di lui.
12 Cosí egli ha mandato a compimento le sue parole che aveva pronunciato contro di noi e contro i nostri giudici che ci hanno governato, facendo venire su di noi una grande calamità, perché sotto tutto il cielo non è mai stato fatto nulla di simile a ciò che è stato fatto a Gerusalemme.
13 Come è scritto nella legge di Mosè, tutta questa calamità ci è venuta addosso, tuttavia non abbiamo implorato l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, per convertirci dalle nostre iniquità e prestare attenzione alla tua verità.
14 Perciò l'Eterno ha tenuto in serbo questa calamità e la fatta venire su di noi, perché l'Eterno, il nostro DIO, è giusto in tutte le cose che fa, mentre noi non abbiamo ubbidito alla sua voce.
15 E ora, o Signore, DIO nostro, che facesti uscire il tuo popolo dal paese d'Egitto con mano potente e ti facesti un nome qual è oggi, noi abbiamo peccato, abbiamo agito malvagiamente.
16 O Signore, secondo tutta la tua giustizia, fa ti prego, che la tua ira e il tuo furore si allontanino da Gerusalemme, la tua città, il tuo monte santo, per i nostri peccati e per le iniquità dei nostri padri, Gerusalemme e il tuo popolo sono divenuti oggetto di vituperio per tutti quelli che ci circondano.
17 Perciò ora ascolta, o DIO nostro, la preghiera del tuo servo e le sue suppliche e fa' risplendere, per amore del Signore, il tuo volto sul tuo santuario che è desolato.
18 O mio DIO, porgi il tuo orecchio e ascolta; apri i tuoi occhi e guarda le nostre desolazioni e la città sulla quale è invocato il tuo nome, perché noi non presentiamo le nostre suppliche davanti a te per le nostre opere giuste, ma per le tue grandi compassioni.
19 O Signore, ascolta; Signore, perdona; Signore, presta attenzione e opera. Non indugiare, per amor di te stesso, o mio DIO, perché il tuo nome è invocato sulla tua città e sul tuo popolo».
20 Mentre io stavo ancora parlando, pregando e confessando il mio peccato e il peccato del mio popolo d'Israele, e presentavo la mia supplica davanti all'Eterno, il mio DIO, per il monte santo del mio DIO,
21 sí, mentre stavo ancora parlando in preghiera, quell'uomo Gabriele, che avevo visto in visione all'inizio, mandato con rapido volo, mi raggiunse verso l'ora dell'oblazione della sera.
22 Egli mi ammaestrò, mi parlò e disse: «Daniele, io sono venuto ora per metterti in grado di intendere.
23 All'inizio delle tue suppliche è uscita una parola e io sono venuto per fartela conoscere, perché tu sei grandemente amato. Fa' dunque attenzione alla parola e intendi la visione:
24 Settanta settimane sono stabilite per il tuo popolo e per la tua santa città, per far cessare la trasgressione, per mettere fine al peccato, per espiare l'iniquità, per far venire una giustizia eterna, per sigillare visione e profezia e per ungere il luogo santissimo.
25 Sappi perciò e intendi che da quando è uscito l'ordine di restaurare e ricostruire Gerusalemme, fino al Messia, il principe, vi saranno sette settimane e altre sessantadue settimane; essa sarà nuovamente ricostruita con piazza e fossato, ma in tempi angosciosi.
26 Dopo le sessantadue settimane il Messia sarà messo a morte e nessuno sarà per lui. E il popolo di un capo che verrà distruggerà la città e il santuario; la sua fine verrà con un'inondazione, e fino al termine della guerra sono decretate devastazioni.
27 Egli stipulerà pure un patto con molti per una settimana, ma nel mezzo della settimana farà cessare sacrificio e oblazione; e sulle ali delle abominazioni verrà un devastatore, finché la totale distruzione, che è decretata, sarà riversata sul devastatore».

Daniel’s Prayer
9 In the first year of Darius,(A) the son of Ahasuerus, a Mede by birth, who was made king over the Chaldean kingdom – 2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, understood from the books according to the word of the Lord to the prophet Jeremiah that the number of years for the desolation of Jerusalem would be seventy.(B) 3 So I turned my attention to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and petitions, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.(C)
4 I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed:
Ah, Lord – the great and awe-inspiring God(D) who keeps his gracious covenant(E) with those who love him(F) and keep his commands(G) – 5 we have sinned,(H) done wrong, acted wickedly, rebelled,(I) and turned away from your commands and ordinances.(J) 6 We have not listened to your servants the prophets,(K) who spoke in your name to our kings, leaders, ancestors, and all the people of the land.
7 Lord, righteousness belongs to you,(L) but this day public shame belongs to us: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel – those who are near and those who are far, in all the countries where you have banished them because of the disloyalty they have shown towards you. 8 Lord, public shame(M) belongs to us, our kings, our leaders, and our ancestors, because we have sinned against you.(N) 9 Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord our God, though we have rebelled against him 10 and have not obeyed the Lord our God by following his instructions that he set before us through his servants(O) the prophets.
11 All Israel has broken your law and turned away,(P) refusing to obey you. The promised curse[a] written in the law of Moses,(Q) the servant of God, has been poured out on us because we have sinned against him. 12 He has carried out his words(R) that he spoke against us and against our rulers[b](S) by bringing on us a disaster that is so great that nothing like what has been done to Jerusalem has ever been done(T) under all of heaven. 13 Just as it is written in the law of Moses,(U) all this disaster has come on us, yet we have not sought the favour of(V) the Lord our God by turning from our iniquities and paying attention to your truth.(W) 14 So the Lord kept the disaster in mind and brought it on us, for the Lord our God is righteous in all he has done. But we have not obeyed him.
15 Now, Lord our God – who brought your people out of the land of Egypt with a strong hand(X) and made your name renowned(Y) as it is this day – we have sinned, we have acted wickedly. 16 Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, may your anger and wrath(Z) turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain;(AA) for because of our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people have become an object of ridicule to all those around us.
17 Therefore, our God, hear the prayer and the petitions of your servant. Make your face shine(AB) on your desolate sanctuary(AC) for the Lord’s sake. 18 Listen closely,[c] my God, and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations and the city that bears your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before you based on our righteous acts, but based on your abundant compassion. 19 Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! My God, for your own sake, do not delay,(AD) because your city and your people bear your name.
The Seventy Weeks of Years
20 While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel,(AE) and presenting my petition before the Lord my God concerning the holy mountain of my God – 21 while I was praying, Gabriel,(AF) the man I had seen in the first vision,(AG) reached me in my extreme weariness, about the time of the evening offering.(AH) 22 He gave me this explanation: ‘Daniel, I’ve come now to give you understanding.(AI) 23 At the beginning of your petitions an answer went out, and I have come to give it, for you are treasured by God.[d](AJ) So consider the message and understand the vision:(AK)
24 Seventy weeks are decreed(AL)
about your people and your holy city –
to bring the rebellion to an end,
to put a stop to sin,
to atone for iniquity,
to bring in everlasting righteousness,(AM)
to seal up vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the most holy place.
25 Know and understand this:
From the issuing of the decree
to restore and rebuild Jerusalem(AN)
until an Anointed One,(AO) the ruler,[e]
will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks.
It will be rebuilt with a square and a moat,
but in difficult times.
26 After those sixty-two weeks
the Anointed One will be cut off(AP)
and will have nothing.
The people of the coming ruler
will destroy the city(AQ) and the sanctuary.[f]
The[g] end will come with a flood,(AR)
and until the end there will be[h] war;
desolations are decreed.
27 He will make a firm covenant[i]
with many for one week,
but in the middle of the week
he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering.
And the abomination of desolation(AS)
will be on a wing(AT) of the temple[j][k]
until the decreed destruction(AU)
is poured out on the desolator.’

9 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;
2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
4 And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;
5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.
8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.
9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;
10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.
11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.
12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.
13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.
14 Therefore hath the Lord watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the Lord our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.
15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
16 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake.
18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.
19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.
20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God;
21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
