Gabriel Brings an Answer

20 While I was still (A)speaking and praying, and (B)confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and [a]presenting my plea before the Lord my God in behalf of the holy mountain of my God, 21 while I was still speaking in prayer, the man (C)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision [b]previously, [c]came to me [d]in my extreme weariness about the time of the (D)evening offering. 22 And he instructed me and talked with me and said, “Daniel, I have come now to give you insight with (E)understanding. 23 At the (F)beginning of your pleas the [e]command was issued, and I have come to tell you, because you are [f](G)highly esteemed; so pay attention to the message and gain (H)understanding of the vision.

Seventy Weeks and the Messiah

24 “Seventy [g](I)weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to [h]finish the wrongdoing, to [i]make an end of sin, to (J)make atonement for guilt, to bring in (K)everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and [j]prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place. 25 So you are to know and understand that from the issuing of a [k](L)decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem, until [l](M)Messiah the (N)Prince, there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with [m]streets and moat, even in times of distress. 26 Then after the sixty-two weeks, the [n]Messiah will be (O)cut off and have [o]nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will (P)destroy the city and the sanctuary. And [p]its end will come with a (Q)flood; even to the end [q]there will be war; desolations are determined. 27 And he will confirm a covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of [r](R)abominations will come the one who [s]makes desolate, until a (S)complete destruction, one that is [t]decreed, gushes forth on the one who [u]makes desolate.”

The 70 Weeks of Years

20 While I was speaking, praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel,(A) and presenting my petition before Yahweh my God concerning the holy mountain of my God— 21 while I was praying, Gabriel,(B) the man I had seen in the first vision,(C) came to me in my extreme weariness, about the time of the evening offering.(D) 22 He gave me this explanation: “Daniel, I’ve come now to give you understanding.(E) 23 At the beginning of your petitions an answer went out, and I have come to give it, for you are treasured by God.(F) So consider the message and understand the vision:(G)

24 Seventy weeks[a] are decreed(H)
about your people and your holy city—
to bring the rebellion to an end,
to put a stop to sin,
to wipe away iniquity,
to bring in everlasting righteousness,(I)
to seal up vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the most holy place.
25 Know and understand this:
From the issuing of the decree
to restore and rebuild Jerusalem(J)
until Messiah(K) the Prince[b]
will be seven weeks and 62 weeks.[c]
It will be rebuilt with a plaza and a moat,
but in difficult times.
26 After those 62 weeks[d]
the Messiah will be cut off(L)
and will have nothing.
The people of the coming prince
will destroy the city(M) and the sanctuary.
The[e] end will come with a flood,(N)
and until the end there will be[f] war;
desolations are decreed.
27 He will make a firm covenant[g]
with many for one week,[h]
but in the middle of the week
he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering.
And the abomination of desolation(O)
will be on a wing(P) of the temple[i][j]
until the decreed destruction(Q)
is poured out on the desolator.”
