Gabriel Brings Understanding

20 Now while I was (A)speaking and praying, and (B)confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and [a]presenting my supplication before Yahweh my God in behalf of the holy mountain of my God, 21 and while I was still speaking in prayer, then the man (C)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision [b]previously, [c]touched me [d]in my extreme weariness about the time of the (D)evening offering. 22 Then he made me understand and spoke with me and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you insight with (E)understanding. 23 At the (F)beginning of your supplications the word was issued, so I have come to tell you, for you are [e](G)highly esteemed; so understand the message and gain (H)understanding in what has appeared.

Seventy Weeks and the Messiah

24 “Seventy [f](I)weeks have been determined for your people and for your holy city, to [g]finish the transgression, to [h]make an end of sin, to (J)make atonement for iniquity, to bring in (K)everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and [i]prophecy, and to anoint the Holy of Holies. 25 So you are to know and have insight that from the going out of a [j](L)word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until [k](M)Messiah the (N)Prince, there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be restored and rebuilt, with [l]plaza and moat, even in times of distress. 26 Then after the sixty-two weeks the [m]Messiah will be (O)cut off and have [n]nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will (P)destroy the city and the sanctuary. And [o]its end will come with a (Q)flood; even to the end [p]there will be war; desolations are decreed. 27 And he will make a [q]firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will make sacrifice and grain offering cease; and on the wing of [r](R)abominations will come one who [s]makes desolate, even until a (S)complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who [t]makes desolate.”

Gabriel Brings an Answer

20 (A)While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for (B)the holy hill of my God, 21 while I was speaking in prayer, the man (C)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, (D)came to me in swift flight at (E)the time of the evening sacrifice. 22 (F)He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you (G)insight and understanding. 23 (H)At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, (I)and I have come to tell it to you, for (J)you are greatly loved. Therefore consider the word (K)and understand the vision.

The Seventy Weeks

24 (L)“Seventy weeks[a] are decreed about your people and (M)your holy city, to finish (N)the transgression, to put an end to sin, (O)and to atone for iniquity, (P)to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and (Q)to anoint a most holy place.[b] 25 (R)Know therefore and understand that (S)from the going out of the word to restore and (T)build Jerusalem to the coming of an (U)anointed one, a (V)prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again[c] with squares and moat, (W)but in a troubled time. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall (X)be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come (Y)shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. (Z)Its[d] end shall come with a flood, (AA)and to the end there shall be war. (AB)Desolations are decreed. 27 And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week,[e] and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. (AC)And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until (AD)the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”
