Daniel's Prayer for His People

(A)In the first year of (B)Darius the son of Ahasuerus, by descent a (C)Mede, who was made king over the realm of the (D)Chaldeans— in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number of years that, according to (E)the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet, must pass before the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years.

Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by (F)prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God and (G)made confession, saying, (H)“O Lord, the (I)great and awesome God, who (J)keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, (K)we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly (L)and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules. (M)We have not listened to (N)your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to (O)our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. To you, (P)O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, (Q)those who are near and (R)those who are far away, in (S)all the lands to which you have driven them, because of (T)the treachery that they have committed against you. To us, O Lord, belongs open shame, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because (U)we have sinned against you. (V)To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him 10 (W)and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by (X)his servants the prophets. 11 (Y)All Israel has transgressed your law and turned aside, (Z)refusing to obey your voice. (AA)And the curse and oath (AB)that are written in the Law of (AC)Moses the servant of God have been poured out upon us, because (AD)we have sinned against him. 12 He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against (AE)our rulers who ruled us,[a] by (AF)bringing upon us a great calamity. (AG)For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem. 13 (AH)As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, (AI)turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth. 14 (AJ)Therefore the Lord has kept ready the calamity and has brought it upon us, (AK)for the Lord our God is righteous in all the works that he has done, and (AL)we have not obeyed his voice. 15 And now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of the land of Egypt (AM)with a mighty hand, and (AN)have made a name for yourself, as at this day, (AO)we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

16 “O Lord, (AP)according to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, (AQ)your holy hill, (AR)because for our sins, and for (AS)the iniquities of our fathers, (AT)Jerusalem and your people have become (AU)a byword among all who are around us. 17 Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy, and for your own sake, O Lord,[b] (AV)make your face to shine upon (AW)your sanctuary, which is desolate. 18 (AX)O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see (AY)our desolations, and (AZ)the city that is called by your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. 19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, pay attention and act. (BA)Delay not, (BB)for your own sake, O my God, because (BC)your city and (BD)your people are called by your name.”

Gabriel Brings an Answer

20 (BE)While I was speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before the Lord my God for (BF)the holy hill of my God, 21 while I was speaking in prayer, the man (BG)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the first, (BH)came to me in swift flight at (BI)the time of the evening sacrifice. 22 (BJ)He made me understand, speaking with me and saying, “O Daniel, I have now come out to give you (BK)insight and understanding. 23 (BL)At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, (BM)and I have come to tell it to you, for (BN)you are greatly loved. Therefore consider the word (BO)and understand the vision.

The Seventy Weeks

24 (BP)“Seventy weeks[c] are decreed about your people and (BQ)your holy city, to finish (BR)the transgression, to put an end to sin, (BS)and to atone for iniquity, (BT)to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and (BU)to anoint a most holy place.[d] 25 (BV)Know therefore and understand that (BW)from the going out of the word to restore and (BX)build Jerusalem to the coming of an (BY)anointed one, a (BZ)prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again[e] with squares and moat, (CA)but in a troubled time. 26 And after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall (CB)be cut off and shall have nothing. And the people of the prince who is to come (CC)shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. (CD)Its[f] end shall come with a flood, (CE)and to the end there shall be war. (CF)Desolations are decreed. 27 And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week,[g] and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. (CG)And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until (CH)the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”

Daniel's Terrifying Vision of a Man

10 (CI)In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a word was revealed to Daniel, (CJ)who was named Belteshazzar. And (CK)the word was true, and it was a great conflict.[h] And (CL)he understood the word and (CM)had understanding of the vision.

In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for (CN)three weeks. I ate no delicacies, no meat or wine entered my mouth, nor did I (CO)anoint myself at all, for (CP)the full three weeks. On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing (CQ)on the bank of the great river ((CR)that is, the Tigris) (CS)I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, (CT)a man clothed in linen, (CU)with a belt of fine (CV)gold from Uphaz around his waist. His body was like (CW)beryl, his face (CX)like the appearance of lightning, (CY)his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and (CZ)legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and (DA)the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude. (DB)And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision, for the men who were with me did not see the vision, but a great trembling fell upon them, and they fled to hide themselves. So I was left alone and saw this great vision, and (DC)no strength was left in me. My radiant appearance was fearfully changed,[i] (DD)and I retained no strength. Then I heard the sound of his words, (DE)and as I heard the sound of his words, I fell on my face in deep sleep (DF)with my face to the ground.

10 And behold, (DG)a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11 And he said to me, “O Daniel, (DH)man greatly loved, (DI)understand the words that I speak to you, and (DJ)stand upright, for (DK)now I have been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling. 12 Then he said to me, (DL)“Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you (DM)set your heart to understand and (DN)humbled yourself before your God, (DO)your words have been heard, (DP)and I have come because of your words. 13 (DQ)The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me (DR)twenty-one days, but (DS)Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia, 14 (DT)and came to make you understand what is to happen to your people (DU)in the latter days. For (DV)the vision is for days yet to come.”

15 When he had spoken to me according to these words, (DW)I turned my face toward the ground (DX)and was mute. 16 And behold, (DY)one in the likeness of the children of man (DZ)touched my lips. Then I opened my mouth and spoke. I said to him who stood before me, “O my lord, by reason of the vision pains have come upon me, and (EA)I retain no strength. 17 How can my lord's servant talk with my lord? For now no strength remains in me, and no breath is left in me.”

18 Again (EB)one having the appearance of a man (EC)touched me and strengthened me. 19 And he said, (ED)“O man greatly loved, (EE)fear not, peace be with you; be strong and of good courage.” And as he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.” 20 Then he said, “Do you know why I have come to you? But now I will return to fight against the (EF)prince of Persia; and when I go out, behold, the prince of (EG)Greece will come. 21 But I will tell you (EH)what is inscribed in the book of truth: there is none who contends by my side against these except (EI)Michael, your prince.

The Kings of the South and the North

11 “And as for me, (EJ)in the first year of (EK)Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him.

“And now I will show you (EL)the truth. Behold, three more kings shall arise in Persia, and a fourth shall be far richer than all of them. And when he has become strong through his riches, he shall stir up all against the kingdom of Greece. Then (EM)a mighty king shall arise, who shall rule with great dominion and (EN)do as he wills. And as soon as he has arisen, (EO)his kingdom shall be broken and divided (EP)toward the (EQ)four winds of heaven, but (ER)not to his posterity, nor according to the authority with which he ruled, for his kingdom shall be plucked up and go to others besides these.

“Then the king of the south shall be strong, but one of his princes shall be stronger than he (ES)and shall rule, and his authority shall be a great authority. After some years (ET)they shall make an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement. But she shall not retain the strength of her arm, and he and his arm shall not endure, but she shall be given up, and her attendants, he who fathered her, and he who supported[j] her in those times.

“And from a branch from her roots one shall arise in his place. He shall come against the army and enter the (EU)fortress of the king of the north, and he shall deal with them and shall prevail. He shall also carry off to Egypt their gods with their metal images and their precious (EV)vessels of silver and gold, and for some years he shall refrain from attacking the king of the north. Then the latter shall come into the realm of the king of the south but shall return to his own land.

10 “His sons shall wage war and assemble a multitude of great forces, which shall keep coming (EW)and overflow and pass through, and again shall carry the war as far as his (EX)fortress. 11 Then the king of the south, (EY)moved with rage, shall come out and fight against the king of the north. (EZ)And he shall raise a great multitude, but it shall be given into his hand. 12 And when the multitude is taken away, his heart shall be exalted, and he shall cast down tens of thousands, but he shall not prevail. 13 For the king of the north shall again (FA)raise a multitude, greater than the first. And (FB)after some years[k] he shall come on with a great army and abundant supplies.

14 “In those times many shall rise against the king of the south, and the violent among your own people shall lift themselves up in order to fulfill the vision, but (FC)they shall fail. 15 Then the king of the north shall come and (FD)throw up siegeworks and take a well-fortified city. And the forces of the south shall not stand, or even his best troops, for there shall be no strength to stand. 16 But he who comes against him shall (FE)do as he wills, and (FF)none shall stand before him. And he shall stand in (FG)the glorious land, with destruction in his hand. 17 He shall (FH)set his face to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and he shall bring terms of an agreement and perform them. He shall give him the daughter of women to destroy the kingdom,[l] but it shall not stand or be to his advantage. 18 Afterward he shall turn his face to the coastlands and shall capture many of them, but a commander shall put an end to his insolence. Indeed,[m] he (FI)shall turn his insolence back upon him. 19 Then he shall turn his face back toward the (FJ)fortresses of his own land, but he shall (FK)stumble and fall, (FL)and shall not be found.

20 “Then shall arise in his place one who shall send an (FM)exactor of tribute for the glory of the kingdom. But within a few days he shall be broken, neither in anger nor in battle. 21 In his place shall arise a contemptible person to whom royal majesty has not been given. (FN)He shall come in without warning and obtain the kingdom (FO)by flatteries. 22 Armies shall be (FP)utterly swept away before him and broken, even the prince of the covenant. 23 And from the time that an alliance is made with him he shall act deceitfully, and he shall become strong with a small people. 24 (FQ)Without warning he shall come into (FR)the richest parts[n] of the province, and he shall do what neither his fathers nor his fathers' fathers have done, scattering among them plunder, spoil, and goods. He shall devise plans against strongholds, but only for a time. 25 And he shall stir up his power and his heart against (FS)the king of the south with a great army. And the king of the south shall wage war with an exceedingly great and mighty army, but he shall not stand, for plots shall be devised against him. 26 Even those who eat his food shall break him. His army shall be (FT)swept away, and many shall fall down slain. 27 And as for the two kings, their hearts shall be bent on doing evil. They shall speak lies at the same table, but to no avail, for (FU)the end is yet to be at the time appointed. 28 And he shall return to his land with great wealth, but his heart shall be set against the holy covenant. And he shall work his will and return to his own land.

29 “At the time appointed he shall return and come into the south, but it shall not be this time as it was before. 30 For ships of (FV)Kittim shall come against him, and he shall be afraid and withdraw, and shall turn back and (FW)be enraged and (FX)take action against the holy covenant. He shall turn back and pay attention to those who forsake the holy covenant. 31 Forces from him shall appear and (FY)profane the temple and fortress, and shall take away the regular burnt offering. And (FZ)they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate. 32 He shall seduce with flattery those who violate the covenant, but the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action. 33 (GA)And the wise among the people shall make many understand, though for some days they shall stumble by sword and flame, by captivity and plunder. 34 When they stumble, they shall receive a little help. And many shall join themselves to them with flattery, 35 and some of the wise shall stumble, so that they may be refined, (GB)purified, and (GC)made white, until (GD)the time of the end, (GE)for it still awaits the appointed time.

36 “And the king shall (GF)do as he wills. (GG)He shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, (GH)and shall speak astonishing things against (GI)the God of gods. (GJ)He shall prosper (GK)till the indignation is accomplished; for what is decreed shall be done. 37 He shall pay no attention to the gods of his fathers, or to the one beloved by women. He shall not pay attention to any other god, for (GL)he shall magnify himself above all. 38 He shall honor the god of fortresses instead of these. A god whom his fathers did not know he shall honor (GM)with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts. 39 He shall deal with the strongest fortresses with the help of a foreign god. Those who acknowledge him he shall load with honor. He shall make them rulers over many and (GN)shall divide the land for a price.[o]

40 (GO)“At the time of the end, the king of the south shall attack[p] him, but the king of the north shall rush upon him (GP)like a whirlwind, with chariots and horsemen, and with many ships. And he shall come into countries and (GQ)shall overflow and pass through. 41 He shall come into (GR)the glorious land. And tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: (GS)Edom and (GT)Moab and the main part of the (GU)Ammonites. 42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 43 He shall become ruler of the treasures of gold and of silver, and all the precious things of Egypt, and the (GV)Libyans and the (GW)Cushites shall follow in his train. 44 But news from the east and the north shall alarm him, and he shall go out with great fury to destroy and devote many to destruction. 45 And he shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the glorious holy mountain. Yet he shall come to his end, with none to help him.

The Time of the End

12 “At that time shall arise (GX)Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And (GY)there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, (GZ)everyone whose name shall be found written in the book. And many of those who (HA)sleep in (HB)the dust of the earth shall (HC)awake, (HD)some to everlasting life, and (HE)some to shame and everlasting contempt. (HF)And those who are wise (HG)shall shine like the brightness of the sky above;[q] and (HH)those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. But you, Daniel, (HI)shut up the words and (HJ)seal the book, until (HK)the time of the end. (HL)Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”

Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others stood, one on (HM)this bank of the stream and one on that bank of the stream. And someone said to (HN)the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream,[r] (HO)“How long shall it be till the end of these wonders?” And I heard (HP)the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream; (HQ)he raised his right hand and his left hand toward heaven and (HR)swore by him who lives forever that it would be for a (HS)time, times, and half a time, and that when the shattering of (HT)the power of (HU)the holy people comes to an end all these things would be finished. I heard, (HV)but I did not understand. Then I said, “O my lord, what shall be the outcome of these things?” He said, (HW)“Go your way, Daniel, (HX)for the words are shut up and sealed until the time of the end. 10 (HY)Many shall purify themselves and make themselves white and be refined, but (HZ)the wicked shall act wickedly. And none of the wicked shall understand, (IA)but those who are wise shall understand. 11 And from the time that (IB)the regular burnt offering is taken away and (IC)the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days. 12 (ID)Blessed is he who waits and arrives at the 1,335 days. 13 (IE)But go your way till the end. (IF)And you shall rest and shall stand in your allotted place at (IG)the end of the days.”

The word of the Lord that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, (IH)in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of (II)Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

Hosea's Wife and Children

When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, (IJ)“Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have (IK)children of whoredom, for (IL)the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.” So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

And the Lord said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while (IM)I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and (IN)I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. And on that day (IO)I will break the bow of Israel (IP)in the Valley of Jezreel.”

She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the Lord said to him, (IQ)“Call her name No Mercy,[s] for (IR)I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all. But (IS)I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I (IT)will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.”

When she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son. And the Lord said, (IU)“Call his name Not My People,[t] for (IV)you are not my people, and I am not your God.”[u]

10 [v] Yet (IW)the number of the children of Israel shall be (IX)like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. (IY)And (IZ)in the place where it was said to them, (JA)“You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, (JB)“Children[w] of (JC)the living God.” 11 And (JD)the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and (JE)they shall appoint for themselves one head. And they shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

Israel's Unfaithfulness Punished

[x] Say to your brothers, (JF)“You are my people,”[y] and to your sisters, (JG)“You have received mercy.”[z]

“Plead with your mother, plead—
    for (JH)she is not my wife,
    and I am not her husband—
that she put away (JI)her whoring from her face,
    and her adultery from between her breasts;
lest (JJ)I strip her naked
    and make her as (JK)in the day she was born,
and (JL)make her like a wilderness,
    and make her like a parched land,
    and kill her with thirst.
(JM)Upon her children also I will have no mercy,
    (JN)because they are children of whoredom.
For (JO)their mother has played the whore;
    she who conceived them has acted shamefully.
For (JP)she said, ‘I will go after my lovers,
    who (JQ)give me my bread and my water,
    my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’
Therefore (JR)I will hedge up her[aa] way with thorns,
    and (JS)I will build a wall against her,
    so that she cannot find her paths.
She shall pursue her lovers
    but not overtake them,
and she shall seek them
    but shall not find them.
(JT)Then she shall say,
    ‘I will go and return to (JU)my first husband,
    (JV)for it was better for me then than now.’
And (JW)she did not know
    that it was (JX)I who gave her
    (JY)the grain, the wine, and the oil,
and who lavished on (JZ)her silver and gold,
    (KA)which they used for Baal.
Therefore (KB)I will take back
    my grain in its time,
    and my wine in its season,
and (KC)I will take away my wool and my flax,
    which were to cover her nakedness.
10 Now (KD)I will uncover her lewdness
    in the sight of her lovers,
    and no one shall rescue her out of my hand.
11 (KE)And I will put an end to all her mirth,
    her feasts, her (KF)new moons, her (KG)Sabbaths,
    and all her (KH)appointed feasts.
12 And (KI)I will lay waste her vines and her fig trees,
    (KJ)of which she said,
‘These are (KK)my wages,
    which my lovers have given me.’
I will make them a forest,
    (KL)and the beasts of the field shall devour them.
13 And (KM)I will punish her for (KN)the feast days of the Baals
    when she burned offerings to them
and (KO)adorned herself with her ring and jewelry,
    and went after her lovers
    and forgot me, declares the Lord.

The Lord's Mercy on Israel

14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her,
    and (KP)bring her into the wilderness,
    and (KQ)speak tenderly to her.
15 And there I will give her her vineyards
    and make the Valley of Achor[ab] a door of hope.
And there she shall answer (KR)as in the days of her youth,
    as at the time when she came out of the land of Egypt.

16 “And (KS)in that day, declares the Lord, you will call me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer will you call me ‘My Baal.’ 17 For (KT)I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be remembered by name no more. 18 And (KU)I will make for them a covenant on that day with the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the ground. And (KV)I will abolish[ac] the bow, the sword, and war from the land, and I will make you lie down in (KW)safety. 19 And I will betroth you to me (KX)forever. (KY)I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. 20 (KZ)I will betroth you to me in faithfulness. And (LA)you shall know the Lord.

21 “And (LB)in that day (LC)I will answer, declares the Lord,
    I will answer the heavens,
    and they shall answer the earth,
22 and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil,
    and they shall answer (LD)Jezreel,[ad]
23     and (LE)I will sow her for myself in the land.
And (LF)I (LG)will have mercy on No Mercy,[ae]
    and (LH)I will say to Not My People,[af] (LI)‘You are my people’;
    and he shall say, ‘You are my God.’”

Hosea Redeems His Wife

And the Lord said to me, (LJ)“Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, even as the Lord loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.” So I bought her for fifteen shekels of silver and a (LK)homer and a lethech[ag] of barley. And I said to her, “You must (LL)dwell as mine for many days. You shall not play the whore, or belong to another man; so will I also be to you.” For the children of Israel (LM)shall dwell many days (LN)without king or prince, (LO)without sacrifice or (LP)pillar, without (LQ)ephod or (LR)household gods. Afterward (LS)the children of Israel shall return and (LT)seek the Lord their God, and (LU)David their king, (LV)and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to his goodness in the (LW)latter days.

The Lord Accuses Israel

(LX)Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel,
    for (LY)the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land.
There is no faithfulness or steadfast love,
    and (LZ)no knowledge of God in the land;
(MA)there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;
    they break all bounds, and (MB)bloodshed follows bloodshed.
Therefore (MC)the land mourns,
    and all who dwell in it languish,
(MD)and also the beasts of the field
    and the birds of the heavens,
    (ME)and even the fish of the sea are taken away.

(MF)Yet let no one contend,
    and let none accuse,
    for with you is (MG)my contention, O priest.[ah]
You shall stumble by day;
    the prophet also shall stumble with you by night;
    and I will destroy (MH)your mother.
My people are destroyed (MI)for lack of knowledge;
    (MJ)because you have rejected knowledge,
    I reject you (MK)from being a priest to me.
And since you have forgotten the law of your God,
    (ML)I also will forget your children.

(MM)The more they increased,
    the more they sinned against me;
    (MN)I will change their glory into shame.
(MO)They feed on the sin[ai] of my people;
    they are greedy for their iniquity.
(MP)And it shall be like people, like priest;
    I will punish them for their ways
    and repay them for their deeds.
10 (MQ)They shall eat, but not be satisfied;
    they shall play the whore, but not multiply,
because they have forsaken the Lord
    to cherish 11 whoredom, wine, and new wine,
    which (MR)take away the understanding.
12 My people (MS)inquire of a piece of wood,
    and their walking staff gives them oracles.
For (MT)a spirit of whoredom has led them astray,
    and they have left their God to play the whore.
13 (MU)They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains
    and burn offerings on the hills,
(MV)under oak, poplar, and terebinth,
    because their shade is good.
Therefore your daughters play the whore,
    and your brides commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore,
    nor your brides when they commit adultery;
for (MW)the men themselves go aside with prostitutes
    and sacrifice with (MX)cult prostitutes,
and a people (MY)without understanding shall come to ruin.

15 Though you play the whore, O (MZ)Israel,
    let not (NA)Judah become guilty.
(NB)Enter not into (NC)Gilgal,
    nor go up to (ND)Beth-aven,
    and swear not, “As the Lord lives.”
16 Like a stubborn heifer,
    Israel is stubborn;
can the Lord now feed them
    like a lamb in a broad pasture?

17 (NE)Ephraim is joined to idols;
    (NF)leave him alone.
18 When their drink is gone, they give themselves to whoring;
    (NG)their rulers[aj] dearly love shame.
19 (NH)A wind has wrapped them[ak] in its wings,
    and they shall (NI)be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Punishment Coming for Israel and Judah

(NJ)Hear this, O priests!
    Pay attention, O house of Israel!
Give ear, O house of the king!
    For the judgment is for you;
for (NK)you have been a snare at Mizpah
    and a net spread upon (NL)Tabor.
And (NM)the revolters (NN)have gone deep into slaughter,
    but (NO)I will discipline all of them.

(NP)I know Ephraim,
    and Israel is not hidden from me;
for now, O Ephraim, you have played the whore;
    Israel is defiled.
(NQ)Their deeds do not permit them
    to return to their God.
For (NR)the spirit of whoredom is within them,
    and they know not the Lord.

(NS)The pride of Israel testifies to his face;[al]
    Israel and (NT)Ephraim shall stumble in his guilt;
    (NU)Judah also shall stumble with them.
(NV)With their flocks and herds they shall go
    to seek the Lord,
(NW)but they will not find him;
    (NX)he has withdrawn from them.
(NY)They have dealt faithlessly with the Lord;
    for they have borne alien children.
    Now the new moon shall devour them with their fields.

(NZ)Blow the horn in (OA)Gibeah,
    the trumpet in (OB)Ramah.
Sound the alarm at (OC)Beth-aven;
    we follow you,[am] O Benjamin!
Ephraim shall become a desolation
    in the day of punishment;
among the tribes of Israel
    I make known what is sure.
10 The princes of Judah have become
    like (OD)those who move the landmark;
upon them I will pour out
    my wrath like water.
11 Ephraim is (OE)oppressed, crushed in judgment,
    because he was determined to go after filth.[an]
12 But I am (OF)like a moth to Ephraim,
    and (OG)like dry rot to the house of Judah.

13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
    and Judah (OH)his wound,
then Ephraim went (OI)to Assyria,
    and sent to the great king.[ao]
(OJ)But he is not able to cure you
    or heal (OK)your wound.
14 For I will be (OL)like a lion to (OM)Ephraim,
    and like a young lion to the house of (ON)Judah.
(OO)I, even I, will tear and go away;
    I will carry off, and no one shall rescue.

15 (OP)I will return again to my place,
    until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face,
    and (OQ)in their distress earnestly seek me.

Israel and Judah Are Unrepentant

“Come, let us (OR)return to the Lord;
    for (OS)he has torn us, that he may heal us;
    he has struck us down, and (OT)he will bind us up.
After two days (OU)he will revive us;
    on the third day he will raise us up,
    that we may live before him.
(OV)Let us know; (OW)let us press on to know the Lord;
    (OX)his going out is sure as the dawn;
he will come to us (OY)as the showers,
    (OZ)as the spring rains that water the earth.”

What shall I do with you, (PA)O (PB)Ephraim?
    What shall I do with you, O (PC)Judah?
Your love is (PD)like a morning cloud,
    (PE)like the dew that goes early away.
Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets;
    I have slain them (PF)by the words of my mouth,
    and my judgment goes forth as the light.
For (PG)I desire steadfast love[ap] and not sacrifice,
    (PH)the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

But (PI)like Adam they (PJ)transgressed the covenant;
    (PK)there they dealt faithlessly with me.
(PL)Gilead is a city of evildoers,
    (PM)tracked with blood.
As robbers (PN)lie in wait for a man,
    so the priests band together;
they murder on the way to (PO)Shechem;
    they commit villainy.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing;
    (PP)Ephraim's whoredom is there; (PQ)Israel is defiled.

11 For you also, O (PR)Judah, (PS)a harvest is appointed.

When (PT)I restore the fortunes of my people,
(PU)when I would heal Israel,
    the iniquity of Ephraim is revealed,
    and the evil deeds of (PV)Samaria,
for (PW)they deal falsely;
    the thief breaks in,
    and the bandits raid outside.
But they do not consider
    that (PX)I remember all their evil.
Now (PY)their deeds surround them;
    (PZ)they are before my face.
By their evil (QA)they make (QB)the king glad,
    and the princes by their treachery.
(QC)They are all adulterers;
    they are like a heated oven
whose baker ceases to stir the fire,
    from the kneading of the dough
    until it is leavened.
On the day of (QD)our king, the princes
    became sick with the heat of wine;
    he stretched out his hand with mockers.
For with hearts like an oven (QE)they approach their intrigue;
    all night their anger smolders;
    in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
All of them are hot as an oven,
    and they devour their rulers.
All (QF)their kings (QG)have fallen,
    and none of them calls upon me.

Ephraim (QH)mixes himself with the peoples;
    Ephraim is a cake not turned.
(QI)Strangers devour his strength,
    and (QJ)he knows it not;
gray hairs are sprinkled upon him,
    and (QK)he knows it not.
10 (QL)The pride of Israel testifies to his face;[aq]
    (QM)yet they do not return to the Lord their God,
    nor seek him, for all this.

11 Ephraim is like a dove,
    (QN)silly and without sense,
    calling to (QO)Egypt, going to (QP)Assyria.
12 As they go, (QQ)I will spread over them my net;
    I will bring them down like birds of the heavens;
    (QR)I will discipline them (QS)according to the report made to their congregation.
13 (QT)Woe to them, for they have strayed from me!
    Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me!
(QU)I would redeem them,
    but (QV)they speak lies against me.

14 (QW)They do not cry to me from the heart,
    but (QX)they wail upon their beds;
for grain and wine they gash themselves;
    they rebel against me.
15 Although (QY)I trained and strengthened their arms,
    yet they devise evil against me.
16 They (QZ)return, but not upward;[ar]
    they are (RA)like a treacherous bow;
their princes shall fall by the sword
    because of (RB)the insolence of their tongue.
This shall be their derision (RC)in the land of Egypt.

Israel Will Reap the Whirlwind

Set (RD)the trumpet to your lips!
    One (RE)like a vulture is over the house of the Lord,
because (RF)they have transgressed my covenant
    and rebelled against my law.
To me they cry,
    (RG)“My God, we—Israel—know you.”
Israel has spurned the good;
    the enemy shall pursue him.

(RH)They made kings, (RI)but not through me.
    They set up princes, but I knew it not.
With their silver and gold they made idols
    for their own destruction.
(RJ)I have[as] spurned your calf, O Samaria.
    My anger burns against them.
(RK)How long will they be incapable of innocence?
For it is from Israel;
a craftsman made it;
    it is not God.
(RL)The calf of Samaria
    (RM)shall be broken to pieces.[at]

For (RN)they sow the wind,
    and they shall reap the whirlwind.
The standing grain has no heads;
    it shall yield no flour;
if it were to yield,
    (RO)strangers would devour it.
(RP)Israel is swallowed up;
    already they are among the nations
    as (RQ)a useless vessel.
For (RR)they have gone up to Assyria,
    (RS)a wild donkey wandering alone;
    Ephraim has hired lovers.
10 Though they hire allies among the nations,
    I will soon gather them up.
And (RT)the king and princes (RU)shall soon writhe
    because of the tribute.

11 Because Ephraim (RV)has multiplied altars for sinning,
    they have become to him altars for sinning.
12 (RW)Were I to write for him my laws by the ten thousands,
    they would be regarded as a strange thing.
13 As for my sacrificial offerings,
    (RX)they sacrifice meat and eat it,
    but the Lord does not accept them.
(RY)Now he will remember their iniquity
    and punish their sins;
    (RZ)they shall return to Egypt.
14 For (SA)Israel has forgotten (SB)his Maker
    and (SC)built palaces,
and (SD)Judah has multiplied fortified cities;
    so (SE)I will send a fire upon his cities,
    and it shall devour her strongholds.

The Lord Will Punish Israel

Rejoice not, O Israel!
    Exult not like the peoples;
(SF)for you have played the whore, forsaking your God.
    (SG)You have loved a prostitute's wages
    on all threshing floors.
(SH)Threshing floor and wine vat shall not feed them,
    and (SI)the new wine shall fail them.
They shall not remain in (SJ)the land of the Lord,
    but (SK)Ephraim shall return to Egypt,
    and (SL)they shall eat unclean food in Assyria.

(SM)They shall not pour drink offerings of wine to the Lord,
    (SN)and their sacrifices shall not please him.
It shall be like (SO)mourners' bread to them;
    all who eat of it shall be defiled;
for their bread shall be for their hunger only;
    (SP)it shall not come to the house of the Lord.

(SQ)What will you do on the day of the appointed festival,
    and on the day of the feast of the Lord?
For behold, they are going away from destruction;
    but (SR)Egypt shall gather them;
    Memphis shall bury them.
Nettles shall possess (SS)their precious things of silver;
    (ST)thorns shall be in their tents.

(SU)The days of punishment have come;
    the days of recompense have come;
    Israel shall know it.
(SV)The prophet is a fool;
    the man of the spirit is mad,
because of your great iniquity
    and great hatred.
The prophet is (SW)the watchman of Ephraim with my God;
yet (SX)a fowler's snare is on all his ways,
    and hatred in the house of his God.
(SY)They have deeply corrupted themselves
    as (SZ)in the days of Gibeah:
(TA)he will remember their iniquity;
    he will punish their sins.

10 Like grapes in the wilderness,
    (TB)I found Israel.
Like the first fruit on the fig tree
    in its first season,
    I saw your fathers.
But (TC)they came to Baal-peor
    and (TD)consecrated themselves to the thing of shame,
    and (TE)became detestable like the thing they loved.
11 Ephraim's (TF)glory shall fly away like a bird—
    (TG)no birth, no pregnancy, no conception!
12 (TH)Even if they bring up children,
    I will bereave them till none is left.
(TI)Woe to them
    when (TJ)I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, (TK)as I have seen, was like a young palm[au] planted in a meadow;
    but (TL)Ephraim must lead his children out to slaughter.[av]
14 Give them, O Lord
    what will you give?
Give them (TM)a miscarrying womb
    and dry breasts.

15 Every evil of theirs is in (TN)Gilgal;
    there I began to hate them.
Because of the wickedness of their deeds
    I will drive them out of my house.
I will love them no more;
    all (TO)their princes are (TP)rebels.

16 Ephraim is stricken;
    (TQ)their root is dried up;
    they shall bear no fruit.
Even (TR)though they give birth,
    (TS)I will put their beloved children to death.
17 (TT)My God will reject them
    because they have not listened to him;
    (TU)they shall be wanderers among the nations.

10 (TV)Israel is a luxuriant vine
    that yields its fruit.
The more his fruit increased,
    (TW)the more altars he built;
as his country improved,
    he improved his pillars.
Their heart is false;
    now they must bear their guilt.
The Lord[aw] will break down their altars
    and destroy their pillars.

For now they will say:
    (TX)“We have no king,
for we do not fear the Lord;
    and a king—what could he do for us?”
They utter (TY)mere words;
    with empty[ax] oaths they make covenants;
so (TZ)judgment springs up like poisonous weeds
    (UA)in the furrows of the field.
The inhabitants of Samaria tremble
    for (UB)the calf[ay] of (UC)Beth-aven.
Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests—
    those who rejoiced over it and (UD)over its glory—
    for it has departed[az] from them.
(UE)The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria
    as tribute to (UF)the great king.[ba]
Ephraim shall be put to shame,
    and Israel shall be ashamed (UG)of his idol.[bb]

(UH)Samaria's king shall perish
    like a twig on the face of the waters.
The high places of (UI)Aven, (UJ)the sin of Israel,
    shall be destroyed.
(UK)Thorn and thistle shall grow up
    on their altars,
and (UL)they shall say to the mountains, “Cover us,”
    and to the hills, “Fall on us.”

From (UM)the days of Gibeah, you have sinned, O Israel;
    there they have continued.
    Shall not the war against the unjust[bc] overtake them in Gibeah?
10 (UN)When I please, (UO)I will discipline them,
    and nations shall be gathered against them
    when they are bound up for (UP)their double iniquity.

11 Ephraim was a trained calf
    that (UQ)loved to thresh,
    and I spared her fair neck;
but I will put (UR)Ephraim to the yoke;
    (US)Judah must plow;
    Jacob must harrow for himself.
12 (UT)Sow for yourselves righteousness;
    reap steadfast love;
    (UU)break up your fallow ground,
for it is the time to seek the Lord,
    that he may come and (UV)rain righteousness upon you.

13 (UW)You have plowed iniquity;
    you have reaped injustice;
    you have eaten the fruit of lies.
Because you have trusted in your own way
    and in the multitude of your warriors,

Daniel’s Prayer for His People

In the first year of (A)Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of Median descent, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans— in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the Lord to (B)Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, (C)seventy years. So I gave my [a]attention to the Lord God, to seek Him by prayer and pleading, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed, and said, “Oh, Lord, the (D)great and awesome God, who (E)keeps His covenant and faithfulness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, (F)we have sinned, we have done wrong, and [b]acted wickedly and (G)rebelled, even (H)turning aside from Your commandments and ordinances. Moreover, we have not (I)listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, our leaders, our fathers, and all the people of the land.

(J)Righteousness belongs to You, Lord, but to us [c](K)open shame, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and all Israel, those who are nearby and those who are far away in (L)all the countries to which You have driven them, because of their unfaithful deeds which they have committed against You. [d]Open shame belongs to us, Lord, to our kings, our leaders, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our God belong (M)compassion and forgiveness, [e]because we have (N)rebelled against Him; 10 and we have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His [f]teachings which He (O)set before us through His servants the prophets. 11 Indeed, (P)all Israel has violated Your Law and turned aside, not obeying Your voice; so the (Q)curse has gushed forth on us, along with the oath which is written in the Law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against Him. 12 So He has (R)confirmed His words which He had spoken against us and against our [g](S)rulers who ruled us, to bring on us great disaster; for under the entire heaven there has (T)not been done anything like what was done in Jerusalem. 13 Just as it is written in the (U)Law of Moses, all this disaster has come on us; yet we have (V)not [h]sought the favor of the Lord our God by (W)turning from our wrongdoing and [i]giving attention to Your truth. 14 So the Lord has [j](X)kept the disaster in store and brought it on us; for the Lord our God is (Y)righteous with respect to all His deeds which He has done, but we have not obeyed His voice.

15 “And now, Lord, our God, You who (Z)brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and (AA)made a name for Yourself, as it is this day—we have sinned, we have been wicked. 16 Lord, in accordance with all Your [k]righteous acts, let now Your (AB)anger and Your wrath turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your (AC)holy mountain; for because of our sins and the wrongdoings of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people have become an (AD)object of taunting to all those around us. 17 So now, our God, listen to the prayer of Your servant and to his pleas, and for [l]Your sake, Lord, (AE)let Your face shine on Your (AF)desolate sanctuary. 18 My God, (AG)incline Your ear and hear! Open Your eyes and (AH)see our desolations and the city which is (AI)called by Your name; for we are not [m](AJ)presenting our pleas before You based on [n]any merits of our own, but based on Your great compassion. 19 Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and take action! For Your own sake, my God, (AK)do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”

Gabriel Brings an Answer

20 While I was still (AL)speaking and praying, and (AM)confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and [o]presenting my plea before the Lord my God in behalf of the holy mountain of my God, 21 while I was still speaking in prayer, the man (AN)Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision [p]previously, [q]came to me [r]in my extreme weariness about the time of the (AO)evening offering. 22 And he instructed me and talked with me and said, “Daniel, I have come now to give you insight with (AP)understanding. 23 At the (AQ)beginning of your pleas the [s]command was issued, and I have come to tell you, because you are [t](AR)highly esteemed; so pay attention to the message and gain (AS)understanding of the vision.

Seventy Weeks and the Messiah

24 “Seventy [u](AT)weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to [v]finish the wrongdoing, to [w]make an end of sin, to (AU)make atonement for guilt, to bring in (AV)everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and [x]prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place. 25 So you are to know and understand that from the issuing of a [y](AW)decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem, until [z](AX)Messiah the (AY)Prince, there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with [aa]streets and moat, even in times of distress. 26 Then after the sixty-two weeks, the [ab]Messiah will be (AZ)cut off and have [ac]nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will (BA)destroy the city and the sanctuary. And [ad]its end will come with a (BB)flood; even to the end [ae]there will be war; desolations are determined. 27 And he will confirm a covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of [af](BC)abominations will come the one who [ag]makes desolate, until a (BD)complete destruction, one that is [ah]decreed, gushes forth on the one who [ai]makes desolate.”

Daniel Is Terrified by a Vision

10 In the third year of (BE)Cyrus king of Persia, a [aj]message was revealed to (BF)Daniel, who was named Belteshazzar; and the [ak](BG)message was true and it concerned great [al]conflict, but he understood the [am]message and had an (BH)understanding of the vision.

In those days, I, Daniel, had been (BI)mourning for three [an]entire weeks. I (BJ)did not eat any [ao]tasty food, nor did meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at all until the entire three weeks were completed. On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, while I was by the bank of the great (BK)river, that is, the [ap]Tigris, I raised my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a man (BL)dressed in linen, whose waist (BM)had a belt of pure (BN)gold of Uphaz. His body also was like topaz, his face [aq]had the appearance of lightning, (BO)his eyes were like flaming torches, his arms and feet like the gleam of polished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude. Now I, Daniel, (BP)alone saw the vision, while the (BQ)men who were with me did not see the vision; nevertheless, a great (BR)fear fell on them, and they ran away to hide themselves. So I was (BS)left alone and saw this great vision; yet (BT)no strength was left in me, for my complexion turned to [ar]a deathly pallor, and I retained no strength. But I heard the sound of his words; and as soon as I heard the sound of his words, I (BU)fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face to the ground.

Daniel Comforted

10 Then behold, a hand (BV)touched me and shook me on my [as]hands and knees. 11 And he said to me, “(BW)Daniel, [at]you who are treasured, (BX)understand the words that I am about to tell you and (BY)stand at your place, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up (BZ)trembling. 12 Then he said to me, “(CA)Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on (CB)humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come (CC)in response to your words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was standing [au]in my way for twenty-one days; then behold, (CD)Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. 14 Now I have come to (CE)explain to you what will happen to your people in the [av](CF)latter days, because the vision pertains to (CG)the days still future.”

15 When he had spoken to me according to these words, I [aw]turned my face toward the ground and became (CH)speechless. 16 And behold, [ax](CI)one who resembled a human was (CJ)touching my lips. Then I opened my mouth and spoke and said to him who was standing before me, “My lord, due to the vision [ay](CK)anguish has come upon me, and I have retained no strength. 17 For (CL)how can such a servant of my lord talk with such as my lord? As for me, there remains just now (CM)no strength in me, nor has any breath been left in me.”

18 Then this one with human appearance touched me again and (CN)strengthened me. 19 And he said, “[az]You who are treasured, (CO)do not be afraid. Peace be to you; take (CP)courage and be courageous!” Now as soon as he spoke to me, I felt strengthened and said, “May my lord speak, for you have (CQ)strengthened me.” 20 Then he said, “Do you [ba]understand why I came to you? But I shall now return to fight against the prince of Persia; so I am leaving, and behold, the (CR)prince of [bb]Greece is about to come. 21 However, I will tell you what is recorded in the writing of (CS)truth. Yet there is no one who [bc]stands firmly with me against these forces except (CT)Michael your prince.

Conflicts to Come

11 “In the (CU)first year of Darius the Mede, [bd]I arose to be of [be]assistance and a protection for him. And now I will tell you the (CV)truth. Behold, three more kings are going to arise [bf]in Persia. Then a fourth will gain far more riches than all of them; as soon as he becomes strong through his riches, [bg]he will stir up the entire empire against the realm of [bh](CW)Greece. And a (CX)mighty king will arise, and he will rule with great authority and (CY)do as he pleases. But as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom will be broken up and parceled out (CZ)toward the (DA)four [bi]points of the compass, though not to his own descendants, nor according to his authority which he wielded, because his sovereignty will be (DB)removed and given to others besides [bj]them.

“Then the (DC)king of the South will grow strong, [bk]along with one of his princes [bl]who will gain ascendancy over him and rule; his domain will be a great realm indeed. And after some years they will form an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the South will come to the (DD)king of the North to reach an agreement. But she will not keep her [bm]position of power, nor will he remain with his [bn]power, but she will be given up, along with those who brought her in and the one who fathered her as well as he who supported her in those times. But one of the [bo]descendants of her line will arise in his place, and he will come against their army and enter the (DE)fortress of the king of the North, and he will deal with them and prevail. And he will also take into captivity to Egypt their (DF)gods with their cast metal images and their precious vessels of silver and gold, and he on his part will [bp]refrain from attacking the king of the North for some years. Then [bq]the latter will enter the realm of the king of the South, but will return to his own land.

10 “And his sons will mobilize and assemble a multitude of great forces; and one of them will keep on coming and (DG)overflow and pass through, so that he may [br]again wage war up to his fortress. 11 And the (DH)king of the South will be enraged and go out and fight [bs]with the king of the North. Then the latter will raise a great multitude, but that multitude will be handed over to [bt]the former. 12 When the multitude is carried away, his heart will [bu]be haughty, and he will cause tens of thousands to fall; yet he will not prevail. 13 For the king of the North will again raise a greater multitude than the former, and [bv]after an (DI)interval of some years he will [bw]press on with a great army and much equipment.

14 “Now in those times many will rise up against the king of the South; the violent ones among your people will also raise themselves up to fulfill the vision, but they will [bx]fall down. 15 Then the king of the North will come, pile up an (DJ)assault ramp, and capture a well-fortified city; and the forces of the South will not stand their ground, not even [by]their choicest troops, for there will be no strength to make a stand. 16 But he who comes against him will (DK)do as he pleases, and (DL)no one will be able to withstand him; he will also stay for a time in the [bz](DM)Beautiful Land, with destruction in his hand. 17 And he will (DN)set his [ca]mind on coming with the power of his entire kingdom, [cb]bringing with him [cc]a proposal of peace which he will put into effect; he will also give him the daughter of women to ruin it. But she will not take a stand for him or be [cd]on his side. 18 Then he will turn his face to the (DO)coastlands and capture many. But a commander will put a stop to his taunting against him; moreover, he will (DP)repay him for his taunting. 19 So he will turn his face toward the fortresses of his own land, but he will (DQ)stumble and fall and not be (DR)found.

20 “Then in his place one will arise who will (DS)allow an [ce]oppressor to pass through the [cf]Jewel of his kingdom; yet within a few days he will be broken, though not in anger nor in battle. 21 And in his place a despicable person will arise, on whom the majesty of kingship has not been conferred; but he will come in a time of tranquility and (DT)seize the kingdom by intrigue. 22 And the overflowing (DU)forces will be flooded away from him and smashed, and also the prince of the covenant. 23 After an alliance is made with him he will practice deception, and he will go up and gain power with a small force of people. 24 [cg]In a time of tranquility he will enter the (DV)richest parts of the [ch]realm, and he will accomplish what his fathers did not, nor his [ci]ancestors; he will distribute plunder, spoils, and possessions among them, and he will devise his schemes against strongholds, but only for a time. 25 And he will stir up his strength and [cj]courage against the (DW)king of the South with a large army; so the king of the South will mobilize an extremely large and mighty army for war; but he will not stand, because schemes will be devised against him. 26 Those who eat his choice food will [ck]destroy him, and his army will [cl](DX)overflow, but many will fall down slain. 27 As for both kings, their hearts will be intent on (DY)evil, and they will (DZ)speak lies to each other at the same table; but it will not succeed, because the (EA)end is still to come at the appointed time. 28 Then he will return to his land with much [cm]plunder; but his heart will be set against the holy covenant, and he will take action and then return to his own land.

29 “At the appointed time he will return and come into the South, but [cn]this last time it will not turn out the way it did before. 30 For ships of [co](EB)Kittim will come against him; therefore he will withdraw in fear and will return and curse the holy covenant and take action; so he will come back and pay attention to those who abandon the holy covenant. 31 Forces from him will arise, (EC)desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the (ED)abomination [cp]of desolation. 32 And by (EE)smooth words he will [cq]turn to godlessness those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will be (EF)strong and take action. 33 And [cr](EG)those who have insight among the people will give understanding to the many; yet they will (EH)fall by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder for many days. 34 Now when they fall they will be granted a little help, and many will (EI)join with them in (EJ)hypocrisy. 35 And some of [cs]those who have insight will fall, to (EK)refine, (EL)purge, and [ct](EM)cleanse them until the (EN)end time; because it is still to come at the appointed time.

36 “Then the king will (EO)do as he pleases, and he will exalt himself and (EP)boast against every god and will (EQ)speak [cu]dreadful things against the (ER)God of gods; and he will be successful until the (ES)indignation is finished, because that which is (ET)determined will be done. 37 And he will show no regard for the [cv]gods of his fathers or for the [cw]desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god; for he will boast against them all. 38 But [cx]instead he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know; he will honor him with gold, silver, precious stones, and treasures. 39 And he will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god; he will give great honor to [cy]those who acknowledge him and will make them rulers over the many, and will parcel out land for a price.

40 “And at the (EU)end time the (EV)king of the South will wage war with him, and the (EW)king of the North will (EX)storm against him with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he will enter countries, (EY)overflow them, and pass through. 41 He will also enter the [cz](EZ)Beautiful Land, and many countries will fall; but these will be rescued out of his hand: Edom, (FA)Moab, and the foremost of the sons of (FB)Ammon. 42 Then he will reach out with his hand against other countries, and the land of Egypt will not escape. 43 But he will [da]gain control over the hidden treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; and (FC)Libyans and (FD)Ethiopians will follow at his [db]heels. 44 But rumors from the East and from the North will terrify him, and he will go out with great wrath to eliminate and [dc]annihilate many. 45 And he will pitch the tents of his royal pavilion between the seas and the beautiful (FE)Holy Mountain; yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

The Time of the End

12 “Now at that time (FF)Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a (FG)time of distress (FH)such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the (FI)book, will be rescued. And (FJ)many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake, (FK)these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting [dd]contempt. And [de]those who have (FL)insight will (FM)shine like the glow of the [df]expanse of heaven, and those who [dg](FN)lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. But as for you, Daniel, (FO)keep these words secret and (FP)seal up the book until the (FQ)end of time; (FR)many will roam about, and knowledge will increase.”

Then I, Daniel, looked, and behold, two others were standing, one on this bank of the stream and the other on that bank of the stream. And (FS)someone said to the man (FT)dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, “(FU)How long will it be until the end of these wonders?” And I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the stream, [dh]as he (FV)raised his right hand and his left toward heaven, and swore by (FW)Him who lives forever that it would be for a [di](FX)time, [dj]times, and half a [dk]time; and as soon as [dl]they finish (FY)smashing the [dm]power of the holy people, all these events will be completed. But as for me, I heard but did not understand; so I said, “My lord, what will be the [dn]outcome of these events?” And he said, “Go your way, Daniel, for these words will be kept secret and (FZ)sealed up until the end time. 10 (GA)Many will be purged, [do]cleansed, and refined, but the (GB)wicked will act wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but [dp]those who (GC)have insight will understand. 11 And from the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the (GD)abomination [dq]of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. 12 (GE)Blessed is the one who is patient and attains to the (GF)1,335 days! 13 But as for you, go your way to the [dr]end; then you will (GG)rest and [ds]rise for your (GH)allotted portion at the end of the [dt]age.”

Hosea’s Wife and Children

The word of the Lord which came to (GI)Hosea the son of Beeri, during the days of (GJ)Uzziah, (GK)Jotham, (GL)Ahaz, and (GM)Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and during the days of (GN)Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “(GO)Go, take for yourself a wife [du]inclined to infidelity, and children of infidelity; for (GP)the land commits flagrant infidelity, [dv]abandoning the Lord.” So he went and took Gomer the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and (GQ)bore him a son. And the Lord said to him, “Name him (GR)Jezreel; for in just a little while (GS)I will [dw]punish the house of Jehu for the bloodshed of Jezreel, and (GT)I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel. On that day I will (GU)break the bow of Israel in the (GV)Valley of Jezreel.”

Then she conceived again and gave birth to a daughter. And [dx]the Lord said to him, “Name her [dy]Lo-ruhamah, for I will no longer (GW)take pity on the house of Israel, that I would ever forgive them. But I will take (GX)pity on the house of Judah and (GY)save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them by (GZ)bow, sword, battle, horses, or horsemen.”

When she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived and gave birth to a son. And [dz]the Lord said, “Name him [ea]Lo-ammi, because you are not My people, and I am not [eb]your God.”

10 [ec]Yet the number of the sons of Israel
Will be like the (HA)sand of the sea,
Which cannot be measured or counted;
And (HB)in the place
Where it is said to them,
“You are (HC)not My people,”
It will be said to them,
You are the (HD)sons of the living God.”
11 And the (HE)sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be (HF)gathered together,
And they will appoint for themselves (HG)one leader,
And they will go up from the land,
For the day of Jezreel will be great.

Israel’s Unfaithfulness Condemned

[ed]Say to your brothers, “[ee]Ammi,” and to your sisters, “[ef]Ruhamah.”

“Dispute with your mother, (HH)dispute,
Because she is (HI)not my wife, and I am not her husband;
But she must remove her (HJ)infidelity from her face
And her adultery from between her breasts,
Otherwise, I will strip her (HK)naked
And expose her as on the (HL)day she was born.
I will also (HM)make her like a wilderness,
Make her like desert land,
And put her to death with (HN)thirst.
Also, I will take no pity on her children,
Because they are (HO)children of infidelity.
For their mother has (HP)committed prostitution;
She who conceived them has acted shamefully.
For she said, ‘(HQ)I will go after my lovers,
Who (HR)give me my bread and my water,
My wool and my flax, my (HS)oil and my drink.’
Therefore, behold, I will (HT)obstruct [eg]her way with (HU)thorns,
And I will build [eh]a stone wall against her so that she cannot find her (HV)paths.
And she will (HW)pursue her lovers, but she will not reach them;
And she will seek them, but will not find them.
Then she will say, ‘(HX)I will go back to my (HY)first husband,
Because it was (HZ)better for me then than now!’

“Yet she does (IA)not know that it was (IB)I myself who gave her the grain, the new wine, and the oil,
And lavished on her silver and gold,
Which they [ei]used for Baal.
Therefore, I will [ej](IC)take back My grain at [ek]harvest time
And My new wine in its season.
I will also take away My wool and My flax
That I gave to cover her nakedness.
10 So now I will (ID)uncover her [el]lewdness
Before the eyes of her lovers,
And no one will rescue her from My hand.
11 I will also (IE)put an end to all her joy,
Her (IF)feasts, her (IG)new moons, her Sabbaths,
And all her festivals.
12 And I will (IH)destroy her vines and fig trees,
Of which she said, ‘They are my wages for prostitution
Which my lovers have given me.’
And I will (II)turn them into a forest,
And the (IJ)animals of the field will devour them.
13 I will punish her for the (IK)days of the Baals
When she used to [em](IL)offer sacrifices to them
And (IM)adorn herself with her nose ring and jewelry,
And follow her lovers, so that she (IN)forgot Me,” declares the Lord.

Restoration of Israel

14 “Therefore, behold, I am going to persuade her,
(IO)Bring her into the wilderness,
And speak [en]kindly to her.
15 Then I will give her her (IP)vineyards from there,
And (IQ)the [eo]Valley of Achor as a door of hope.
And she will [ep](IR)respond there as in the days of her youth,
As in the (IS)day when she went up from the land of Egypt.
16 And it will come about on that day,” declares the Lord,
“That you will call Me [eq](IT)my husband
And no longer call Me my [er]Baal.
17 For (IU)I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth,
So that they will no longer be [es]mentioned by their names.
18 On that day I will also make a covenant for them
With the (IV)animals of the field,
The birds of the sky,
And the crawling things of the ground.
And I will [et](IW)eliminate the bow, the sword, and war from the land,
And will let them (IX)lie down in safety.
19 I will (IY)betroth you to Me forever;
Yes, I will betroth you to Me in (IZ)righteousness and in justice,
In favor and in compassion,
20 And I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness.
Then you will (JA)know the Lord.

21 “And it will come about on that day that (JB)I will respond,” declares the Lord.
“I will respond to the heavens, and they will respond to the earth,
22 And the (JC)earth will respond to the grain, to the new wine, and to the oil,
And they will respond to [eu]Jezreel.
23 I will (JD)sow her for Myself in the land.
(JE)I will also have compassion on [ev]her who had not obtained compassion,
And (JF)I will say to [ew]those who were (JG)not My people,
‘You are My people!’
And [ex]they will say, ‘You are my God!’”

Hosea’s Redemption of Gomer

Then the Lord said to me, “Go again, love [ey]a woman who is loved by her [ez]husband, yet is committing adultery, (JH)as the Lord loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love [fa]raisin (JI)cakes.” So I (JJ)purchased her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver, and a [fb]homer and a [fc]lethech of barley. Then I said to her, “You shall (JK)live with me for many days. You shall not play the prostitute, nor shall you have another man; so I will also be toward you.” For the sons of Israel will live for many days (JL)without a king or leader, (JM)without sacrifice or (JN)memorial stone, and without (JO)ephod or [fd](JP)household idols. Afterward the sons of Israel will (JQ)return and seek the Lord their God and (JR)David their king; and (JS)they will come trembling to the Lord and to His goodness in the last days.

God’s Controversy with Israel

(JT)Listen to the word of the Lord, you sons of Israel,
Because the Lord has a (JU)case against the inhabitants of the land,
For there is (JV)no [fe]faithfulness, nor [ff]loyalty,
Nor (JW)knowledge of God in the land.
There is (JX)oath-taking, (JY)[fg]denial, (JZ)murder, (KA)stealing, and (KB)adultery.
They employ violence, so that (KC)bloodshed [fh]follows bloodshed.
Therefore the land (KD)mourns,
And everyone who lives in it languishes
Along with the animals of the field and the birds of the sky,
And even the fish of the sea [fi]disappear.

Yet let no one [fj](KE)find fault, and let no one rebuke;
For your people are like those who (KF)contend with a priest.
So you will (KG)stumble by day,
And the prophet also will stumble with you by night;
And I will destroy your (KH)mother.
(KI)My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Since you have (KJ)rejected knowledge,
I also will (KK)reject you from being My priest.
Since you have (KL)forgotten the (KM)Law of your God,
I also will forget your children.

The more they (KN)multiplied, the more they sinned against Me;
I will (KO)change their glory into shame.
They (KP)feed on the [fk]sin of My people,
And (KQ)long for their wrongdoing.
And it will be, like people, (KR)like priest;
So I will (KS)punish them for their ways
And repay them for their deeds.
10 (KT)They will eat, but not have enough;
They will (KU)play the prostitute, but not [fl]increase,
Because they (KV)gave up devoting themselves to the Lord.

11 [fm]Infidelity, (KW)wine, and new wine take away the [fn]understanding.
12 My people (KX)consult their wooden idol, and their diviner’s wand informs them;
For a spirit of infidelity has led them astray,
And they have been unfaithful, departing [fo]from their God.
13 They offer sacrifices on the (KY)tops of the mountains
And [fp](KZ)burn incense on the hills,
(LA)Under oak, poplar, and terebinth,
Because their shade is pleasant.
Therefore your daughters play the prostitute,
And your [fq]brides commit adultery.
14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the prostitute,
Or your [fr]brides when they commit adultery,
Because the men themselves slip away with the prostitutes
And offer sacrifices with (LB)temple prostitutes;
So the people without understanding are ruined.

15 Though you, Israel, play the prostitute,
Judah must not become guilty;
Also you are not to go to (LC)Gilgal,
Nor go up to Beth-aven
(LD)And take the oath:
“As the Lord lives!”
16 Since Israel is (LE)stubborn
Like a stubborn cow,
[fs]Will the Lord now (LF)pasture them
Like a lamb in a large field?
17 Ephraim is allied with (LG)idols;
(LH)Leave him alone.
18 Their liquor is gone,
They prostitute themselves continually;
[ft](LI)Their [fu]rulers dearly love shame.
19 (LJ)The wind wraps them in its wings,
And they will be [fv]put to shame because of their sacrifices.

The People’s Apostasy Rebuked

Hear this, you priests!
Pay attention, house of Israel!
Listen, you of the house of the king!
For the judgment applies to you,
Because you have been a (LK)trap at Mizpah,
And a net spread out on Tabor.
And the (LL)rebels have (LM)gone deep in [fw]depravity,
But I will discipline all of them.
I (LN)know Ephraim, and Israel is not hidden from Me;
Because now, Ephraim, you have been unfaithful,
Israel has defiled itself.
Their deeds will not allow them
To return to their God.
For a (LO)spirit of [fx]infidelity is within them,
And they (LP)do not know the Lord.
Moreover, the (LQ)pride of Israel testifies against him,
And Israel and Ephraim stumble in their wrongdoing;
(LR)Judah also has stumbled with them.
They will (LS)go with their flocks and herds
To seek the Lord, but they will (LT)not find Him;
He has (LU)withdrawn from them.
They have (LV)dealt treacherously with the Lord,
For they have given birth to [fy](LW)illegitimate children.
Now the (LX)new moon will devour them with their [fz]land.

(LY)Blow the horn in (LZ)Gibeah,
And the trumpet in Ramah.
Sound an alarm at Beth-aven:
(MA)Behind you, Benjamin!”
Ephraim will become a (MB)desolation in the (MC)day of rebuke;
Among the tribes of Israel I (MD)make known what is trustworthy.
10 The leaders of Judah have become like those who (ME)displace a boundary marker;
On them I will (MF)pour out My anger (MG)like water.
11 Ephraim is (MH)oppressed, broken by judgment,
(MI)Because he was determined to follow [ga]man’s command.
12 Therefore I am like a (MJ)moth to Ephraim,
And like rottenness to the house of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness,
And Judah his [gb]sore,
Ephraim then went to (MK)Assyria
And sent word to [gc](ML)King Jareb.
But he is (MM)unable to heal you,
Or to cure you of your [gd]sore.
14 For I will be (MN)like a lion to Ephraim
And like a young lion to the house of Judah.
(MO)I, yes I, will tear to pieces and go away,
I will carry away, and there will be (MP)no one to rescue.
15 I will go away and return to My place
Until they [ge](MQ)acknowledge their guilt and seek My face;
In their distress they will (MR)search for Me.

The Response to God’s Rebuke

(MS)Come, let’s return to the Lord.
For (MT)He has torn us, but (MU)He will heal us;
He has [gf]wounded us, but He will (MV)bandage us.
He will (MW)revive us after two days;
He will (MX)raise us up on the third day,
That we may live before Him.
So let’s (MY)learn, let’s press on to know the Lord.
His (MZ)appearance is as sure as the dawn;
And He will come to us like the (NA)rain,
As the spring rain waters the earth.”

What shall I do with you, (NB)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, Judah?
For your loyalty is like a (NC)morning cloud,
And like the dew which goes away early.
Therefore I have (ND)cut them in pieces by the prophets;
I have slain them by the (NE)words of My mouth;
And the judgments on you are like the light that [gg]shines.
For (NF)I [gh]desire loyalty (NG)rather than sacrifice,
And the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
But (NH)like [gi]Adam they have (NI)violated the covenant;
There they have (NJ)dealt treacherously with Me.
(NK)Gilead is a city of wrongdoers,
Tracked with (NL)bloody footprints.
And as a (NM)band of robbers lie in wait for a person,
So a band of priests (NN)murder on the way to Shechem;
Certainly they have committed an act of (NO)infamy.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen a (NP)horrible thing;
Ephraim’s (NQ)infidelity is there, Israel has defiled itself.
11 Also, Judah, there is a (NR)harvest appointed for you,
When I (NS)restore the fortunes of My people.

Ephraim’s Wrongdoing

When I (NT)would heal Israel,
The wrongdoing of Ephraim is uncovered,
And the evil deeds of Samaria,
For they practice (NU)deception;
The thief enters,
A band of (NV)robbers attack outside,
And they do not [gj]consider in their hearts
That I (NW)remember all their wickedness.
Now their (NX)deeds surround them;
They are before My face.
(NY)With their wickedness they make the (NZ)king happy,
And the officials with their (OA)lies.
They are (OB)all adulterers,
Like an oven heated by the baker,
Who stops [gk]stoking the fire
From the time the dough is kneaded until it is leavened.
On the [gl]day of our king, the officials (OC)became sick with the heat of wine;
He stretched out his hand with [gm](OD)scoffers,
For their hearts are like an (OE)oven
As they approach their [gn]plotting;
Their [go]anger [gp]smolders all night,
In the morning it burns like flaming fire.
All of them are hot like an oven,
And they consume their (OF)rulers;
All their kings have fallen.
(OG)None of them calls on Me.

Ephraim is himself (OH)thrown about with the [gq]nations;
Ephraim has become a round loaf not turned over.
(OI)Strangers devour his strength,
Yet he (OJ)does not know it;
Gray hairs also are sprinkled on him,
Yet he does not know it.
10 Though the (OK)pride of Israel testifies against him,
Yet (OL)they have not returned to the Lord their God,
Nor have they sought Him, despite all this.
11 So (OM)Ephraim has become like a gullible dove, (ON)without [gr]sense;
They call to (OO)Egypt, they go to (OP)Assyria.
12 When they go, I will (OQ)spread My net over them;
I will bring them down like the birds of the sky.
I will (OR)discipline them in accordance with the [gs]proclamation to their assembly.
13 (OS)Woe to them, for they have (OT)strayed from Me!
Destruction is theirs, for they have rebelled against Me!
I (OU)would redeem them, but they have spoken lies against Me.
14 And (OV)they do not cry to Me from their heart
When they wail on their beds;
For the sake of grain and new wine they [gt](OW)assemble themselves,
They (OX)turn against Me.
15 Although I trained and strengthened their arms,
Yet they (OY)devise evil against Me.
16 They turn, but not [gu]upward,
They are like a (OZ)loose bow;
Their officials will fall by the sword
Because of the [gv](PA)insolence of their tongue.
This will be their (PB)derision in the land of Egypt.

Israel Reaps the Whirlwind

(PC)Put the trumpet to your [gw]lips!
(PD)Like an eagle the enemy comes (PE)against the house of the Lord,
Because they have (PF)violated My covenant
And rebelled against My (PG)Law.
(PH)They cry out to Me,
“My God, (PI)we of Israel know You!”
Israel has rejected the good;
The enemy will pursue him.
(PJ)They have set up kings, but not by Me;
They have appointed officials, but I did not know it.
With their (PK)silver and gold they have made idols for themselves,
So that [gx]they will be eliminated.
[gy]He has rejected your (PL)calf, Samaria, saying,
“My anger burns against them!”
How long will they be incapable of (PM)innocence?
For from Israel comes even this!
A (PN)craftsman made it, so it is not God;
Assuredly, the calf of Samaria will be broken to [gz]pieces.
For (PO)they sow wind
And they harvest a (PP)storm.
The standing grain has no [ha]kernels;
It yields (PQ)no [hb]grain.
If it were to yield, strangers would swallow it.

Israel has been (PR)swallowed up;
They are now among the nations
Like a (PS)vessel in which no one delights.
For they have gone up to (PT)Assyria,
Like (PU)a wild donkey all alone;
Ephraim has (PV)paid fees for [hc]lovers.
10 Even though they [hd]pay for allies among the nations,
I will (PW)gather them up now;
And they will begin (PX)to diminish
Because of the burden of the (PY)king of officials.

11 Since Ephraim has (PZ)multiplied altars for sin,
They have become altars of sinning for him.
12 Though (QA)I wrote for him ten thousand precepts of My (QB)Law,
They are regarded as a strange thing.
13 As for My (QC)sacrificial gifts,
They (QD)sacrifice the flesh and eat it,
But the Lord has taken no delight in them.
Now He will (QE)remember their guilt,
And (QF)punish them for their sins;
They will return to (QG)Egypt.
14 For Israel has (QH)forgotten his Maker and (QI)built palaces;
And Judah has multiplied fortified cities,
But I will send a (QJ)fire on its cities, and it will consume its palatial buildings.

Ephraim Punished

(QK)Do not rejoice, Israel, [he]with jubilation like the [hf]nations!
For you have (QL)been unfaithful, [hg]abandoning your God.
You have loved the earnings of unfaithfulness on [hh]every threshing floor.
Threshing floor and wine press will (QM)not feed them,
And the new wine will fail [hi]them.
They will not remain in (QN)the Lords land,
But Ephraim will return to (QO)Egypt,
And in (QP)Assyria they will eat (QQ)unclean food.
They will not pour out drink offerings of (QR)wine to the Lord,
(QS)Nor will [hj]their sacrifices please Him.
Their bread will be to them like [hk]mourners’ bread;
All who eat it will be (QT)defiled,
Because their bread will be for [hl]themselves alone;
It will not enter the house of the Lord.
(QU)What will you do on the day of the appointed festival
And on the day of the (QV)feast of the Lord?
For behold, they will be gone because of destruction;
Egypt will gather them together, (QW)Memphis will bury them.
Weeds will take possession of their treasures of silver;
(QX)Thorns will be in their tents.

The days of (QY)punishment have come,
The days of (QZ)retribution have come;
[hm]Let Israel know this!
The prophet is a (RA)fool,
The [hn]inspired person is (RB)insane,
Because of the grossness of your (RC)wrongdoing,
And because your [ho]hostility is so great.
Ephraim was a watchman with my God, a prophet;
Yet the snare of a bird catcher is in all his ways,
And there is only [hp]hostility in the house of his God.
They are (RD)deeply depraved
As in the days of (RE)Gibeah;
He will (RF)remember their guilt,
He will punish their sins.

10 I found Israel like (RG)grapes in the wilderness;
I saw your forefathers as the (RH)earliest fruit on the fig tree in its first season.
But they came to (RI)Baal-peor and devoted themselves to [hq](RJ)shame,
And they became as (RK)detestable as that which they loved.
11 As for Ephraim, their (RL)glory will fly away like a bird—
No birth, no pregnancy, and no conception!
12 Though they bring up their children,
Yet I will bereave them of their children [hr]until not a person is left.
Yes, (RM)woe to them indeed when I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, as I have seen,
Is planted in a pasture like (RN)Tyre;
But Ephraim is going to bring out his children for slaughter.
14 Give to them, Lord—what will You give?
Give them a (RO)miscarrying womb and dried-up breasts.

15 All their evil is at (RP)Gilgal;
Indeed, I came to hate them there!
Because of the (RQ)wickedness of their deeds
I will drive them out of My house!
I will no longer love them;
All their leaders are (RR)rebels.
16 (RS)Ephraim is stricken, their root is dried up,
They will produce (RT)no fruit.
Even though they give birth to children,
I will put to death the (RU)precious ones of their womb.
17 My God will reject them
Because they have (RV)not listened to Him;
And they will be (RW)wanderers among the nations.

Retribution for Israel’s Sin

10 Israel is a luxuriant (RX)vine;
He produces fruit for himself.
The more his fruit,
The more altars he (RY)made;
The [hs]richer his land,
The better [ht]he made the (RZ)memorial stones.
Their heart is [hu](SA)deceitful;
Now they must suffer for their (SB)guilt.
[hv]The Lord will (SC)break down their altars
And destroy their memorial stones.

Certainly now they will say, “We have (SD)no king,
For we do not revere the Lord.
As for the king, what can he do for us?”
They speak mere words,
[hw]With (SE)worthless oaths they make covenants;
And (SF)judgment sprouts like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.
The inhabitants of Samaria will fear
For the [hx](SG)calf of (SH)Beth-aven.
Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
And its (SI)idolatrous priests [hy]will cry out over it,
Over its (SJ)glory, since it has left it.
The thing itself will be brought to (SK)Assyria
As a gift of tribute to [hz](SL)King Jareb;
Ephraim will [ia]be (SM)seized with shame,
And Israel will be ashamed of its (SN)own plan.
Samaria will be (SO)destroyed with her king,
Like a twig on the surface of the water.
Also the (SP)high places of Aven, the (SQ)sin of Israel, will be destroyed;
(SR)Thorns and thistles will grow on their altars;
Then they will (SS)say to the mountains,
“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
Since the days of Gibeah you have sinned, Israel;
There they stand!
Will the battle against the sons of injustice not overtake them in Gibeah?
10 When it is My (ST)desire, I will [ib](SU)discipline them;
And (SV)the peoples will be gathered against them
When they are bound for their double guilt.

11 Ephraim is a trained (SW)heifer that loves to thresh,
[ic]And I (SX)passed over her lovely neck;
I will harness Ephraim,
Judah will plow, Jacob will [id]harrow for himself.
12 (SY)Sow for yourselves, with a view to righteousness;
Harvest in accordance with [ie]kindness.
(SZ)Break up your uncultivated ground,
For it is time to (TA)seek the Lord
Until He (TB)comes and (TC)rains righteousness on you.
13 You have (TD)plowed wickedness, you have harvested injustice,
You have eaten the fruit of (TE)lies.
Because you have trusted in your way, in your (TF)many warriors,
14 An uproar will arise among your people,
And all your (TG)fortresses will be destroyed,
As Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle,
When (TH)mothers were [if]slaughtered with their children.
15 So it will be done to you at Bethel because of your great wickedness.
At dawn the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.

God Yearns over His People

11 When Israel was a youth I loved him,
And (TI)out of Egypt I (TJ)called My son.
The more [ig](TK)they called them,
The more they went away from [ih]them;
They kept (TL)sacrificing to the Baals
And (TM)burning incense to idols.
Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk,
[ii]I (TN)took them in My arms;
But they did not know that I (TO)healed them.
I (TP)pulled them along with cords of a man, with ropes of love,
And (TQ)I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws;
And I bent down and (TR)fed them.

[ij]They will not return to the land of Egypt;
But Assyria—he will be [ik]their king
Because they (TS)refused to return to Me.
And the (TT)sword will whirl against [il]their cities,
And will destroy [im]their oracle priests
And (TU)consume them, because of their (TV)counsels.
So My people are determined to (TW)turn from Me.
Though [in]they call [io]them to the One on high,
None at all exalts Him.

(TX)How can I give you up, Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, Israel?
How can I [ip]make you like (TY)Admah?
How can I treat you like (TZ)Zeboiim?
My heart is turned over within Me,
[iq]All My compassions are kindled.
I will (UA)not carry out My fierce anger;
I will not destroy Ephraim (UB)again.
For (UC)I am God and not a man, the (UD)Holy One in your midst,
And I will not come in [ir]wrath.
10 They will (UE)walk after the Lord,
He will (UF)roar like a lion;
Indeed He will roar,
And His sons will come (UG)trembling from the west.
11 They will come trembling like birds from (UH)Egypt,
And like (UI)doves from the land of (UJ)Assyria;
And I will (UK)settle them in their houses, declares the Lord.

12 [is]Ephraim surrounds Me with (UL)lies
And the house of Israel with deceit;
[it]Judah is still unruly against God,
Even against the Holy One who is faithful.

Ephraim Reminded

12 [iu]Ephraim feeds on (UM)wind,
And pursues the (UN)east wind continually;
He multiplies lies and violence.
Moreover, [iv]he makes a covenant with Assyria,
And oil is brought to Egypt.
The Lord also has a (UO)case against Judah,
And will punish Jacob (UP)according to his ways;
He will repay him according to his deeds.
In the womb he (UQ)took his brother by the heel,
And in his mature strength he (UR)contended with God.
Yes, he wrestled with the angel and prevailed;
He wept and (US)implored His favor.
He found Him at (UT)Bethel,
And there He spoke with us,
And the Lord, the God of armies,
The Lord is His [iw](UU)name.
So as for you, (UV)return to your God,
(UW)Maintain [ix]kindness and justice,
And (UX)wait for your God continually.
A [iy]merchant, in whose hands are fraudulent (UY)balances,
Loves to exploit.
And Ephraim said, “I have certainly become (UZ)rich,
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors they will find in me
(VA)No wrongdoing, which would be sin.”
But I have been the Lord your God since the land of Egypt;
I will make you (VB)live in tents again,
As in the days of the appointed festival.
10 I have also spoken to the (VC)prophets,
And I [iz]provided many visions,
And through the prophets I spoke in (VD)parables.
11 Is there injustice in Gilead?
Certainly they are worthless.
In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls,
Yes, (VE)their altars are like stone heaps
Beside the furrows of a field.

12 Now (VF)Jacob fled to the [ja]land of Aram,
And (VG)Israel worked for a wife,
And for a wife he kept sheep.
13 But by a (VH)prophet the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
And by a prophet he was protected.
14 (VI)Ephraim has provoked God to bitter anger;
So his Lord will leave his (VJ)guilt for bloodshed on him
And bring his (VK)disgrace back to him.

Ephraim’s Idolatry

13 (VL)When Ephraim [jb]spoke, there was trembling.
He (VM)exalted himself in Israel,
But through (VN)Baal he incurred guilt and died.
And now they sin more and more,
And make for themselves (VO)cast metal images,
Idols [jc](VP)skillfully made from their silver,
All of them the (VQ)work of craftsmen.
They say of them, “Let the [jd]people who sacrifice kiss the (VR)calves!”
Therefore they will be like the (VS)morning cloud
And like dew which [je]soon disappears,
Like (VT)chaff which is blown away from the threshing floor,
And like (VU)smoke from a chimney.

Yet I have been the (VV)Lord your God
Since the land of Egypt;
And you were not to know (VW)any god except Me,
For there is no savior (VX)besides Me.
I [jf](VY)cared for you in the wilderness,
(VZ)In the land of drought.
As they had their pasture, they became (WA)satisfied,
And as they became satisfied, their (WB)heart became proud;
Therefore they (WC)forgot Me.
So I will be (WD)like a lion to them;
Like a (WE)leopard I will [jg]lie in wait by the wayside.
I will confront them (WF)like a bear deprived of her cubs,
And I will tear open [jh]their chests;
I will also (WG)devour them there like a lioness,
As a wild animal would tear them to pieces.

[ji]It is to your own destruction, Israel,
That you are (WH)against Me, against your (WI)help.
10 Where then is your (WJ)king,
That he might save you in all your cities;
And your (WK)judges, to whom you said,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11 I (WL)gave you a king in My anger,
And (WM)took him away in My wrath.

12 The guilt of Ephraim is wrapped up;
His sin is (WN)stored up.
13 The pains of (WO)childbirth come on him;
He is (WP)not a wise son,
For [jj]it is not the time that he should (WQ)delay at the opening of the womb.
14 Shall I (WR)ransom them from the [jk]power of Sheol?
Shall I redeem them from death?
(WS)Death, where are your [jl]thorns?
Sheol, where is your sting?
(WT)Compassion will be hidden from My sight.

15 Though he (WU)flourishes among the [jm]reeds,
An (WV)east wind will come,
The wind of the Lord coming up from the wilderness;
And his fountain will (WW)become dry
And his spring will dry up;
It will (WX)plunder his treasury of every precious article.
16 [jn]Samaria will pay the penalty for her (WY)guilt,
Because she has (WZ)rebelled against her God.
(XA)They will fall by the (XB)sword,
Their children will be [jo](XC)slaughtered,
And their pregnant (XD)women will be ripped open.
