It was now the first year of the reign of King Darius, the son of Ahasuerus. (Darius was a Mede but became king of the Chaldeans.) In that first year of his reign, I, Daniel, learned from the book of Jeremiah the prophet that Jerusalem must lie desolate for seventy years.[a] So I earnestly pleaded with the Lord God to end our captivity and send us back to our own land.[b]

As I prayed, I fasted and wore rough sackcloth, and I sprinkled myself with ashes and confessed my sins and those of my people.

“O Lord,” I prayed, “you are a great and awesome God; you always fulfill your promises of mercy to those who love you and keep your laws. But we have sinned so much; we have rebelled against you and scorned your commands. We have refused to listen to your servants the prophets, whom you sent again and again down through the years, with your messages to our kings and princes and to all the people.

“O Lord, you are righteous; but as for us, we are always shamefaced with sin, just as you see us now; yes, all of us—the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, and all Israel, scattered near and far wherever you have driven us because of our disloyalty to you. O Lord, we and our kings and princes and fathers are weighted down with shame because of all our sins.

“But the Lord our God is merciful and pardons even those who have rebelled against him.

10 “O Lord our God, we have disobeyed you; we have flouted all the laws you gave us through your servants, the prophets. 11 All Israel has disobeyed; we have turned away from you and haven’t listened to your voice. And so the awesome curse of God has crushed us—the curse written in the law of Moses your servant. 12 And you have done exactly as you warned us you would do, for never in all history has there been a disaster like what happened at Jerusalem to us and our rulers. 13 Every curse against us written in the law of Moses has come true; all the evils he predicted—all have come. But even so we still refuse to satisfy the Lord our God by turning from our sins and doing right.

14 “And so the Lord deliberately crushed us with the calamity he prepared; he is fair in everything he does, but we would not obey. 15 O Lord our God, you brought lasting honor to your name by removing your people from Egypt in a great display of power. Lord, do it again! Though we have sinned so much and are full of wickedness, 16 yet because of all your faithful mercies, Lord, please turn away your furious anger from Jerusalem, your own city, your holy mountain. For the heathen mock at you because your city lies in ruins for our sins.

17 “O our God, hear your servant’s prayer! Listen as I plead! Let your face shine again with peace and joy upon your desolate sanctuary—for your own glory, Lord.

18 “O my God, bend down your ear and listen to my plea. Open your eyes and see our wretchedness, how your city lies in ruins—for everyone knows that it is yours. We don’t ask because we merit help, but because you are so merciful despite our grievous sins.

19 “O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive. O Lord, listen to me and act! Don’t delay—for your own sake, O my God, because your people and your city bear your name.”

20 Even while I was praying and confessing my sin and the sins of my people, desperately pleading with the Lord my God for Jerusalem, his holy mountain, 21 Gabriel, whom I had seen in the earlier vision, flew swiftly to me at the time of the evening sacrifice 22 and said to me, “Daniel, I am here to help you understand God’s plans. 23 The moment you began praying a command was given. I am here to tell you what it was, for God loves you very much. Listen and try to understand the meaning of the vision that you saw!

24 “The Lord has commanded 490 years[c] of further punishment upon Jerusalem and your people. Then at last they will learn to stay away from sin, and their guilt will be cleansed; then the kingdom of everlasting righteousness will begin, and the Most Holy Place in the Temple will be rededicated, as the prophets have declared. 25 Now listen! It will be 49 years plus 434 years[d] from the time the command is given to rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One comes! Jerusalem’s streets and walls will be rebuilt despite the perilous times.

26 “After this period of 434 years, the Anointed One will be killed, his kingdom still unrealized . . . and a king will arise whose armies will destroy the city and the Temple. They will be overwhelmed as with a flood, and war and its miseries are decreed from that time to the very end. 27 This king will make a seven-year treaty with the people, but after half that time, he will break his pledge and stop the Jews from all their sacrifices and their offerings; then, as a climax to all his terrible deeds, the Enemy shall utterly defile the sanctuary of God. But in God’s time and plan, his judgment will be poured out upon this Evil One.”

Ang Panalangin ni Daniel para sa Kanyang mga Kababayan

Hindi kami nakinig sa inyong mga lingkod na propeta na binigyan ninyo ng kapangyarihang magpahayag sa aming mga hari, pinuno, magulang at sa buong bayan. Panginoon,(B) lagi po kayong nasa katuwiran at kami hanggang ngayo'y nasa kahihiyan, gayundin po ang buong Juda at Jerusalem, ang buong Israel, pati ang mga ipinatapon ninyo sa iba't ibang dako dahil sa kanilang kataksilan. Kami po, O Yahweh, ang aming mga hari, pinuno at magulang ay nahihiya sapagkat nagkasala kami sa inyo. Lumalapit po kami sa inyo hindi dahil sa kami'y matuwid kundi dahil sa kayo'y mahabagin. 19 Dinggin po ninyo kami, O Panginoon; patawarin po ninyo kami, O Panginoon; kahabagan po ninyo kami, O Panginoon. Alang-alang sa inyo, aking Diyos, huwag na po kayong mag-atubili, yamang ang inyong lunsod at ang inyong sambayanan ay nakatatag sa ibabaw ng inyong kapangyarihan.”

Ipinaliwanag ni Gabriel ang Pahayag

20 Habang ako'y nananalangin at ipinapahayag ko ang aking kasalanan at ang kasalanan ng bayan kong Israel, nakikiusap ako Yahweh, aking Diyos, alang-alang sa banal na bundok ng aking Diyos, 21 ang(G) anghel na si Gabriel, na nakita ko sa aking unang pangitain, ay mabilis na lumipad palapit sa akin sa oras ng paghahandog sa gabi. 22 Sinabi niya, “Daniel, naparito ako para bigyan ka ng karunungan at pang-unawa. 23 Sa simula pa lamang ng iyong pakikiusap ay tinugon ka na ng Diyos. Labis ka niyang minamahal. Naparito ako para sabihin sa iyo ang kanyang tugon, kaya makinig ka upang maunawaan mo ang pangitain.

24 “Pitumpung linggo[a] ang panahong palugit sa iyong sambayanan at sa banal na lunsod upang tigilan ang pagsuway, wakasan ang kasamaan, at pagbayaran ang kasalanan. Pagkatapos, maghahari na ang walang hanggang katarungan, magaganap ang kahulugan ng pangitain at ang pahayag; itatalaga na rin ang Kabanal-banalan. 25 Unawain mo ito: Mula sa pagbibigay ng utos na muling itayo ang Jerusalem hanggang sa pagdating ng pinunong hinirang ng Diyos ay lilipas ang pitong linggo.[b] Muling itatayo ang Jerusalem, ang mga lansangan at pader nito ay aayusin sa loob ng animnapu't dalawang linggo;[c] ito ay panahon rin ng kaguluhan. 26 Pagkalipas ng animnapu't dalawang linggo,[d] papatayin ang hinirang ng Diyos. Ang lunsod at ang templo ay wawasakin ng hukbo ng isang makapangyarihang hari. Daniel’s Prayer

“In the first year of the reign of Darius son of Ahasuerus, a descendant of the Medes, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans[a] in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, noted in the Scripture the total years that were assigned[b] by the message from the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem: 70 years.

“So I turned my attention to the Lord God, seeking him in prayer and supplication, accompanied with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God, confessing and saying:

‘Lord! Great and awesome God, who keeps his[c] covenant and gracious love for those who love him and obey his commandments, we’ve sinned, we’ve practiced evil, we’ve acted wickedly, and we’ve rebelled, turning away from your commands and from your regulations. Furthermore, we haven’t listened to your servants, the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, to our officials, to our ancestors, and to all of the people of the land.

‘To you, Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us, open humiliation—even to this day, to the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, both those who are nearby and those who are far away in all the lands to which you drove them because of their unfaithful acts that they committed against you.

‘Open humiliation belongs to us, Lord, to our kings, our officials, and our ancestors, because we’ve sinned against you. But to the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we’ve rebelled against him 10 and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God by walking in his laws that he gave us through his servants the prophets. 11 And all Israel flouted your Law, turning aside from it and not obeying your voice. Because we’ve sinned against him, the curse has been poured upon us, along with the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God.

12 ‘He has confirmed his accusation[d] that he spoke against us and against our rulers who governed us by bringing upon us great calamity, because nowhere in the universe[e] has anything been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. 13 As it’s written in the Law of Moses,[f] all this calamity has befallen us, but we still haven’t sought the Lord our God by turning from our lawlessness to pay attention to your truth. 14 So the Lord watched for the right time to bring the calamity upon us, because the Lord our God is righteous regarding everything he does, but we have not obeyed his voice.

15 ‘And now, Lord our God, who brought your people from the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made a name for yourself that remains to this day—we’ve sinned. We’ve acted wickedly. 16 Lord, in view of all your righteous acts, please turn your anger and wrath away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. Because of our sins and the iniquities of our ancestors, Jerusalem and your people have become an embarrassment to all of those around us.

17 ‘So now, O[g] God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his requests, and look with favor on your desolate sanctuary, for the sake of the Lord. 18 Turn your ear and listen, O God. Open your eyes and look at our desolation and at the city that is called by your name. We’re not presenting our requests before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great compassion.

19 ‘Lord, listen!

‘Lord, forgive!

‘Lord, take note and take action!

‘For your own sake, don’t delay, my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.’”

Gabriel’s Answer: The Seventy Weeks

20 “While I was still speaking in prayer, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and placing my request in the presence of the Lord my God on behalf of the holy mountain of God— 21 while I was still speaking, Gabriel, the man of God whom I had seen in the previous vision, appeared to me about the time of the evening offering. 22 He gave instructions, and this is what he spoke to me:

‘Daniel, I’ve now come to give you insight and understanding. 23 Because you’re highly regarded, the answer was issued when you began your prayer, and I’ve come to tell you. Pay attention to my message and you’ll understand the vision. 24 Seventy weeks[h] have been decreed concerning your people and your holy city: to restrain transgression, to put an end to sin, to make atonement for lawlessness, to establish everlasting righteousness, to conclude vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy Place. 25 So be informed and discern that seven weeks and 62 weeks will elapse[i] from the issuance of the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed Commander.[j] The plaza and moat will be rebuilt, though in troubled times. 26 Then after the 62 weeks, the anointed one[k] will be cut down (but not for himself).[l] Then the people of the Coming Commander[m] will destroy both the city and the Sanctuary. Its ending will come like a flood, and until the end there will be war, with desolations having been decreed. 27 He will make a binding covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he will suspend both the sacrifice and grain offerings. Destructive people will cause desolation on the uttermost edge[n] of the Sanctuary[o] until it is complete and what has been decreed is poured out on the desolator.’”
