9 Era în primul an de domnie al lui Darius, fiul lui Ahaşveroş[a], din neamul mezilor, care fusese făcut împărat peste împărăţia caldeenilor. 2 Deci în primul său an de domnie, eu, Daniel, am înţeles din cărţi numărul de ani care trebuiau să se împlinească, după Cuvântul Domnului spus profetului Ieremia, cu privire la ruinele Ierusalimului. Era vorba despre şaptezeci de ani.[b] 3 Mi-am îndreptat faţa către Stăpânul, către Dumnezeu, ca să-L caut cu rugăciune, cu cereri şi cu post în sac şi cenuşă.
4 M-am rugat Domnului, Dumnezeul meu, şi I-am mărturisit, zicând:
„O, Stăpâne, Dumnezeule mare şi înfricoşător, Cel Ce păstrezi legământul şi îndurarea[c] faţă de cei ce Te iubesc şi păzesc poruncile Tale, 5 am păcătuit, am greşit, am fost răi şi ne-am răzvrătit, ne-am îndepărtat de poruncile şi orânduirile Tale. 6 Nu am ascultat de slujitorii Tăi, profeţii, care vorbeau în Numele Tău regilor noştri, prinţilor şi strămoşilor noştri şi întregului popor din ţară.
7 De partea Ta, Stăpâne, este dreptatea, şi nouă se cuvine astăzi să ni se umple faţa de ruşine, da, nouă, fiecărui bărbat al lui Iuda, locuitorilor Ierusalimului şi întregului Israel, de aproape sau de departe, din orice ţară unde i-ai izgonit din pricina necredincioşiei lor de care s-au făcut vinovaţi faţă de Tine. 8 Doamne, nouă se cuvine să ni se umple faţa de ruşine, da, nouă, regilor noştri, căpeteniilor noastre şi strămoşilor noştri, căci am păcătuit faţă de Tine!
9 La Stăpânul, Dumnezeul nostru, este însă mila şi iertarea, cu toate că[d] împotriva Lui ne-am răzvrătit! 10 N-am ascultat de glasul Domnului, Dumnezeul nostru, ca să urmăm legile Lui pe care ni le-a dat prin slujitorii Săi, profeţii. 11 Tot Israelul a încălcat Legea Ta şi astfel s-a îndepărtat, refuzând să asculte de glasul Tău. De aceea s-au revărsat peste noi blestemul şi jurământul care au fost scrise în Legea lui Moise, robul lui Dumnezeu, căci împotriva lui Dumnezeu am păcătuit. 12 El Şi-a împlinit astfel cuvântul pe care-l rostise împotriva noastră şi împotriva conducătorilor noştri care ne judecau, aducând peste noi o aşa mare nenorocire, încât ceea ce i s-a întâmplat Ierusalimului nu s-a mai întâmplat nicăieri sub ceruri. 13 După cum este scris în Legea lui Moise, aşa a venit peste noi toată nenorocirea aceasta, iar noi nu ne-am rugat Domnului, Dumnezeul nostru, ca să ne întoarcem de la fărădelegile noastre şi să luăm aminte la adevărul Tău. 14 De aceea, Domnul a avut grijă să aducă nenorocirea aceasta peste noi, căci Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, este drept în toate lucrările pe care le-a făcut, dar noi nu am ascultat de glasul Lui.
15 Acum, Stăpâne, Dumnezeul nostru, Tu, Care l-ai scos pe poporul Tău din ţara Egiptului cu braţul Tău cel puternic şi Care Ţi-ai făcut un Nume, aşa cum este şi astăzi, noi am păcătuit şi am fost răi. 16 Stăpâne, potrivit cu toate lucrările Tale înfăptuite cu dreptate, îndepărtează-Ţi, Te rog, mânia şi furia de la cetatea Ta, Ierusalimul, de la muntele Tău cel sfânt, căci, din pricina păcatelor şi fărădelegilor strămoşilor noştri, a ajuns Ierusalimul şi poporul Tău de ruşinea tuturor celor ce ne înconjoară!
17 Acum dar, Dumnezeul nostru, ascultă rugăciunea robului Tău şi cererile lui şi, de dragul Tău, Stăpâne, fă să lumineze faţa Ta peste Lăcaşul Tău devastat! 18 Pleacă-Ţi urechea, Dumnezeule, şi ascultă! Deschide-Ţi ochii şi priveşte la ruinele noastre şi la cetatea peste care este chemat Numele Tău! Căci nu datorită faptelor noastre drepte aducem cererile noastre înaintea Ta, ci pentru îndurările Tale cele mari. 19 Ascultă, Stăpâne! Iartă, Stăpâne! Ia aminte, Stăpâne! Lucrează şi nu întârzia, de dragul Tău, Dumnezeul meu! Căci Numele Tău este chemat peste cetatea Ta şi peste poporul Tău!“
Cei şaptezeci de ori câte şapte ani
20 În timp ce vorbeam, mă rugam şi mărturiseam păcatul meu şi păcatul poporului meu, Israel, şi în timp ce îmi aduceam cererile înaintea Domnului, Dumnezeul meu, cu privire la muntele cel sfânt al Dumnezeului meu, 21 deci, în timp ce eu încă vorbeam în rugăciune, „omul“ Gabriel[e], pe care-l văzusem în viziunea dinainte, a venit repede în zbor şi s-a apropiat de mine chiar în clipa când se aducea jertfa de seară. 22 El m-a făcut să înţeleg, spunându-mi astfel: „Daniele, am venit acum să-ţi dau discernământ şi înţelegere. 23 Când ai început să te rogi, a ieşit un cuvânt, iar eu am venit să te înştiinţez, căci tu eşti plăcut lui Dumnezeu. 24 O perioadă de şaptezeci de ori câte şapte ani a fost hotărâtă
pentru poporul tău şi pentru cetatea ta sfântă,
pentru a se sfârşi[f] nelegiuirea,
pentru a se opri[g] păcatele,
pentru a fi ispăşită vina,
pentru a fi adusă dreptatea veşnică,
pentru a fi pecetluită viziunea şi profeţia
şi pentru a unge pe Cel Preasfânt[h].
25 Să ştii şi să înţelegi aceasta:
de la darea poruncii de restaurare şi rezidire a Ierusalimului[i]
până la Unsul[j], Conducătorul,
va fi o perioadă de şapte ori câte şapte ani
şi apoi încă o perioadă de şaizeci şi două de ori câte şapte ani.
Piaţa şi şanţul îi vor fi refăcute,
însă în vremuri de strâmtorare.[k]
26 După perioada de şaizeci şi două de ori câte şapte ani,
Unsul va fi nimicit şi nu va avea nimic.[l]
Poporul unui conducător care va veni
va distruge cetatea şi Sfântul Lăcaş.
Sfârşitul lui va fi ca printr-un potop,
iar războiul va ţine până la sfârşit.
Pustiirile sunt hotărâte.
27 El va încheia un legământ ferm cu mulţi
pentru o perioadă de şapte ani,
dar la jumătatea celor şapte ani
va pune capăt jertfei şi darului de mâncare.
Şi pe streaşina[m] Templului va aşeza urâciunea pustiirii[n],
până va fi revărsat asupra celui pustiit[o] întregul prăpăd hotărât.“

9 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;
2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
4 And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;
5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.
8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.
9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;
10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.
11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.
12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.
13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.
14 Therefore hath the Lord watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the Lord our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.
15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
16 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake.
18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.
19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.
20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God;
21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Daniel Confesses Israel’s Sins
9 “In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of Median descent, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans, 2 in the first year of his reign—I, Daniel, understood from the books that according to the word of Adonai to Jeremiah the prophet, the number of the years for the fulfilling of the desolation of Jerusalem would be 70 years. 3 So I set my face to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes.
4 “I prayed to Adonai my God and confessed, saying: ‘O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and mercy with those who love Him and keep His mitzvot, 5 we have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have acted wickedly; we have rebelled; we have turned away from Your mitzvot and from Your rulings. 6 We have not listened to Your servants the prophets,[a] who spoke in Your name to our kings, our leaders and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
7 “‘You Lord are righteousness, but shame covers our face to this day—the people of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and all Israel, near and far, in all the countries where you have banished them—because they behaved unfaithfully toward you. 8 Adonai, shame covers our face—our kings, our leaders, our fathers—because we have sinned against you. 9 The Lord our God is compassionate and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against Him. 10 We have not obeyed the voice of Adonai Eloheinu by walking in His Torah that He set before us through His servants the prophets. 11 Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your Torah and has turned away—not obeying Your voice.
“‘Therefore the curse and sworn judgment written in the Torah of Moses the servant of God has been poured out upon us, for we have sinned against Him. 12 So He has confirmed His words that he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled over us by bringing on us a great calamity. Under the whole heaven nothing like this has ever been done to Jerusalem! [b] 13 As it is written in the Torah of Moses, all this calamity came on us, yet we have not sought the favor of Adonai Eloheinu by turning away from our iniquities and paying attention to Your truth. 14 So Adonai was intent on bringing the calamity upon us, for Adonai Eloheinu is righteous in all His deeds that He has done—while we have not paid attention to His voice.
15 “‘So now, Adonai Eloheinu, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and made for Yourself a Name to this day—we have sinned, we have acted wickedly. 16 Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, let Your anger and Your fury turn away, please, from Jerusalem, Your city, Your holy mountain. Because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people have become an object of scorn to all those around us.
17 ‘So now, our God, listen to the prayers and petitions of Your servant, and cause Your face to shine upon Your devastated Sanctuary, for the sake of my Lord. 18 Give ear, my God, and hear! Open Your eyes and see our desolation and the city called by Your name. We do not present our supplications before You because of our own righteousness, but because of Your great compassions. 19 Lord, hear! Lord, forgive! Lord, listen and act! For Your own sake, O my God, do not delay! For Your city and Your people are called by Your name.’
The Mashiach and Seventy Weeks
20 “While I was still speaking and praying, confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Adonai my God on behalf of the holy mountain of my God— 21 yes, while I was praying, Gabriel, the one I had seen in the earlier vision,[c] came to me swiftly about the time of the evening offering.
22 “He instructed me and said to me: ‘Daniel, I have come now to give you insight and understanding. 23 At the beginning of your requests, a message went out, and I have come to declare it to you, for you are greatly esteemed. Therefore consider the message and understand the vision:
24 “Seventy weeks[d] are decreed concerning your people and your holy city,
to put an end to transgression
to bring sin to an end,
to atone for iniquity,
to bring in everlasting righteousness,
to seal up vision and prophecy,
and to anoint the Holy of Holies.
25 So know and understand:
From the issuing of the decree to restore and to build Jerusalem until the time Mashiach,[e] the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and 62 weeks.
It will be rebuilt, with plaza and moat, but it will be in times of distress.
26 Then after the 62 weeks Mashiach will be cut off and have nothing.[f]
Then the people of a prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary.[g] But his end will come like a flood. Until the end of the war that is decreed there will be destruction.
27 Then he will make a firm covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on a wing of abominations will come one who destroys,[h] until the decreed annihilation is poured out on the one who destroys.’”
