9 La première année de Darius, fils d'Assuérus, de la race des Mèdes, lequel était devenu roi du royaume des Chaldéens,
2 la première année de son règne, moi, Daniel, je vis par les livres qu'il devait s'écouler soixante-dix ans pour les ruines de Jérusalem, d'après le nombre des années dont l'Éternel avait parlé à Jérémie, le prophète.
3 Je tournai ma face vers le Seigneur Dieu, afin de recourir à la prière et aux supplications, en jeûnant et en prenant le sac et la cendre.
4 Je priai l'Éternel, mon Dieu, et je lui fis cette confession: Seigneur, Dieu grand et redoutable, toi qui gardes ton alliance et qui fais miséricorde à ceux qui t'aiment et qui observent tes commandements!
5 Nous avons péché, nous avons commis l'iniquité, nous avons été méchants et rebelles, nous nous sommes détournés de tes commandements et de tes ordonnances.
6 Nous n'avons pas écouté tes serviteurs, les prophètes, qui ont parlé en ton nom à nos rois, à nos chefs, à nos pères, et à tout le peuple du pays.
7 A toi, Seigneur, est la justice, et à nous la confusion de face, en ce jour, aux hommes de Juda, aux habitants de Jérusalem, et à tout Israël, à ceux qui sont près et à ceux qui sont loin, dans tous les pays où tu les as chassés à cause des infidélités dont ils se sont rendus coupables envers toi.
8 Seigneur, à nous la confusion de face, à nos rois, à nos chefs, et à nos pères, parce que nous avons péché contre toi.
9 Auprès du Seigneur, notre Dieu, la miséricorde et le pardon, car nous avons été rebelles envers lui.
10 Nous n'avons pas écouté la voix de l'Éternel, notre Dieu, pour suivre ses lois qu'il avait mises devant nous par ses serviteurs, les prophètes.
11 Tout Israël a transgressé ta loi, et s'est détourné pour ne pas écouter ta voix. Alors se sont répandues sur nous les malédictions et les imprécations qui sont écrites dans la loi de Moïse, serviteur de Dieu, parce que nous avons péché contre Dieu.
12 Il a accompli les paroles qu'il avait prononcées contre nous et contre nos chefs qui nous ont gouvernés, il a fait venir sur nous une grande calamité, et il n'en est jamais arrivé sous le ciel entier une semblable à celle qui est arrivée à Jérusalem.
13 Comme cela est écrit dans la loi de Moïse, toute cette calamité est venue sur nous; et nous n'avons pas imploré l'Éternel, notre Dieu, nous ne nous sommes pas détournés de nos iniquités, nous n'avons pas été attentifs à ta vérité.
14 L'Éternel a veillé sur cette calamité, et l'a fait venir sur nous; car l'Éternel, notre Dieu, est juste dans toutes les choses qu'il a faites, mais nous n'avons pas écouté sa voix.
15 Et maintenant, Seigneur, notre Dieu, toi qui as fait sortir ton peuple du pays d'Égypte par ta main puissante, et qui t'es fait un nom comme il l'est aujourd'hui, nous avons péché, nous avons commis l'iniquité.
16 Seigneur, selon ta grande miséricorde, que ta colère et ta fureur se détournent de ta ville de Jérusalem, de ta montagne sainte; car, à cause de nos péchés et des iniquités de nos pères, Jérusalem et ton peuple sont en opprobre à tous ceux qui nous entourent.
17 Maintenant donc, ô notre Dieu, écoute la prière et les supplications de ton serviteur, et, pour l'amour du Seigneur, fais briller ta face sur ton sanctuaire dévasté!
18 Mon Dieu, prête l'oreille et écoute! ouvre les yeux et regarde nos ruines, regarde la ville sur laquelle ton nom est invoqué! Car ce n'est pas à cause de notre justice que nous te présentons nos supplications, c'est à cause de tes grandes compassions.
19 Seigneur, écoute! Seigneur, pardonne! Seigneur, sois attentif! agis et ne tarde pas, par amour pour toi, ô mon Dieu! Car ton nom est invoqué sur ta ville et sur ton peuple.
20 Je parlais encore, je priais, je confessais mon péché et le péché de mon peuple d'Israël, et je présentais mes supplications à l'Éternel, mon Dieu, en faveur de la sainte montagne de mon Dieu;
21 je parlais encore dans ma prière, quand l'homme, Gabriel, que j'avais vu précédemment dans une vision, s'approcha de moi d'un vol rapide, au moment de l'offrande du soir.
22 Il m'instruisit, et s'entretint avec moi. Il me dit: Daniel, je suis venu maintenant pour ouvrir ton intelligence.
23 Lorsque tu as commencé à prier, la parole est sortie, et je viens pour te l'annoncer; car tu es un bien-aimé. Sois attentif à la parole, et comprends la vision!
24 Soixante-dix semaines ont été fixées sur ton peuple et sur ta ville sainte, pour faire cesser les transgressions et mettre fin aux péchés, pour expier l'iniquité et amener la justice éternelle, pour sceller la vision et le prophète, et pour oindre le Saint des saints.
25 Sache-le donc, et comprends! Depuis le moment où la parole a annoncé que Jérusalem sera rebâtie jusqu'à l'Oint, au Conducteur, il y a sept semaines et soixante-deux semaines, les places et les fossés seront rétablis, mais en des temps fâcheux.
26 Après les soixante-deux semaines, un Oint sera retranché, et il n'aura pas de successeur. Le peuple d'un chef qui viendra détruira la ville et le sanctuaire, et sa fin arrivera comme par une inondation; il est arrêté que les dévastations dureront jusqu'au terme de la guerre.
27 Il fera une solide alliance avec plusieurs pour une semaine, et durant la moitié de la semaine il fera cesser le sacrifice et l'offrande; le dévastateur commettra les choses les plus abominables, jusqu'à ce que la ruine et ce qui a été résolu fondent sur le dévastateur.

Daniel’s prayer
9 In the first year of Darius’ rule—Darius, who was Ahasuerus’ son, a Median by birth and who ruled the Chaldean kingdom— 2 I, Daniel, pondered the scrolls, specifically the number of years that it would take to complete Jerusalem’s desolation according to the Lord’s word to the prophet Jeremiah. It was seventy years. 3 I then turned my face to my Lord God, asking for an answer with prayer and pleading, and with fasting, mourning clothes, and ashes. 4 As I prayed to the Lord my God, I made this confession:
Please, my Lord—you are the great and awesome God, the one who keeps the covenant, and truly faithful to all who love him and keep his commands: 5 We have sinned and done wrong. We have brought guilt on ourselves and rebelled, ignoring your commands and your laws. 6 We haven’t listened to your servants, the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our leaders, our parents, and to all the land’s people. 7 Righteousness belongs to you, my Lord! But we are ashamed this day—we, the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, all Israel whether near or far, in whatever country where you’ve driven them because of their unfaithfulness when they broke faith with you. 8 Lord, we are ashamed—we, our kings, our leaders, and our parents who sinned against you. 9 Compassion and deep forgiveness belong to my Lord, our God, because we rebelled against him. 10 We didn’t listen to the voice of the Lord our God by following the teachings he gave us through his servants, the prophets. 11 All Israel broke your Instruction and turned away, ignoring your voice. Then the curse that was sworn long ago—the one written in the Instruction from Moses, God’s servant—swept over us because we sinned against God. 12 God confirmed the words he spoke against us and against our rulers, bringing great trouble on us. What happened in Jerusalem hasn’t happened anywhere else in the entire world! 13 All this trouble came upon us, exactly as it was written in the Instruction of Moses, but we didn’t try to reconcile with the Lord our God by turning from our wrongdoing or by finding wisdom in your faithfulness. 14 So the Lord oversaw the great trouble and brought it on us, because the Lord our God has been right in every move he’s made, but we haven’t listened to his voice.
15 “But now, my Lord, our God—you who brought your people out of Egypt with a strong hand, making a name for yourself even to this day: We have sinned and done the wrong thing.” 16 My Lord, please! In line with your many righteous acts, please turn your raging anger from Jerusalem, which is your city, your own holy mountain. Because of our sins and the wrongdoing of our parents, both Jerusalem and your people have become a disgrace to all our neighbors.
17 “But now, our God, listen to your servant’s prayer and pleas for help. Shine your face on your ruined sanctuary, for your own sake, my Lord. 18 Open your ears, my God, and listen! Open your eyes and look at our devastation. Look at the city called by your name! We pray our prayers for help to you, not because of any righteous acts of ours but because of your great compassion. 19 My Lord, listen! My Lord, forgive! My Lord, pay attention and act! Don’t delay! My God, do all this for your own sake, because your city and your people are called by your name.
Seventy weeks
20 While I was still speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sins of my people Israel—while I was still praying my prayer for help to the Lord my God about my God’s holy mountain— 21 while I was still speaking this prayer, the man Gabriel approached me at the time of the evening offering. This was the same Gabriel I had seen in my earlier vision. He was weary with exhaustion.[a]
22 He explained as he spoke with me: “Daniel, here’s why I’ve come: to give you insight and understanding. 23 When you began making your requests, a word went out, and I’ve come to tell it to you because you are greatly treasured. So now understand this word and grasp the meaning of this vision! 24 Seventy weeks are appointed for your people and for your holy city to complete the rebellion, to end sins, to cover over wrongdoing, to bring eternal righteousness, to seal up prophetic vision, and to anoint the most holy place.
25 “So you must know and gain wisdom about this: There will be seven weeks from the moment the word went out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until a leader is anointed. And for sixty-two weeks the city will be rebuilt with a courtyard and a moat. But in difficult times, 26 after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one will be eliminated. No one will support him.[b] The army of a future leader will destroy the city and the sanctuary. His[c] end will come in a flood, but devastations will be decreed until the end of the war.[d] 27 For one week, he will make a strong covenant with many people. For a half-week, he will stop both sacrifices and offerings. In their place[e] will be the desolating monstrosities until the decreed destruction sweeps over the devastator.”

Daniel’s Prayer for His People
9 In the first year of Darius, the son of Ahasuerus,[a] from the offspring of the Medes, who became king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans— 2 in the first year of his kingship I, Daniel, observed in the scrolls the number of the years that it was that were to be fulfilled according to the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah the prophet for the devastation of Jerusalem—seventy years.
3 Then I turned my face to the Lord God to seek him by prayer and pleas for mercy,[b] in fasting and in sackcloth and ashes. 4 And I prayed to Yahweh my God, and I made confession and I said, “O Lord, the great and awesome God, keeping the covenant and loyal love with those who love him and with those who keep his commandments, 5 we have sinned and we have done wrong and we acted wickedly and we rebelled and have been turning aside from your commandments and from your ordinances. 6 We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes and our ancestors[c] and to all the people of the land.
7 “Righteousness belongs to you, O Lord,[d] and on us is open shame, just as it is this day to the people of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, those who are near and those who are far off[e] in all the lands to which you have driven them,[f] because of their infidelity which they displayed against you. 8 Yahweh, on us is open shame, on our kings, on our princes, and on our ancestors,[g] because we have sinned against you. 9 Compassion and forgiveness belong to the Lord, our God,[h] for we have rebelled against him, 10 and we have not listened to the voice of Yahweh our God, by following his law which he placed before us[i] by the hand of his servants the prophets.
11 “And all Israel transgressed your law and turned aside so as not to listen to your voice, and so the curse and the oath which was written in the law of Moses, the servant of God, has been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him. 12 And so he has carried out his words which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us, to bring upon us a great calamity which was not done under all of heaven as it was done in Jerusalem. 13 Just as it is written in the law of Moses, all of this calamity has come upon us, and we have not implored[j] the face of Yahweh our God so as to turn from our iniquities and to attend closely to your faithfulness.[k] 14 So Yahweh has kept watch over the[l] calamity, and now he has brought it upon us. Indeed, Yahweh our God is righteous concerning all his works[m] that he has done, but we have not listened to his voice.
15 “And now, Lord our God, who have brought your people out from the land of Egypt with a strong hand, and you have made for yourself a name until this day—we have sinned, we have acted wickedly. 16 Lord, according to all your righteousness, please let your anger and your rage turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain,[n] because through our sins and through the iniquities of our ancestors[o] Jerusalem and your people have become an object of mockery among all of our neighbors.
17 “And now, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy. Shine[p] your face upon your desolate sanctuary for your sake, O Lord.[q] 18 Incline your ear, my God, and listen; open your eyes and look at our desolation and the city that is called by your name, for we are not presenting our pleas for mercy before you[r] because of our righteousness, but rather because of your great compassion. 19 Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, pay heed and act! You must not delay for your sake,[s] my God; because your city and your people are called by your name.”[t]
Gabriel’s Announcement and Presentation of the Seventy Sets of Seven
20 Now I was still speaking and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my plea before[u] Yahweh my God, on behalf of the holy mountain of my God.[v] 21 And I was still speaking in prayer, and the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision previously,[w] in my weariness touched me[x] at the time of the evening offering. 22 And he instructed me and he spoke with me and he said, “Daniel I have now come out[y] to teach you understanding. 23 At the beginning of your pleas for mercy, a word went out, and now I have come to declare[z] it, for you are highly esteemed, and so consider the word and understand the vision.
The Seventy Sets of Seven Detailed
24 “Seventy weeks is decreed for your people and for your holy city,[aa] to put an end to the transgression and to seal up sin[ab] and to make atonement for guilt and to bring in everlasting righteousness and to seal vision and prophet and to anoint the most holy place.[ac] 25 And you must know and you must understand[ad] that from the time of the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem until an anointed[ae] one—a leader—will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;[af] it will be restored and will be built with streets and a moat, but in a time of oppression.[ag]
26 “And after the sixty and two weeks an anointed one[ah] shall be cut off, and he shall have nothing,[ai] and the people of the coming leader will destroy the city and the sanctuary,[aj] and its end will be with the flood and on to the end there shall be war; these desolations are determined. 27 And he will make a strong covenant with the many for one week, but in half of the week he will let cease sacrifice and offering and in its place[ak] a desolating abomination comes even until the determined complete destruction[al] is poured out on the desolator.”
