8 «En el tercer año del reinado de Belsasar yo, Daniel, tuve una visión, después de la que ya había tenido. 2 En ella me veía en la ciudad de Susa, en la provincia de Elam, junto al río Ulay. 3 Me fijé y vi ante mí un carnero con sus dos cuernos. Estaba junto al río y tenía cuernos largos. Uno de ellos era más largo y le había salido después. 4 Me quedé observando cómo el carnero atacaba hacia el oeste, hacia el norte y hacia el sur. Ningún animal podía hacerle frente ni había tampoco quien pudiera librarse de su poder. El carnero hacía lo que quería y cada vez cobraba más fuerza.
5 »Mientras reflexionaba yo al respecto, de pronto, surgió del oeste un macho cabrío, que tenía un cuerno enorme entre los ojos. Cruzó toda la tierra sin tocar siquiera el suelo. 6 Luego se lanzó contra el carnero de los dos cuernos que yo había visto de pie junto al río y lo atacó furiosamente. 7 Yo vi cómo se acercó enfurecido, lo golpeó y le rompió los dos cuernos. El carnero no pudo hacerle frente, pues el macho cabrío lo derribó y lo pisoteó. Nadie pudo librar al carnero del poder del macho cabrío. 8 El macho cabrío cobró gran fuerza, pero en el momento de su mayor grandeza se le rompió el gran cuerno. En su lugar brotaron cuatro grandes cuernos que se alzaron contra los cuatro vientos del cielo.
9 »De uno de ellos salió otro cuerno, pequeño al principio, que extendió su poder hacia el sur, hacia el este y hacia la Tierra Hermosa. 10 Creció hasta alcanzar al ejército de los cielos e hizo caer a tierra algunos del ejército de las estrellas y los pisoteó. 11 Y creció hasta pretender ser tan grande como el comandante del ejército del Señor. Por su causa, se eliminó el sacrificio diario y se derribó el santuario. 12 Por la rebelión, le fueron entregados el ejército y el sacrificio diario; derribó la verdad, hizo cuanto quiso y en todo tuvo éxito.
13 »Escuché entonces que uno de los santos hablaba y que otro le preguntaba: “¿Cuánto tiempo va a tardar lo anunciado en esta visión: el sacrificio diario, la rebeldía desoladora, la entrega del santuario y la humillación del ejército?”.
14 »Y aquel santo me dijo: “Va a tardar dos mil trescientas tardes y mañanas. Después de eso, se purificará el santuario”.

15 »Mientras yo, Daniel, contemplaba la visión y trataba de entenderla, de repente apareció ante mí alguien de apariencia humana. 16 Escuché entonces una voz que desde el río Ulay gritaba: “¡Gabriel, dile a este hombre lo que significa la visión!”.
17 »Cuando él se acercó al lugar donde estaba, me aterroricé y caí rostro en tierra. Me dijo: “Hijo de hombre entiende que la visión se refiere al tiempo del fin”.
18 »Mientras me hablaba, yo estaba aturdido, con el rostro en tierra. Entonces me tocó y me puso de pie. 19 Y me dijo: “Voy a darte a conocer lo que sucederá después cuando llegue a su fin el tiempo de la ira de Dios, porque el fin llegará en el momento señalado. 20 El carnero de dos cuernos que has visto simboliza a los reyes de Media y de Persia. 21 El macho cabrío es el rey de Grecia y el cuerno grande que tiene entre los ojos es el primer rey. 22 Los cuatro cuernos que salieron en lugar del que fue hecho pedazos simbolizan a los cuatro reinos que surgirán de esa nación, pero que no tendrán el mismo poder.
23 »”Hacia el final de esos reinos, cuando la rebelión de los impíos llegue al colmo, surgirá un rey de aspecto feroz, maestro de la intriga, 24 que llegará a tener mucho poder, pero no por sí mismo. Ese rey causará impresionantes destrozos y saldrá airoso en todo lo que emprenda. Destruirá a los poderosos y al pueblo santo. 25 Con su astucia propagará el engaño, creyéndose un ser superior. Destruirá a mucha gente que creía estar segura, y se enfrentará al Príncipe de los príncipes, pero será destruido sin intervención humana.
26 »”La visión de las tardes y mañanas que se te ha dado a conocer es verdadera. Pero mantenla en secreto, pues para eso falta mucho tiempo”.
27 »Yo, Daniel, quedé exhausto y estuve enfermo durante varios días. Luego me levanté para seguir atendiendo los asuntos del reino. Pero la visión me dejó pasmado, pues no lograba comprenderla».

8 »Además de este sueño que ya he contado, yo, Daniel, volví a tener otro sueño. Esto sucedió cuando Belsasar llevaba tres años de reinar. 2 En ese sueño me parecía estar junto al río Ulai, en la ciudad de Susa. Esta ciudad es la capital del reino, y se encuentra en la región conocida como Elam.
3 »En el sueño veía yo, a lo lejos, un carnero parado junto al río. Ese carnero tenía dos cuernos largos, pero uno era más largo que el otro y le había salido después. 4 El carnero atacaba hacia el norte, hacia el sur y hacia el oeste. Pude ver que ningún otro animal podía hacerle frente, ni tampoco se libraba de sus golpes. El carnero hacía lo que quería, y cada vez se volvía más fuerte.
5 »Mientras yo pensaba en lo que había visto, vi que del oeste venía un chivo. Tenía un cuerno muy grande entre los dos ojos, y corría con tanta rapidez que parecía que volaba. 6 Cuando el chivo estuvo cerca del carnero de dos cuernos, lo atacó con todas sus fuerzas 7 y le rompió sus dos cuernos. El carnero no tuvo fuerzas para defenderse, así que el chivo lo tiró al suelo y lo pisoteó. Y nadie pudo salvarlo.
8 »El chivo se iba haciendo más y más fuerte. Pero en su momento de mayor fuerza, el cuerno más grande se le rompió. En lugar de ese gran cuerno, le salieron otros cuatro cuernos. Uno de ellos apuntaba hacia el norte, otro hacia el sur, otro hacia el este y otro hacia el oeste. 9 A uno de los cuernos le salió otro cuerno pequeño. Y ese cuerno creció mucho, y se extendió hacia el sur, hacia el oeste y hacia la tierra más hermosa. 10 Fue tanto lo que creció, que llegó a tocar las estrellas del cielo. A muchas de ellas las derribó y las pisoteó.
11 »Este cuerno pequeño se atrevió también a desafiar al jefe mismo de las estrellas. Para colmo, prohibió que se presentaran a Dios las ofrendas diarias y se burló del templo. 12 Era tanta su maldad, que ordenó que su ejército acampara en donde todos los días se presentaban las ofrendas; luego echó por los suelos la verdad y comenzó a hacer todo lo que quiso. ¡Y todo le salió bien!
13 »Poco después oí que un ángel le decía a otro ángel: “Esto que estamos viendo, pasa todos los días en el altar de las ofrendas. ¿Cuándo terminará? ¿Hasta cuándo va a permitir Dios que sigan pecando así en el templo? ¿Hasta cuándo va a permitir que sigan maltratando a los creyentes?”
14 »Y el otro ángel contestó: “Hasta que hayan pasado mil ciento cincuenta días, que es un poco más de tres años. Pasado ese tiempo, el templo quedará limpio”.
15 »Mientras yo veía todo esto, y trataba de entenderlo, se apareció ante mí alguien que parecía un hombre. 16 Entonces escuché la voz de alguien que venía del río Ulai. Esa voz decía: “Gabriel, explícale a este hombre lo que significa el sueño”.
17 »Cuando Gabriel se me acercó, yo me asusté tanto que me arrojé al suelo. Pero él me dijo: “Lo que has visto, se hará realidad cuando llegue el fin del mundo”.
18 »Mientras Gabriel me decía esto, yo perdí el sentido y me quedé tirado en el suelo. Pero él vino en mi ayuda y me levantó. 19 Luego me dijo:
“Ahora voy a decirte lo que pasará cuando llegue el fin del mundo. Cuando eso suceda, Dios estará muy enojado con la gente. 20 Tú viste un carnero con dos cuernos. Esos dos cuernos son los reyes de Media y de Persia. 21 El chivo es el rey de Grecia, y el cuerno grande que le salió entre los ojos es el más importante de todos sus reyes. 22 Los cuatro cuernos que salieron cuando se rompió el primero son los cuatro reinos que saldrán de esta nación. Pero esos reinos no tendrán tanto poder como el primero.
23 ”Cuando llegue a su fin
el poder de estos reinos,
y ya nadie soporte su maldad,
vendrá un rey egoísta y orgulloso.
24 Ese rey se irá haciendo
más y más poderoso,
aunque no por sus propias fuerzas.
Le irá bien en todo lo que haga,
pero causará muchos destrozos.
Destruirá a gente poderosa,
y también al pueblo de Dios.
25 Será un rey muy astuto,
y engañará a mucha gente.
Se creerá el rey más importante,
y matará a traición
a gente que vivía tranquila.
Se levantará en armas
contra el Príncipe de príncipes,
pero saldrá derrotado.
26 ”Ya te he explicado lo que viste acerca de los tres años y días. Eso va a suceder así. Pero tú no se lo digas a nadie, porque se hará realidad después de mucho tiempo”.
27 »Yo, Daniel, perdí las fuerzas y estuve muy enfermo durante varios días. Pero finalmente me levanté y seguí ocupándome de los asuntos del rey. Sin embargo, seguí preocupado porque no entendía bien todo lo que había visto».

8 In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, I had another dream similar to the first.
2 This time I was at Susa,[a] the capital in the province of Elam, standing beside the Ulai River. 3 As I was looking around, I saw a ram with two long horns standing on the riverbank; and as I watched, one of these horns began to grow, so that it was longer than the other. 4 The ram butted everything out of its way, and no one could stand against it or help its victims. It did as it pleased and became very great.
5 While I was wondering what this could mean, suddenly a buck goat appeared from the west so swiftly that it didn’t even touch the ground. This goat, which had one very large horn between its eyes, 6 rushed furiously at the two-horned ram. 7 And the closer he came, the angrier he was. He charged into the ram and broke off both his horns. Now the ram was helpless, and the buck goat knocked him down and trampled him, for there was no one to rescue him.
8 The victor became both proud and powerful, but suddenly, at the height of his power, his horn was broken, and in its place grew four good-sized horns[b] pointing in four directions. 9 One of these, growing slowly at first, soon became very strong and attacked the south and east, and warred against the land of Israel.[c] 10 He fought against the people of God and defeated some of their leaders.[d] 11 He even challenged the Commander[e] of the army of heaven by canceling the daily sacrifices offered to him and by defiling his Temple. 12 But the army of heaven was restrained from destroying him for this transgression. As a result, truth and righteousness perished, and evil triumphed and prospered.[f]
13 Then I heard two of the holy angels talking to each other. One of them said, “How long will it be until the daily sacrifice is restored again? How long until the destruction of the Temple is avenged and God’s people triumph?”
14 The other replied, “Twenty-three hundred days[g] must first go by.”
15 As I was trying to understand the meaning of this vision, suddenly a man was standing in front of me—or at least he looked like a man— 16 and I heard a man’s voice calling from across the river, “Gabriel, tell Daniel the meaning of his dream.”
17 So Gabriel started toward me. But as he approached, I was too frightened to stand and fell down with my face to the ground. “Son of man,” he said, “you must understand that the events you have seen in your vision will not take place until the end times come.”
18 Then I fainted, lying face downward on the ground. But he roused me with a touch and helped me to my feet. 19 “I am here,” he said, “to tell you what is going to happen in the last days of the coming time of terror—for what you have seen pertains to that final event in history.
20 “The two horns of the ram you saw are the kings of Media and Persia; 21 the shaggy-haired goat is the nation of Greece, and its long horn represents the first great king of that country. 22 When you saw the horn break off and four smaller horns replace it, this meant that the Grecian Empire will break into four sections with four kings, none of them as great as the first.
23 “Toward the end of their kingdoms, when they have become morally rotten, an angry king shall rise to power with great shrewdness and intelligence.[h] 24 His power shall be mighty, but it will be satanic strength and not his own.[i] Prospering wherever he turns, he will destroy all who oppose him, though their armies be mighty, and he will devastate God’s people.
25 “He will be a master of deception, defeating many by catching them off guard as they bask in false security. Without warning he will destroy them. So great will he fancy himself to be that he will even take on the Prince of Princes in battle; but in so doing he will seal his own doom, for he shall be broken by the hand of God, though no human means could overpower him.
26 “And then in your vision you heard about the twenty-three hundred days to pass before the rights of worship are restored. This number is literal, and means just that.[j] But none of these things will happen for a long time, so don’t tell anyone about them yet.”
27 Then I grew faint and was sick for several days. Afterward I was up and around again and performed my duties for the king, but I was greatly distressed by the dream and did not understand it.

- Daniel 8:8 in its place grew four good-sized horns. The four principal successors of Alexander the Great were Ptolemy I of Egypt, Seleucus of Babylonia, Antigonus of Syria and Asia Minor, and Antipater of Macedonia and Greece.
- Daniel 8:9 the land of Israel, literally, “the glorious land.” Israel was attacked by Antiochus IV Epiphanes, with a further fulfillment of this prophecy indicated for the future; see vv. 17, 19, 23.
- Daniel 8:10 the people of God and . . . some of their leaders, literally, “host of heaven . . . the starry host”; see 8:24.
- Daniel 8:11 the Commander, compare Joshua 5:13-15.
- Daniel 8:12 truth and righteousness perished, and evil triumphed and prospered, or “and great indignities were perpetrated against the Temple ceremonies, so truth and righteousness perished.” The Hebrew text is obscure.
- Daniel 8:14 Twenty-three hundred days, literally, “Twenty-three hundred mornings and evenings.”
- Daniel 8:23 with great shrewdness and intelligence, literally, “who understands riddles”; an alternate rendering might read, “skilled in intrigues.” Probably a reference to Antiochus Epiphanes and further future fulfillment by the Antichrist at the end of human history.
- Daniel 8:24 but it will be satanic strength and not his own, implied; literally, “but not with his power.”
- Daniel 8:26 This number is literal, and means just that, literally, “The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true.” Verse 14 is the basis for the meaning expressed in the paraphrase.
