Vision du bélier et du bouc
8 La troisième année de règne de Belshatsar, moi, Daniel, j'ai eu une vision, après la première que j'avais eue. 2 Dans cette vision, j’ai vu que je me trouvais à Suse, la capitale, dans la province d'Elam. Dans la vision, j’ai vu que j’étais près du fleuve Oulaï.
3 J’ai levé les yeux et regardé: un bélier se tenait devant le fleuve et il avait des cornes. Ces cornes étaient hautes. L'une était plus haute que l'autre, mais c’était la plus haute qui avait poussé la dernière. 4 J’ai vu le bélier frapper avec ses cornes vers l'ouest, le nord et le sud. Aucun animal ne pouvait lui résister et il n'y avait personne pour délivrer ses victimes de son pouvoir. Il faisait ce qu'il voulait et il est devenu grand.
5 Pendant que je regardais attentivement, un bouc est arrivé de l'ouest, parcourant toute la surface de la terre sans toucher la terre. Ce bouc avait une corne impressionnante entre les yeux. 6 Il est arrivé jusqu'au bélier qui avait des cornes et que j'avais vu se tenir devant le fleuve, et il a foncé sur lui dans toute l’ardeur de sa force. 7 Je l’ai vu s'approcher du bélier et manifester son amertume contre lui: il a frappé le bélier et lui a brisé les deux cornes sans que le bélier n’ait la force de lui résister. Il l’a jeté par terre et l’a piétiné, et il n'y a eu personne pour délivrer le bélier de son pouvoir. 8 Le bouc est devenu très grand mais, lorsqu'il a été puissant, sa grande corne s’est brisée. Quatre grandes cornes ont poussé à sa place, aux quatre coins du ciel.
9 De l'une d'elles est sortie une petite corne. Elle a beaucoup grandi vers le sud, vers l'est et vers le plus beau des pays. 10 Elle a grandi jusqu'au niveau des corps célestes. Elle a fait tomber par terre une partie de ces corps et des étoiles, et elle les a piétinés. 11 Elle a grandi jusqu'au niveau du chef de l'armée. Elle lui a enlevé le sacrifice perpétuel et a bouleversé les fondations de son sanctuaire. 12 L'armée lui a été livrée avec le sacrifice perpétuel, à cause de la transgression. La corne a jeté la vérité par terre et réussi dans ses entreprises. 13 J'ai entendu un saint parler et un autre saint dire à celui qui parlait: «Jusqu’à quand durera cette vision à propos du sacrifice perpétuel et de la transgression dévastatrice? Jusqu'à quand le sanctuaire et l'armée seront-ils livrés au piétinement?» 14 Et il m’a dit: «Encore 2300 soirs et matins, puis le sanctuaire sera purifié.»
15 Tandis que moi, Daniel, j'avais cette vision et que je cherchais à la comprendre, quelqu'un qui avait l'apparence d'un guerrier se tenait en face de moi. 16 J'ai entendu la voix d'un homme au milieu du fleuve Oulaï; il a crié: «Gabriel, fais comprendre à celui-ci ce qu’il a vu!» 17 Il est alors venu près de l'endroit où je me trouvais. Terrifié à son approche, je suis tombé le visage contre terre. Il m’a dit: «Sois attentif, fils de l'homme, car la vision concerne le moment de la fin.» 18 Pendant qu’il me parlait, j’étais plongé dans une profonde torpeur, le visage contre terre. Il m’a touché et m’a fait me tenir debout là où je me trouvais. 19 Puis il m’a dit: «Je vais te faire connaître ce qui arrivera au terme de la colère, car il y a un moment fixé pour la fin. 20 Le bélier que tu as vu et qui avait des cornes, ce sont les rois des Mèdes et des Perses. 21 Le bouc, c'est le roi de Grèce. La grande corne entre ses yeux, c'est le premier roi. 22 Les quatre cornes qui l’ont remplacée, une fois qu’elle a été brisée, ce sont quatre royaumes qui surgiront de cette nation, mais sans avoir autant de force qu’elle. 23 A la fin de leur règne, quand les pécheurs auront mis le comble à leur révolte, un roi au visage dur et expert en énigmes surgira. 24 Sa puissance grandira, mais non par sa propre force. Il accomplira d'extraordinaires dévastations, il réussira dans ses entreprises, il détruira les puissants et le peuple des saints. 25 Grâce à son habileté, il réussira dans ses manœuvres trompeuses, et il aura le cœur rempli d'arrogance. Il fera mourir beaucoup d'hommes qui vivaient dans la tranquillité et il se dressera contre le prince des princes. Cependant, il sera brisé sans aucune intervention extérieure. 26 Ce que tu as vu à propos des soirs et des matins et qui t’a été dit est vrai. Quant à toi, tiens cette vision cachée, car elle concerne une époque éloignée.»
27 Moi, Daniel, je suis resté affaibli et malade durant plusieurs jours. Puis je me suis levé pour m'occuper des affaires du roi, mais j'étais effaré à cause de la vision et je ne la comprenais pas.

8 In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first.
2 And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai.
3 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.
4 I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.
5 And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.
6 And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the fury of his power.
7 And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.
8 Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.
9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.
10 And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.
11 Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of the sanctuary was cast down.
12 And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.
13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?
14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.
15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.
16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.
17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.
18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.
19 And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.
20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.
21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.
22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.
23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.
24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.
25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.
26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.
27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.

Coarnele acestea erau lungi, dar unul era mai lung decât celălalt, cel lung crescând la urmă. 4 Am văzut cum berbecul împungea spre apus, spre nord şi spre sud. Nici un animal nu-i putea sta împotrivă şi nimeni nu putea scăpa de sub puterea lui. El făcea ce voia şi a ajuns puternic.
5 În timp ce căutam să înţeleg aceste lucruri, iată că a venit un ţap din apus, străbătând toată suprafaţa pământului, fără să atingă însă pământul. Ţapul avea un corn impunător între ochi. 6 A venit până la berbecul care avea două coarne, pe care l-am văzut stând lângă râu, şi s-a năpustit asupra lui cu o furie năprasnică. 7 L-am văzut cum s-a apropiat de berbec şi s-a întărâtat împotriva lui. Apoi a izbit berbecul şi i-a rupt cele două coarne, fără ca berbecul să fi avut putere să i se împotrivească. L-a trântit la pământ şi l-a călcat în picioare; şi nu a fost nimeni care să-l poată scăpa pe berbec de sub puterea ţapului.
8 Ţapul a continuat să crească în putere, dar, când a ajuns la culmea puterii sale, cornul cel mare i s-a rupt. În locul lui au ieşit alte patru coarne, impunătoare, înspre cele patru vânturi ale cerului.
9 Dintr-unul din ele a ieşit un corn mai mic, care a crescut peste măsură de mult spre sud, spre răsărit şi spre ţara cea minunată. 10 S-a înălţat până la oştirea cerurilor, a aruncat la pământ o parte din oştire şi din stele[b] şi le-a călcat în picioare. 11 S-a înălţat până la[c] Căpetenia oştirii şi i-a luat jertfa continuă, iar locul Sanctuarului Lui a fost dărâmat[d]. 12 Oştirea şi jertfa continuă au fost date pe mâna lui din pricina nelegiuirii.[e] Cornul a aruncat adevărul la pământ şi a reuşit în ceea ce a făcut.
13 Atunci am auzit un sfânt vorbind şi un alt sfânt întrebându-l pe cel ce vorbea: „În cât timp se va împlini viziunea despre jertfa continuă, despre nelegiuirea[f] care a adus pustiire şi despre călcarea în picioare a Sfântului Lăcaş şi a oştirii?“ 14 El mi-a dat mie răspunsul: „Până vor trece două mii trei sute de seri şi dimineţi[g]; apoi Sfântul Lăcaş va fi curăţit.“
Interpretarea viziunii
15 În timp ce eu, Daniel, aveam viziunea aceasta şi căutam s-o înţeleg, iată că cineva, care era la înfăţişare ca un om, a apărut stând în picioare în faţa mea. 16 Am auzit un glas de om venind din mijlocul râului Ulai care striga şi zicea astfel: „Gabriele[h], fă-l să înţeleagă această viziune!“ 17 Când a venit lângă locul unde eram, m-am înspăimântat şi am căzut cu faţa la pământ. El mi-a zis: „Înţelege, fiul omului, că viziunea este cu privire la vremea sfârşitului!“
18 Când mi-a vorbit, am căzut leşinat[i] cu faţa la pământ. El m-a atins şi m-a ridicat iarăşi în picioare în locul unde mă aflam.
19 Apoi mi-a zis astfel: „Iată, îţi voi spune ce se va întâmpla în vremea de apoi a mâniei, căci viziunea se referă la vremea hotărâtă sfârşitului[j]. 20 Berbecul pe care l-ai văzut, cu cele două coarne, îi înfăţişează pe împăraţii Mediei şi Persiei.[k] 21 Ţapul cel aprig este împăratul Greciei[l]. Cornul cel mare, care era între ochii lui, este primul împărat.[m] 22 Faptul că acest corn a fost frânt şi că în locul lui s-au ridicat altele patru înseamnă că din neamul aceasta se vor ridica patru împărăţii, dar nu vor avea puterea ei.[n]
23 La sfârşitul domniei lor,
când păcatele răzvrătiţilor vor fi la culme,
se va ridica un împărat semeţ[o]
şi iscusit în uneltiri.
24 El va fi puternic, dar nu prin propria-i putere;
va face pustiiri de necrezut
şi va reuşi în ceea ce va face.
Îi va nimici pe cei puternici
şi pe poporul sfinţilor.
25 Datorită vicleniei lui,
va face înşelăciunea să biruiască prin mâna lui
şi apoi se va mândri în inima lui.
Va distruge pe mulţi care se credeau în siguranţă
şi va sta chiar împotriva[p] Căpeteniei căpeteniilor,
dar va fi zdrobit, fără ajutorul vreunei mâini omeneşti.
26 Cât despre viziunea cu serile şi dimineţile,
care ţi s-a spus, ea este adevărată.
Tu însă tăinuieşte viziunea,

8 In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar, a vision appeared to me, even to me, Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first. 2 I saw the vision. Now it was so, that when I saw, I was in the citadel of Susa, which is in the province of Elam. I saw in the vision, and I was by the river Ulai. 3 Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, a ram which had two horns stood before the river. The two horns were high, but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. 4 I saw the ram pushing westward, northward, and southward. No animals could stand before him. There wasn’t any who could deliver out of his hand, but he did according to his will, and magnified himself.
5 As I was considering, behold, a male goat came from the west over the surface of the whole earth, and didn’t touch the ground. The goat had a notable horn between his eyes. 6 He came to the ram that had the two horns, which I saw standing before the river, and ran on him in the fury of his power. 7 I saw him come close to the ram, and he was moved with anger against him, and struck the ram, and broke his two horns. There was no power in the ram to stand before him; but he cast him down to the ground and trampled on him. There was no one who could deliver the ram out of his hand. 8 The male goat magnified himself exceedingly. When he was strong, the great horn was broken; and instead of it there came up four notable horns toward the four winds of the sky.
9 Out of one of them came out a little horn which grew exceedingly great—toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the glorious land. 10 It grew great, even to the army of the sky; and it cast down some of the army and of the stars to the ground and trampled on them. 11 Yes, it magnified itself, even to the prince of the army; and it took away from him the continual burnt offering, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. 12 The army was given over to it together with the continual burnt offering through disobedience. It cast down truth to the ground, and it did its pleasure and prospered.
13 Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said to that certain one who spoke, “How long will the vision about the continual burnt offering, and the disobedience that makes desolate, to give both the sanctuary and the army to be trodden under foot be?”
14 He said to me, “To two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary will be cleansed.”
15 When I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it. Then behold, there stood before me someone with the appearance of a man. 16 I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, which called and said, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.”
17 So he came near where I stood; and when he came, I was frightened, and fell on my face; but he said to me, “Understand, son of man, for the vision belongs to the time of the end.”
18 Now as he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face toward the ground; but he touched me and set me upright.
19 He said, “Behold, I will make you know what will be in the latter time of the indignation, for it belongs to the appointed time of the end. 20 The ram which you saw, that had the two horns, they are the kings of Media and Persia. 21 The rough male goat is the king of Greece. The great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. 22 As for that which was broken, in the place where four stood up, four kingdoms will stand up out of the nation, but not with his power.
23 “In the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors have come to the full, a king of fierce face, and understanding riddles, will stand up. 24 His power will be mighty, but not by his own power. He will destroy awesomely, and will prosper in what he does. He will destroy the mighty ones and the holy people. 25 Through his policy he will cause deceit to prosper in his hand. He will magnify himself in his heart, and he will destroy many in their security. He will also stand up against the prince of princes, but he will be broken without human hands.
26 “The vision of the evenings and mornings which has been told is true; but seal up the vision, for it belongs to many days to come.”
27 I, Daniel, fainted, and was sick for some days. Then I rose up and did the king’s business. I wondered at the vision, but no one understood it.
