In the shnat shalosh (third year) of the reign of Belshatzar HaMelech, a chazon (vision) appeared unto me, Daniel, after that which appeared unto me in the beginning.

And I beheld in a chazon; and it came to pass, while I was seeing, that I was in Shushan (Susa) the fortress, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a chazon, and I was by the stream Ulai.

Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, hinei, there stood before the stream a ram which had two karnayim (horns), and the two karnayim were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher was coming up last.

I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no chayyot (beasts) might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and made a great display of strength.

And as I was considering, hinei, a he-goat was coming from the west on the face of kol ha’aretz, and it was not touching the earth; and as to the goat it had a conspicuous keren (horn) between its eyes.

And he came to the ram that had two karnayim, which I had seen standing before the stream, and he ran against him with the wrath of his koach (strength).

And I saw him approaching the ram, and he was enraged against him, and he smote the ram, broke his two karnayim, and there was no koach in the ram to stand before him, and he cast him down to the ground, and trampled him; there was none to deliver the ram from him.

Therefore the he-goat was acting very presumptuously; and when he was powerful, the keren hagedolah (great horn, [i.e., Alexander’s Empire]) was broken; and in the place of it came up conspicuously four, toward the arbah ruchot HaShomayim (the four winds of Heaven).

And out of one of them came forth a little horn [Antiochus Epiphanes], which became exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the [eretz] hatzevi (the glorious land, [i.e., Eretz Israel]).

10 And it became great, even unto the tzva HaShomayim; and it caused to fall down to the earth some of the host and some of the kokhavim it trampled.

11 Yea, he magnified himself even unto the Sar HaTzava, and the daily sacrifice was taken away from Him, and the place of His Mikdash was cast down.

12 And a tzva (army) was given over to oppose the daily sacrifice on account of peysha (transgression, rebellion), and it cast down emes to the ground; and it acted, and prospered.

13 Then I heard one kadosh (angel) speaking, and another kadosh said unto that certain kadosh which spoke, How long shall be the chazon concerning the daily sacrifice, and the desolating peysha (transgression), to give both the Kodesh (Sanctuary) and the tzva (host) to be trodden under foot?

14 And he said unto me, Unto erev-boker two thousand and three hundred; then shall the Kodesh (Sanctuary) be vindicated.

15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, was beholding the chazon, that I sought the meaning; then, hinei, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.

16 And I heard a kol adam (man’s voice) amidst the Ulai, and he called, and said, Gavriel, cause this one to understand the vision [see Daniel 9:21].

17 So he came near where I stood; and as he came, I was filled with fear, and I fell down upon my face, but he said unto me, Understand, O ben adam, the chazon (vision) points to the time of the ketz (end).

18 Now while he was speaking with me, I swooned upon my face toward the ground, but he touched me, and made me stand upright.

19 And he said, Hineni, I will cause thee to know that which shall take place in the latter part of HaZa’am (the Wrath period), since at a mo’ed (an appointed time) the Ketz (End) shall be.

20 The ram which thou sawest having two karnayim are the melachim of Media and Paras (Persia).

21 And the shaggy he-goat is melech Yavan (the king of Greece), and the keren hagedolah (great horn) that is between his eyes is the melech harishon (the first king [ i.e., Alexander]).

22 Now one being broken and four stood up in its place, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in its koach (strength).

23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when haposhe’im (the transgressors, the ones rebelling) are come to the full, a melech of unyielding countenance, and mastering intrigues, shall stand up.

24 And his koach shall be mighty, but not by his own koach; and he shall cause astounding destruction, and shall prosper, and accomplish, and shall destroy the mighty and Am Kedoshim (the Holy People).

25 And by his cunning also he shall cause mirmah (deceit) to prosper through his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his lev, and by peace shall destroy rabbim (many); he shall also stand up against the Sar Sarim (Prince of Princes); but he shall be broken without [human] hand.

26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is emes; and thou! Shut up the chazon; for it shall be for many yamim [i.e., distant times].

27 And I Daniel was faint, and lay ill several yamim; afterward I rose up, and did the king’s business; and I was astonished at the vision, but without understanding it.

After that first vision, it was in the third year of the reign of King Belshatzar that another vision appeared to me, Dani’el. I looked into the vision; and as I looked, I found myself in Shushan the capital, in the province of ‘Eilam. I looked into the vision, and I was by the Ulai canal. I looked up; and as I watched, there in front of the stream stood a ram with two horns. The horns were long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one came up later [than the other]. I saw the ram pushing to the west, north and south; and no animals could stand up against it; nor was there anyone that could rescue from its power. So it did as it pleased and became very strong.

I was beginning to understand, when a male goat came from the west, passing over the whole earth without touching the ground. The goat had a prominent horn between its eyes. It approached the ram with the two horns, which I had seen standing in front of the river, and charged it with savage force. I watched as it advanced on the ram, filled with rage against it, and struck the ram, breaking its two horns. The ram was powerless to stand against it. It threw the ram to the ground and trampled it down, and there was no one that could rescue it from the goat’s power. The male goat then became extremely strong; but when it was strong, the big horn was broken; and in its place arose what appeared to be four horns in the directions of the four winds of heaven. Out of one of them came a little horn which grew extremely big in the directions of the south and east, and in the direction of the Glory. 10 It grew so great that it reached the army of heaven; it hurled some of the army and the stars to the ground and trampled on them. 11 Yes, it even considered itself as great as the prince of the army; the regular burnt offering was taken away from him, and the place of his sanctuary was thrown down. 12 Through sin, the army was put in its power, along with the regular burnt offering. It flung truth on the ground as it acted and prospered.

13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the speaker, “How long will the events of the vision last, this vision concerning the regular offering and the transgression which is so appalling, that allows the sanctuary and the army to be trampled underfoot?” 14 The first said to me, “Two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings, after which the sanctuary will be restored to its rightful state.”

15 After I, Dani’el, had seen the vision and was trying to understand it, suddenly there stood in front of me someone who appeared to be a man. 16 I heard a human voice calling from between the banks of the Ulai, “Gavri’el, make this man understand the vision!” 17 He came up to where I was standing, and his approach so terrified me that I fell on my face. But he said to me, “Human being! Understand that the vision refers to the time of the end.” 18 As he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep, with my face toward the ground; but he touched me, set me on my feet, 19 and said, “I am going to explain to you what will happen at the end of the period of fury, because [the vision] has to do with the time at the end. 20 You saw a ram with two horns which are the kings of Media and Persia. 21 The shaggy male goat is the king of Greece, and the prominent horn between its eyes is the first king. 22 As for the horn that broke and the four which rose up in its place, four kingdoms will arise out of this nation, but not with the power the first king had. 23 In the latter part of their reign, when the evildoers have become as evil as possible, there will arise an arrogant king skilled in intrigue. 24 His power will be great, but not with the power the first king had. He will be amazingly destructive, he will succeed in whatever he does, and he will destroy the mighty and the holy ones. 25 He will succeed through craftiness and deceit, become swelled with pride, and destroy many people just when they feel the most secure. He will even challenge the prince of princes; but, without human intervention, he will be broken. 26 The vision of the evenings and mornings which has been told is true; but you are to keep the vision secret, because it is about days in the distant future.”

27 I, Dani’el, grew weak and was ill for some days. Then I got up and took care of the king’s affairs; but I was appalled at the vision and still couldn’t understand it.

Nel terzo anno di regno del re Belshatsar, io, Daniele, ebbi una visione, dopo quella avuta all'inizio del regno.

Or vidi in visione e, mentre guardavo, mi avvenne di trovarmi nella cittadella di Susa, che è nella provincia di Elam, nella visione mi resi conto di essere presso il fiume Ulai.

Alzai gli occhi e guardai, ed ecco, in piedi davanti al fiume un montone che aveva due corna; le due corna erano alte ma un corno era piú alto dell'altro, anche se il piú alto era spuntato per ultimo.

Vidi il montone che cozzava a ovest a nord e a sud; nessuna bestia gli poteva resistere, né alcuno poteva liberare dal suo potere; cosí fece quel che volle e diventò grande.

Mentre consideravo questo ecco venire dall'ovest un capro, che percorreva tutta la superficie della terra senza toccare il suolo, il capro aveva un corno cospicuo fra i suoi occhi.

Giunse fino al montone dalle due corna, che avevo visto in piedi davanti al fiume, e gli si avventò contro nel furore della sua forza.

Lo vidi avvicinarsi e montare in collera contro di lui, cozzò quindi contro il montone e frantumò le sue due corna, senza che il montone avesse forza per resistergli; cosí lo gettò a terra e lo calpestò, e nessuno potè liberare il montone dal suo potere.

Il capro diventò molto grande; ma, quando fu potente, il suo gran corno si spezzò, al suo posto spuntarono quattro corna cospicue, verso i quattro venti del cielo.

Da uno di questi uscí un piccolo corno, che diventò molto grande verso sud, verso est e verso il paese glorioso.

10 Si ingrandí fino a giungere all'esercito del cielo, fece cadere in terra parte dell'esercito e delle stelle e le calpestò.

11 Si innalzò addirittura fino al capo dell'esercito, gli tolse il sacrificio continuo e il luogo del suo santuario fu abbattuto.

12 L'esercito gli fu dato in mano assieme al sacrificio continuo, a motivo della trasgressione; egli gettò a terra la verità; fece tutto questo e prosperò.

13 Poi udii un santo che parlava, e un altro santo disse a quello che parlava: «Fino a quando durerà la visione del sacrificio continuo e la trasgressione della desolazione, che abbandona il luogo santo e l'esercito ad essere calpestati?».

14 Egli mi disse: «Fino a duemilatrecento giorni; poi il santuario sarà purificato».

15 Ora, mentre io, Daniele, consideravo la visione e cercavo d'intenderla ecco stare davanti a me uno dall'aspetto di uomo.

16 Udii quindi in mezzo al fiume Ulai la voce di un uomo, che gridava e diceva: «Gabriele, spiega a costui la visione».

17 Egli si avvicinò al luogo dove mi trovavo e, quando giunse, io ebbi paura e caddi sulla mia faccia. Ma egli mi disse: «Intendi bene, o figlio d'uomo, perché questa visione riguarda il tempo della fine».

18 Mentre egli parlava con me, caddi in un profondo sonno con la faccia terra, ma egli mi toccò e mi fece alzare in piedi nel luogo dove mi trovavo.

19 E disse: «Ecco, io ti faccio conoscere ciò che avverrà nell'ultimo tempo dell'indignazione, perché riguarda il tempo fissato della fine.

20 Il montone con due corna, che tu hai visto, rappresenta i re di Media e di Persia.

21 Il capro peloso è il re di Javan; e il gran corno che era in mezzo ai suoi occhi è il primo re.

22 Il corno spezzato e le quattro corna che sono sorte al suo posto sono quattro regni che sorgeranno da questa nazione, ma non con la stessa sua potenza.

23 Alla fine del loro regno, quando i ribelli avranno colmato la misura, sorgerà un re dall'aspetto feroce ed esperto in stratagemmi.

24 La sua potenza crescerà, ma non per sua propria forza; compirà sorprendenti rovine, prospererà nelle sue imprese e distruggerà i potenti e il popolo dei santi.

25 Per la sua astuzia farà prosperare la frode nelle sue mani; si innalzerà nel suo cuore e distruggerà molti che stanno al sicuro; insorgerà contro il principe dei principi, ma sarà infranto senza mano d'uomo.

26 La visione delle sere e delle mattine di cui è stato parlato, è vera. Tu tieni segreta la visione, perché riguarda cose che avverranno fra molto tempo».

27 E io, Daniele, mi sentii sfinito e fui malato per vari giorni, poi mi alzai e sbrigai gli affari del re. Io ero stupito della visione, ma nessuno se ne avvide.

In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first.

And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai.

Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.

I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great.

And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes.

And I saw him come close unto the ram, and he was moved with choler against him, and smote the ram, and brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground, and stamped upon him: and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand.

Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.

And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land.

10 And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them.

11 Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of the sanctuary was cast down.

12 And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.

13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?

14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

15 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man.

16 And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.

17 So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.

18 Now as he was speaking with me, I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground: but he touched me, and set me upright.

19 And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be.

20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.

21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.

22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.

23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.

24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people.

25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.

27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.
