Daniel en el foso de los leones
6 Darío decidió nombrar ciento 20 hombres[a] para que gobernaran las diferentes provincias de su reino. 2 Además eligió a tres ministros ante los cuales debían rendir cuentas los 120 gobernadores de las provincias. Daniel era uno de los tres ministros. El rey nombró a los ministros para que todo estuviera vigilado y no corriera ningún riesgo. 3 Daniel demostró que era mucho mejor que los demás ministros y gobernadores. El rey estaba muy impresionado por sus habilidades y sabiduría y quería nombrarlo como dirigente de todo el reino. 4 Entonces los demás gobernadores y ministros buscaron alguna falta en la administración que hacía Daniel de los asuntos del reino. Pero no encontraron nada malo porque Daniel era un hombre de fiar y no aceptaba sobornos ni era corrupto.
5 Entonces ellos dijeron: «No vamos a encontrar nada malo en su trabajo, mejor busquemos en su religión la forma de acusarlo».
6 Así que fueron en grupo a hablar con el rey y le dijeron:
—¡Viva el rey Darío por siempre! 7 Majestad, los ministros, prefectos[b], gobernadores de provincias y demás colaboradores tenemos una propuesta. Hemos pensado prohibir durante 30 días que las personas hagan oraciones o peticiones a cualquier dios o persona que no sea el rey. Quien no cumpla esta norma será mandado al foso de los leones. 8 Su majestad debe aprobar el decreto y firmarlo para que sea una ley. Esa ley no podrá cambiarse porque las leyes de los medos y los persas no pueden cambiarse ni anularse.
9 Entonces el rey Darío aprobó la ley y la firmó.
10 Daniel, sabiendo que el rey había firmado esa ley, de inmediato se fue a su casa y abrió las ventanas del segundo piso que daban hacia Jerusalén, y se arrodilló para orar y dar gracias a Dios, tal como siempre lo hacía tres veces al día.
11 Luego esos hombres fueron a la casa de Daniel y lo encontraron orando y alabando a su Dios. 12 En seguida se presentaron ante el rey y dijeron:
—Majestad, usted ha firmado una ley prohibiendo durante 30 días que se hagan oraciones o peticiones a cualquier dios o persona que no sea usted. Y quien no obedezca será mandado al foso de los leones. ¿No es verdad?
El rey respondió:
—Así es. Es una ley para los medos y los persas, y no puede anularse ni cambiarse.
13 Entonces le dijeron al rey:
—Daniel, uno de los deportados de Judá, no lo respeta a usted ni a la ley que usted firmó. Todo lo contrario, dice oraciones a su Dios tres veces al día.
14 El rey quedó muy triste después de escuchar esas palabras. Se puso a pensar en alguna solución para salvar a Daniel. Estuvo hasta el anochecer buscando alguna manera de rescatarlo. 15 Pero aquellos hombres urgían al rey diciendo:
—Majestad, usted sabe que según la ley de los medos y de los persas, las leyes y normas firmadas por el rey no se pueden cambiar.
16 Así que el rey les ordenó que trajeran a Daniel y lo metieran en el foso de los leones. El rey le dijo a Daniel:
—Espero que tu Dios, a quien sirves con tanta devoción, te salve.
17 Luego pusieron una enorme roca tapando el foso. El rey puso su sello y el de sus altos funcionarios para que nadie pudiera cambiar la sentencia contra Daniel. 18 El rey se fue para su palacio. Se acostó sin cenar y no aceptó ninguna distracción, pero no pudo dormir en toda la noche.
19 A la mañana siguiente, el rey se levantó apenas salió el sol y se fue para el foso de los leones. 20 Cuando llegó al lugar gritó:
—¡Daniel! Tú eres servidor del Dios viviente y siempre estás a su servicio. ¿Tu Dios pudo salvarte de los leones?
21 Daniel respondió:
—¡Viva el rey por siempre! 22 Mi Dios envió a su ángel a cerrar la boca de los leones y no me han hecho nada, porque sabe que soy inocente, y tampoco le he hecho a usted, majestad, ningún mal.
23 El rey se alegró y ordenó que sacaran a Daniel del foso de los leones. Cuando lo sacaron de allí, vieron que no tenía ni un rasguño porque había confiado en su Dios. 24 Entonces el rey ordenó que llevaran ante él a los hombres que habían acusado a Daniel. Los llevaron y luego los echaron en el foso de los leones junto con sus esposas y sus hijos. Apenas entraron al foso, los leones les devoraron hasta los huesos.
25 El rey Darío escribió este mensaje para la gente de todas las naciones y lenguas del mundo:
«Los saludo a todos y deseo que tengan paz y prosperidad.
26 »Ordeno que en todo mi reino, hasta en la más pequeña provincia, todos adoren y respeten al Dios de Daniel.
ȃl es el Dios vivo
y existe para siempre.
Su reino jamás será destruido;
su poder no tiene fin.
27 Él salva y libera;
hace prodigios y milagros
en la tierra y en el cielo.
Él salvó a Daniel
de las garras de los leones».
28 Daniel siguió siendo muy importante durante el reinado de Darío y también durante el reinado de Ciro, rey de Persia.

6 Pareció bien a Darío constituir sobre el reino ciento veinte sátrapas, que gobernasen en todo el reino. 2 Y sobre ellos tres gobernadores, de los cuales Daniel era uno, a quienes estos sátrapas diesen cuenta, para que el rey no fuese perjudicado. 3 Pero Daniel mismo era superior a estos sátrapas y gobernadores, porque había en él un espíritu superior; y el rey pensó en ponerlo sobre todo el reino. 4 Entonces los gobernadores y sátrapas buscaban ocasión para acusar a Daniel en lo relacionado al reino; mas no podían hallar ocasión alguna o falta, porque él era fiel, y ningún vicio ni falta fue hallado en él. 5 Entonces dijeron aquellos hombres: No hallaremos contra este Daniel ocasión alguna para acusarle, si no la hallamos contra él en relación con la ley de su Dios.
6 Entonces estos gobernadores y sátrapas se juntaron delante del rey, y le dijeron así: ¡Rey Darío, para siempre vive! 7 Todos los gobernadores del reino, magistrados, sátrapas, príncipes y capitanes han acordado por consejo que promulgues un edicto real y lo confirmes, que cualquiera que en el espacio de treinta días demande petición de cualquier dios u hombre fuera de ti, oh rey, sea echado en el foso de los leones. 8 Ahora, oh rey, confirma el edicto y fírmalo, para que no pueda ser revocado, conforme a la ley de Media y de Persia, la cual no puede ser abrogada. 9 Firmó, pues, el rey Darío el edicto y la prohibición.
10 Cuando Daniel supo que el edicto había sido firmado, entró en su casa, y abiertas las ventanas de su cámara que daban hacia Jerusalén, se arrodillaba tres veces al día, y oraba y daba gracias delante de su Dios, como lo solía hacer antes. 11 Entonces se juntaron aquellos hombres, y hallaron a Daniel orando y rogando en presencia de su Dios. 12 Fueron luego ante el rey y le hablaron del edicto real: ¿No has confirmado edicto que cualquiera que en el espacio de treinta días pida a cualquier dios u hombre fuera de ti, oh rey, sea echado en el foso de los leones? Respondió el rey diciendo: Verdad es, conforme a la ley de Media y de Persia, la cual no puede ser abrogada. 13 Entonces respondieron y dijeron delante del rey: Daniel, que es de los hijos de los cautivos de Judá, no te respeta a ti, oh rey, ni acata el edicto que confirmaste, sino que tres veces al día hace su petición.
14 Cuando el rey oyó el asunto, le pesó en gran manera, y resolvió librar a Daniel; y hasta la puesta del sol trabajó para librarle. 15 Pero aquellos hombres rodearon al rey y le dijeron: Sepas, oh rey, que es ley de Media y de Persia que ningún edicto u ordenanza que el rey confirme puede ser abrogado.
16 Entonces el rey mandó, y trajeron a Daniel, y le echaron en el foso de los leones. Y el rey dijo a Daniel: El Dios tuyo, a quien tú continuamente sirves, él te libre. 17 Y fue traída una piedra y puesta sobre la puerta del foso, la cual selló el rey con su anillo y con el anillo de sus príncipes, para que el acuerdo acerca de Daniel no se alterase. 18 Luego el rey se fue a su palacio, y se acostó ayuno; ni instrumentos de música fueron traídos delante de él, y se le fue el sueño.
19 El rey, pues, se levantó muy de mañana, y fue apresuradamente al foso de los leones. 20 Y acercándose al foso llamó a voces a Daniel con voz triste, y le dijo: Daniel, siervo del Dios viviente, el Dios tuyo, a quien tú continuamente sirves, ¿te ha podido librar de los leones? 21 Entonces Daniel respondió al rey: Oh rey, vive para siempre. 22 Mi Dios envió su ángel, el cual cerró la boca de los leones, para que no me hiciesen daño, porque ante él fui hallado inocente; y aun delante de ti, oh rey, yo no he hecho nada malo. 23 Entonces se alegró el rey en gran manera a causa de él, y mandó sacar a Daniel del foso; y fue Daniel sacado del foso, y ninguna lesión se halló en él, porque había confiado en su Dios. 24 Y dio orden el rey, y fueron traídos aquellos hombres que habían acusado a Daniel, y fueron echados en el foso de los leones ellos, sus hijos y sus mujeres; y aún no habían llegado al fondo del foso, cuando los leones se apoderaron de ellos y quebraron todos sus huesos.
25 Entonces el rey Darío escribió a todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas que habitan en toda la tierra: Paz os sea multiplicada. 26 De parte mía es puesta esta ordenanza: Que en todo el dominio de mi reino todos teman y tiemblen ante la presencia del Dios de Daniel; porque él es el Dios viviente y permanece por todos los siglos, y su reino no será jamás destruido, y su dominio perdurará hasta el fin. 27 Él salva y libra, y hace señales y maravillas en el cielo y en la tierra; él ha librado a Daniel del poder de los leones.
28 Y este Daniel prosperó durante el reinado de Darío y durante el reinado de Ciro el persa.

6 Darejaves fann det lämpligt att sätta etthundratjugo satraper över riket, för att de skulle finnas överallt i hans välde. 2 Över dem satte han tre furstar, och en av dem var Daniel. Inför dessa skulle satraperna avlägga räkenskap, så att kungen inte led någon skada. 3 Men Daniel utmärkte sig framför de andra furstarna och satraperna, ty en ande utan like var i honom, och kungen övervägde att sätta honom över hela riket. 4 Då försökte de andra furstarna och satraperna finna något att anklaga Daniel för i det som angick riket. Men de kunde inte finna något att anklaga honom för eller något brottsligt hos honom, eftersom han var trogen i sin tjänst. De fann ingen förseelse och ingen orätt hos honom. 5 Då sade männen: "Vi lär inte finna något att anklaga den där Daniel för, utom möjligen när det gäller hans gudsdyrkan."
6 Därefter fick furstarna och satraperna bråttom att komma in till kungen, och de sade till honom: "Må du leva för evigt, konung Darejaves! 7 Alla rikets furstar, landshövdingar och satraper, rådsherrar och ståthållare har enats om att en kunglig förordning borde antas och ett påbud utfärdas, att vem som helst som under trettio dagar ber till någon annan, gud eller människa, än till dig, o konung, han skall kastas i lejongropen. 8 Utfärda därför, o konung, ett påbud om detta och låt en skrivelse sättas upp, som efter Mediens och Persiens orubbliga lag inte kan återkallas." 9 I enlighet med detta lät då kung Darejaves sätta upp ett skriftligt påbud.
10 Så snart Daniel fick veta att skrivelsen var uppsatt, gick han in i sitt hus där han i sin övre sal hade fönster öppna i riktning mot Jerusalem. Där föll han ner på sina knän tre gånger om dagen, bad och tackade sin Gud, så som han tidigare hade brukat göra. 11 Då kom dessa män instormande och fann Daniel i färd med att bedja och åkalla sin Gud. 12 De gick då till kungen och frågade honom angående det kungliga påbudet: "Har inte du låtit sätta upp ett påbud med innehållet att vem som helst som under trettio dagar vänder sig i sin bön till någon annan, gud eller människa, än till dig, o konung, han skall kastas i lejongropen?" Kungen svarade: "Jo, och det påbudet står fast efter Mediens och Persiens orubbliga lag." 13 Då sade de till kungen: "Daniel, en av de judiska fångarna, har varken tagit hänsyn till dig eller det påbud du har låtit utfärda utan förrättar sin bön tre gånger om dagen."
14 När kungen hörde detta blev han mycket bedrövad och vinnlade sig om att rädda Daniel. Ända till solnedgången ansträngde han sig att finna en utväg för att rädda honom. 15 Då fick männen bråttom att komma till kungen, och de sade till honom: "Vet, o konung, att det är Mediens och Persiens lag att inget påbud och ingen förordning som konungen utfärdar kan återkallas." 16 Då lät kungen hämta Daniel och kasta honom i lejongropen, och kungen sade till Daniel: "Din Gud, den som du så oavbrutet dyrkar, han må rädda dig!" 17 Och man förde fram en sten och lade den över gropens öppning, och kungen förseglade den med sitt eget och med sina stormäns sigill, för att ingen förändring skulle kunna göras i det som nu hade skett med Daniel.
18 Sedan gick kungen hem till sitt palats och fastade hela natten och lät inga kvinnor[a] komma in till sig och han kunde inte sova. 19 På morgonen när det blev ljust steg kungen upp och skyndade till lejongropen. 20 När han kom i närheten av gropen ropade han på Daniel med ängslig röst. Han sade: "Daniel, du den levande Gudens tjänare, har din Gud, som du så oavbrutet dyrkar, kunnat rädda dig från lejonen?" 21 Då svarade Daniel kungen: "Må konungen leva för evigt! 22 Min Gud har sänt sin ängel och stängt till lejonens gap, så att de inte skadat mig. För jag är utan skuld inför honom och jag har inte heller förbrutit mig mot dig, o konung."
23 Då blev kungen mycket glad och befallde att man skulle ta upp Daniel ur gropen. När han hade tagits upp kunde man inte upptäcka någon skada på honom, ty han hade förtröstat på sin Gud. 24 Sedan lät kungen hämta de män som hade anklagat Daniel och han lät kasta dem i lejongropen med deras barn och hustrur, och innan de ännu hade hunnit till botten i gropen överföll lejonen dem och krossade alla deras ben.
25 Därefter lät kung Darejaves skriva till alla folk och stammar och tungomål som fanns på hela jorden:
"Jag önskar er fred och framgång!
26 Härmed befaller jag att man inom hela mitt rikes område skall bäva och frukta för Daniels Gud.
Ty han är den levande Guden,
som evigt förblir.
Hans rike kan inte förgöras,
hans välde har inget slut.
27 Han befriar och räddar,
han gör tecken och under
i himlen och på jorden,
han som har befriat Daniel
ur lejonens våld."
28 Och denne Daniel steg i ära och makt under Darejaves regering, det vill säga[b] under persern Koresh[c] regering.

6 [a]It pleased Darius(A) to appoint 120 satraps(B) to rule throughout the kingdom, 2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel.(C) The satraps were made accountable(D) to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.(E) 4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges(F) against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”(G)
6 So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever!(H) 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors(I) have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den.(J) 8 Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(K) 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.
10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward(L) Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees(M) and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.(N) 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.(O) 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”
The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(P)
13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,(Q) pays no attention(R) to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed;(S) he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.
15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”(T)
16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den.(U) The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue(V) you!”
17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed(W) it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating(X) and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.(Y)
19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”(Z)
21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever!(AA) 22 My God sent his angel,(AB) and he shut the mouths of the lions.(AC) They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight.(AD) Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound(AE) was found on him, because he had trusted(AF) in his God.
24 At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den,(AG) along with their wives and children.(AH) And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.(AI)
25 Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language(AJ) in all the earth:
“May you prosper greatly!(AK)
26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence(AL) the God of Daniel.(AM)
“For he is the living God(AN)
and he endures forever;(AO)
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end.(AP)
27 He rescues and he saves;(AQ)
he performs signs and wonders(AR)
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions.”(AS)
28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus[b](AT) the Persian.(AU)

6 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom;
2 And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.
3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
4 Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
5 Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
6 Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.
7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
8 Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
11 Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.
12 Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
13 Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.
14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.
15 Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.
16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.
17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.
18 Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him.
19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.
20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?
21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.
22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.
23 Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.
24 And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.
25 Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.
26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.
27 He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.
28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
