6 1 El reino pasó a manos de Darío el medo, que por entonces tenía sesenta y dos años.

2 Pensó Darío que era oportuno nombrar ciento veinte sátrapas para que administrasen su reino. 3 Por encima de ellos designó a tres ministros (entre los que se encontraba Daniel), a quienes los sátrapas deberían dar cuenta de su administración. De ese modo se evitarían situaciones que perjudicasen los intereses del rey. 4 Daniel sobresalía por encima de los ministros y de los sátrapas, pues estaba más capacitado que ninguno de ellos, hasta tal punto que el rey tenía pensado ponerlo al frente de todo el reino. 5 Por tal motivo, los otros dos ministros y los sátrapas trataban de buscar alguna excusa que implicase a Daniel en una mala administración del reino. Pero no pudieron encontrar nada, ni siquiera indicios de irregularidad, pues Daniel era leal y no podían acusarle de irregularidad o negligencia. 6 Entonces aquellos hombres se dijeron: “No podremos encontrar nada que acuse a Daniel, a no ser que lo busquemos en materia relacionada con la ley de su Dios”.
7 Los ministros y sátrapas se presentaron inmediatamente ante el rey y le dijeron:
— ¡Larga vida al rey Darío! 8 Los ministros del reino, prefectos, sátrapas, consejeros y gobernadores todos hemos pensado en la conveniencia de promulgar un real decreto con esta prohibición: “Durante treinta días nadie podrá dirigir una oración a cualquier otro dios o ser humano, salvo a ti, majestad. Quien lo haga, será arrojado al foso de los leones”. 9 Si te parece bien, majestad, firma este real decreto y sanciona así la prohibición, de modo que nadie pueda modificarlo, tal como se refleja en la ley irrevocable de los medos y los persas.
10 El rey Darío firmó la prohibición.
11 Cuando Daniel se enteró de la firma de aquel decreto, se retiró a su casa. La habitación superior de la vivienda tenía las ventanas orientadas hacia Jerusalén. Daniel se recluía en ella tres veces al día y, puesto de rodillas, oraba y alababa a su Dios. Siempre lo había hecho así. 12 Los hombres antes mencionados se presentaron en la casa y encontraron a Daniel orando y suplicando a su Dios. 13 Acudieron de inmediato al rey y le recordaron el real decreto:
— ¿No has firmado un decreto ordenando que, durante treinta días, nadie rece a cualquier otro dios o ser humano, salvo a ti, majestad, so pena de ser arrojado al foso de los leones?
El rey respondió:
— Así es, y se trata de un decreto irrevocable, según la ley de los medos y de los persas.
14 Entonces dijeron al rey:
— Pues Daniel, uno de los deportados de Judá, no te obedece, majestad, pues pasa por alto el decreto que firmaste. Ora tres veces al día.
15 Al oírlo, el rey se entristeció y se propuso salvar a Daniel; lo estuvo intentando hasta la puesta de sol. 16 Pero aquellos hombres acudieron en masa al rey y le dijeron:
— Ya sabes, majestad, que, según la ley de los medos y de los persas, todo real decreto es irrevocable una vez promulgado.
17 El rey acabó cediendo y mandó que trajeran a Daniel y lo arrojaran al foso de los leones. Antes le dijo:
— Tu Dios, a quien tan fielmente das culto, te salvará.
18 Una vez dentro, trajeron una piedra para cerrar la boca del foso, y el rey la selló con su anillo y el de sus dignatarios para que, conforme a la sentencia, nadie pudiese hacer nada por Daniel. 19 El rey regresó a palacio y pasó la noche ayunando, sin la compañía de las concubinas y sin poder conciliar el sueño. 20 Se levantó al rayar el alba y fue a toda prisa al foso de los leones. 21 Cuando estaba ya cerca, llamó a Daniel con voz angustiada:
— Daniel, siervo del Dios vivo, ¿te ha podido salvar de los leones el Dios al que das culto diariamente?
22 Daniel respondió:
— ¡Larga vida al rey! 23 Mi Dios ha enviado a su ángel a cerrar la boca de los leones, y no me han hecho daño alguno. Él sabe que soy inocente y que no he cometido nada irregular contra ti, majestad.
24 El rey se alegró mucho y mandó que sacasen a Daniel del foso. Una vez fuera, comprobaron que no tenía ni un rasguño, porque había confiado en su Dios. 25 El rey ordenó a continuación que arrojasen al foso de los leones a los hombres que habían denunciado a Daniel, junto con sus hijos y sus esposas. Todavía no habían llegado al suelo, cuando los leones se lanzaron sobre ellos y les trituraron los huesos. 26 El rey Darío escribió la siguiente carta a la gente de todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas de la tierra:
— ¡Que su paz aumente día a día! 27 Ordeno que en todos los dominios de mi reino todos veneren y respeten al Dios de Daniel.
Él es el Dios vivo y eterno;
su reino no será aniquilado,
su imperio durará hasta el fin.
28 Es capaz de salvar y liberar,
él hace señales y prodigios
lo mismo en el cielo que en la tierra.
Él ha salvado a Daniel de morir
en las garras de los leones.
29 En cuanto a Daniel, prosperó durante los reinados de Darío y de Ciro, el persa.

6 Дарию было угодно поставить сто двадцать сатрапов, чтобы они управляли всем царством, 2 а над ними – трёх сановников, одним из которых был Даниял. Сатрапы должны были отчитываться перед ними, чтобы царю не было никакого ущерба. 3 Скоро Даниял так отличился среди сатрапов и сановников своими исключительными качествами, что царь уже думал поставить его над всем царством. 4 Тогда сановники и сатрапы стали искать предлог, чтобы обвинить Данияла в неверном ведении царских дел. Но это им не удалось, потому что он был верен, и за ним не находилось ни оплошности, ни вины. 5 Наконец, эти люди сказали:
– Нам не найти предлога для обвинения Данияла, разве только в Законе его Бога.
6 Тогда сановники и сатрапы пришли все вместе к царю и сказали:
– О царь Дарий, живи вечно! 7 Все царские сановники, военачальники, сатрапы, советники и наместники согласны в том, что царю следует дать повеление и наложить запрет, чтобы всякого, кто станет в течение следующих тридцати дней молиться иному богу или человеку, кроме тебя, о царь, бросили бы в яму со львами. 8 Итак, о царь, издай запрет и подпиши указ, чтобы его нельзя было изменить – по законам мидян и персов, которые не подлежат отмене.
9 И царь Дарий подписал этот указ и запрет.
10 Когда Даниял узнал о том, что указ подписан, он пошёл домой в верхнюю комнату, окна которой открывались в сторону Иерусалима. Три раза в день он опускался на колени и молился, славя своего Бога, как он делал это и прежде. 11 А заговорщики пришли все вместе и нашли Данияла молящимся и просящим милости у Аллаха. 12 Тогда они пошли к царю и говорили с ним о его царском запрете:
– Разве ты не подписал запрета, по которому того, кто в течение следующих тридцати дней будет молиться иному богу или человеку, кроме тебя, о царь, бросили бы в яму со львами?
Царь ответил:
– Это воистину так, по законам мидян и персов, которые не подлежат отмене.
13 Тогда они сказали царю:
– Даниял, один из иудейских пленников, не слушается ни тебя, о царь, ни запрета, который ты подписал. Он по-прежнему молится три раза в день.
14 Услышав это, царь был очень расстроен; он решил спасти Данияла и до захода солнца всячески пытался это сделать.
15 Но заговорщики все вместе пришли к царю и сказали ему:
– Вспомни, о царь, что по закону мидян и персов никакой запрет или повеление, изданные царём, изменить нельзя.
16 Тогда царь отдал приказ, и Данияла привели и бросили в яму со львами. Царь сказал Даниялу:
– Пусть твой Бог, Которому ты верно служишь, спасёт тебя!
17 Затем принесли камень и положили его на отверстие ямы, и царь запечатал его своей печатью и печатями вельмож, чтобы никто не освободил Данияла. 18 Потом царь вернулся во дворец и постился весь вечер; он отказался от развлечений, и сон бежал от него.
19 При первом свете зари царь встал и поспешил к яме со львами. 20 Приблизившись к яме, он позвал Данияла жалобным голосом:
– Даниял, раб живого Бога, смог ли Аллах, Которому ты верно служишь, спасти тебя от львов?
21 Даниял ответил:
– О царь, живи вечно! 22 Мой Бог послал ангела и замкнул пасти львов. Они не причинили мне вреда, потому что я оказался безвинным перед Ним. Да и пред тобой, о царь, я никогда не делал никакого зла.
23 Царь был чрезвычайно рад за него и приказал вытащить Данияла из ямы. Когда Данияла вытащили из ямы, на нём не оказалось никаких ран, потому что он верил в своего Бога.
24 По приказу царя обвинителей Данияла привели и бросили в яму со львами, вместе с их детьми и жёнами. И прежде чем они упали на дно ямы, львы схватили их и разодрали на части.
25 Тогда царь Дарий написал ко всем народам, племенам и людям всякого языка, живущим по всей земле:
«Да умножится ваше благополучие!
26 Я издаю указ, чтобы в каждой части моего царства люди трепетали перед Богом Данияла и боялись Его.
Ведь Он – Бог живой,
вечно сущий;
царство Его не погибнет,
владычество не прекратится.
27 Он избавляет и спасает,
творит знамения и чудеса
на небесах и на земле.
Он избавил Данияла
от челюстей львиных».
28 И Даниял преуспевал во времена правления Дария и Кира Персидского[a].

Daniel in the Den of Lions
6 [a]It pleased Darius(A) to appoint 120 satraps(B) to rule throughout the kingdom, 2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel.(C) The satraps were made accountable(D) to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.(E) 4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges(F) against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”(G)
6 So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever!(H) 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors(I) have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den.(J) 8 Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(K) 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.
10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward(L) Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees(M) and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.(N) 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.(O) 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”
The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(P)
13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,(Q) pays no attention(R) to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed;(S) he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.
15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”(T)
16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den.(U) The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue(V) you!”
17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed(W) it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating(X) and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.(Y)
19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”(Z)
21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever!(AA) 22 My God sent his angel,(AB) and he shut the mouths of the lions.(AC) They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight.(AD) Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound(AE) was found on him, because he had trusted(AF) in his God.
24 At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den,(AG) along with their wives and children.(AH) And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.(AI)
25 Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language(AJ) in all the earth:
“May you prosper greatly!(AK)
26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence(AL) the God of Daniel.(AM)
“For he is the living God(AN)
and he endures forever;(AO)
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end.(AP)
27 He rescues and he saves;(AQ)
he performs signs and wonders(AR)
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions.”(AS)
28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus[b](AT) the Persian.(AU)

6 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom;
2 And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.
3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
4 Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
5 Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
6 Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.
7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
8 Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
11 Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.
12 Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
13 Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.
14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.
15 Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.
16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.
17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.
18 Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him.
19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.
20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?
21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.
22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.
23 Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.
24 And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.
25 Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.
26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.
27 He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.
28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
