Daniel i lejongropen
6 Dareios fann det för gott att tillsätta 120 satraper[a] som skulle finnas överallt i riket, 2 och över dem tre ministrar, av vilka Daniel var en. Satraperna skulle avlägga räkenskap för dem, så att kungen inte led någon förlust. 3 Daniel med sin enastående begåvning visade sig snart vara dugligare än de andra ministrarna och satraperna, och kungen hade planer på att sätta honom över hela riket.
4 De andra ministrarna och satraperna försökte då finna något att anmärka på i Daniels tjänsteutövning, men de kunde inte hitta något. De kunde inte finna något korrupt hos honom, eftersom han var pålitlig och varken oärlig eller slarvig. Man fann ingenting mot honom. 5 Till sist sa männen: ”Vi kommer aldrig att hitta något att anklaga denne Daniel för, förutom möjligen något som gäller hans Guds lag.”
6 Ministrarna och satraperna gick som en grupp[b] till kungen och sa: ”Kung Dareios, må du leva i evighet! 7 Alla rikets ministrar, landshövdingar, satraper, rådgivare och ståthållare har enats om att en kunglig förordning borde utfärdas och ett påbud ges att den som under de kommande trettio dagarna ber till någon annan, gud eller människa, än till dig, o kung, ska kastas i lejongropen. 8 Utfärda alltså nu, o kung, detta påbud och skriv ner det, så att det i enlighet med Mediens och Persiens orubbliga lag inte kan återkallas.” 9 Kung Dareios gjorde så och skrev ner påbudet.
10 När Daniel fick veta att förordningen var utfärdad gick han hem, där fönstren i övervåningen var öppna mot Jerusalem. Där böjde han knä tre gånger om dagen, bad och tackade sin Gud, precis som han alltid hade gjort.
11 Gruppen av dessa män gick då dit och fann att Daniel bad och åkallade sin Gud. 12 De gick till kungen och tog upp det kungliga påbudet: ”Har inte du utfärdat ett påbud att den som under de närmaste trettio dagarna tillber någon annan, gud eller människa, än dig, o kung, ska kastas i lejongropen?” ”Jo”, svarade kungen, ”det är fastställt enligt Mediens och Persiens lag, som inte kan återkallas.” 13 Då berättade de för kungen: ”Daniel, en av de judiska fångarna, bryr sig inte om dig och ditt påbud som du utfärdat, o kung. Han förrättar sin bön tre gånger om dagen.”
14 När kungen hörde detta, blev han mycket bekymrad och bestämde sig för att försöka rädda Daniel. Ända till solnedgången ansträngde han sig för att komma på något sätt att rädda honom. 15 Sedan kom gruppen till kungen och sa: ”Tänk på, o kung, att i medisk och persisk lag kan inget påbud och ingen förordning som kungen utfärdar återkallas.” 16 Då lät kungen hämta Daniel och kasta honom i lejongropen. Kungen sa till honom: ”Måtte din Gud som du ständigt tillber rädda dig!” 17 En sten hämtades och lades över öppningen, och kungen förseglade den med sitt eget och sina stormäns sigill, så att ingenting skulle kunna ändras när det gällde Daniel.
18 Sedan gick kungen tillbaka till sitt palats och lade sig utan att äta den natten. Han ville inte ha någon kvinna[c], och han låg sömnlös. 19 Kungen steg upp mycket tidigt i gryningen och skyndade sig ut till lejongropen. 20 När han närmade sig gropen ropade han på Daniel med en ängslig röst: ”Daniel, du den levande Gudens tjänare, kunde din Gud, som du ständigt tillber, rädda dig från lejonen?” 21 Då svarade Daniel kungen: ”Må kungen leva i evighet! 22 Min Gud sände sin ängel. Han stängde lejonens gap. De har inte rört mig, eftersom jag har befunnits vara oskyldig inför Gud, och inte heller har jag gjort något orätt mot dig, o kung.”
23 Kungen blev utom sig av glädje och befallde att man skulle hämta upp Daniel. När man hade lyft upp Daniel, kunde man inte finna någon skada på honom. Han hade litat på sin Gud. 24 På kungens befallning hämtade man sedan de män som hade anklagat Daniel och kastade dem i lejongropen tillsammans med deras barn och hustrur. Innan de ens hunnit ner till gropens botten var lejonen över dem och slet dem i stycken.
25 Därefter skrev kung Dareios till alla folk, nationer och språkgrupper i hela riket:
”Jag önskar er stor välgång!
26 Det är min befallning att man överallt i mitt rike ska bäva och frukta för Daniels Gud.
Han är den levande Guden,
som evigt förblir.
Hans rike ska aldrig gå under,
och hans makt tar aldrig slut.
27 Han räddar och befriar,
han gör tecken och under
i himlen och på jorden.
Han har räddat Daniel från lejonen.”
28 Daniel hade framgång under hela Dareios regeringstid och likaså under persern Kyros.

6 Darejavesh fann det lämpligt att sätta hundratjugo satraper över riket, för att de skulle finnas överallt i riket. 2 Över dem satte han tre furstar, och en av dem var Daniel. Inför dem skulle satraperna avlägga räkenskap så att kungen inte skulle lida någon förlust.
3 Men Daniel utmärkte sig framför de andra furstarna och satraperna, för han hade en ande utan like, och kungen övervägde att sätta honom över hela riket. 4 (A) Då försökte de andra furstarna och satraperna finna något att anklaga Daniel för i det som gällde riket. Men de kunde inte finna något att anklaga honom för eller något brottsligt hos honom, eftersom han var trogen i sin tjänst. Det fanns varken försumlighet eller ohederlighet hos honom. 5 Då sade männen: ”Vi lär inte hitta något att anklaga den där Daniel för, ifall det inte gäller hans gudsdyrkan.”
6 (B) Därefter skyndade[a] furstarna och satraperna i väg till kungen och sade till honom: ”Må du leva för evigt, kung Darejavesh! 7 Rikets alla furstar, guvernörer och satraper, rådsherrar och ståthållare har enats om att det bör antas en kunglig förordning och utfärdas ett påbud: Den som under trettio dagar ber till någon annan gud eller människa än till dig, o konung, ska kastas i lejongropen[b]. 8 (C) Så utfärda nu, o konung, ett påbud och sätt upp en skrivelse som efter Mediens och Persiens orubbliga lag inte kan återkallas.” 9 Kung Darejavesh gjorde så och lät sätta upp ett skriftligt påbud.
10 (D) Så snart Daniel fick veta att skrivelsen var uppsatt, gick han in i sitt hus. På övervåningen hade han fönster öppna i riktning mot Jerusalem[c]. Där föll han ner på sina knän tre gånger om dagen[d] och bad och tackade sin Gud, precis som han tidigare brukat göra.
11 Då kom männen instormande och fann Daniel i färd med att be och åkalla sin Gud. 12 (E) De gick då till kungen och frågade honom om det kungliga påbudet: ”Har du inte satt upp ett påbud om att den som under trettio dagar ber till någon annan gud eller människa än till dig, o konung, ska kastas i lejongropen?” Kungen svarade: ”Jo, och påbudet står fast efter Mediens och Persiens orubbliga lag.” 13 Då sade de till kungen: ”Daniel, en av de judiska fångarna, har varken tagit hänsyn till dig eller det påbud du utfärdat utan ber sin bön tre gånger om dagen.”
14 När kungen hörde det blev han djupt bedrövad och bestämde sig för att rädda Daniel. Ända till solnedgången ansträngde han sig för att finna en utväg och rädda honom. 15 Då skyndade männen in till kungen och sade till honom: ”Vet, o konung, att det är Mediens och Persiens lag att de påbud och förordningar som kungen utfärdar inte kan återkallas.”
16 Då lät kungen hämta Daniel och kasta honom i lejongropen, och kungen sade till Daniel: ”Må din Gud, som du ständigt dyrkar, rädda dig!” 17 (F) Och man bar fram en sten och lade den över gropens öppning, och kungen förseglade den med sitt eget och sina stormäns sigill för att inget skulle kunna ändras i det som hände med Daniel. 18 Sedan gick kungen hem till sitt palats. Han fastade hela natten och lät inga kvinnor[e] komma in till sig, och han kunde inte sova.
19 På morgonen när det ljusnade steg kungen upp och skyndade till lejongropen. 20 När han kom i närheten av gropen ropade han på Daniel med ängslig röst. Han sade: ”Daniel, du den levande Gudens tjänare! Har din Gud, som du ständigt dyrkar, kunnat rädda dig från lejonen?” 21 Då svarade Daniel kungen: ”Må kungen leva för evigt! 22 (G) Min Gud har sänt sin ängel och stängt lejonens gap så att de inte skadat mig. För jag är utan skuld inför honom, och jag har inte heller gjort något fel mot dig, o konung.”
23 Då blev kungen mycket glad och befallde att man skulle ta upp Daniel ur gropen. När han hade tagits upp kunde man inte se någon skada på honom, eftersom han hade litat på sin Gud. 24 Sedan lät kungen hämta männen som hade anklagat Daniel, och han lät kasta dem i lejongropen med deras barn och hustrur. Innan de ens hade nått botten i gropen överföll lejonen dem och krossade alla deras ben.
25 (H) Därefter lät kung Darejavesh skriva till alla folk och stammar och språk som fanns över hela jorden:
”Jag önskar er fred och framgång!
26 (I) Härmed befaller jag att man inom hela mitt rikes område ska bäva och frukta för Daniels Gud.
För han är den levande Guden
som består för evigt.
Hans rike kan inte förgöras,
hans välde har inget slut.
27 Han befriar och räddar,
han gör tecken och under
i himlen och på jorden,
och han har befriat Daniel
ur lejonens våld.”
28 (J) Och denne Daniel steg i ära och makt under Darejaveshs regering, det vill säga[f] under persern Koreshs[g] regering.

Daniel in the Den of Lions
6 [a]It pleased Darius(A) to appoint 120 satraps(B) to rule throughout the kingdom, 2 with three administrators over them, one of whom was Daniel.(C) The satraps were made accountable(D) to them so that the king might not suffer loss. 3 Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.(E) 4 At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges(F) against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent. 5 Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”(G)
6 So these administrators and satraps went as a group to the king and said: “May King Darius live forever!(H) 7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors(I) have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions’ den.(J) 8 Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(K) 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing.
10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward(L) Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees(M) and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.(N) 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help.(O) 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or human being except to you, Your Majesty, would be thrown into the lions’ den?”
The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.”(P)
13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah,(Q) pays no attention(R) to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed;(S) he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him.
15 Then the men went as a group to King Darius and said to him, “Remember, Your Majesty, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.”(T)
16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den.(U) The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue(V) you!”
17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed(W) it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating(X) and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.(Y)
19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”(Z)
21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever!(AA) 22 My God sent his angel,(AB) and he shut the mouths of the lions.(AC) They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight.(AD) Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound(AE) was found on him, because he had trusted(AF) in his God.
24 At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den,(AG) along with their wives and children.(AH) And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.(AI)
25 Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language(AJ) in all the earth:
“May you prosper greatly!(AK)
26 “I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence(AL) the God of Daniel.(AM)
“For he is the living God(AN)
and he endures forever;(AO)
his kingdom will not be destroyed,
his dominion will never end.(AP)
27 He rescues and he saves;(AQ)
he performs signs and wonders(AR)
in the heavens and on the earth.
He has rescued Daniel
from the power of the lions.”(AS)
28 So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus[b](AT) the Persian.(AU)

6 Darío tomó la decisión de constituir sobre su reino ciento veinte sátrapas que se encargaran del gobierno. 2 Sobre ellos puso a tres gobernadores, a quienes los sátrapas debían rendir cuentas, para que los intereses del rey no se vieran afectados. Uno de los tres gobernadores era Daniel, 3 aunque Daniel estaba por encima de los sátrapas y los gobernadores porque en él radicaba un espíritu superior. 9 El rey firmó el edicto y la prohibición. 10 Y cuando Daniel supo que el edicto había sido firmado, entró en su casa, abrió las ventanas de su alcoba que daban hacia Jerusalén, y tres veces al día se arrodillaba y oraba a su Dios, dándole gracias como acostumbraba hacerlo. 11 Pero aquellos hombres se juntaron y hallaron a Daniel orando y rogando en presencia de su Dios, 12 así que fueron ante el rey y, haciendo referencia al edicto real, dijeron:
«¿No es verdad que Su Majestad ha confirmado un edicto, el cual ordena que cualquiera que en los treinta días siguientes pida el favor de cualquier dios o persona sea echado en el foso de los leones? ¡A menos, claro, que pida el favor de Su Majestad!»
El rey respondió:
«En efecto. Y conforme a la ley de Media y de Persia, ese edicto no puede ser revocado.»
13 Al instante, ellos respondieron al rey:
«¡Pues Daniel, que es uno de los cautivos de Judá, no respeta a Su Majestad ni acata el edicto que Su Majestad ha confirmado! ¡Al contrario, tres veces al día pide el favor de su Dios!»
14 Cuando el rey oyó esto, se puso muy apesadumbrado y resolvió librar a Daniel. Hasta la puesta del sol hizo todo lo posible por ponerlo a salvo, 15 pero aquellos hombres lo rodearon y le dijeron:
«Su Majestad seguramente sabe que, según la ley de Media y de Persia, ningún edicto o decreto confirmado por el rey puede ser abrogado.»
16 El rey dio entonces la orden de que llevaran a Daniel al foso de los leones, y lo arrojaran allí. Sin embargo, le dijo a Daniel:
«El Dios a quien tú sirves sin cesar habrá de librarte.»
17 Enseguida trajeron una piedra y la pusieron sobre la entrada del foso, y el rey la selló con su anillo y con el anillo de sus príncipes, para que la orden acerca de Daniel no fuera alterada. 18 Después de eso, el rey se fue a su palacio y se acostó sin comer nada. Tampoco permitió que tocaran para él instrumentos de música, y hasta el sueño se le fue.
19 Muy de mañana, el rey se levantó y lo primero que hizo fue dirigirse al foso de los leones. 20 Cuando estuvo cerca del foso, con voz triste pero fuerte llamó a Daniel y le dijo:
«Daniel, siervo del Dios viviente, a quien tú sirves sin cesar, dime: ¿pudo tu Dios librarte de los leones?»
21 Daniel le respondió:
«¡Que viva Su Majestad para siempre! 22 Mi Dios envió a su ángel para que cerrara las fauces de los leones y no me hicieran daño. Y es que delante de Dios soy inocente, y aun delante de Su Majestad, pues no he cometido ningún mal.»
23 Al escucharlo, el rey se alegró mucho, y mandó que sacaran del foso a Daniel. Y cuando lo sacaron, salió ileso porque había confiado en su Dios. 24 Entonces el rey mandó traer a los que habían acusado a Daniel, y que los arrojaran al foso de los leones junto con sus hijos y sus mujeres. Y aún no habían llegado al fondo del foso cuando los leones ya se habían lanzado sobre ellos y les habían despedazado todos los huesos.
25 Después, el rey Darío escribió lo siguiente para todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas que habitaban en el país:
«Que la paz les sea multiplicada. 26 Con este decreto ordeno que, en toda la extensión de mi reino, todos teman y tiemblen ante la presencia del Dios de Daniel. Porque él es el Dios viviente; él permanece por todos los siglos, y su reino no será jamás destruido. ¡Su dominio perdurará hasta el fin! 27 El salva y libra, y hace señales y maravillas en el cielo y en la tierra. ¡Él es quien ha salvado a Daniel de las fauces de los leones!»
28 Y Daniel fue prosperado durante los reinados de Darío y de Ciro el persa.

6 It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom;
2 And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.
3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.
4 Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
5 Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
6 Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.
7 All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.
8 Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.
10 Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.
11 Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.
12 Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
13 Then answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.
14 Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.
15 Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.
16 Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.
17 And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.
18 Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him.
19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.
20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?
21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.
22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.
23 Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.
24 And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den.
25 Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.
26 I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.
27 He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.
28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
