5 El rey Belsasar ofreció un gran banquete e invitó a 1000 funcionarios de la corte. El rey bebió mucho vino mientras estaba con sus invitados. 2 El rey Belsasar, muy excitado por tanto vino, ordenó que le trajeran las copas de oro y plata que Nabucodonosor, padre[a] de Belsasar, se había llevado del templo de Jerusalén. Belsasar quería que sus invitados, sus esposas y sus concubinas las usaran en la fiesta. 3 Cuando le trajeron las copas de oro que se habían llevado del templo de Dios en Jerusalén, el rey, sus invitados, sus esposas y sus concubinas bebieron en ellas. 4 Mientras bebían, adoraban a sus dioses de oro y plata, bronce y hierro, madera y piedra.
5 En ese momento aparecieron los dedos de una mano humana y escribieron sobre el yeso de la pared que estaba justo frente a la lámpara, de modo que el rey pudo ver cómo escribía la mano. 6 El rey se puso pálido del susto y estaba confundido; le temblaban las piernas y sus rodillas chocaban la una contra la otra. 7 Enseguida, el rey ordenó a gritos que le trajeran a todos los adivinos, magos y caldeos. Y les dijo a todos esos sabios de Babilonia:
—Le daré un cargo muy importante en mi reino a quien pueda leer y explicarme esa escritura. Esa persona recibirá vestidos púrpura, un collar de oro y será el tercer hombre más importante en el reino.
8 Todos los sabios se presentaron ante el rey, pero ninguno pudo leer ni entender lo que estaba escrito. 9 Entonces los oficiales se preocuparon mucho y el rey Belsasar se asustó tanto que palideció aun más.
10 La reina escuchó que Belsasar y sus invitados hacían mucho ruido, así que fue al salón de la fiesta y le dijo al rey:
—¡Viva el rey por siempre! No te asustes ni palidezcas. 11 En tu reino hay un hombre que tiene el espíritu de los santos dioses. Cuando tu padre era rey, ese hombre demostró que tenía gran inteligencia y sabiduría. Era la sabiduría de los dioses. Tu padre, el rey Nabucodonosor, lo nombró jefe de todos los adivinos, hechiceros, magos y caldeos. 12 Ese hombre se llama Daniel y tu padre le dio el nombre de Baltasar. Daniel tiene un poder espiritual, tiene conocimiento y entendimiento para explicar sueños y resolver misterios y problemas. Llámale y que te dé la interpretación de esos escritos.
13 Entonces llevaron a Daniel ante el rey y este le preguntó:
—¿Eres tú Daniel y perteneces a los deportados judíos que mi padre trajo de Judá? 14 He oído que tú tienes el espíritu de los dioses; que eres brillante, inteligente y tienes mucha sabiduría. 15 Todos los sabios y magos vinieron para leer y explicarme lo que está escrito en la pared, pero ninguno de ellos pudo entender ni una sola palabra. 16 He escuchado que tú puedes interpretar cosas como estas y descifrar misterios. Si puedes leer lo que dice en la pared y explicarme su significado te daré una gran recompensa. Recibirás vestidos de púrpura y un collar de oro. Te convertirás en el tercer hombre más importante del reino.
17 Daniel respondió:
—Majestad, guarde sus regalos o dele sus obsequios a otro. Voy a leer lo escrito en la pared y a explicarle qué significa.
18 »El Dios altísimo le dio el reino, grandeza, poder y honor a su padre, el rey Nabucodonosor. 19 Por ese poder que recibió, todas las naciones, pueblos y lenguas lo temían y respetaban. Nabucodonosor decidía a quién mataba o a quién dejaba vivir. Si él quería que alguien fuera importante, lo hacía importante y si quería que alguien fuera despreciable, lo hacía despreciable. 20 Pero Nabucodonosor se llenó de orgullo y terquedad. Entonces, se le quitó el poder que tenía como rey y se acabó toda su gloria. 21 Lo llevaron lejos de la gente y se volvió como un animal. Vivía entre las bestias salvajes, comía pasto como el ganado y el rocío mojaba su cuerpo. Hasta que por fin reconoció que sólo el Dios altísimo tiene poder sobre todos los reinos de los hombres. Sólo Dios decide quién gobierna los países.
22 »Belsasar, usted es hijo de Nabucodonosor y es igual que él. Sabe todo lo que le sucedió a él, pero no se ha portado con humildad. 23 Todo lo contrario, se ha rebelado contra el Señor del cielo. Usted mandó traer las copas de oro y plata que son del templo y luego con sus invitados, sus esposas y sus concubinas las usó para beber vino celebrando a sus dioses. Esos son sólo ídolos falsos de plata y oro, bronce y hierro, madera y piedra, que no pueden ver ni oír ni pensar. Pero usted no dio honra al Dios verdadero que tiene poder y controla su vida y todo lo que usted hace. 24 Por eso, él sacó su mano y escribió en la pared 25 y estas son las palabras que están escritas: mene, mene, téquel, parsin.
26 »Esto es lo que significan esas palabras:
Mene[b]: Dios ha contado los días y le ha puesto fin a tu reino.[c]
27 Téquel[d]: Dios ha puesto tu reino en la balanza y no ha pesado lo suficiente.
28 Parsin[e]: Tu reino ha sido dividido y ahora le pertenece a los medos y a los persas.
29 De inmediato Belsasar ordenó que le dieran a Daniel lo que le había prometido. Lo vistieron de púrpura, le pusieron el collar de oro en el cuello y lo nombraron el tercer hombre más importante del reino. 30 Esa misma noche mataron a Belsasar, rey de los caldeos. 31 Darío de Media tenía 62 años cuando se apoderó del reino.

5 Belsasar, rey de Babilonia, invitó a un gran banquete a mil de las altas personalidades de la nación; y, durante la comida, el rey y sus invitados bebieron mucho vino. 2-3 Excitado por el vino, el rey Belsasar mandó traer las copas y tazones de oro y plata que su padre Nabucodonosor se había llevado del templo de Jerusalén. Las copas y tazones fueron traídos, y bebieron en ellos el rey, sus mujeres, sus concubinas y todos los demás asistentes al banquete. 4 Todos bebían vino y alababan a sus ídolos, hechos de oro, plata, bronce, hierro, madera y piedra.
5 En aquel momento apareció una mano de hombre que, a la luz de los candiles, comenzó a escribir con el dedo sobre la pared blanca de la sala. Al ver el rey la mano que escribía, 6 se puso pálido y, del miedo que le entró, comenzó a temblar de pies a cabeza. 7 Luego se puso a gritar y llamar a los adivinos, sabios y astrólogos de Babilonia, y les dijo:
—El que lea lo que ahí está escrito, y me explique lo que quiere decir, será vestido con ropas de púrpura, llevará una cadena de oro en el cuello y ocupará el tercer lugar en el gobierno de mi reino.
8 Todos los sabios que estaban al servicio del rey entraron en la sala, pero nadie pudo entender el significado de lo escrito ni explicárselo al rey. 9 Entonces le entró tanto miedo al rey Belsasar, que su cara se puso completamente pálida. Las personalidades del gobierno no sabían qué hacer, 10 pero la reina madre, atraída por los gritos de su hijo el rey y de los grandes personajes invitados, entró en la sala del banquete y dijo:
—¡Que viva Su Majestad para siempre! Y no se preocupe ni se ponga pálido, 11 que en su reino hay un hombre guiado por el espíritu del Dios santo. Cuando el padre de Su Majestad era rey, ese hombre demostró tener una mente clara, e inteligencia y sabiduría como la de los dioses. Por eso el rey Nabucodonosor, padre de Su Majestad, nombró a ese hombre jefe de todos los magos, adivinos, sabios y astrólogos de la nación, 12 ya que en Daniel, a quien el rey puso el nombre de Beltsasar, había un espíritu extraordinario e inteligencia y ciencia para entender el significado de los sueños, explicar el sentido de las palabras misteriosas y resolver los asuntos complicados. Llame Su Majestad a Daniel, y él le dará a conocer el significado de lo que está escrito en la pared.
13 Daniel fue llevado ante el rey, y el rey le preguntó:
—¿Eres tú Daniel, uno de aquellos prisioneros judíos que mi padre, el rey Nabucodonosor, trajo de Judea? 14 Me han dicho que el espíritu de Dios está en ti, que tienes una mente clara, y que eres muy inteligente y sabio. 15 Pues bien, los hombres más sabios de la nación han estado aquí para leer esas palabras y explicarme su significado, pero ni siquiera las entienden. 16 Sin embargo, he oído decir que tú puedes aclarar dudas y resolver cuestiones difíciles. Si tú puedes leer esas palabras y decirme lo que significan, haré que seas vestido con ropas de púrpura, que te pongan una cadena de oro en el cuello y que ocupes el tercer lugar en el gobierno de mi reino.
17 Entonces Daniel le contestó:
—Quédese Su Majestad con sus regalos, y ofrézcale a otro el honor de estar en su palacio. Yo le explicaré de todos modos a Su Majestad lo que quieren decir las palabras escritas en la pared.
18 «El Dios altísimo dio el reino, y también grandeza, gloria y honor, a Nabucodonosor, padre de Su Majestad. 19 Por el poder que le dio, gente de todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas lo respetaban y temblaban ante él. Y él mataba o dejaba vivir a quien él quería; a unos los ponía en alto y a otros los humillaba. 20 Pero cuando se llenó de soberbia, y actuó terca y orgullosamente, se le quitó el poder y la gloria que tenía como rey. 21 Fue apartado de la gente y se convirtió en una especie de animal; vivió con los asnos salvajes, comió hierba como los bueyes y el rocío empapó su cuerpo, hasta que reconoció que el Dios altísimo tiene poder sobre todos los reinos humanos, y que él da la dirección del gobierno a quien él quiere. 22 Y ahora Su Majestad, Belsasar, que es hijo de aquél y que sabe lo que le pasó, tampoco ha vivido con humildad. 23 Al contrario, Su Majestad se ha burlado del Señor del cielo mandando traerse a la mesa las copas y tazones del templo, y, junto con sus invitados, ha bebido vino en ellos y ha dado alabanza a dioses hechos de oro, plata, bronce, hierro, madera y piedra; dioses que no ven, ni oyen, ni saben nada. En cambio, no ha alabado al Dios en cuyas manos está la vida de Su Majestad y de quien depende todo lo que haga. 24 Por eso, él envió la mano que escribió esas palabras, 25 MENÉ, MENÉ, TEKEL y PARSÍN, 26 las cuales significan lo siguiente: MENÉ: Dios ha medido los días del reinado de Su Majestad, y le ha señalado su fin; 27 TEKEL: Su Majestad ha sido pesado en la balanza, y pesa menos de lo debido; 28 PARSÍN: el reino de Su Majestad ha sido dividido, y será entregado a medos y persas.»
29 En seguida el rey Belsasar ordenó que vistieran a Daniel con ropas de púrpura y que le pusieran una cadena de oro en el cuello, y comunicó a todos que, desde ese mismo instante, Daniel ocuparía el tercer lugar en el gobierno del reino.
30 Aquella misma noche mataron a Belsasar, rey de los caldeos, 31 (6.1) y Darío de Media se apoderó del reino. Darío tenía entonces sesenta y dos años de edad.

5 Kung Belsassar ordnade en stor festmåltid för sina tusen stormän och drack vin med dem. 2 När Belsassar var påverkad av vinet, befallde han att man skulle bära in de kärl av guld och silver som hans far Nebukadnessar hade tagit ur templet i Jerusalem. Ur dem skulle sedan kungen och hans stormän, hans gemåler och bihustrur dricka. 3 Då bar man fram guldkärlen som hade tagits ur Guds tempel i Jerusalem, och kungen och hans stormän, hans gemåler och bihustrur drack vin ur dem. 4 Medan de drack prisade de sina gudar av guld och silver, av koppar, järn, trä och sten.
5 I samma stund visade sig fingrar som av en människohand, som skrev på den vitkalkade väggen mitt emot den stora ljusstaken i kungens palats, och kungen såg handen som skrev. 6 Då blev kungen blek och fylldes av oroliga tankar, så att han blev alldeles knäsvag och benen vek sig. 7 Och kungen ropade med hög röst och befallde att man skulle hämta besvärjarna, kaldeerna och stjärntydarna. Kungen sade till de vise i Babel: "Den som kan läsa denna skrift och ge mig dess uttydning skall bli klädd i purpur, och guldkedjan skall hängas om hans hals, och han skall i makt vara den tredje i riket."
8 Då kom kungens alla vise in, men de kunde varken läsa skriften eller tyda den för kungen. 9 Kung Belsassar blev då ännu mer förskräckt. Färgen vek bort från hans ansikte och hans stormän var bestörta. 10 Men när kungens mor fick höra vad kungen och hans stormän hade sagt, begav hon sig till salen för festmåltiden. Där tog hon till orda och sade: "Må konungen leva för evigt! Låt inte dina tankar förskräcka dig och låt inte färgen vika bort från ditt ansikte. 11 I ditt rike finns en man, i vilken heliga gudars ande är. I din fars tid visade han sig ha insikt och förstånd och vishet lik gudars vishet. Din far, kung Nebukadnessar, satte honom främst bland spåmännen, besvärjarna, kaldeerna och stjärntydarna. Detta gjorde din far, kungen, 12 eftersom Daniel, som kungen gav namnet Beltesassar, hade en enastående ande, klokhet, förstånd och skicklighet att uttyda drömmar och lösa gåtor och reda ut invecklade ting. Sänd därför efter Daniel. Han kommer att ge uttydningen."
13 När Daniel hade förts till kungen sade denne: "Du är ju Daniel, en av de judiska fångar som min far, kungen, förde hit från Juda. 14 Jag har hört sägas om dig att gudars ande är i dig och att du har visat dig ha insikt och förstånd och utomordentlig vishet. 15 Nu är det så att de vise och besvärjarna har förts hit till mig för att läsa denna skrift och tyda den för mig, men de kan inte tyda den. 16 Men om dig har jag hört att du kan ge uttydningar och reda ut invecklade ting. Om du kan läsa skriften och säga mig vad den betyder skall du bli klädd i purpur, och guldkedjan skall hängas om din hals och du skall i makt vara den tredje i mitt rike."
17 Då sade Daniel till kungen: "Behåll dina gåvor och ge dina belöningar åt någon annan. Jag skall ändå läsa skriften för konungen och ge uttydningen: 18 Åt din far Nebukadnessar, o konung, gav den högste Guden rike och storhet, ära och härlighet, 19 och för den storhets skull som Gud hade gett honom darrade människor av alla folk, stammar och tungomål i skräck för honom. Vem han ville dödade han, och vem han ville lät han leva. Vem han ville upphöjde han, och vem han ville ödmjukade han. 20 Men när hans hjärta förhävde sig och hans ande blev stolt och övermodig, då störtades han från sin kungatron och hans ära togs ifrån honom. 21 Han blev utstött från människor, och hans hjärta blev likt ett djurs. Han måste bo bland vildåsnor och äta gräs som en oxe och hans kropp fuktades av himlens dagg - detta ända tills han insåg att Gud, den Högste, råder över människors riken och upphöjer vem han vill till att härska över dem.
22 Men du Belsassar, hans son, som har vetat allt detta, har ändå inte ödmjukat dig 23 utan upphöjt dig mot himmelens Herre och låtit bära fram kärlen från hans hus inför dig. Du och dina stormän, dina gemåler och bihustrur har druckit vin ur dem, och samtidigt har du prisat dina gudar av silver och guld, av koppar, järn, trä och sten, gudar som varken ser eller hör eller vet något. Men den Gud som har din ande och alla dina vägar i sin hand, honom har du inte ärat. 24 Därför har han nu sänt denna hand och skrivit detta. 25 Så lyder den skrift som är tecknad här: Mene mene tekel u-farsin. 26 Detta är uttydningen av den: Mene betyder: Gud har räknat ditt rikes dagar och gjort slut på det. 27 Tekel betyder: Du är vägd på en våg och funnen vara för lätt. 28 Peres betyder: Ditt rikeär delat och givet åt mederoch perser."
29 Då befallde Belsassar att man skulle klä Daniel i purpur, att guldkedjan skulle hängas om hans hals och att han skulle utropas till den tredje i riket.
30 Samma natt dödades Belsassar, kaldeernas kung.
31 Och medern Darejaves tog emot riket när han var sextiotvå år.[a]

5 King Belshazzar(A) gave a great banquet(B) for a thousand of his nobles(C) and drank wine with them. 2 While Belshazzar was drinking(D) his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets(E) that Nebuchadnezzar his father[a] had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines(F) might drink from them.(G) 3 So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4 As they drank the wine, they praised the gods(H) of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.(I)
5 Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. 6 His face turned pale(J) and he was so frightened(K) that his legs became weak(L) and his knees were knocking.(M)
7 The king summoned the enchanters,(N) astrologers[b](O) and diviners.(P) Then he said to these wise(Q) men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck,(R) and he will be made the third(S) highest ruler in the kingdom.”(T)
8 Then all the king’s wise men(U) came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant.(V) 9 So King Belshazzar became even more terrified(W) and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.
10 The queen,[c] hearing the voices of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet hall. “May the king live forever!”(X) she said. “Don’t be alarmed! Don’t look so pale! 11 There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods(Y) in him. In the time of your father he was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom(Z) like that of the gods.(AA) Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners.(AB) 12 He did this because Daniel, whom the king called Belteshazzar,(AC) was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles(AD) and solve difficult problems.(AE) Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.(AF)”
13 So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah?(AG) 14 I have heard that the spirit of the gods(AH) is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.(AI) 15 The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it.(AJ) 16 Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems.(AK) If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck,(AL) and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”(AM)
17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.(AN) Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.
18 “Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar(AO) sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor.(AP) 19 Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death;(AQ) those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled.(AR) 20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride,(AS) he was deposed from his royal throne(AT) and stripped(AU) of his glory.(AV) 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign(AW) over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.(AX)
22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son,[d] have not humbled(AY) yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against(AZ) the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives(BA) and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.(BB) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life(BC) and all your ways.(BD) 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.
25 “This is the inscription that was written:
mene, mene, tekel, parsin
26 “Here is what these words mean:
Mene[e]: God has numbered the days(BE) of your reign and brought it to an end.(BF)
27 Tekel[f]: You have been weighed on the scales(BG) and found wanting.(BH)
28 Peres[g]: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes(BI) and Persians.”(BJ)
29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck,(BK) and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.(BL)
30 That very night Belshazzar,(BM) king(BN) of the Babylonians,[h] was slain,(BO) 31 and Darius(BP) the Mede(BQ) took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.[i]

5 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
2 Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.
4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
8 Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.
9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.
10 Now the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:
11 There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;
12 Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.
13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?
14 I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.
15 And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:
16 And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
18 O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:
19 And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:
21 And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.
22 And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;
23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
24 Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.
25 And this is the writing that was written, Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.
26 This is the interpretation of the thing: Mene; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.
27 Tekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.
28 Peres; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
30 In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
31 And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
