Daniel tyder skriften på väggen
5 Kung Belshassar höll en stor fest för sina tusen stormän och drack vin med dem. 2 Medan Belshassar då drack vin beordrade han att man skulle hämta de guld- och silverkärl som hans far Nebukadnessar hade tagit från templet i Jerusalem. Kungen själv, hans stormän, hans hustrur och bihustrur skulle dricka ur dem. 3 Då hämtades guldkärlen som man hade tagit ur stora salen i Guds hus i Jerusalem, och kungen, hans stormän, hans hustrur och bihustrur drack ur dem. 4 De drack vin och prisade sina gudar av guld och silver, koppar och järn, trä och sten.
5 Plötsligt syntes fingrar från en människohand skriva på den vitkalkade väggen, invid den stora ljusstaken i kungapalatset. Kungen såg på handen när den skrev. 6 Hans ansikte bleknade, hans tankar skrämde honom, hans knän skakade och benen gav vika under honom. 7 Han ropade högt att man skulle hämta besvärjarna, astrologerna och teckentydarna och sa till de visa männen i Babylon: ”Den som kan läsa skriften och tala om för mig vad den betyder ska bli klädd i purpur, få en guldkedja kring sin hals och bli den tredje mannen[a] i riket.”
8 Men när kungens visa män kom var det ingen av dem som kunde förstå skriften, än mindre tala om vad den betydde. 9 Kung Belshassar blev alltmer förskräckt och allt blekare. Hans stormän var uppskakade.
10 Men när kungamodern fick höra vad kungen och stormännen sa, kom hon in i festsalen och sa: ”Må kungen leva för evigt! Var inte så förskräckt och blek! 11 Det finns en man i ditt rike som har heliga gudars ande i sig. På din fars tid fann man hos honom insikt, förstånd och vishet lik gudars vishet. Kung Nebukadnessar, din far, satte honom över magikerna, besvärjarna, astrologerna och teckentydarna. 12 Denne Daniel, som kungen gav namnet Belteshassar, har en enastående ande av kunskap och insikt. Han kan tyda drömmar och lösa gåtor och svåra problem. Kalla hit Daniel, så ger han uttydningen.”
13 Daniel fördes till kungen, och denne sa: ”Så du är Daniel, en av dem som min far kungen förde till exil från Juda. 14 Jag har hört att du har gudars ande i dig och att man hos dig funnit insikt, förstånd och enorm vishet. 15 De visa männen och besvärjarna har förts till mig för att läsa och tyda denna skrift, men de har inte kunnat ge någon förklaring. 16 Jag har hört att du kan ge tydningar och lösa svåra problem. Om du kan läsa skriften och tala om för mig vad den betyder ska du kläs i purpur, få en guldkedja om halsen och bli den tredje mannen i riket.”
17 Daniel svarade kungen: ”Behåll dina gåvor och ge dina belöningar till någon annan! Jag ska läsa skriften för kungen och tala om för honom vad den betyder ändå.
18 O, kung, den högste Guden gav din far Nebukadnessar riket och storheten, äran och härligheten. 19 För den storhets skull som Gud gav honom darrade alla världens folk, nationer och språk av fruktan för honom. Han dödade vem han ville och skonade människors liv när han så ville. Han upphöjde vem han ville och förnedrade vem han ville. 20 Men när han blev högmodig till sitt sinne och förhärdad och arrogant till sin läggning, störtades han från sin kungatron och berövades sin ära. 21 Han drevs ut från mänskligheten, hans innersta blev som ett djurs, och han bodde bland vildåsnor. Han fick äta gräs som oxarna, och hans kropp fuktades av himlens dagg, tills han insåg att den högste Guden regerar över alla mänskliga riken och att han sätter vem han vill till att regera över dem.
22 Men du Belshassar, hans son, du har inte blivit ödmjuk, fastän du känner till allt detta. 23 Du har satt dig upp mot himlens Herre och hämtat till dig kärlen från hans tempel. Du och dina stormän, hustrur och bihustrur har druckit vin ur dem medan ni prisat era gudar av silver, guld, koppar, järn, trä och sten, gudar som varken ser eller hör eller fattar något. Men den Gud som har din livsande och hela din livsvandring i sin makt, honom har du inte ärat. 24 Därför har han sänt denna hand som skrev denna skrift. 25 Så här lyder skriften som skrevs:
Mene mene tekel u-farsin. [b]
26 Och detta är vad det betyder:
Mene – Gud har räknat ditt rikes dagar och gjort slut på det.
27 Tekel – du är vägd på en våg och funnen vara för lätt.
28 Peres – ditt rike är delat och överlämnat åt meder och perser.”
29 På Belshassars befallning blev då Daniel klädd i purpur, en guldkedja hängdes om hans hals, och han utropades till den tredje mannen i riket. 30 Den natten blev Belshassar, kaldéernas kung, dödad, 31 och medern Dareios tog över riket vid sextiotvå års ålder.

Belshassars festmåltid
5 Kung Belshassar[a] ordnade en stor festmåltid[b] för sina tusen stormän och drack vin med dem. 2 (A) När Belshassar var påverkad av vinet, befallde han att man skulle bära in de kärl av guld och silver som hans far[c] Nebukadnessar hade tagit ur templet i Jerusalem. Kungen och hans stormän, hans hustrur och bihustrur skulle dricka ur dem. 3 Då bar man fram guldkärlen som hade tagits ur Guds tempel i Jerusalem, och kungen och hans stormän, hans hustrur och bihustrur drack vin ur dem. 4 (B) Medan de drack prisade de sina gudar av guld och silver, av koppar, järn, trä och sten.
5 I samma stund visade sig fingrar som av en människohand som skrev på den vitkalkade väggen mitt emot den stora ljusstaken i kungens palats[d], och kungen såg handen som skrev.
6 Då bleknade kungen och fylldes av oroliga tankar, han blev alldeles knäsvag och benen vek sig. 7 (C) Och kungen ropade med hög röst och befallde att man skulle hämta besvärjarna, kaldeerna och stjärntydarna. Kungen sade till de vise i Babel: ”Den som kan läsa den skriften och ge mig dess tydning ska bli klädd i purpur[e], få en guldkedja runt sin hals och styra som den tredje i riket.”
8 Då kom kungens alla vise in, men de kunde varken läsa skriften eller tyda den för kungen. 9 Kung Belshassar blev då ännu mer förskräckt. Färgen försvann från hans ansikte och hans stormän var bestörta.
10 (D) Men när drottningmodern[f] fick höra vad kungen och hans stormän hade sagt, kom hon till festsalen. Där tog hon till orda och sade: ”Må kungen leva för evigt! Låt inte dina tankar skrämma dig, var inte så blek! 11 (E) I ditt rike finns en man med heliga gudars ande i sig. På din fars tid visade han sig ha insikt och förstånd och en vishet lik gudarnas vishet. Din far, kung Nebukadnessar, satte honom främst bland spåmännen, besvärjarna, kaldeerna och stjärntydarna. Din far kungen gjorde så 12 (F) eftersom Daniel, som kungen gav namnet Belteshassar, hade en enastående ande, klokhet, förstånd och skicklighet att tyda drömmar och lösa gåtor och reda ut problem. Låt därför nu hämta Daniel. Han kommer att ge tydningen.”
13 (G) När Daniel hade förts till kungen tog kungen till orda: ”Är du Daniel, en av de judiska fångarna som min far kungen förde hit från Juda? 14 Jag har hört talas om dig, att gudars ande bor i dig och att du visat dig ha insikt och förstånd och utomordentlig vishet. 15 Nu är det så att de vise och besvärjarna har förts hit till mig för att läsa denna skrift och tyda den för mig, men de kan inte tyda den. 16 Men om dig har jag hört att du kan ge tydningar och reda ut problem. Om du kan läsa skriften och säga mig vad den betyder ska du bli klädd i purpur, få en guldkedja runt din hals och styra som den tredje i mitt rike.”
17 Då sade Daniel till kungen: ”Du kan behålla dina gåvor och ge dina belöningar åt någon annan. Jag ska ändå läsa skriften för kungen och ge tydningen.
18 (H) Åt din far Nebukadnessar, o konung, gav den högste Guden rike och storhet, ära och härlighet. 19 Inför den storhet som Gud gav honom darrade människor av alla folk, stammar och språk i skräck för honom. Vem han ville dödade han, och vem han ville lät han leva. Vem han ville upphöjde han, och vem han ville ödmjukade han.
20 Men när hans hjärta förhävde sig och hans ande blev stolt och övermodig, då störtades han från sin kungatron och blev fråntagen sin ära. 21 (I) Han blev utstött från människor, och hans hjärta blev som ett djurs. Han måste bo bland vildåsnor och äta gräs som en oxe, och hans kropp fuktades av himlens dagg, ända tills han insåg att Gud den Högste råder över människors riken och upphöjer vem han vill till att härska över dem.
22 Men du Belshassar, hans son, har ändå inte ödmjukat ditt hjärta trots att du visste allt detta. 23 (J) Du upphöjde dig mot himlens Herre och lät bära fram kärlen från hans hus inför dig. Du och dina stormän, dina hustrur och bihustrur drack vin ur dem, och samtidigt prisade du dina gudar av silver och guld, koppar, järn, trä och sten, gudar som varken ser eller hör eller vet något. Men den Gud som har din ande och alla dina vägar i sin hand, honom har du inte ärat.
24 Därför har han nu sänt denna hand och skrivit detta. 25 Så lyder skriften som är tecknad här: Mene mene tekel u-farsin. 26 Här är vad orden betyder. Mene: Gud har räknat ditt rikes dagar och gjort slut på det. 27 (K) Tekel:[g] Du är vägd på en våg och funnen för lätt. 28 Peres: Ditt rike är delat och gett åt meder och perser.”
29 (L) Då befallde Belshassar att man skulle klä Daniel i purpur, hänga guldkedjan om hans hals och utropa honom till den tredje i riket.
30 (M) Samma natt dödades Belshassar, kaldeernas kung. 31 Och medern Darejavesh[h] tog emot riket när han var sextiotvå år.

- 5:1 Belshassar Betyder ”Må Bel skydda kungen”. Son till kung Nabonidus (556-539 f Kr) och styresman i hans ställe medan kungen tillbringade tio år i den västarabiska oasen Tema (Job 6:19). Därför kan Belshassar endast erbjuda den tredje högsta positionen (vers 7).
- 5:1 en stor festmåltid Denna dag, i mitten av oktober 539 f Kr, var Babels sista dag i frihet. Perserkungen Koreshs arméer stod utanför Babels portar (jfr vers 30).
- 5:2 far Här i betydelse ”företrädare”. Belshassar och hans far Nabonidus hade tagit över efter Nebukadnessars ättlingar men inlett en ny dynasti.
- 5:5 kungens palats Tronsalen är utgrävd och mätte 50 x 17 meter.
- 5:7 purpur Antikens dyraste färg, ofta ett tecken på kunglig makt (jfr Est 8:15).
- 5:10 drottningmodern Nabonidus mor Adad-Guppi (född ca 648 f Kr) var en kraftfull prästinna vars självbiografi finns bevarad till i dag. Hon levde åtminstone fram till 552 f Kr. Ifall hon hade dött 539 f Kr åsyftas troligen istället Belshassars mor Nitokris.
- 5:26f Mene … Tekel En mina var ett viktmått som omfattade 60 siklar (aram. tekel). De två måtten motsvarar drygt 600 gram och 10 gram.
- 5:31 medern Darejavesh Troligen avses den persiske kung Koresh (jfr 6:28), som var ca 62 år gammal år 539 f Kr. Namnet Darejavesh förknippas annars med en kung som regerade 522-486 f Kr (Esra 4:24f). En annan identifikation som föreslagits är den mediske hövdingen Ugbaru som ledde Koreshs armé in i Babel.

The Writing on the Wall
5 King Belshazzar(A) gave a great banquet(B) for a thousand of his nobles(C) and drank wine with them. 2 While Belshazzar was drinking(D) his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets(E) that Nebuchadnezzar his father[a] had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines(F) might drink from them.(G) 3 So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4 As they drank the wine, they praised the gods(H) of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.(I)
5 Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. 6 His face turned pale(J) and he was so frightened(K) that his legs became weak(L) and his knees were knocking.(M)
7 The king summoned the enchanters,(N) astrologers[b](O) and diviners.(P) Then he said to these wise(Q) men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck,(R) and he will be made the third(S) highest ruler in the kingdom.”(T)
8 Then all the king’s wise men(U) came in, but they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant.(V) 9 So King Belshazzar became even more terrified(W) and his face grew more pale. His nobles were baffled.
10 The queen,[c] hearing the voices of the king and his nobles, came into the banquet hall. “May the king live forever!”(X) she said. “Don’t be alarmed! Don’t look so pale! 11 There is a man in your kingdom who has the spirit of the holy gods(Y) in him. In the time of your father he was found to have insight and intelligence and wisdom(Z) like that of the gods.(AA) Your father, King Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians, enchanters, astrologers and diviners.(AB) 12 He did this because Daniel, whom the king called Belteshazzar,(AC) was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding, and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles(AD) and solve difficult problems.(AE) Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what the writing means.(AF)”
13 So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him, “Are you Daniel, one of the exiles my father the king brought from Judah?(AG) 14 I have heard that the spirit of the gods(AH) is in you and that you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.(AI) 15 The wise men and enchanters were brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it means, but they could not explain it.(AJ) 16 Now I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and to solve difficult problems.(AK) If you can read this writing and tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck,(AL) and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”(AM)
17 Then Daniel answered the king, “You may keep your gifts for yourself and give your rewards to someone else.(AN) Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the king and tell him what it means.
18 “Your Majesty, the Most High God gave your father Nebuchadnezzar(AO) sovereignty and greatness and glory and splendor.(AP) 19 Because of the high position he gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language dreaded and feared him. Those the king wanted to put to death, he put to death;(AQ) those he wanted to spare, he spared; those he wanted to promote, he promoted; and those he wanted to humble, he humbled.(AR) 20 But when his heart became arrogant and hardened with pride,(AS) he was deposed from his royal throne(AT) and stripped(AU) of his glory.(AV) 21 He was driven away from people and given the mind of an animal; he lived with the wild donkeys and ate grass like the ox; and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he acknowledged that the Most High God is sovereign(AW) over all kingdoms on earth and sets over them anyone he wishes.(AX)
22 “But you, Belshazzar, his son,[d] have not humbled(AY) yourself, though you knew all this. 23 Instead, you have set yourself up against(AZ) the Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives(BA) and your concubines drank wine from them. You praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or understand.(BB) But you did not honor the God who holds in his hand your life(BC) and all your ways.(BD) 24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription.
25 “This is the inscription that was written:
mene, mene, tekel, parsin
26 “Here is what these words mean:
Mene[e]: God has numbered the days(BE) of your reign and brought it to an end.(BF)
27 Tekel[f]: You have been weighed on the scales(BG) and found wanting.(BH)
28 Peres[g]: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes(BI) and Persians.”(BJ)
29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was clothed in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck,(BK) and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.(BL)
30 That very night Belshazzar,(BM) king(BN) of the Babylonians,[h] was slain,(BO) 31 and Darius(BP) the Mede(BQ) took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.[i]

5 El rey Belsasar ofreció un gran banquete a mil de sus príncipes, y en presencia de todos ellos bebió vino en exceso. 2 Animado por el vino, Belsasar mandó traer los vasos de oro y de plata que Nabucodonosor, su padre, había sustraído del templo de Jerusalén, para que bebieran en ellos tanto él como sus invitados de importancia, y sus mujeres y concubinas. 3 Y así, le fueron llevados los vasos de oro que se habían sustraído del templo de Dios en Jerusalén, y el rey y sus invitados bebieron en ellos, lo mismo que sus mujeres y concubinas. 4 Embriagados de vino alabaron a los dioses de oro, plata, bronce, hierro, madera y piedra.
5 En ese mismo instante aparecieron los dedos de una mano humana que, a la luz del candelero, escribía sobre la parte blanca de la pared del palacio. Al ver el rey la mano que escribía, 6 se puso pálido y, sin saber qué pensar de esto, perdió las fuerzas y las rodillas comenzaron a temblarle. 7 Con grandes gritos, mandó llamar a los magos, hechiceros, adivinos y sabios de Babilonia, y les dijo:
«A quien pueda leer lo que está allí escrito, y me diga lo que significa, se le vestirá de púrpura, se le pondrá un collar de oro en el cuello, y se le nombrará tercer señor del reino.»
8 Todos los sabios del reino fueron llevados ante el rey, pero ninguno de ellos pudo leer la escritura ni decir al rey su significado. 9 Eso preocupó mucho al rey Belsasar, quien se puso pálido mientras sus príncipes no sabían qué hacer. 10 Pero la reina, que al oír las palabras del rey y de sus príncipes había entrado al salón del banquete, dijo:
«¡Que Su Majestad viva para siempre! No se preocupe Su Majestad con esos pensamientos que tiene, ni se ponga pálido. 11 En el reino de Su Majestad hay un hombre en el que habita el espíritu de los dioses santos. Cuando el padre de Su Majestad vivía, se encontró que dicho hombre estaba iluminado por la inteligencia y la sabiduría que sólo tienen los dioses. A ese hombre, Nabucodonosor, padre de Su Majestad, lo constituyó jefe de todos los magos, astrólogos, hechiceros y adivinos, 12 porque en él se halló un espíritu mayor de ciencia y entendimiento para interpretar sueños, descifrar enigmas y resolver dudas. Ese hombre es Daniel, a quien el padre de Su Majestad puso por nombre Beltsasar. Mande Su Majestad llamar a Daniel, y él le dirá lo que significa esa escritura.»
13 Cuando Daniel fue llevado a la presencia del rey, éste le dijo:
«¿Eres tú el Daniel que mi padre trajo de Judea, que vino entre los cautivos de Judá? 14 He oído decir que el espíritu de los dioses santos está en ti, y que en ti se halla más luz, entendimiento y sabiduría. 15 Han sido traídos a mi presencia sabios y astrólogos, para que lean esta escritura y me digan lo que significa, pero ninguno de ellos ha podido decirme lo que esto significa. 16 Sin embargo, he oído decir que tú puedes hacer interpretaciones y resolver dificultades. Si puedes leer esta escritura y decirme ahora lo que significa, serás vestido de púrpura, se te pondrá en el cuello un collar de oro, y se te nombrará tercer señor del reino.»
17 Allí, en presencia del rey, Daniel respondió:
«Su Majestad puede reservarse esos dones, o puede darlos a otros como recompensa Yo descifraré para Su Majestad esta escritura, y le diré lo que significa. 18 El Dios Altísimo dio al rey Nabucodonosor, padre de Su Majestad, el reino, la grandeza, la gloria y la majestad. 19 Por causa de la grandeza que Dios le dio, todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas temblaban de miedo ante él, y él le quitaba la vida o se la daba a quien quería; a unos los engrandecía y a otros los humillaba. 20 Pero su corazón se envaneció, y se endureció su espíritu orgulloso, y por eso fue depuesto del trono y despojado de su gloria. 21 Expulsado de entre los hombres, su mente se volvió semejante a la de las bestias, y convivió con los asnos monteses. Fue alimentado con hierba, como los bueyes, y su cuerpo lo empapó el rocío del cielo, hasta que reconoció que el Dios Altísimo es el señor del reino de los hombres, y que él entrega dicho reino a quien él quiere. 22 Pero Su Majestad Belsasar no ha humillado su corazón ante Dios, aun cuando sabe todo esto y es hijo del rey Nabucodonosor. 23 Lejos de eso, Su Majestad, en su soberbia, se ha levantado contra el Señor del cielo, ha mandado traer los vasos del templo de Dios, y tanto Su Majestad como sus invitados, y sus mujeres y concubinas, han bebido vino en ellos. Y no sólo eso, sino que Su Majestad ha dado alabanza a dioses de plata y oro, y de bronce, hierro, madera y piedra, ¡dioses que ni ven ni oyen nada, ni saben nada! En cambio, Su Majestad nunca ha honrado al Dios en cuya mano está su vida y todos sus caminos.
24 »Por eso ha salido de la presencia de Dios la mano que ha trazado esta escritura. 25 Lo que la escritura dice es lo siguiente: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN. 26 Y lo que significa es: MENE: Dios ha llamado a cuentas al reino de Su Majestad, y le ha puesto fin. 27 TEKEL: Dios ha pesado a Su Majestad en una balanza, y su peso deja mucho que desear. 28 PARSIN: Dios ha dividido el reino de Su Majestad, y se lo ha dado a los medos y a los persas.»
29 Belsasar ordenó entonces que Daniel fuera vestido de púrpura, que se le pusiera en el cuello un collar de oro, y que se le proclamara como el tercer señor del reino.
30 Esa misma noche Belsasar, rey de los caldeos, murió asesinado, 31 y el reino quedó en manos de Darío de Media, cuando éste tenía sesenta y dos años.

5 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.
2 Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.
3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem; and the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, drank in them.
4 They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.
5 In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
6 Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.
7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. And the king spake, and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and shew me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
8 Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.
9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were astonied.
10 Now the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet house: and the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed:
11 There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers;
12 Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation.
13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king. And the king spake and said unto Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, which art of the children of the captivity of Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Jewry?
14 I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee.
15 And now the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:
16 And I have heard of thee, that thou canst make interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
17 Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
18 O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour:
19 And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down.
20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:
21 And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will.
22 And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this;
23 But hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified:
24 Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.
25 And this is the writing that was written, Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin.
26 This is the interpretation of the thing: Mene; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.
27 Tekel; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.
28 Peres; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
29 Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
30 In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.
31 And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
