5 Muitos anos depois, o rei Belsazar deu um grande banquete para mil de seus nobres e bebeu vinho com eles. 2 Enquanto Belsazar tomava vinho, ordenou que trouxessem as taças de ouro e prata que seu antecessor,[a] Nabucodonosor, havia tirado do templo em Jerusalém. Queria beber nessas taças com seus nobres, suas esposas e suas concubinas. 3 Então trouxeram as taças de ouro do templo, a casa de Deus em Jerusalém, e o rei e seus nobres, suas esposas e concubinas beberam nelas. 4 Enquanto tomavam o vinho, louvavam seus ídolos feitos de ouro, prata, bronze, ferro, madeira e pedra.
5 De repente, viram dedos de mão humana escreverem no reboco da parede do palácio real, perto do candelabro. O próprio rei viu a mão enquanto ela escrevia, 6 e seu rosto ficou pálido de medo. Seus joelhos batiam um contra o outro, e suas pernas vacilavam.
7 Aos gritos, o rei mandou chamar os encantadores, os astrólogos[b] e os adivinhos. Disse aos sábios da Babilônia: “Quem conseguir ler esta inscrição e me disser o que ela significa será vestido com um manto vermelho, e em seu pescoço será colocada uma corrente de ouro. Ele se tornará o terceiro em importância em meu reino!”.
8 Quando todos os sábios do rei chegaram, nenhum deles foi capaz de ler a inscrição nem de dizer o que ela significava. 9 O rei ficou muito assustado, e seu rosto, ainda mais pálido. Seus nobres também ficaram abalados.
10 A rainha-mãe soube do que estava acontecendo ao rei e seus nobres e foi depressa à sala de banquetes. Disse ela a Belsazar: “Que o rei viva para sempre! Não fique tão pálido e assustado. 11 Há em seu reino um homem que tem nele o espírito dos santos deuses. Durante o reinado de Nabucodonosor, esse homem demonstrou percepção, entendimento e sabedoria como a dos deuses. Seu antecessor, o rei Nabucodonosor, o nomeou chefe de todos os magos, encantadores, astrólogos e adivinhos da Babilônia. 12 Esse homem, Daniel, a quem o rei deu o nome de Beltessazar, tem inteligência extraordinária e é cheio de conhecimento e entendimento. É capaz de interpretar sonhos, explicar enigmas e resolver problemas difíceis. Mande chamar Daniel, e ele lhe dirá o que significa a inscrição”.
Daniel interpreta a inscrição
13 Daniel foi levado à presença do rei, que lhe perguntou: “Você é Daniel, um dos exilados trazidos de Judá por meu antecessor, o rei Nabucodonosor? 14 Soube que o espírito dos deuses está em você, e que é cheio de percepção, entendimento e sabedoria. 15 Meus sábios e encantadores tentaram ler as palavras na parede e me dizer o que significam, mas não conseguiram. 16 Soube que você é capaz de interpretar e resolver problemas difíceis. Se conseguir ler as palavras e disser o que significam, será vestido com um manto vermelho, e em seu pescoço será colocada uma corrente de ouro. Você se tornará o terceiro em importância em meu reino”.
17 Daniel respondeu ao rei: “Guarde seus presentes ou entregue-os a outra pessoa; mas eu lhe direi o que significa a inscrição. 18 Ó rei, o Deus Altíssimo deu soberania, majestade, glória e honra a seu antecessor, Nabucodonosor. 19 Ele o engrandeceu de tal modo que povos de todas as raças, nações e línguas estremeciam de medo diante dele. Matava quem ele queria matar e poupava quem ele queria poupar; honrava quem ele queria honrar e humilhava quem ele queria humilhar. 20 Quando, porém, seu coração e sua mente se encheram de arrogância, ele foi tirado de seu trono e despojado de sua glória. 21 Foi expulso do convívio humano. Sua mente se tornou como a de um animal, e ele viveu entre os jumentos selvagens. Passou a comer capim, como os bois, e foi molhado pelo orvalho do céu, até entender que o Deus Altíssimo domina sobre todos os reinos do mundo e nomeia quem ele quer para governar sobre eles.
22 “Ó Belsazar, o senhor é sucessor[c] dele e sabia de tudo isso, mas mesmo assim não se humilhou. 23 Desafiou o Senhor dos céus e mandou trazer essas taças do templo. O rei, seus nobres, suas esposas e suas concubinas beberam vinho dessas taças enquanto louvavam deuses de prata, ouro, bronze, ferro, madeira e pedra, deuses que não veem, não ouvem, nem sabem coisa alguma. Mas o rei não honrou ao Deus que lhe dá fôlego de vida e controla seu destino. 24 Por isso Deus enviou a mão que escreveu a mensagem.
25 “Esta é a mensagem que foi escrita: Mene, Mene, Tequel e Parsim. 26 E este é o significado das palavras:
Mene:[d] Deus contou os dias de seu reinado e determinou seu fim.
27 Tequel:[e] Você foi pesado na balança e não atingiu o peso necessário.
28 Parsim:[f] Seu reino será dividido e entregue aos medos e aos persas”.
29 Então, por ordem de Belsazar, vestiram Daniel com um manto vermelho, colocaram em seu pescoço uma corrente de ouro e o declararam o terceiro em importância no reino.
30 Naquela mesma noite, Belsazar, rei da Babilônia,[g] foi morto.[h]
31 [i]E Dario, o medo, tinha 62 anos quando se apoderou do reino.

5 伯沙撒王盛宴款待一千大臣，與他們一同飲酒。 2 王暢飲的時候，命人將先王尼布甲尼撒從耶路撒冷聖殿中擄來的金銀器皿拿來，供他與大臣、王后和妃嬪用來飲酒。 3 於是，他們把從耶路撒冷上帝殿中擄來的金器拿來，王與大臣、王后和妃嬪便用這些器皿飲酒。 4 他們一邊飲酒，一邊頌讚金、銀、銅、鐵、木、石所造的神明。
5 突然，有人手的指頭出現，在燈臺對面王宮的粉牆上寫字。王看見那隻手在寫字， 6 臉色驟變，驚恐萬分，兩腿發軟，雙膝顫抖。 7 他大聲傳令，召來巫師、占星家和占卜者，對這些巴比倫的智者說：「誰能讀牆上的字，把意思告訴我，他必身穿紫袍，頸戴金鏈，在國中位居第三。」 8 王所有的智者進來後，竟無人能讀懂或把意思告訴王。 9 伯沙撒王愈發恐懼，臉色蒼白，他的大臣都不知所措。
10 太后聽到王和大臣的喊聲，便來到宴會廳，對王說：「願王萬歲！不要驚慌失色。 11 你國中有一個人，他有聖潔神明的靈。先王在世時，曾發現他有神明一樣的灼見、悟性和智慧。先王尼布甲尼撒立他為術士、巫師、占星家和占卜者的首領。 12 他有非凡的心智、知識和悟性，能解夢、釋謎、解惑。他叫但以理，先王給他取名叫伯提沙撒。現在可以把他召來，他必能解釋這些字的意思。」
13 於是，但以理被帶到王面前。王問他：「你就是先王從猶大擄來的但以理嗎？ 14 我聽說你有神明的靈，有灼見、悟性和非凡的智慧。 15 我召智者和巫師來讀這些字，為我解釋字的意思，但他們都不能解釋。 16 我聽說你能釋夢、解惑。你若能讀出牆上的字，把意思告訴我，你必身穿紫袍、頸戴金鏈，在我的國中位居第三。」
17 但以理回答說：「你的禮物自己留著，你的賞賜可以給別人，不過我會為你讀這些字，解釋意思。 18 王啊，至高的上帝曾將國位、權力、尊榮、威嚴賜給你的先王尼布甲尼撒， 19 因為他有上帝所賜的大權，各族、各邦、各語種的人都在他面前戰抖，充滿恐懼。他操生殺大權，可隨意擢升、罷黜。 20 但他變得心高氣傲、剛愎自用、狂妄自大，因而被革除王位、剝去尊榮。 21 他從人群中被趕走，他的心變成獸心，他與野驢同住，像牛一樣吃草，被天上的露水浸濕，直到他知道至高的上帝主宰世上萬國，祂要把國賜給誰就賜給誰。
22 「伯沙撒啊，你是他的後裔，你雖然知道這一切事，仍不謙卑， 23 竟在天上的主面前自大，命人拿來祂殿裡的器皿，供你和大臣、王后、妃嬪用來飲酒，並頌讚不能看、不能聽、一無所知、用金、銀、銅、鐵、木、石所造的神明，卻不尊崇賜你生命氣息、掌管你一舉一動的上帝。

Belshazzar’s Feast
5 Belshazzar the king (A)made a great feast for a thousand of his lords, and drank wine in the presence of the thousand. 2 While he tasted the wine, Belshazzar gave the command to bring the gold and silver vessels (B)which his [a]father Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple which had been in Jerusalem, that the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them. 3 Then they brought the gold (C)vessels that had been taken from the temple of the house of God which had been in Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from them. 4 They drank wine, (D)and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze and iron, wood and stone.
5 (E)In the same hour the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6 Then the king’s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened and his (F)knees knocked against each other. 7 (G)The king cried [b]aloud to bring in (H)the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke, saying to the wise men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing, and tells me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around his neck; (I)and he shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.” 8 Now all the king’s wise men came, (J)but they could not read the writing, or make known to the king its interpretation. 9 Then King Belshazzar was greatly (K)troubled, his countenance was changed, and his lords were [c]astonished.
10 The queen, because of the words of the king and his lords, came to the banquet hall. The queen spoke, saying, “O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your countenance change. 11 (L)There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your [d]father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and King Nebuchadnezzar your [e]father—your father the king—made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. 12 Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and [f]explaining enigmas were found in this Daniel, (M)whom the king named Belteshazzar, now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation.”
The Writing on the Wall Explained
13 Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke, and said to Daniel, “Are you that Daniel [g]who is one of the captives from Judah, whom my [h]father the king brought from Judah? 14 I have heard of you, that (N)the [i]Spirit of God is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. 15 Now (O)the wise men, the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing and make known to me its interpretation, but they could not give the interpretation of the thing. 16 And I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and [j]explain enigmas. (P)Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”
17 Then Daniel answered, and said before the king, “Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation. 18 O king, (Q)the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your [k]father a kingdom and majesty, glory and honor. 19 And because of the majesty that He gave him, (R)all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whomever he wished, he (S)executed; whomever he wished, he kept alive; whomever he wished, he set up; and whomever he wished, he put down. 20 (T)But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him. 21 Then he was (U)driven from the sons of men, his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, (V)till he [l]knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses.
22 “But you his son, Belshazzar, (W)have not humbled your heart, although you knew all this. 23 (X)And you have [m]lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the (Y)vessels of [n]His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, (Z)which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand (AA)and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. 24 Then the [o]fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.
25 “And this is the inscription that was written:
[p]MENE, MENE, [q]TEKEL, [r]UPHARSIN.
26 This is the interpretation of each word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 27 TEKEL: (AB)You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the (AC)Medes and (AD)Persians.”[s] 29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him (AE)that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
Belshazzar’s Fall
30 (AF)That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. 31 (AG)And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

Belshazzar’s Special Supper
5 King Belshazzar gave a special supper for a thousand of his important men, and drank wine with them. 2 When Belshazzar tasted the wine, he had all the gold and silver cups brought which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the Lord’s house in Jerusalem. The king sent for them so that he and his important men and all his wives could drink from them. 3 So they brought the gold cups that had been taken from the house of God in Jerusalem. And the king and his important men and all his wives drank from them. 4 They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, brass, iron, wood, and stone.
5 All at once the fingers of a man’s hand were seen writing on the wall near the lamp-stand of the king’s house. And the king saw the back of the hand as it wrote. 6 Then the king’s face turned white, and his thoughts turned to fear. His legs became weak and his knees began shaking. 7 The king called in a loud voice for the wonder-workers, the men who learned from stars and those who used their secret ways. He said to the wise men of Babylon, “Any man who can read this writing and tell me what it means will be dressed with purple clothing and have a chain of gold around his neck. And he will be the third in power in the nation.” 8 Then all the king’s wise men came in. But they could not read the writing or tell the king what it meant. 9 Then King Belshazzar was very afraid. His face lost even more of its color, and his important men did not know what to do.
10 The queen heard the words of the king and his men, and came into the room where they were eating. She said, “O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts make you afraid or your face turn white. 11 There is a man in your nation who has the spirit of the holy gods in him. In your father’s time light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him. And King Nebuchadnezzar, your father, made him the head of the wonder-workers, the men who learned from stars, and those who use their secret ways. 12 This was because a special spirit was found in this Daniel whom the king called Belteshazzar. He had much learning and understanding to tell the meaning of dreams and secrets and to give answers to problems. Call for Daniel, and he will tell you what this means.”
Daniel Tells What the Writing Means
13 So Daniel was brought to the king. And the king said to him, “Are you that Daniel who is one of the people whom my father the king brought from Judah? 14 I have heard that the spirit of the gods is in you. Light and understanding and special wisdom have been found in you also. 15 The wise men and wonder-workers were brought in to me so that they might read this writing and tell me what it means. But they could not tell me its meaning. 16 Now I have heard that you are able to tell the meaning of such things and give answers to hard problems. If you are able to read the writing and tell me what it means, you will be dressed in purple and wear a chain of gold around your neck. And you will be the third in power in the nation.”
17 Then Daniel answered the king, saying, “Keep your gifts for yourself, or give them to someone else. But I will read the writing to the king and tell him what it means. 18 O king, the Most High made your father Nebuchadnezzar king, and gave him greatness, honor, and power. 19 Because of the greatness He gave to him, all the people of every nation and language shook in fear in front of him. He killed whomever he wanted. And he let live whomever he wanted. He gave honor to whomever he wanted. And he put down whomever he wanted. 20 But when his heart and spirit became proud and he acted in pride, he was taken from his throne and his greatness was taken from him. 21 He was driven away from people, and his mind became like that of an animal. He lived with the wild donkeys. He ate grass like cattle, and his body became wet with the water from heaven. It was like this for him until he understood that the Most High God is ruler over the nation of all men, and that He lets whomever He wants rule it. 22 Yet you, his son Belshazzar, have not put away the pride from your heart, even though you knew all this. 23 You have honored yourself more than the Lord of heaven. The cups of His house have been brought to you. And you and your important men and all your wives have been drinking wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver, gold, brass, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see, hear or understand. But you have not honored the God Who holds your life and your ways in His hand. 24 So the hand was sent from Him to write on your wall. 25 “This is what was written: ‘MENE, MENE, TEKEL, and PARSIN.’ 26 And this is what it means: ‘MENE’ means that God has numbered the days of your rule and has brought it to an end. 27 ‘TEKEL’ means that you have been weighed and found to be too light. 28 ‘PERES’ means that your nation has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”
29 Then Belshazzar had them dress Daniel in purple and put a chain of gold around his neck. And he made it known that Daniel was the third most powerful ruler in the nation.
Belshazzar Is Killed
30 That very night Belshazzar the king of Babylon was killed. 31 So Darius the Mede became the king when he was sixty-two years old.
