4 Jag, Nebukadnessar, levde i lugn och ro i mitt hus och var lycklig i mitt palats. 2 Då fick jag en dröm som skrämde mig. Jag oroades av drömbilder på min bädd och av syner jag såg. 3 Därför befallde jag att man skulle hämta till mig alla de vise i Babel, för att de skulle tala om drömmens uttydning för mig. 4 Spåmännen, besvärjarna, kaldeerna och stjärntydarna kom, och jag berättade drömmen för dem, men de kunde inte ge mig uttydningen. 5 Slutligen kom också Daniel inför mig, han som hade fått namnet Beltesassar efter min guds namn. Heliga gudars ande bor i honom, och jag berättade drömmen för honom på detta sätt: 6 "Beltesassar, du som är den främste bland spåmännen, jag vet att heliga gudars ande bor i dig och att ingen hemlighet är för svår för dig. Säg mig vad jag såg i min dröm och vad den betyder!
7 Detta var den syn jag hade på min bädd: Jag såg i min syn ett träd stå mitt på jorden, och det var mycket högt. 8 Trädet var stort och väldigt och så högt att det räckte upp till himlen och syntes till jordens ände. 9 Lövverket var vackert och trädet bar mycket frukt så att det hade föda åt alla. Markens djur fann skugga under det och himlens fåglar bodde på grenarna. Allt levande fick sin mat från det.
10 Vidare såg jag i den syn jag hade på min bädd, hur en helig väktare steg ner från himlen. 11 Han ropade med hög röst och sade: Hugg ner trädet och hugg av grenarna, riv bort lövverket och strö ut frukten, så att djuren som ligger under trädet flyr sin väg och fåglarna flyger bort från grenarna. 12 Men stubben med rötterna skall lämnas kvar i jorden bland markens gräs, bunden med kedjor av järn och koppar. Av himlens dagg skall den fuktas och ha sin del med djuren bland markens örter. 13 Hans hjärta skall förvandlas så att det inte mer är en människas hjärta, och ett djurs hjärta skall ges åt honom. Sju tider skall gå fram över honom. 14 Så är det förordnat genom väktarna, och så är det befallt i denna sak av de heliga, för att de levande skall veta att den Högste råder över människors riken och ger dem åt vem han vill. Ja, han upphöjer den ringaste bland människor till att härska över dem. 15 Sådan var den dröm som jag, kung Nebukadnessar, hade. Men du, Beltesassar, uttyd den nu, för ingen av alla de vise i mitt rike kan ge mig uttydningen, men du kan det, ty heliga gudars ande bor i dig."
16 Då stod Daniel, som också kallades Beltesassar, en stund bestört, full av oroliga tankar. Men kungen tog till orda igen och sade: "Beltesassar, låt inte drömmen och vad den betyder skrämma dig." Beltesassar sade: "Min herre, o att drömmen hade gällt dem som hatar dig, och dess betydelse dina fiender. 17 Trädet som du såg, som var stort och väldigt och så högt att det räckte upp till himlen och syntes över hela jorden, 18 och som hade ett så vackert lövverk och bar så mycket frukt att det hade föda åt alla, trädet som markens djur bodde under och på vars grenar himlens fåglar hade sina nästen, 19 det är du själv, o konung. Du har ju blivit stor och väldig, och din storhet har vuxit och når upp till himlen, och ditt välde sträcker sig till jordens ände. 20 Men att konungen såg en helig väktare stiga ner från himlen och säga: "Hugg ner trädet och förstör det. Dock må stubben med rötterna lämnas kvar i jorden, bunden med kedjor av järn och koppar bland markens gräs. Av himlens dagg skall den fuktas och ha sin del bland markens djur, till dess att sju tider har gått fram över honom", 21 det betyder, o konung, och detta är den Högstes beslut som har drabbat min herre konungen: 22 Du skall stötas ut från människorna och tvingas bo bland markens djur och äta gräs som en oxe och fuktas av himlens dagg. Sju tider skall gå fram över dig till dess du har insett att den Högste råder över människors riken och ger dem åt vem han vill. 23 Men att det gavs befallning om att trädets stubbe med rötterna skulle lämnas kvar, det betyder att du skall få tillbaka ditt rike när du har besinnat att det är himlen som har makten. 24 Därför, o konung, låt mitt råd behaga dig: Gör dig fri från dina synder genom att göra gott och från dina missgärningar genom att vara barmhärtig mot de fattiga, om din framgång skall bestå."
25 Allt detta hände med kung Nebukadnessar. 26 Tolv månader senare, när kungen en gång gick omkring på taket av det kungliga palatset i Babel, 27 tog han till orda och sade: "Se, detta är det stora Babel som jag har byggt upp till ett kungavälde genom min krafts styrka, min härlighet till ära!"
28 Medan ordet ännu var i kungens mun kom en röst från himlen: "Till dig, kung Nebukadnessar, skall det sägas: Ditt rike har tagits ifrån dig. 29 Du skall stötas ut från människorna och tvingas bo bland markens djur och äta gräs som en oxe. Så skall sju tider gå fram över dig, till dess att du har insett att den Högste råder över människors riken och ger dem åt vem han vill."
30 I samma ögonblick gick det ordet i uppfyllelse på Nebukadnessar. Han stöttes ut från människorna och måste äta gräs som en oxe. Himlens dagg fuktade hans kropp till dess att hans hår växte och blev som örnfjädrar och till dess att hans naglar blev som fågelklor.
31 Men när den tiden hade gått lyfte jag, Nebukadnessar, upp mina ögon till himlen och fick tillbaka mitt förstånd. Då lovade jag den Högste, jag prisade och ärade honom som lever i evighet.
Hans välde är ett evigt välde,
hans rike varar från släkte till släkte.
32 Alla som bor på jorden räknas för intet,
han gör vad han vill med himlens här
och med dem som bor på jorden.
Ingen kan stå emot hans hand
eller säga till honom: "Vad är det du gör?"
33 Vid samma tid återfick jag mitt förstånd och jag fick tillbaka min härlighet och glans, mitt rike och min ära. Mina rådsherrar och stormän sökte upp mig, och jag blev på nytt insatt i mitt rike och fick ännu större makt. 34 Nu prisar, upphöjer och ärar jag, Nebukadnessar, himmelens Konung, ty alla hans gärningar är sanning och hans vägar rätta, och han kan ödmjuka dem som vandrar i högmod.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Second Dream
4 [a]King Nebuchadnezzar to all peoples, nations, and languages that live throughout the earth: May you have abundant prosperity!(A) 2 The signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked for me I am pleased to recount.(B)
3 How great are his signs,
how mighty his wonders!
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and his sovereignty is from generation to generation.(C)
4 [b]I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living at ease in my home and prospering in my palace.(D) 5 I saw a dream that frightened me; my fantasies in bed and the visions of my head terrified me.(E) 6 So I made a decree that all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me, in order that they might tell me the interpretation of the dream.(F) 7 Then the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the diviners came in, and I told them the dream, but they could not tell me its interpretation.(G) 8 At last Daniel came in before me—he who was named Belteshazzar after the name of my god and who is endowed with a spirit of the holy gods[c]—and I told him the dream:(H) 9 “O Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, I know that you are endowed with a spirit of the holy gods[d] and that no mystery is too difficult for you. Hear[e] the dream that I saw, and tell me its interpretation.(I)
10 [f]Upon my bed this is what I saw:
there was a tree at the center of the earth,
and its height was great.(J)
11 The tree grew great and strong,
its top reached to heaven,
and it was visible to the ends of the whole earth.
12 Its foliage was beautiful,
its fruit abundant,
and it provided food for all.
The animals of the field found shade under it,
the birds of the air nested in its branches,
and from it all living beings were fed.(K)
13 “I continued looking, in the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and there was a holy watcher coming down from heaven.(L) 14 He cried aloud and said:
‘Cut down the tree and chop off its branches;
strip off its foliage and scatter its fruit.
Let the animals flee from beneath it
and the birds from its branches.(M)
15 But leave its stump and roots in the ground,
with a band of iron and bronze,
in the tender grass of the field.
Let him be bathed with the dew of heaven,
and let his lot be with the animals
in the grass of the earth.
16 Let his mind be changed from that of a human,
and let the mind of an animal be given to him.
And let seven times pass over him.(N)
17 The sentence is rendered by decree of the watchers,
the decision is given by order of the holy ones,
in order that all who live may know
that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdom of mortals;
he gives it to whom he will
and sets over it the lowliest of human beings.’(O)
18 “This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. Now you, Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, since all the wise men of my kingdom are unable to tell me the interpretation. You are able, however, for you are endowed with a spirit of the holy gods.”[g](P)
Daniel Interprets the Second Dream
19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was severely distressed for a while. His thoughts terrified him. The king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or the interpretation terrify you.” Belteshazzar answered, “My lord, may the dream be for those who hate you and its interpretation for your enemies!(Q) 20 The tree that you saw, which grew great and strong so that its top reached to heaven and was visible to the whole earth,(R) 21 whose foliage was beautiful and its fruit abundant, and which provided food for all, under which animals of the field lived and in whose branches the birds of the air had nests— 22 it is you, O king! You have grown great and strong. Your greatness has increased and reaches to heaven, and your sovereignty to the ends of the earth.(S) 23 And whereas the king saw a holy watcher coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave its stump and roots in the ground, with a band of iron and bronze, in the grass of the field, and let him be bathed with the dew of heaven, and let his lot be with the animals of the field, until seven times pass over him’(T)— 24 this is the interpretation, O king, and it is a decree of the Most High that has come upon my lord the king: 25 You shall be driven away from human society, and your dwelling shall be with the wild animals. You shall be made to eat grass like oxen, you shall be bathed with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, until you have learned that the Most High has sovereignty over the kingdom of mortals and gives it to whom he will.(U) 26 As it was commanded to leave the stump and roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be reestablished for you from the time that you learn that Heaven is sovereign.(V) 27 Therefore, O king, may my counsel be acceptable to you: atone for[h] your sins with righteousness and your iniquities with mercy to the oppressed, so that your prosperity may be prolonged.”(W)
Nebuchadnezzar’s Humiliation
28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar.(X) 29 At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 and the king said, “Is this not magnificent Babylon, which I have built as a royal capital by my mighty power and for my glorious majesty?”(Y) 31 While the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice came down from heaven: “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is declared: The kingdom is taken from you!(Z) 32 You shall be driven away from human society, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field. You shall be made to eat grass like oxen, and seven times shall pass over you, until you have learned that the Most High has sovereignty over the kingdom of mortals and gives it to whom he will.” 33 Immediately the sentence was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven away from human society, he ate grass like oxen, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven, until his hair grew as long as eagles’ feathers and his nails became like birds’ claws.(AA)
Nebuchadnezzar Praises God
34 When that period was over, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me.
I blessed the Most High
and praised and honored the one who lives forever.
For his sovereignty is an everlasting sovereignty,
and his kingdom endures from generation to generation.(AB)
35 All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,
and he does what he wills with the host of heaven
and the inhabitants of the earth.
There is no one who can stay his hand
or say to him, “What have you done?”(AC)
36 At that time my reason returned to me, and my majesty and splendor were restored to me for the glory of my kingdom. My counselors and my lords sought me out, I was reestablished over my kingdom, and still more greatness was added to me.(AD) 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven,
for all his works are truth,
and his ways are justice;
he is able to bring low
those who walk in pride.(AE)

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream of a Tree
4 [a]King Nebuchadnezzar,
To the nations and peoples of every language,(A) who live in all the earth:
May you prosper greatly!(B)
2 It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs(C) and wonders that the Most High God(D) has performed for me.
3 How great are his signs,
how mighty his wonders!(E)
His kingdom is an eternal kingdom;
his dominion endures(F) from generation to generation.
4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented(G) and prosperous. 5 I had a dream(H) that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed,(I) the images and visions that passed through my mind(J) terrified me.(K) 6 So I commanded that all the wise men of Babylon be brought before me to interpret(L) the dream for me. 7 When the magicians,(M) enchanters, astrologers[b] and diviners(N) came, I told them the dream, but they could not interpret it for me.(O) 8 Finally, Daniel came into my presence and I told him the dream. (He is called Belteshazzar,(P) after the name of my god, and the spirit of the holy gods(Q) is in him.)
9 I said, “Belteshazzar, chief(R) of the magicians, I know that the spirit of the holy gods(S) is in you, and no mystery is too difficult for you. Here is my dream; interpret it for me. 10 These are the visions I saw while lying in bed:(T) I looked, and there before me stood a tree in the middle of the land. Its height was enormous.(U) 11 The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky; it was visible to the ends of the earth.(V) 12 Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all. Under it the wild animals found shelter, and the birds lived in its branches;(W) from it every creature was fed.
13 “In the visions I saw while lying in bed,(X) I looked, and there before me was a holy one,(Y) a messenger,[c] coming down from heaven. 14 He called in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree(Z) and trim off its branches; strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. Let the animals flee from under it and the birds from its branches.(AA) 15 But let the stump and its roots, bound with iron and bronze, remain in the ground, in the grass of the field.
“‘Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the animals among the plants of the earth. 16 Let his mind be changed from that of a man and let him be given the mind of an animal, till seven times[d] pass by for him.(AB)
17 “‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High(AC) is sovereign(AD) over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest(AE) of people.’
18 “This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me what it means, for none of the wise men in my kingdom can interpret it for me.(AF) But you can,(AG) because the spirit of the holy gods(AH) is in you.”(AI)
Daniel Interprets the Dream
19 Then Daniel (also called Belteshazzar) was greatly perplexed for a time, and his thoughts terrified(AJ) him. So the king said, “Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or its meaning alarm you.”(AK)
Belteshazzar answered, “My lord, if only the dream applied to your enemies and its meaning to your adversaries! 20 The tree you saw, which grew large and strong, with its top touching the sky, visible to the whole earth, 21 with beautiful leaves and abundant fruit, providing food for all, giving shelter to the wild animals, and having nesting places in its branches for the birds(AL)— 22 Your Majesty, you are that tree!(AM) You have become great and strong; your greatness has grown until it reaches the sky, and your dominion extends to distant parts of the earth.(AN)
23 “Your Majesty saw a holy one,(AO) a messenger, coming down from heaven and saying, ‘Cut down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump, bound with iron and bronze, in the grass of the field, while its roots remain in the ground. Let him be drenched with the dew of heaven; let him live with the wild animals, until seven times pass by for him.’(AP)
24 “This is the interpretation, Your Majesty, and this is the decree(AQ) the Most High has issued against my lord the king: 25 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox and be drenched(AR) with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High(AS) is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.(AT) 26 The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots(AU) means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules.(AV) 27 Therefore, Your Majesty, be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right, and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed.(AW) It may be that then your prosperity(AX) will continue.(AY)”
The Dream Is Fulfilled
28 All this happened(AZ) to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory(BA) of my majesty?”(BB)
31 Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you.(BC) 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”(BD)
33 Immediately what had been said about Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled. He was driven away from people and ate grass like the ox. His body was drenched(BE) with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird.(BF)
34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity(BG) was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever.(BH)
His dominion is an eternal dominion;
his kingdom(BI) endures from generation to generation.(BJ)
35 All the peoples of the earth
are regarded as nothing.(BK)
He does as he pleases(BL)
with the powers of heaven
and the peoples of the earth.
No one can hold back(BM) his hand(BN)
or say to him: “What have you done?”(BO)
36 At the same time that my sanity was restored, my honor and splendor were returned to me for the glory of my kingdom.(BP) My advisers and nobles sought me out, and I was restored to my throne and became even greater than before. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and exalt(BQ) and glorify(BR) the King of heaven, because everything he does is right and all his ways are just.(BS) And those who walk in pride(BT) he is able to humble.(BU)
