King Nebuchadnezzar's letter
4 This is a message from King Nebuchadnezzar.
I am sending this message to everyone in the world, the people in every nation, who speak every language. I hope that you all may have good and happy lives.
2 I am happy to tell you about the powerful God who rules over everything.
He has done miracles and great things for me.
3 His miracles show his great strength.
They are very powerful.
His kingdom will continue for ever.
He will always rule.
4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace. I was comfortable and happy. Everything was very good for me. 5 Then I had a dream that made me very afraid. The thoughts in my mind gave me great trouble as I lay on my bed. 6 So I told all the wise men in Babylon to come to me. I wanted them to tell me what the dream meant.
7 When the magicians, enchanters, wise men and diviners came to me, I told them the dream. But none of them could tell me what the dream meant. 8 Last of all, Daniel came to me and I told him the dream. I call him Belteshazzar, like my god's name. The spirit of the holy gods is in this man, Daniel.
9 I said to him, ‘Belteshazzar you are the leader of my wise men. I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you. I know that no secret is too difficult for you to explain. Here is the dream that I saw. Tell me what it means.
10 This is the vision that I saw in my mind while I lay on my bed. I saw a tree there in front of me. It stood in the middle of the earth and it was very tall. 11 The tree grew taller and stronger. Its top touched the sky, so that everyone in the world could see it. 12 It had beautiful leaves and lots of fruits. There was enough food on it for everyone. Wild animals could live in its shade. Birds lived in its branches. It gave food for every living thing.
13 The vision in my mind continued while I lay on my bed. I saw a holy angel that came down from heaven. 14 The angel shouted aloud, “Cut down the tree. Cut off its branches. Tear off its leaves. Let its fruits go away to other places. The animals that are under the tree must run away. The birds that are in its branches must fly away. 15 But leave the base of the tree and its roots in the ground. Tie iron and bronze round it. Then leave it there in the grass.[a]
Make him wet with dew from the sky. Cause him to live with the animals in the fields of grass. 16 Take his human mind away from him. Instead, give him the mind of an animal for seven years.
17 The holy angels who take care of the earth have decided this. It is their command. Now everyone will be sure that the powerful God above rules over human kingdoms. He gives authority to rule to anyone that he chooses. He causes humble men to rule as kings.” ’
18 Then I said to Belteshazzar, ‘This is the dream that I, King Nebuchadnezzar, had. Now, you must tell me what it means. None of the wise men in any region of my kingdom can tell me what it means. But you can tell me, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.’
Daniel explains the king's dream
19 Daniel, whose other name was Belteshazzar, was upset for a short time. His thoughts caused him a lot of trouble. The king said, ‘Belteshazzar, do not let the dream or what it means cause you trouble.’
Then Belteshazzar answered the king. ‘Sir, I would like the dream to be about your enemies and not about you. 20 You saw a tree that grew very tall and strong until its top touched the sky. Everyone in the world could see it. 21 It had beautiful leaves and lots of fruits. There was enough food on it for everyone. The wild animals lived under its shade. The birds built their nests in its branches. 22 You, the king, are like that tree. You have become great and strong. Your power reaches up to the sky. Your authority reaches to the ends of the world.
23 In your dream, you saw a holy angel who came down from heaven. He said, “Cut down the tree and destroy it. But leave the base of the tree and its roots in the ground. Tie iron and bronze round it. Then leave it in the grass. Make him wet with dew from the sky. Cause him to live in the fields with the wild animals for seven years.”
24 Now sir, this is what the dream means. The powerful God above has decided what he will do to my lord, the king. 25 People will chase you away from the city, so that you have to live with the wild animals. You will eat grass like cows do. Dew from the sky will make you wet. You will live in that way for seven years. Then you will understand that the powerful God above rules over human kingdoms. He gives authority to rule to anyone that he chooses. 26 The command was to leave the base of the tree and its roots in the ground. This means that you will be king again later. But before that, you will have to understand that it is God in heaven who rules. 27 So King Nebuchadnezzar, please do as I suggest. Stop doing bad things. Start to do things that are right. Turn away from your sins. Instead, be kind to poor people. Then, perhaps, you will continue to be comfortable and happy.’
28 All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 One year later, he was walking on the flat roof of the king's palace in Babylon. 30 The king said, ‘Look how great Babylon is! It is the city that I have built to be my home as king. It shows that I am a great and powerful king!’
31 While King Nebuchadnezzar was still boasting about his power, he heard a voice from heaven. It said, ‘I am speaking to you, King Nebuchadnezzar. I have taken away your authority to rule as king! 32 People will chase you away from the city so that you live with the wild animals. You will eat grass as cows do. I will cause you to live like that for seven years. Then you will understand that the powerful God above rules over human kingdoms. He gives authority to rule to anyone that he chooses.’
33 Immediately the message given to Nebuchadnezzar really happened. People chased him away from the city. He ate grass as cows do. Dew from the sky made his body wet. His hair grew very long, like the feathers of an eagle. His feet became like a bird's feet.
God makes Nebuchadnezzar better
34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up towards heaven. My own mind returned to me again. I praised the powerful God above who lives for ever. I worshipped him as a great God.
His kingdom will continue for ever.
He will always have authority to rule.
35 All the people on the earth seem like nothing to him.
He does whatever he wants among the angels in heaven,
and among the people on the earth too.
Nobody can stop him.
Nobody can ask him, ‘Why are you doing that?’
36 When my own mind returned to me, I also received my authority again as king. People respected me as a great king again. My officers and important men came back to work with me. I ruled again over my kingdom. I became even greater than I was before. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise the King of heaven as a great God. He always does what is right and fair. When people are proud, he can cause them to become humble.

Nebuchadnezzar Praises God
4 [a] King Nebuchadnezzar to all (A)peoples, nations, and languages, (B)that dwell in all the earth: (C)Peace be multiplied to you! 2 It has seemed good to me to show the (D)signs and wonders that the (E)Most High God has done for me.
3 How great are (F)his signs,
how mighty his (G)wonders!
(H)His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
(I)and his dominion endures from generation to generation.
Nebuchadnezzar's Second Dream
4 [b] I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at ease in my house and prospering in my palace. 5 I saw a dream that made me afraid. As I lay in bed the fancies and (J)the visions of my head alarmed me. 6 So (K)I made a decree that (L)all the wise men of Babylon should be brought before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. 7 Then (M)the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the astrologers came in, and I told them the dream, but (N)they could not make known to me its interpretation. 8 At last Daniel came in before me—he who was named (O)Belteshazzar after the name of my god, and in whom is (P)the spirit of the holy gods[c]—and I told him the dream, saying, 9 “O Belteshazzar, (Q)chief of the magicians, because I know that (R)the spirit of the holy gods is in you and that no (S)mystery is too difficult for you, tell me (T)the visions of my dream that I saw and their interpretation. 10 (U)The visions of my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw, and (V)behold, a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. 11 (W)The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth. 12 (X)Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all. (Y)The beasts of the field found shade under it, and (Z)the birds of the heavens lived in its branches, and all flesh was fed from it.
13 “I saw in (AA)the visions of my head as I lay in bed, and behold, (AB)a watcher, (AC)a holy one, came down from heaven. 14 He (AD)proclaimed aloud and said thus: (AE)‘Chop down the tree and (AF)lop off its branches, (AG)strip off its leaves and scatter its fruit. (AH)Let the beasts flee from under it and the birds from its branches. 15 But leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, amid the tender grass of the field. Let him be wet with the dew of heaven. Let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth. 16 Let his mind be changed from a man's, and let a beast's mind be given to him; (AI)and let seven periods of time (AJ)pass over him. 17 The sentence is by the decree of (AK)the watchers, the decision by the word of (AL)the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High (AM)rules the kingdom of men (AN)and gives it to whom he will and (AO)sets over it the lowliest of men.’ 18 This dream I, King Nebuchadnezzar, saw. And you, O (AP)Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because (AQ)all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation, but you are able, for (AR)the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”
Daniel Interprets the Second Dream
19 Then Daniel, whose name was (AS)Belteshazzar, was (AT)dismayed for a while, and (AU)his thoughts alarmed him. The king answered and said, “Belteshazzar, let not the dream or the interpretation alarm you.” Belteshazzar answered and said, “My lord, (AV)may the dream be for those who hate you (AW)and its interpretation for your enemies! 20 (AX)The tree you saw, which grew and became strong, so that its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth, 21 (AY)whose leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in which was food for all, under which beasts of the field found shade, and in whose branches the birds of the heavens lived— 22 (AZ)it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong. (BA)Your greatness has grown and reaches to heaven, (BB)and your dominion to the ends of the earth. 23 And because the king saw (BC)a watcher, a holy one, coming down from heaven and saying, (BD)‘Chop down the tree and destroy it, but leave the stump of its roots in the earth, bound with a band of iron and bronze, in the tender grass of the field, and let him be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till (BE)seven periods of time pass over him,’ 24 this is the interpretation, O king: It is a decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king, 25 (BF)that you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. You shall be made (BG)to eat grass like an ox, and you shall be wet with the dew of heaven, and (BH)seven periods of time shall pass over you, till (BI)you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will. 26 And as it was commanded (BJ)to leave the stump of the roots of the tree, your kingdom shall be confirmed for you from the time that you know that Heaven rules. 27 Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you: break off your sins by (BK)practicing righteousness, (BL)and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed, (BM)that there may perhaps be a lengthening of your prosperity.”
Nebuchadnezzar's Humiliation
28 All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 and the king answered and said, (BN)“Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by (BO)my mighty power as a royal residence and for (BP)the glory of my majesty?” 31 (BQ)While the words were still in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, 32 (BR)and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, (BS)until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.” 33 Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. (BT)He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles' feathers, and his nails were like birds' claws.
Nebuchadnezzar Restored
34 (BU)At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and (BV)my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored (BW)him who lives forever,
(BX)for his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
and (BY)his kingdom endures from generation to generation;
35 (BZ)all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing,
and (CA)he does according to his will among the host of heaven
and among the inhabitants of the earth;
(CB)and none can stay his hand
or (CC)say to him, “What have you done?”
36 At the same time (CD)my reason returned to me, and for (CE)the glory of my kingdom, (CF)my majesty and splendor returned to me. (CG)My counselors and (CH)my lords sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and still more greatness was (CI)added to me. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, (CJ)praise and extol and honor the (CK)King of heaven, (CL)for all his works are right and his ways are just; and (CM)those who walk in pride he is able to humble.

2 Mi è parso bene di far conoscere i segni e i prodigi che il Dio altissimo ha fatto per me. 3 Come sono grandi i suoi segni! Come sono potenti i suoi prodigi! Il suo regno è un regno eterno e il suo dominio dura di generazione in generazione.
4 Io, Nabucodonosor, ero tranquillo in casa mia e felice nel mio palazzo. 5 Ebbi un sogno che mi spaventò. I pensieri che mi assalivano mentre ero a letto e le visioni del mio spirito mi riempirono di terrore. 6 Ordinai, perciò, di condurre in mia presenza tutti i saggi di Babilonia perché mi dessero l’interpretazione del sogno. 7 Allora vennero i magi, gli incantatori, i Caldei e gli astrologi; io raccontai loro il sogno, ma essi non poterono darmene l’interpretazione. 8 Infine si presentò davanti a me Daniele, detto Baltazzar, dal nome del mio dio, e nel quale è lo spirito degli dèi santi, e io gli raccontai il sogno: 9 “Baltazzar, capo dei magi, io so che lo spirito degli dèi santi è in te e che nessun mistero ti mette in difficoltà. Le bestie dei campi si riparavano sotto la sua ombra, gli uccelli del cielo abitavano fra i suoi rami e ogni creatura si nutriva del suo frutto. 13 Nelle visioni che ebbi, mentre ero a letto, vidi uno dei santi veglianti scendere dal cielo 14 e gridare con forza: ‘Abbattete l’albero e tagliate i suoi rami; scotete il fogliame e disperdete il suo frutto; fuggano gli animali dalla sua ombra e gli uccelli dai suoi rami! 15 Però lasciate in terra il ceppo e le sue radici, ma legati con catene di ferro e di bronzo, tra l’erba dei campi; sia bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo e, come gli animali, abbia in sorte l’erba della terra. 16 Gli sia cambiato il cuore: invece di un cuore umano, gli sia dato un cuore di bestia, e passino su di lui sette tempi. 17 Questa è la decisione dei veglianti, e la sentenza proviene dai santi, affinché i viventi sappiano che l’Altissimo domina sul regno degli uomini e che egli lo dà a chi vuole, e vi innalza il più misero degli uomini’. 18 Questo è il sogno che io, il re Nabucodonosor, ho fatto; ora tu, Baltazzar, dammene l’interpretazione, perché nessuno dei saggi del mio regno è in grado di darmela; ma tu puoi, perché lo spirito degli dèi santi è in te”».
19 Allora Daniele, detto Baltazzar, rimase per un momento sbigottito e i suoi pensieri lo turbavano. Ma il re gli disse: «Baltazzar, il sogno e l’interpretazione non ti spaventino!» Baltazzar rispose e disse: «Mio signore, il sogno si avveri per i tuoi nemici, e la sua interpretazione per i tuoi avversari! 20 L’albero che il re ha visto e che era diventato alto e robusto, al punto che la sua altezza giungeva al cielo ed era visibile dalle estremità della terra, 21 l’albero dal fogliame bello, dal frutto abbondante in grado di nutrire tutti, sotto il quale si riparavano le bestie dei campi e tra i cui rami abitavano gli uccelli del cielo, 22 sei tu, o re! Tu sei diventato grande e potente: la tua grandezza giunge fino al cielo e il tuo dominio si estende fino alle estremità della terra. 23 Poi il re ha visto un santo vegliante che scendeva dal cielo e diceva: “Abbattete l’albero e distruggetelo, però lasciate in terra il ceppo e le sue radici, legati con catene di ferro e di bronzo, fra l’erba dei campi; sia bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo e abbia la sua parte con gli animali della campagna finché siano passati sopra di lui sette tempi”. 24 Questa è l’interpretazione, o re; è un decreto dell’Altissimo, che sarà eseguito sul re mio signore: 25 tu sarai scacciato di mezzo agli uomini e abiterai con le bestie dei campi; ti daranno da mangiare l’erba come ai buoi e sarai bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo; sette tempi passeranno su di te finché tu riconoscerai che l’Altissimo domina sul regno degli uomini e lo dà a chi vuole. 26 Quanto poi all’ordine di lasciare il ceppo con le radici dell’albero, ciò significa che il tuo regno ti sarà ristabilito, dopo che avrai riconosciuto che il dominio appartiene al cielo. 27 Perciò, o re, accetta il mio consiglio! Metti fine ai tuoi peccati praticando la giustizia, e alle tue iniquità mostrando compassione verso gli afflitti. Forse la tua prosperità potrà essere prolungata».
28 (B)Tutto questo avvenne al re Nabucodonosor. 29 Dodici mesi dopo, mentre passeggiava sul terrazzo del palazzo reale di Babilonia, 30 il re disse: «Non è questa la grande Babilonia che io ho costruita come residenza reale con la forza della mia potenza e per la gloria della mia maestà?» 31 Il re aveva ancora la parola sulle labbra, quando una voce venne dal cielo e disse: «Sappi, o re Nabucodonosor, che il tuo regno ti è tolto; 32 tu sarai scacciato di mezzo agli uomini e abiterai con le bestie dei campi, ti daranno da mangiare erba come ai buoi e passeranno sette tempi sopra di te, finché tu riconoscerai che l’Altissimo domina sul regno degli uomini e lo dà a chi vuole». 33 Nello stesso istante quella parola si adempì su Nabucodonosor. Egli fu scacciato di mezzo agli uomini, mangiò l’erba come i buoi, il suo corpo fu bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo, i capelli gli crebbero come le penne delle aquile e le sue unghie diventarono come quelle degli uccelli.
34 «Alla fine di quei giorni, io, Nabucodonosor, alzai gli occhi al cielo e la ragione tornò in me. Benedissi l’Altissimo, lodai e glorificai colui che vive in eterno: il suo dominio è un dominio eterno e il suo regno dura di generazione in generazione. 35 Tutti gli abitanti della terra sono un nulla davanti a lui; egli agisce come vuole con l’esercito del cielo e con gli abitanti della terra, e non c’è nessuno che possa fermare la sua mano o dirgli: “Che fai?” 36 In quel tempo la ragione tornò in me; la gloria del mio regno, la mia maestà e il mio splendore mi furono restituiti; i miei consiglieri e i miei grandi mi cercarono, io fui ristabilito nel mio regno e la mia grandezza fu superiore a quella che avevo prima. 37 Ora io, Nabucodonosor, lodo, esalto e glorifico il Re del cielo, perché tutte le sue opere sono vere e le sue vie giuste, ed egli ha il potere di umiliare quelli che procedono con superbia».

4 Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.
2 I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me.
3 How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.
4 I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house, and flourishing in my palace:
5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.
6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream.
7 Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof.
8 But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my God, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying,
9 O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof.
10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great.
11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth:
12 The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof, and all flesh was fed of it.
13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven;
14 He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off his branches, shake off his leaves, and scatter his fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from his branches:
15 Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth:
16 Let his heart be changed from man's, and let a beast's heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him.
17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.
18 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies.
20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto the heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth;
21 Whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was meat for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation:
22 It is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong: for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.
23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew the tree down, and destroy it; yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven, and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him;
24 This is the interpretation, O king, and this is the decree of the most High, which is come upon my lord the king:
25 That they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.
26 And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree roots; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule.
27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.
28 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar.
29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon.
30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty?
31 While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.
32 And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will.
33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws.
34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:
35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me.
37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
