The Image of Gold and the Blazing Furnace
3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image(A) of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide,[a] and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. 2 He then summoned the satraps,(B) prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials(C) to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.
4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language,(D) this is what you are commanded to do: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp,(E) pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image(F) of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.(G) 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”(H)
7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the nations and peoples of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.(I)
8 At this time some astrologers[b](J) came forward and denounced the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever!(K) 10 Your Majesty has issued a decree(L) that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold,(M) 11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(N)—who pay no attention(O) to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”(P)
13 Furious(Q) with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods(R) or worship the image(S) of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god(T) will be able to rescue(U) you from my hand?”
16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(V) replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver(W) us from it, and he will deliver(X) us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.(Y)”
19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven(Z) times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(AA) and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,(AB) 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.
24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”
They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”
25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”
26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,(AC) come out! Come here!”
So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers(AD) crowded around them.(AE) They saw that the fire(AF) had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.
28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel(AG) and rescued(AH) his servants! They trusted(AI) in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.(AJ) 29 Therefore I decree(AK) that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble,(AL) for no other god can save(AM) in this way.”
30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.(AN)

Daniels venner nægter at tilbede den gyldne statue
3 Kong Nebukadnezar lod fremstille en forgyldt statue, der var 27 m høj og 2,7 m bred, og den blev opstillet på Durasletten i provinsen Babylon. 2 Derpå sendte han bud til alle sine statholdere, generaler, administratorer, rådgivere, skatmestre, dommere, jurister og andre embedsmænd i provinsen og inviterede dem til indvielse af statuen. 3 Da de alle sammen var ankommet og havde taget opstilling foran statuen, 4 råbte kongens herold så højt, han kunne: „Hør, hvad kongen har befalet mennesker af alle folkeslag, stammer og sprog at gøre: 5 Når orkestret med alle dets forskellige instrumenter begynder at spille, skal I falde på knæ med ansigtet mod jorden og tilbede kong Nebukadnezars gyldne statue! 6 Hvis nogen ikke gør det, bliver de kastet i den gloende ovn!”
7 Da orkestret med alle dets forskellige instrumenter begyndte at spille, faldt alle de tilstedeværende fra alle folkeslag, stammer og sprog på knæ med ansigtet mod jorden og tilbad Nebukadnezars gyldne statue.
8 Inden længe kom nogle af kaldæerne[a] til kongen for at anklage judæerne. 9 „Deres Majestæt længe leve!” sagde de. 10 „De har påbudt, at når orkestret med alle dets instrumenter spiller, skal alle falde på knæ og tilbede den gyldne statue, 11 og De har bestemt, at de, der nægter at gøre det, skal kastes i den gloende ovn. 12 Men der er nogle judæiske mænd, som ikke retter sig efter Deres påbud. Det drejer sig om Shadrak, Meshak og Abed-Nego, som De har sat til at administrere provinsen Babylon. De judæere nægter at dyrke Deres gud og tilbede den statue, De har ladet opstille.”
13 Nebukadnezar blev rasende og lod straks Shadrak, Meshak og Abed-Nego hente. Da de blev ført frem for ham, sagde han: 14 „Shadrak, Meshak og Abed-Nego, er det for at trodse mig, at I ikke vil dyrke min gud og tilbede den statue, jeg har ladet opstille? 15 Jeg giver jer én chance mere! Hvis I falder på knæ og tilbeder min statue, når orkestret med alle dets instrumenter om lidt begynder at spille igen, så vil jeg tilgive jer. Men hvis I ikke gør det, bliver I omgående kastet i den gloende ovn. Og hvilken gud kan så redde jer?”
16 „Ærede Kong Nebukadnezar,” svarede de tre judæere, „vi har ikke gjort noget forkert over for Dem. 17 Men hvis vi alligevel bliver kastet i den gloende ovn, skal De vide, Deres Majestæt, at den Gud, vi tjener, har magt til at redde os. 18 Og skulle han ikke redde os, vil vi dog under ingen omstændigheder dyrke Deres gud eller tilbede den statue, De har ladet opstille.”
19 Da Nebukadnezar hørte det svar, skar han tænder af raseri og befalede, at ovnen skulle gøres syv gange varmere end normalt. 20 Derefter befalede han nogle af sine stærkeste soldater at binde Shadrak, Meshak og Abed-Nego og kaste dem i den gloende ovn.
21 De tre judæere blev bundet med alt tøjet på og ført hen til den gloende ovn. 22 Fordi kongen i sit raseri havde forlangt at få ovnen ekstra ophedet, slikkede store flammer ud og brændte soldaterne ihjel, da de skubbede judæerne ind i ovnen. 23 De tre mænd faldt ned i bunden af ovnen.
24 Kong Nebukadnezar sad og iagttog det hele. Pludselig sprang han op og udbrød bestyrtet til sine rådgivere: „Var det ikke kun tre mænd, vi smed bundne ind i ovnen?”
„Jo,” svarede de.
25 „Jamen, se!” råbte Nebukadnezar. „Der er jo fire! Og de er ikke bundne! De går omkring i ilden helt uberørt af flammerne! Og den fjerde ligner en gud!”
26 Da gik Nebukadnezar så tæt hen til ovndøren, som han kunne, og råbte: „Shadrak, Meshak og Abed-Nego, I er den højeste Guds tjenere. Kom ud igen! Skynd jer!”
Så trådte de tre mænd ud af ilden, 27 og alle statholderne, generalerne, administratorerne og rådgiverne stimlede sammen om dem og så, at ilden ikke havde gjort dem noget. Deres tøj var uskadt, der var ingen brandlugt ved dem, og ikke et hår på deres hoved var svedet!
28 Da sagde Nebukadnezar: „Priset være Shadraks, Meshaks og Abed-Negos Gud! Han sendte sin engel for at frelse sine tjenere, der i tillid til ham trodsede en kongelig befaling og var villige til at dø frem for at tjene eller tilbede nogen anden gud end deres egen. 29 Derfor befaler jeg nu, at hvis noget menneske, uanset hvilket land eller folkeslag de kommer fra, siger et ondt ord om judæernes Gud, bliver han skåret i småstykker og hans hus jævnet med jorden. For ingen gud kan gribe ind og frelse, som denne Gud har gjort!”
30 Derefter genindsatte kongen de tre judæere i deres stillinger i provinsen Babylon.
Nebukadnezars anden drøm
31 Kong Nebukadnezar udsendte senere følgende bekendtgørelse til sine undersåtter fra alle folkeslag, stammer og sprog:
Hilsen med ønsket om alt godt! 32 Jeg ønsker at informere jer om de tegn og undere, den højeste Gud har ladet mig opleve! 33 Hvilke utrolige tegn! Hvilke mægtige undere! Hans rige ophører aldrig. Han hersker over alt og alle fra slægt til slægt.

El rey erige una estatua y ordena adorarla
3 El rey Nabucodonosor mandó hacer una estatua de oro, de treinta metros de alto por tres de ancho. Hizo que la colocaran en la llanura de Dura, provincia de Babilonia. 2 El rey Nabucodonosor convocó a los sátrapas, prefectos, gobernadores, consejeros, tesoreros, juristas y jueces, así como a los que tuviesen alguna autoridad en la provincia, para que asistieran a la dedicación de la estatua que él había mandado erigir. 3 Y así fue. Se reunieron los sátrapas, prefectos, gobernadores, consejeros, tesoreros, juristas y jueces, así como los que tenían alguna autoridad en la provincia, para presenciar la dedicación de la estatua que el rey Nabucodonosor había mandado erigir. Todos formaron ante la estatua erigida por el rey Nabucodonosor. 4 El heraldo proclamó con todas sus fuerzas:
— A la gente de todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas, se les hace saber que, 5 en cuanto oigan el sonido de los cuernos, flautas, cítaras, liras, arpas, zampoñas y demás instrumentos musicales, deberán postrarse para adorar la estatua de oro erigida por el rey Nabucodonosor. 6 Los que no se postren para adorarla serán inmediatamente arrojados al horno ardiente.
7 Así que, en cuanto se oyó el sonido de los cuernos, las flautas, cítaras, liras, arpas, zampoñas y demás instrumentos musicales, la gente congregada de todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas se postró para adorar la estatua de oro erigida por el rey Nabucodonosor.
Los hebreos son denunciados y condenados
8 Entonces algunos caldeos acusaron a los judíos 9 ante el rey Nabucodonosor diciéndole:
— ¡Larga vida al rey! 10 Majestad, tú has decretado que todos los presentes, al oír el sonido de los cuernos, flautas, cítaras, liras, arpas, zampoñas y demás instrumentos musicales, deben postrarse para adorar la estatua de oro. 11 También has decidido que quien no lo haga será arrojado al horno ardiente. 12 Pues bien, hay unos judíos, en concreto Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó, a quienes confiaste la administración de la provincia de Babilonia, que han desoído tu orden. Majestad, esos hombres no dan culto a tu dios ni adoran la estatua de oro erigida por ti.
13 Entonces Nabucodonosor, irritado sobremanera, hizo venir a Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó. En cuanto los trajeron ante el rey, 14 Nabucodonosor les dijo:
— ¿Es verdad, Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó, que ustedes no dan culto a mis dioses ni adoran la estatua de oro erigida por mí? 15 ¿Están ahora dispuestos, en cuanto oigan el sonido de los cuernos, flautas, cítaras, liras, arpas, zampoñas y demás instrumentos musicales, a postrarse para adorar la estatua que he mandado erigir? Lo digo porque, si no la adoran, serán arrojados al instante al horno ardiente. Y entonces, ¿qué dios será capaz de librarlos de mis manos?
16 Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó respondieron al rey Nabucodonosor:
— De ese asunto no tenemos nada que responder. 17 Si el Dios a quien adoramos puede librarnos del horno ardiente y de tu mano, seguro que nos librará, majestad. 18 Pero, aunque no lo hiciera, puedes estar seguro, majestad, que no daremos culto a tus dioses ni adoraremos la estatua de oro que has erigido.
19 Entonces Nabucodonosor, henchido de cólera y con el rostro demudado por la respuesta de Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó, ordenó que encendiesen el horno siete veces más fuerte que de costumbre, 20 que los soldados más fornidos maniatasen a Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó y que los arrojasen en el horno ardiente. 21 Estos tres hombres, una vez maniatados, fueron arrojados en medio del horno ardiente con la ropa que llevaban puesta: túnicas, turbantes, mantos y demás vestimenta. 22 Como la orden del rey había sido tan apremiante y el horno estaba al rojo vivo, las llamaradas abrasaron a los hombres que habían llevado a Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó, 23 mientras los tres jóvenes, Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó, caían maniatados en medio del horno.
Nabucodonosor reconoce el milagro
24 Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor se quedó pasmado, se levantó de golpe y preguntó a sus consejeros:
— ¿No hemos arrojado a las llamas a tres hombres maniatados?
Le respondieron:
— Cierto, majestad.
25 El rey insistió:
— Pues yo estoy viendo cuatro hombres que pasean desatados en medio del fuego, sin quemarse. ¡Y el cuarto tiene todo el aspecto de un hijo de los dioses!
26 Entonces Nabucodonosor se arrimó más a la boca del horno ardiente y gritó:
— Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó, siervos del Dios Altísimo, salgan y vengan.
Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó salieron de en medio del fuego.
27 Los sátrapas, prefectos, gobernadores y consejeros del rey se acercaron a examinar a aquellos hombres: las llamas no habían tocado sus cuerpos ni les habían chamuscado los cabellos; seguían con las túnicas intactas y ni siquiera olían a humo.
28 Nabucodonosor exclamó:
— Bendito sea el Dios de Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó, que ha enviado a su ángel para liberar a sus siervos. Ellos, confiando en él, desobedecieron la orden del rey y expusieron sus cuerpos a la muerte antes que dar culto y adorar a otro dios fuera del suyo. 29 Ordeno, pues, que toda persona, del pueblo, nación o lengua que sea, que hable mal del Dios de Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó, sea cortado en pedazos y su casa convertida en basurero, pues no existe otro dios capaz de salvar como este.
30 Después el rey encomendó cargos de gobierno a Sadrac, Mesac y Abednegó en la provincia de Babilonia.
El sueño del árbol
31 El rey Nabucodonosor, a la gente de todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas de toda la tierra: ¡Que su paz aumente día a día! 32 Me complace hacerlos partícipes de las señales y prodigios que el Dios Altísimo ha tenido a bien hacer conmigo.
33 ¡Qué grandes son sus señales,
qué poderosos sus prodigios!
¡Su reino es un reino eterno,
su imperio no tiene fin!

3 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.
2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
3 Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
4 Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages,
5 That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up:
6 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
7 Therefore at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of musick, all the people, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
8 Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews.
9 They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever.
10 Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, shall fall down and worship the golden image:
11 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.
12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
13 Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Then they brought these men before the king.
14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?
15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.
17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.
18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
19 Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times more than it was wont to be heated.
20 And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace.
21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.
22 Therefore because the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flames of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.
24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste, and spake, and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king.
25 He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.
26 Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake, and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, came forth of the midst of the fire.
27 And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.
28 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.
29 Therefore I make a decree, That every people, nation, and language, which speak any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill: because there is no other God that can deliver after this sort.
30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, in the province of Babylon.
