3 El rey Nabucodonosor hizo una estatua[a] de oro(A) cuya altura era de 60 codos (27 metros) y su anchura de 6 codos (2.7 metros). La levantó en el llano de Dura, en la provincia de Babilonia(B). 2 Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor mandó reunir a los sátrapas, prefectos y gobernadores, los consejeros, tesoreros, jueces, magistrados y todos los gobernantes de las provincias para que vinieran a la dedicación de la estatua que el rey Nabucodonosor había levantado(C).

3 Se reunieron, pues, los sátrapas, prefectos y gobernadores, los consejeros, tesoreros, jueces, magistrados y todos los gobernantes de las provincias para la dedicación de la estatua que el rey Nabucodonosor había levantado. Y todos estaban de pie delante de la estatua que Nabucodonosor había levantado. 4 Entonces el heraldo proclamó con fuerza: «Se les ordena a ustedes, pueblos, naciones y lenguas(D), 5 que en el momento en que oigan el sonido del cuerno, la flauta, la lira[b], el arpa[c], el salterio[d], la gaita y toda clase de música, se postren y adoren la estatua de oro que el rey Nabucodonosor ha levantado(E). 6 Pero el que no se postre y adore, será echado inmediatamente[e] en un horno de fuego ardiente(F)».

7 Por tanto, en el momento en que todos los pueblos oyeron el sonido del cuerno, la flauta, la lira, el arpa, el salterio, la gaita[f] y toda clase de música, todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas se postraron y adoraron la estatua de oro que el rey Nabucodonosor había levantado.

8 Sin embargo[g], en aquel tiempo algunos caldeos se presentaron(G) y acusaron a[h] los judíos(H). 9 Hablaron y dijeron al rey Nabucodonosor: «¡Oh rey, viva para siempre(I)! 10 Usted, oh rey, ha proclamado un decreto de que todo hombre que oiga el sonido del cuerno, la flauta, la lira, el arpa, el salterio, la gaita y toda clase de música, se postre y adore la estatua de oro(J), 11 y el que no se postre y adore, será echado en un horno de fuego ardiente. 12 Pero hay algunos judíos a quienes usted ha puesto sobre la administración de la provincia de Babilonia, es decir, Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego(K), estos hombres, oh rey, no le hacen caso. No sirven a sus dioses ni adoran la estatua de oro que ha levantado».

13 Entonces Nabucodonosor, enojado y furioso, dio orden de traer a Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego. Estos hombres, pues, fueron conducidos ante el rey(L). 14 Habló Nabucodonosor y les dijo: «¿Es verdad Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego que no sirven a mis dioses ni adoran la estatua de oro que he levantado(M)? 15 ¿Están dispuestos ahora, para que cuando oigan el sonido del cuerno, la flauta, la lira, el arpa, el salterio, la gaita y toda clase de música, se postren y adoren la estatua que he hecho(N)? Porque si no la adoran, inmediatamente[i] serán echados en un horno de fuego ardiente(O). ¿Y qué dios será el que los libre de mis manos(P)?».

16 Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego(Q) le respondieron al rey Nabucodonosor: «No necesitamos darle una respuesta acerca de este asunto. 17 Ciertamente nuestro Dios a quien servimos puede librarnos del horno de fuego ardiente. Y de su mano, oh rey(R), nos librará(S). 18 Pero si no lo hace, ha de saber, oh rey, que no serviremos a sus dioses(T) ni adoraremos la estatua de oro que ha levantado(U)».

Librados del horno de fuego

19 Entonces Nabucodonosor se llenó de furor, y demudó su semblante contra Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego(V). Reaccionó ordenando que se calentara el horno siete veces más de lo que se acostumbraba calentar. 20 Y mandó que algunos valientes guerreros de su ejército ataran a Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego, y los echaran en el horno de fuego ardiente. 21 Entonces estos hombres fueron atados y arrojados con sus mantos[j], sus túnicas[k], sus gorros y sus otras ropas en el horno de fuego ardiente(W).

22 Como la orden[l] del rey era apremiante[m](X) y el horno había sido calentado excesivamente, la llama del fuego mató a los que habían alzado a Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego. 23 Pero estos tres hombres, Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego cayeron, atados, en medio del horno de fuego ardiente(Y).

24 Entonces el rey Nabucodonosor se espantó, y levantándose apresuradamente preguntó a sus altos oficiales: «¿No eran tres los hombres que echamos atados en medio del fuego?». «Así es, oh rey», respondieron ellos. 25 «¡Miren!», respondió el rey. «Veo a cuatro hombres sueltos que se pasean en medio del fuego sin sufrir daño alguno[n](Z), y el aspecto del cuarto es semejante al de un hijo de los dioses».

26 Entonces Nabucodonosor se acercó a la puerta del horno de fuego ardiente y dijo: «Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego, siervos del Dios Altísimo(AA), salgan y vengan acá». Entonces Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego salieron de en medio del fuego(AB). 27 Y los sátrapas, los prefectos, los gobernadores y los altos oficiales del rey se reunieron(AC) para ver a estos hombres, cómo el fuego no había tenido efecto[o] alguno sobre sus cuerpos, ni el cabello de sus cabezas se había chamuscado, ni sus mantos[p](AD) habían sufrido daño alguno[q], ni aun olor del fuego había quedado en ellos(AE).

28 Entonces Nabucodonosor dijo: «Bendito sea el Dios de Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego(AF) que ha enviado a Su ángel(AG) y ha librado a Sus siervos que, confiando en Él(AH), desobedecieron la orden[r] del rey y entregaron sus cuerpos antes de servir y adorar a ningún otro dios excepto a su Dios(AI). 29 Por tanto, proclamo un decreto de que todo pueblo, nación o lengua que diga blasfemia contra el Dios(AJ) de Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego(AK) sea descuartizado y sus casas reducidas a escombros[s](AL), ya que no hay otro dios que pueda librar de esta manera(AM)». 30 Entonces el rey hizo prosperar a Sadrac, Mesac y Abed Nego en la provincia de Babilonia(AN).

La adoración de la estatua de oro

3 El rey Nabucodonosor mandó hacer una estatua de oro, que tenía treinta metros de alto por tres de ancho, y ordenó que la pusieran en la llanura de Dura, en la provincia de Babilonia. 2 Después mandó llamar a todos los gobernadores regionales, jefes del ejército, gobernadores provinciales, consejeros, tesoreros, jueces, magistrados y demás autoridades de las provincias, para que asistieran a la dedicación de la estatua que él había mandado hacer. 3 Todas estas grandes personalidades de la nación se reunieron ante la estatua, para celebrar su dedicación. 4 El encargado de anunciar el comienzo de la ceremonia ordenó en voz alta: «Atención, hombres de todos los pueblos, naciones y lenguas: 5 En cuanto oigan ustedes tocar la trompeta, la flauta, la cítara, la lira, el salterio, la gaita y todos los instrumentos musicales, se pondrán de rodillas y adorarán a la estatua de oro que hizo construir el rey Nabucodonosor. 6 Todo aquel que no se arrodille y adore a la estatua, será arrojado inmediatamente a un horno encendido.»

7 Así pues, en cuanto la multitud allí reunida oyó el sonido de todos aquellos instrumentos de música, se puso de rodillas y adoró a la estatua de oro.

8 Unos caldeos aprovecharon esta oportunidad para acusar a los judíos ante el rey Nabucodonosor, 9 diciendo:

—¡Viva Su Majestad para siempre, y sea su nombre siempre recordado! 10 Su Majestad ha ordenado que todo el mundo se arrodille y adore a la estatua de oro tan pronto como se oiga el sonido de los instrumentos musicales, 11 y que aquel que no lo haga sea arrojado a un horno encendido. 12 Pues bien, hay unos judíos, a quienes Su Majestad puso al frente de la administración de la provincia de Babilonia, que no guardan el menor respeto por Su Majestad, ni adoran a los dioses ni a la estatua de oro que Su Majestad ha mandado levantar. Ellos son Sadrac, Mesac y Abed-negó.

13 Nabucodonosor se puso muy furioso, y mandó que llevaran ante él a Sadrac, Mesac y Abed-negó. Y cuando ya estaban en su presencia, 14 les preguntó:

—¿Es verdad que ustedes no adoran a mis dioses ni a la estatua de oro que yo he mandado hacer? 15 ¿Están ustedes dispuestos, tan pronto como oigan la música, a inclinarse ante la estatua que yo he mandado hacer, y adorarla? Porque si no la adoran, ahora mismo serán arrojados a un horno encendido; y entonces, ¿qué dios podrá salvarlos?

16 —No tenemos por qué discutir este asunto —contestaron los tres jóvenes. 17 Nuestro Dios, a quien adoramos, puede librarnos de las llamas del horno y de todo el mal que Su Majestad quiere hacernos, y nos librará. 18 Pero, aun si no lo hiciera, sepa bien Su Majestad que no adoraremos a sus dioses ni nos arrodillaremos ante la estatua de oro.

Los tres jóvenes son librados del horno de fuego

19 Al oír Nabucodonosor estas palabras, la cara se le puso roja de rabia contra los tres jóvenes. Entonces ordenó que se calentara el horno siete veces más de lo acostumbrado; 20 luego mandó que algunos de los soldados más fuertes de su ejército ataran a Sadrac, Mesac y Abed-negó, y que los arrojaran a las llamas del horno. 21 Los tres jóvenes, vestidos todavía con la misma ropa de los altos cargos que ocupaban, fueron atados y arrojados al horno ardiente. 22 Y como el rey había mandado que su orden se cumpliera al instante, y el horno estaba muy encendido, las llamas alcanzaron y mataron a los soldados que habían arrojado en él a los tres jóvenes, 23 los cuales cayeron atados dentro del horno.

24 Entonces Nabucodonosor se levantó rápidamente, y muy asombrado dijo a los consejeros de su gobierno:

—¿No arrojamos al fuego a tres hombres atados?

—Así es —le respondieron.

25 —Pues yo veo cuatro hombres desatados, que caminan en medio del fuego sin que les pase nada, y el cuarto hombre tiene el aspecto de un ángel.

26 Y diciendo esto, Nabucodonosor se acercó a la boca del horno y gritó:

—¡Sadrac, Mesac y Abed-negó, siervos del Dios altísimo, salgan y vengan aquí!

Los tres salieron de entre las llamas, 27 y todas las autoridades de la nación allí presentes se acercaron a aquellos hombres, cuyos cuerpos no habían sido tocados por el fuego, y comprobaron que ni un pelo de la cabeza se les había chamuscado ni sus vestidos se habían estropeado, y que ni siquiera olían a quemado.

28 En ese momento Nabucodonosor exclamó: «¡Alabado sea el Dios de Sadrac, Mesac y Abed-negó, que envió a su ángel para salvar a sus siervos fieles, que no cumplieron la orden del rey, prefiriendo morir antes que arrodillarse y adorar a otro dios que no fuera su Dios! 29 Ahora pues, yo ordeno que cualquier hombre que hable mal del Dios de estos jóvenes, sea descuartizado, y su casa convertida en un montón de escombros, sea cual sea su pueblo, nación o lengua, pues no hay otro dios que pueda salvar así.»

30 Luego el rey dio a estos tres jóvenes cargos más importantes en la provincia de Babilonia.

The Image of Gold and the Blazing Furnace

3 King Nebuchadnezzar made an image(A) of gold, sixty cubits high and six cubits wide,[a] and set it up on the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon. 2 He then summoned the satraps,(B) prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials(C) to come to the dedication of the image he had set up. 3 So the satraps, prefects, governors, advisers, treasurers, judges, magistrates and all the other provincial officials assembled for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up, and they stood before it.

4 Then the herald loudly proclaimed, “Nations and peoples of every language,(D) this is what you are commanded to do: 5 As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp,(E) pipe and all kinds of music, you must fall down and worship the image(F) of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.(G) 6 Whoever does not fall down and worship will immediately be thrown into a blazing furnace.”(H)

7 Therefore, as soon as they heard the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp and all kinds of music, all the nations and peoples of every language fell down and worshiped the image of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.(I)

8 At this time some astrologers[b](J) came forward and denounced the Jews. 9 They said to King Nebuchadnezzar, “May the king live forever!(K) 10 Your Majesty has issued a decree(L) that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music must fall down and worship the image of gold,(M) 11 and that whoever does not fall down and worship will be thrown into a blazing furnace. 12 But there are some Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon—Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(N)—who pay no attention(O) to you, Your Majesty. They neither serve your gods nor worship the image of gold you have set up.”(P)

13 Furious(Q) with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods(R) or worship the image(S) of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god(T) will be able to rescue(U) you from my hand?”

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(V) replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver(W) us from it, and he will deliver(X) us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.(Y)”

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven(Z) times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego(AA) and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego,(AB) 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”

They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”

25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

26 Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, “Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God,(AC) come out! Come here!”

So Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego came out of the fire, 27 and the satraps, prefects, governors and royal advisers(AD) crowded around them.(AE) They saw that the fire(AF) had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed; their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them.

28 Then Nebuchadnezzar said, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who has sent his angel(AG) and rescued(AH) his servants! They trusted(AI) in him and defied the king’s command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own God.(AJ) 29 Therefore I decree(AK) that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rubble,(AL) for no other god can save(AM) in this way.”

30 Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the province of Babylon.(AN)

The Image of Gold

3 Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was [a]sixty cubits and its width six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. 2 And King Nebuchadnezzar sent word to gather together the satraps, the administrators, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 3 So the satraps, the administrators, the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the judges, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered together for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 4 Then a herald cried [b]aloud: “To you it is commanded, (A)O peoples, nations, and languages, 5 that at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the gold image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up; 6 and whoever does not fall down and worship shall (B)be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.”

7 So at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the horn, flute, harp, and lyre, in symphony with all kinds of music, all the people, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the gold image which King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

Daniel’s Friends Disobey the King

8 Therefore at that time certain Chaldeans (C)came forward and accused the Jews. 9 They spoke and said to King Nebuchadnezzar, (D)“O king, live forever! 10 You, O king, have made a decree that everyone who hears the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the gold image; 11 and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 12 (E)There are certain Jews whom you have set over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego; these men, O king, have (F)not paid due regard to you. They do not serve your gods or worship the gold image which you have set up.”

13 Then Nebuchadnezzar, in (G)rage and fury, gave the command to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. So they brought these men before the king. 14 Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the gold image which I have set up? 15 Now if you are ready at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, and you fall down and worship the image which I have made, (H)good! But if you do not worship, you shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. (I)And who is the god who will deliver you from my hands?”

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, (J)we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If that is the case, our (K)God whom we serve is able to (L)deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king. 18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we (M)worship the gold image which you have set up.”

Saved in Fiery Trial

19 Then Nebuchadnezzar was full of fury, and the expression on his face changed toward Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. He spoke and commanded that they heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated. 20 And he commanded certain mighty men of valor who were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, and cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21 Then these men were bound in their coats, their trousers, their turbans, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 22 Therefore, because the king’s command was [c]urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. 23 And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his [d]counselors, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?”

They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.”

25 “Look!” he answered, “I see four men loose, (N)walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like (O)the[e] Son of God.”

Nebuchadnezzar Praises God

26 Then Nebuchadnezzar went near the [f]mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spoke, saying, “Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, servants of the (P)Most High God, come out, and come here.” Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego came from the midst of the fire. 27 And the satraps, administrators, governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together, and they saw these men (Q)on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them.

28 Nebuchadnezzar spoke, saying, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who sent His (R)Angel[g] and delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and they have frustrated the king’s word, and yielded their bodies, that they should not serve nor worship any god except their own God! 29 (S)Therefore I make a decree that any people, nation, or language which speaks anything amiss against the (T)God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego shall be (U)cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made an ash heap; (V)because there is no other God who can deliver like this.”

30 Then the king [h]promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego in the province of Babylon.
