Daniel interpreta el sueño de Nabucodonosor
2 En el año segundo del reinado de Nabucodonosor, éste tuvo algunos sueños que lo perturbaron, a tal grado que se le fue el sueño. 2 Entonces mandó llamar a los magos, astrólogos, adivinos y hechiceros, para que le explicaran sus sueños. Éstos acudieron a presentarse ante el rey, 3 y el rey les dijo:
«He tenido un sueño, y me encuentro muy perturbado, pues quiero saber lo que el sueño significa.»
4 Los hechiceros hablaron con el rey en lengua aramea:
«¡Que viva para siempre Su Majestad! ¡Cuente su sueño a estos sus siervos, y nosotros le daremos a conocer lo que significa.»
5 El rey les respondió:
«Ya me he olvidado de qué trataba el sueño. Pero si ustedes no me dicen lo que soñé, y qué significa, van a ser hechos pedazos, y sus casas serán convertidas en basureros. 6 Pero si me dicen lo que soñé, y lo que significa el sueño, yo les daré regalos, les concederé favores y les otorgaré muchos honores. Díganme, entonces, qué soñé y qué significa.»
7 Los magos volvieron a decir:
«Si Su Majestad les cuenta su sueño a estos siervos suyos, ellos le dirán lo que significa.»
8 Pero el rey les respondió:
«Yo sé muy bien que ustedes tratan de ganar tiempo, porque se dan cuenta de que esto ya está decidido. 9 Si ustedes no me dicen lo que soñé, la sentencia para ustedes es una sola. Ustedes me están preparando una respuesta falsa y perversa, y mientras tanto habrán ganado tiempo. Así que díganme lo que soñé, y entonces sabré que ustedes son capaces de decirme lo que significa.»
10 Los hechiceros le respondieron al rey:
«No hay nadie en toda la tierra que pueda decir a Su Majestad lo que soñó; además, nunca ningún rey, ni príncipe ni soberano ha preguntado semejante cosa a ningún mago, astrólogo o hechicero. 11 Esto que Su Majestad nos pide es algo muy difícil, y no hay nadie que se lo pueda revelar, a no ser los dioses. ¡Pero los dioses no viven entre los hombres!»
12 Esta respuesta despertó la ira del rey, quien muy enojado mandó matar a todos los sabios de Babilonia. 13 Cuando se publicó el edicto de que los sabios fueran ejecutados, buscaron a Daniel y a sus compañeros para matarlos también. 14 Pero Daniel habló con mucha prudencia y sensatez a Arioc, el capitán de la guardia del rey, que había salido para matar a los sabios de Babilonia. 15 Daniel habló con Arioc, y le dijo:
«¿Por qué este edicto de parte del rey se ha publicado tan apresuradamente?»
Y Arioc hizo saber a Daniel lo que sabía.
16 Daniel se presentó ante el rey y le pidió un poco de tiempo, después del cual le daría a conocer la interpretación del sueño. 17 Después, Daniel se fue a su casa e informó a sus compañeros Jananías, Misael y Azarías lo que pasaba, 18 a fin de que ellos le pidieran al Dios del cielo que se mostrara misericordioso en relación con este misterio, para que Daniel y sus compañeros no murieran junto con los otros sabios de Babilonia. 19 Fue así como, durante una visión nocturna, el secreto le fue revelado a Daniel, por lo cual Daniel bendijo al Dios del cielo. 20 Y dijo Daniel:
«¡Bendito seas por siempre el nombre de Dios,
porque tuyos son el poder y la sabiduría!
21 Tú cambias los tiempos y las edades,
y a unos reyes los pones y a otros los quitas.
A los sabios y entendidos les das gran sabiduría,
22 y les revelas lo profundo y lo escondido;
tú conoces lo que está en tinieblas, pues en ti habita la luz.
23 A ti, Dios de mis padres, te doy gracias y te alabo,
porque me has dado fuerza y sabiduría,
y ahora me has revelado lo que te pedimos:
¡nos has dado a conocer el asunto del rey!»
24 Después de esto, Daniel fue a hablar con Arioc, a quien el rey había ordenado matar a los sabios de Babilonia, y le dijo:
«No mates a los sabios. Más bien, llévame a la presencia del rey, y yo le haré saber la interpretación de su sueño.»
25 Enseguida Arioc llevó a Daniel ante el rey, y le dijo:
«Entre los deportados de Judá he encontrado un hombre que dirá a Su Majestad lo que su sueño significa.»
26 Entonces el rey se dirigió a Daniel, al cual llamaban Beltsasar, y le dijo:
«¿Tú puedes decirme qué fue lo que soñé, y lo que el sueño significa?»
27 Y Daniel le respondió al rey:
«El misterio que Su Majestad pide conocer, ni sabios ni astrólogos, ni magos ni adivinos podrían revelárselo. 28 Pero hay un Dios en los cielos, el cual revela los misterios, y es él quien hace saber a Su Majestad, el rey Nabucodonosor, lo que sucederá en los últimos días. Esto es lo que Su Majestad soñó, y éstas son las visiones que tuvo en su lecho: 29 Mientras Su Majestad estaba acostado, se puso a pensar en lo que sucederá, y el que revela los misterios le mostró lo que está por acontecer. 30 Este misterio me ha sido revelado, no porque en mí haya más sabiduría que en todos los seres vivientes, sino para que yo haga saber a Su Majestad lo que el sueño significa, y para que Su Majestad entienda los pensamientos que tenía.
31 »Su Majestad veía una gran imagen. Esta imagen era muy grande, y su esplendor era impresionante. Estaba de pie ante Su Majestad, y tenía un aspecto terrible. 32 La cabeza de esta imagen era de oro fino, su pecho y sus brazos eran de plata, y su vientre y muslos, de bronce; 33 sus piernas eran de hierro, y sus pies eran en parte de hierro, y en parte de barro cocido. 34 Mientras Su Majestad miraba, una enorme piedra que nadie cortó se desprendió de un monte y golpeó los pies de hierro y de barro cocido de la imagen, y los hizo pedazos. 35 Entonces se hicieron también pedazos el hierro, el barro cocido, el bronce, y la plata y el oro, hasta hacerse como el polvo del trigo que se muele en el verano, y el viento se los llevó sin dejar el menor rastro. En cambio, la piedra que golpeó a la imagen se convirtió en un gran monte que llenó toda la tierra.
36 »Éste es el sueño. Pero también haremos saber a Su Majestad la interpretación del mismo. 37 Su Majestad es rey de reyes porque el Dios del cielo le ha dado el reino, el poder, la fuerza y la majestad. 38 Dios ha puesto en manos de Su Majestad a la humanidad entera, lo mismo que a las bestias del campo y a las aves del cielo, con lo que ha dado a Su Majestad el dominio sobre todas las cosas, en todo lugar habitado. Su Majestad es la cabeza de oro. 39 Pero después de Su Majestad surgirá otro reino, inferior al de Su Majestad, y luego un tercer reino de bronce, el cual dominará sobre toda la tierra. 40 El cuarto reino será fuerte como el hierro, y como tal desmenuzará y romperá todas las cosas. 41 Los pies y los dedos que Su Majestad vio, y que eran en parte de barro cocido y en parte de hierro, serán un reino dividido, que tendrá algo de la fuerza del hierro, tal y como Su Majestad vio el hierro mezclado con el barro cocido. 42 Y como los dedos de los pies eran en parte de hierro y en parte de barro cocido, ese reino será en parte fuerte, y en parte frágil. 43 Y así como viste el hierro mezclado con barro, esos reinos se mezclarán por medio de alianzas humanas, pero no se fundirán el uno con el otro, así como el hierro no puede mezclarse con el barro. 44 Y en los días de estos reinos el Dios del cielo hará que surja un reino que jamás será destruido ni entregado a otro pueblo, sino que desmenuzará y consumirá a todos estos reinos, aunque él permanecerá para siempre, 45 tal y como Su Majestad vio que del monte se desprendió una piedra sin que nadie la cortara, la cual desmenuzó el hierro, el bronce, el barro, la plata y el oro. El gran Dios ha mostrado a Su Majestad lo que sucederá en el futuro. Este sueño es verdadero, y su interpretación es fiel.»
46 Acto seguido, el rey Nabucodonosor se postró sobre su rostro y se humilló ante Daniel, y mandó que le ofrecieran presentes e incienso. 47 Luego el rey habló con Daniel, y le dijo:
«Ciertamente el Dios de ustedes es el Dios de los dioses, y el Señor de los reyes. Es él quien revela los misterios, pues tú pudiste desentrañarlo.»
48 Y así, el rey exaltó a Daniel y le otorgó muchos honores y grandes regalos, y lo nombró gobernador de toda la provincia de Babilonia y jefe supremo de todos sus sabios. 49 Además, Daniel solicitó al rey poner a Sadrac, Mesac y Abednego sobre los negocios de la provincia de Babilonia, y su petición le fue concedida. Por su parte, Daniel se quedó en la corte del rey.

El sueño del rey Nabucodonosor
2 En el segundo año de su reinado, Nabucodonosor tuvo varios sueños que lo perturbaban y no lo dejaban dormir. 2 Mandó entonces que se reunieran los magos, hechiceros, adivinos y astrólogos[a] de su reino para que le dijeran lo que había soñado. Una vez reunidos, y ya en presencia del rey, 3 este les dijo:
—Tuve un sueño que me perturba y quiero saber lo que significa.
4 Los astrólogos respondieron en arameo:[b]
—¡Que viva el rey por siempre! Cuente el sueño a sus siervos y nosotros daremos su interpretación.
5 Pero el rey respondió a los astrólogos:
—Mi decisión ya está tomada: Si no me dicen lo que soñé ni me dan su interpretación, ordenaré que los corten en pedazos y que sus casas sean reducidas a cenizas. 6 Pero si me dicen lo que soñé y me explican su significado, yo les daré regalos, recompensas y grandes honores. Por tanto, díganme el sueño y su interpretación.
7 Una vez más ellos contestaron:
—Cuente, oh rey, su sueño a sus siervos y nosotros lo interpretaremos.
8 Pero el rey contestó:
—Estoy seguro de que ustedes están tratando de ganar tiempo, porque se dan cuenta de que estoy firmemente decidido. 9 Si no me dicen lo que soñé, ya saben lo que les espera. Ustedes se han puesto de acuerdo para salirme con cuestiones engañosas y malintencionadas, esperando que la situación cambie. Díganme lo que soñé y así sabré que son capaces de darme su interpretación.
10 Entonces los astrólogos respondieron:
—¡No hay nadie en la tierra capaz de hacer lo que el rey pide! ¡Jamás a ningún rey se le ha ocurrido pedirle tal cosa a ningún mago, hechicero o astrólogo! 11 Lo que el rey pregunta es muy difícil. Nadie puede revelarlo a no ser los dioses, pero ellos no viven entre nosotros.
12 Tanto enfureció al rey la respuesta de los astrólogos que mandó ejecutar a todos los sabios de Babilonia. 13 Se publicó entonces un edicto que decretaba la muerte de todos los sabios, de modo que se ordenó la búsqueda de Daniel y de sus compañeros para que fueran ejecutados.
14 Cuando el comandante de la guardia real, que se llamaba Arioc, salió para ejecutar a los sabios babilonios, Daniel le habló con mucho tacto y sensatez. 15 Le dijo: «¿Por qué ha emitido el rey un edicto tan violento?». Y una vez que Arioc explicó cuál era el problema, 16 Daniel fue a ver al rey y pidió tiempo para poder interpretarle su sueño.
17 Después volvió a su casa y contó a sus amigos Ananías, Misael y Azarías lo que sucedía. 18 Y les pidió que imploraran misericordia al Dios del cielo sobre este misterio, para que él y sus amigos no fueran ejecutados con el resto de los sabios de Babilonia. 19 Durante la noche, el misterio fue revelado a Daniel en visión. Entonces alabó al Dios del cielo 20 y dijo:
«¡Alabado sea por siempre el nombre de Dios!
Suyos son la sabiduría y el poder.
21 Él cambia los tiempos y las épocas,
pone y depone reyes.
A los sabios da sabiduría
y a los inteligentes, discernimiento.
22 Él revela lo profundo y lo escondido,
y sabe lo que se oculta en las sombras.
¡En él habita la luz!
23 A ti, Dios de mis antepasados,
te alabo y te doy gracias.
Me has dado sabiduría y poder;
me has dado a conocer lo que te pedimos.
¡Nos has dado a conocer el sueño del rey!».
Daniel interpreta el sueño del rey
24 Entonces Daniel fue a ver a Arioc, a quien el rey había dado la orden de ejecutar a los sabios de Babilonia y dijo:
—No mates a los sabios babilonios. Llévame ante el rey y le interpretaré el sueño que tuvo.
25 Inmediatamente Arioc condujo a Daniel a la presencia del rey y dijo:
—He hallado un hombre, entre los exiliados de Judá, que puede decir al rey lo que significa su sueño.
26 El rey preguntó a Daniel, a quien los babilonios habían puesto por nombre Beltsasar:
—¿Puedes decirme lo que vi en mi sueño y darme su interpretación?
27 A esto Daniel respondió:
—No hay ningún sabio ni hechicero, ni mago o adivino, que pueda explicar al rey el misterio sobre el cual preguntó. 28 Pero hay un Dios en el cielo que revela los misterios. Él mostró al rey Nabucodonosor lo que sucederá en los días venideros. Estos son el sueño y las visiones que pasaron por su mente mientras dormía en su cama:
29 »Cuando estaba en su cama, los pensamientos de Su Majestad se dirigieron a las cosas por venir y el que revela los misterios le mostró lo que está por suceder. 30 Por lo que a mí toca, este misterio me ha sido revelado, no porque yo sea más sabio que el resto de la humanidad, sino para que Su Majestad llegue a conocer su interpretación y entienda lo que pasaba por su mente.
31 »En su sueño, Su Majestad veía una estatua enorme, de tamaño impresionante y de aspecto asombroso. 32 La cabeza de la estatua era de oro puro, el pecho y los brazos eran de plata, el vientre y los muslos eran de bronce, 33 y las piernas eran de hierro, lo mismo que la mitad de los pies, en tanto que la otra mitad era de barro cocido. 34 De pronto, mientras usted contemplaba la estatua, una roca fue cortada, pero no por manos humanas. Esta golpeó e hizo pedazos los pies de hierro y barro de la estatua. 35 Con ellos se hicieron añicos el hierro y el barro, junto con el bronce, la plata y el oro, que se volvieron como paja en la era del verano. El viento los barrió sin dejar rastro. Pero la roca que golpeó la estatua se convirtió en una montaña enorme que llenó toda la tierra.
36 »Este fue el sueño y ahora lo interpretaremos al rey. 37 Su Majestad es rey entre los reyes; el Dios del cielo le ha dado el reino, el poder, la majestad y la gloria. 38 Además, ha puesto en sus manos a la humanidad entera, a las bestias del campo y a las aves del cielo. No importa dónde vivan, Dios lo hizo el gobernante de todos ellos. Usted es la cabeza de oro.
39 »Después surgirá otro reino inferior al suyo. Luego vendrá un tercer reino, que será de bronce y dominará sobre toda la tierra. 40 Finalmente, vendrá un cuarto reino, sólido como el hierro. Y así como el hierro todo lo rompe, destroza y pulveriza, este cuarto reino hará polvo a los otros reinos. 41 Usted veía que los pies y los dedos de la estatua eran mitad hierro y mitad barro cocido, pues será un reino dividido. Sin embargo, tendrá aún la fuerza del hierro, aunque haya visto hierro mezclado con barro. 42 Y como los dedos de los pies eran mitad hierro y mitad barro, este reino será parcialmente fuerte y parcialmente débil. 43 Y como el hierro mezclado con barro, así el pueblo será una mezcla y no permanecerá unido, como tampoco se unen el hierro y el barro.
44 »En los días de estos reyes el Dios del cielo establecerá un reino que jamás será destruido ni entregado a otro pueblo, sino que permanecerá para siempre y hará pedazos a todos estos reinos. 45 Este es el significado de la roca que fue cortada de la montaña no por manos humanas, que hizo añicos al hierro, al bronce, al barro, a la plata y al oro.
»El gran Dios ha mostrado a Su Majestad lo que tendrá lugar en el futuro. El sueño es verdadero y esta interpretación, digna de confianza».
46 Al oír esto, el rey Nabucodonosor se postró ante Daniel y lo honró; ordenó que se le presentara una ofrenda e incienso 47 y dijo:
—¡Tu Dios es el Dios de dioses y el Soberano de los reyes! ¡Tu Dios revela todos los misterios, pues fuiste capaz de revelarme este sueño misterioso!
48 Luego el rey puso a Daniel en un puesto prominente y lo colmó de regalos; lo nombró gobernador de toda la provincia de Babilonia y jefe de todos sus sabios. 49 Además, a solicitud de Daniel, el rey nombró a Sadrac, Mesac y Abednego administradores de la provincia de Babilonia. Daniel, por su parte, permaneció en la corte real.

Daniel interpreta el sueño de Nabucodonosor
2 En el segundo año del reinado de Nabucodonosor, tuvo Nabucodonosor sueños, y se perturbó su espíritu, y se le fue el sueño. 2 Hizo llamar el rey a magos, astrólogos, encantadores y caldeos, para que le explicasen sus sueños. Vinieron, pues, y se presentaron delante del rey. 3 Y el rey les dijo: He tenido un sueño, y mi espíritu se ha turbado por saber el sueño. 4 Entonces hablaron los caldeos al rey en lengua aramea: Rey, para siempre vive; di el sueño a tus siervos, y te mostraremos la interpretación. 5 Respondió el rey y dijo a los caldeos: El asunto lo olvidé; si no me mostráis el sueño y su interpretación, seréis hechos pedazos, y vuestras casas serán convertidas en muladares. 6 Y si me mostrareis el sueño y su interpretación, recibiréis de mí dones y favores y gran honra. Decidme, pues, el sueño y su interpretación. 7 Respondieron por segunda vez, y dijeron: Diga el rey el sueño a sus siervos, y le mostraremos la interpretación. 8 El rey respondió y dijo: Yo conozco ciertamente que vosotros ponéis dilaciones, porque veis que el asunto se me ha ido. 9 Si no me mostráis el sueño, una sola sentencia hay para vosotros. Ciertamente preparáis respuesta mentirosa y perversa que decir delante de mí, entre tanto que pasa el tiempo. Decidme, pues, el sueño, para que yo sepa que me podéis dar su interpretación. 10 Los caldeos respondieron delante del rey, y dijeron: No hay hombre sobre la tierra que pueda declarar el asunto del rey; además de esto, ningún rey, príncipe ni señor preguntó cosa semejante a ningún mago ni astrólogo ni caldeo. 11 Porque el asunto que el rey demanda es difícil, y no hay quien lo pueda declarar al rey, salvo los dioses cuya morada no es con la carne.
12 Por esto el rey con ira y con gran enojo mandó que matasen a todos los sabios de Babilonia. 13 Y se publicó el edicto de que los sabios fueran llevados a la muerte; y buscaron a Daniel y a sus compañeros para matarlos. 14 Entonces Daniel habló sabia y prudentemente a Arioc, capitán de la guardia del rey, que había salido para matar a los sabios de Babilonia. 15 Habló y dijo a Arioc capitán del rey: ¿Cuál es la causa de que este edicto se publique de parte del rey tan apresuradamente? Entonces Arioc hizo saber a Daniel lo que había. 16 Y Daniel entró y pidió al rey que le diese tiempo, y que él mostraría la interpretación al rey.
17 Luego se fue Daniel a su casa e hizo saber lo que había a Ananías, Misael y Azarías, sus compañeros, 18 para que pidiesen misericordias del Dios del cielo sobre este misterio, a fin de que Daniel y sus compañeros no pereciesen con los otros sabios de Babilonia. 19 Entonces el secreto fue revelado a Daniel en visión de noche, por lo cual bendijo Daniel al Dios del cielo. 20 Y Daniel habló y dijo: Sea bendito el nombre de Dios de siglos en siglos, porque suyos son el poder y la sabiduría. 21 Él muda los tiempos y las edades; quita reyes, y pone reyes; da la sabiduría a los sabios, y la ciencia a los entendidos. 22 Él revela lo profundo y lo escondido; conoce lo que está en tinieblas, y con él mora la luz. 23 A ti, oh Dios de mis padres, te doy gracias y te alabo, porque me has dado sabiduría y fuerza, y ahora me has revelado lo que te pedimos; pues nos has dado a conocer el asunto del rey.
24 Después de esto fue Daniel a Arioc, al cual el rey había puesto para matar a los sabios de Babilonia, y le dijo así: No mates a los sabios de Babilonia; llévame a la presencia del rey, y yo le mostraré la interpretación.
25 Entonces Arioc llevó prontamente a Daniel ante el rey, y le dijo así: He hallado un varón de los deportados de Judá, el cual dará al rey la interpretación. 26 Respondió el rey y dijo a Daniel, al cual llamaban Beltsasar: ¿Podrás tú hacerme conocer el sueño que vi, y su interpretación? 27 Daniel respondió delante del rey, diciendo: El misterio que el rey demanda, ni sabios, ni astrólogos, ni magos ni adivinos lo pueden revelar al rey. 28 Pero hay un Dios en los cielos, el cual revela los misterios, y él ha hecho saber al rey Nabucodonosor lo que ha de acontecer en los postreros días. He aquí tu sueño, y las visiones que has tenido en tu cama: 29 Estando tú, oh rey, en tu cama, te vinieron pensamientos por saber lo que había de ser en lo por venir; y el que revela los misterios te mostró lo que ha de ser. 30 Y a mí me ha sido revelado este misterio, no porque en mí haya más sabiduría que en todos los vivientes, sino para que se dé a conocer al rey la interpretación, y para que entiendas los pensamientos de tu corazón.
31 Tú, oh rey, veías, y he aquí una gran imagen. Esta imagen, que era muy grande, y cuya gloria era muy sublime, estaba en pie delante de ti, y su aspecto era terrible. 32 La cabeza de esta imagen era de oro fino; su pecho y sus brazos, de plata; su vientre y sus muslos, de bronce; 33 sus piernas, de hierro; sus pies, en parte de hierro y en parte de barro cocido. 34 Estabas mirando, hasta que una piedra fue cortada, no con mano, e hirió a la imagen en sus pies de hierro y de barro cocido, y los desmenuzó. 35 Entonces fueron desmenuzados también el hierro, el barro cocido, el bronce, la plata y el oro, y fueron como tamo de las eras del verano, y se los llevó el viento sin que de ellos quedara rastro alguno. Mas la piedra que hirió a la imagen fue hecha un gran monte que llenó toda la tierra.
36 Este es el sueño; también la interpretación de él diremos en presencia del rey. 37 Tú, oh rey, eres rey de reyes; porque el Dios del cielo te ha dado reino, poder, fuerza y majestad. 38 Y dondequiera que habitan hijos de hombres, bestias del campo y aves del cielo, él los ha entregado en tu mano, y te ha dado el dominio sobre todo; tú eres aquella cabeza de oro. 39 Y después de ti se levantará otro reino inferior al tuyo; y luego un tercer reino de bronce, el cual dominará sobre toda la tierra. 40 Y el cuarto reino será fuerte como hierro; y como el hierro desmenuza y rompe todas las cosas, desmenuzará y quebrantará todo. 41 Y lo que viste de los pies y los dedos, en parte de barro cocido de alfarero y en parte de hierro, será un reino dividido; mas habrá en él algo de la fuerza del hierro, así como viste hierro mezclado con barro cocido. 42 Y por ser los dedos de los pies en parte de hierro y en parte de barro cocido, el reino será en parte fuerte, y en parte frágil. 43 Así como viste el hierro mezclado con barro, se mezclarán por medio de alianzas humanas; pero no se unirán el uno con el otro, como el hierro no se mezcla con el barro. 44 Y en los días de estos reyes el Dios del cielo levantará un reino que no será jamás destruido, ni será el reino dejado a otro pueblo; desmenuzará y consumirá a todos estos reinos, pero él permanecerá para siempre, 45 de la manera que viste que del monte fue cortada una piedra, no con mano, la cual desmenuzó el hierro, el bronce, el barro, la plata y el oro. El gran Dios ha mostrado al rey lo que ha de acontecer en lo por venir; y el sueño es verdadero, y fiel su interpretación.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream
2 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams;(A) his mind was troubled(B) and he could not sleep.(C) 2 So the king summoned the magicians,(D) enchanters, sorcerers(E) and astrologers[a](F) to tell him what he had dreamed.(G) When they came in and stood before the king, 3 he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles(H) me and I want to know what it means.[b]”
4 Then the astrologers answered the king,[c](I) “May the king live forever!(J) Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”
5 The king replied to the astrologers, “This is what I have firmly decided:(K) If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces(L) and your houses turned into piles of rubble.(M) 6 But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor.(N) So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.”
7 Once more they replied, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”
8 Then the king answered, “I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: 9 If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty(O) for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me.”(P)
10 The astrologers(Q) answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer.(R) 11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods,(S) and they do not live among humans.”
12 This made the king so angry and furious(T) that he ordered the execution(U) of all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.(V)
14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.
17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.(W) 18 He urged them to plead for mercy(X) from the God of heaven(Y) concerning this mystery,(Z) so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery(AA) was revealed to Daniel in a vision.(AB) Then Daniel praised the God of heaven(AC) 20 and said:
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;(AD)
wisdom and power(AE) are his.
21 He changes times and seasons;(AF)
he deposes(AG) kings and raises up others.(AH)
He gives wisdom(AI) to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.(AJ)
22 He reveals deep and hidden things;(AK)
he knows what lies in darkness,(AL)
and light(AM) dwells with him.
23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:(AN)
You have given me wisdom(AO) and power,
you have made known to me what we asked of you,
you have made known to us the dream of the king.(AP)”
Daniel Interprets the Dream
24 Then Daniel went to Arioch,(AQ) whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him.”
25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, “I have found a man among the exiles(AR) from Judah(AS) who can tell the king what his dream means.”
26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar),(AT) “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?”
27 Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about,(AU) 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.(AV) He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come.(AW) Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind(AX) as you were lying in bed(AY) are these:(AZ)
29 “As Your Majesty was lying there, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen.(BA) 30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed(BB) to me, not because I have greater wisdom than anyone else alive, but so that Your Majesty may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.
31 “Your Majesty looked, and there before you stood a large statue—an enormous, dazzling statue,(BC) awesome(BD) in appearance. 32 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. 34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands.(BE) It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed(BF) them.(BG) 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away(BH) without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain(BI) and filled the whole earth.(BJ)
36 “This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king.(BK) 37 Your Majesty, you are the king of kings.(BL) The God of heaven has given you dominion(BM) and power and might and glory; 38 in your hands he has placed all mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds in the sky. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all.(BN) You are that head of gold.
39 “After you, another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth.(BO) 40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron—for iron breaks and smashes everything—and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others.(BP) 41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.
44 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush(BQ) all those kingdoms(BR) and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.(BS) 45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock(BT) cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands(BU)—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.
“The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future.(BV) The dream is true(BW) and its interpretation is trustworthy.”
46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate(BX) before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering(BY) and incense be presented to him. 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods(BZ) and the Lord of kings(CA) and a revealer of mysteries,(CB) for you were able to reveal this mystery.(CC)”
48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high(CD) position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men.(CE) 49 Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon,(CF) while Daniel himself remained at the royal court.(CG)

2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.
3 And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.
4 Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.
5 The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.
6 But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.
7 They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.
8 The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.
9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.
10 The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.
11 And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.
12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.
14 Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:
15 He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.
16 Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.
17 Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:
18 That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
19 Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:
21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
22 He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
23 I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.
24 Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.
25 Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.
26 The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?
27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;
28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;
29 As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.
30 But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.
31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
32 This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
33 His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
36 This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
37 Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.
41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
46 Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him.
47 The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.
48 Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.
49 Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.
